Sonic the Hedgehog has always been a series with multiple playable characters and interesting side games about them. But it's been an awfully long time since we've seen anything substantial in that department (Sonic Mania of course being the exception). I’m serious, 06 in my opinion is Shadow’s best treatment. He’s told the world will eventually turn on him yet he still decides to fight for it and protect it.

The “Sonic's stupid friends” argument is super idiotic. It's like dismissing Robin as a character because he appeared in Batman & Robin. Just because they messed the concept like 4 times it doesn't mean the idea itself doesn't work.

I blame the fanbase. Remember the nickname “Sonic’s friends era” everyone crying “Why can’t we just play as sonic!” I remember all that. Sega listened. I also remember everyone complaining about the “monster of the weak” “Why can’t we just fight eggman!?!” Screamed the fans. Am I crazy, this wasn’t THAT long ago was it? Because that’s exactly what happened. People complained so Sega gutted sonic into the hollow husk he is today.

@@lynxfresh5214 Yeah it's as if they never played any game after Sonic 1. If they had then they would have known that every game in the Classic quadrilogy introduced one or two new characters. Sonic 1 introduced Sonic and Dr. Eggman, Sonic 2 introduced Tails, Sonic CD introduced Amy and Metal Sonic and Sonic 3 & Knuckles introduced Knuckles.

The fanbase is definitely to blame for a lot of things, but when they get what they want they immediately change their mind, it's not just "Sonic's dumb friends" and "monster of the week", another stupid thing Sonic fans complained about was "it's too dark and edgy", so many people hated on Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic and the Black Knight for NO reason other than that, they didn't care about the game, they just saw guns, the Werehog, and a sword and immediately told themselves it was bad because it was too edgy. Idiots, a lot of them blame SEGA, but how can SEGA give them what they want if they don't even know what the want?
@@nathanevans1382 But we don’t “change our minds” I’ve been a fan since 2005 and never have I wanted to see less of Sonic’s friend or get rid of the epic stories. In fact I’ve never met a single person in real life that ever felt that way. Only critics online like screwattack, game grumps, ign ect. So I don’t even think there were many fans calling for this. I think I was critics Sega was listening too. I’m sure some fans were but I now think it was critics that made Sega corse correct for the worst.
I think the moment where I realised that Sonic hates his friends was when he cheated on Amy with Mario.

Hell yes, I have!
Silver and Blaze are honestly two of my favorite characters in the entire Sonic franchise. They have so much potential and yet are incredibly underused because the higherups at Sega have no clue what they're doing anymore. In my opinion I think it'd be awesome to see the return of Crisis City (maybe when it wasn't destroyed and in flames) or even Blaze's world, the Sol dimension! Just think of how cool that would be to play through.

If they make another game with blaze, i just want them to remember her sidekick marine exists.
id say throw marine in there too. it would be fun to see her personality bounce off of silvers
Tails: A platform game where he fights Eggman's robots with his own gadgets and the bosses grants him new gadgets to use.
Knuckles: Beat-em-up like the Yakuza series would be cool. He could be trying to find the Master Emerald in a city which allows for zany hijinks.
Shadow: Hack and slash. He fits for such a theme. Slaying monsters and bad guys as expected of the edgy hero hedgehog. Heck, a more polished Sonic and the Black Knight gameplay would work. The concept was good, the only problem was the execution.
Rouge: A stealth game. She's supposed to be a spy and thief. A stealth game featuring her would be cool.
Amy: Tower Defense. She spent the entirety of her arc in SA1 protecting the Flicky, so she could actually have something like a protection game where she has to make sure none of Eggman's robots could capture them.
Team Chaotix: They're detectives. Why no detective game?
Cream: Yes, even the kid rabbit has a genre for her. Remember the Chao Garden? A more complex game like that for her. She can raise Cheese and have him participate in races and such.
All these are just my two cents of ideas on what Sega could do as proper spin-off games. Granted, they're pretty basic ideas but I thought they'd be cool to happen. They have a lot of characters that could actually fit in a variety of different game genres. That said, I still enjoy Sonic's boost gameplay. Just not... Sonic Forces' version.
So Rouge could get a "sly cooper" style of sneaking around gameplay, while shadow gets either a hack 'n slash or even an Character Action game (as in Devil May Cry).
And yes please to the full on Chao Garden experience with either Cream as the protagonist or as the one teaching you how to care for the chao
I think modern Tomb Raider would be an excellent jumping off point for Rouge, because she loves jewels and treasure hunting, and Tomb Raider is the best I can think of when thinking about that sort of thing.

yeah that why we sonic fans have a lot of pet piv. i mean the quantity of things they could try are enormous. Mario as less character but there personalities were born in game that allowed it to shine through gameplay. in the meanwhile the sonic universe as so much potential that we ask the fan to fill the holes in their minds while the main companies is just not going anywhere with them for years.
I wanted Forces to star basically everyone but Sonic. Imagine, Sonic has been captured by Eggman, and Sonic’s friends must team up Heroes style to save him in custom teams, where each one has a unique whisp-like ability to change how you approach the level.

Finally, someone who doesn't hate the fucking side characters. Jesus. I remember when the newest game was Sonic 06 and a bunch of fans on forums blamed the side characters instead of blaming.. you know.. SEGA for the forcing Sonic Team to work on Secret Rings at the same time.
why would they even blame the Side Characters? Silver was the one good thing about 06. Sonic himself had the worst fucking story in the game, and Rouge was a buggy mess because Knuckles was a buggy mess. Omega was fun to control, Blaze sometimes could zoom to the void but she was fun to control.

I specifically remember seeing a video a long time ago saying something like "Nobody gives a fuck about these other characters, just give us Sonic"
I mean, SEGA could've polished Sonic, and probably Shadow, before trying to add 10 other characters, some which only get used once or twice. Obviously it's not the character's fault, it's more so they took up development time that could've gone elsewhere, because honestly, i would've loved to play Silver as a fully functional character instead of just grab thing and throw thing.
A Sonic side game, where we got to play as Sliver and Blaze trying to take down Eggman Nega. While Sliver deals with his fate of saving a future he never gets to live while considering staying in the past to live a life he wants to enjoy with Blaze and Marine.
We could even get some writing for Marine that could actually be decent. What if she encourages Silver to stay here because he's been spending his whole life in turmoil whereas she's just kinda been hanging around peacefully and how it shouldn't be that way cause he deserves to feel his happiest too. She could tell him to just stay and chill with the people he's come to know as friends. Maybe we could get an explanation on those weird powers she showed off at the tail end of the game and how that could lead into semi maturity and responsibility for her. I basically want Marine to be better than she was in SRA which isn't asking for much I think.

Sonic really has that Dragon Ball problem where they have an expansive and diverse cast of characters, yet they only really rely on the one or two main protagonists in most of their stories.

But it is not link to the power Creep that come from a story where the heroes want to be become stronger and fight harder battles because he likes fighting.
it is established in sonic universes that all have different capabilities that could work in different situation.
A Metal Sonic game that explores his humanity and how he sees himself. Make the stages bigger, explorable with upgrades and make him silent. That’s about it.

Holy shit, a really introspective and quiet Sonic game. I'd love it if it were _kind of_ like Gamma's story in SA. Most of the dialogue comes from Eggman, but it's NOT constant chatter from him, and no endless stream of jokes. It'd also be interesting if it didn't lean totally into either "you're playing as a pure evil character" OR "we're going to redeem Metal Sonic". Something a little morally gray through and through, but with enough there to still be interesting.

Metal Sonic was supposed to be actually Sonic himself from the bad future and was Roboticized, shame that got dropped for future games, which could serve as a more interesting launching point for plots involving him, although even with the he's just a robot could still work if the game was done well.

in the games? Probably Sonic Colours, which introduced Yacker. In other media we've had Tangle, Whisper, Sticks, etc. but the games really are lacking.

@@swishfish8858 most fans don't have problems with side characters, but for a time Sega was introducing a new buddy character for Sonic every game. None of them were playable, all of them filled a niche that could have been filled by an existing Sonic character, and none of them were ever shown again. Most Sonic fans don't like most of these characters and instead wanted the older side characters like Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Shadow, Rouge, and Omega to get more focus, which is why Sega pretty much stopped meaningfully trying to include other characters.
Sonic Team: If an idea fails once(even if it’s has been shown to work), never use it again.

The reason it feels more out of place is just the fact that said relationship is poorly developed and in the English version laughably acted... Overall I find it inoffensive at best.

Would love to see a mix of what they did in Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic heroes where you have multiple duos of characters that you switch between in stages. Each would take the Sonic 3/Mania approach where they mostly play similar to each other but each with 1 or 2 unique movement abilities (team actions maybe) and maybe differences in jump height and speed. Hell the tag team stages were basically this but that was forces so it was kinda eh but there is something to that idea I think.
While it was fine at first to scale back in scope with only Sonic being playable, it’s time to bring back multiple playable characters again. They were a core part of the series for a long time. Buuuuut we’d also need Sonic Team to make a good game in the first place sooo...
Edit: My character choices would probably consist of 4 duos. Sonic & Tails, Shadow & Rouge (Omega would also work), Blaze & Silver, and just for something new, Tangle & Whisper. I haven't read IDW but based on what I've seen and heard from so much of the general community, those two were designed with many of the same principles that so many of the early to mid-2000s characters were designed with. As a result, they're by far the most interesting characters that we've seen since 2006. It's time to bring them into the main games and to get some decent fresh faces in the series again.

@@jaxxxx1984 I don't even like Sonic Advance 3 but that's just due to the claustrophobic level design. The team action mechanic is a great idea that should continue and evolve (it kinda did in Sonic 4 ep 2 but it wasn't ideal).

I think a big problem with SA3 was how unbalanced and inconsistent the team abilities could be. With this, there are 4 distinct duos to work with and they'll have multiple different skills by themselves and working with one another.

Just let me play as Tails again, man. I love most ideas revolving around him, whether it's slower paced exploration and gadget gameplay or being able to use his abilities to traverse Sonic levels in different ways. Sonic probably wouldn't have paid Tails much attention if Tails couldn't keep up with him, but he can, and it's not that Tails can move as fast as Sonic, but that he can skip obstacles that Sonic has to traverse through or fight through. There's a whole world of options for Tails to take advantage of.
I very much want a Team Chaotix game again, but the chances of them ever acknowledging their existence is as small a chance as Radical Soda not making fun of Sonic Forces in a sonic video.
I think the writer of Sonic Adventure 2 really wants to write one.
Yes I would love a sort of maybe mystery style game with the Chaotix. Maybe have different areas only one member of the group can handle along with them teaming up in order to find clues. This could be coupled with the good writing these three seem to come with. They could talk to the many locals along with finding suspects and even banter with each other. I think there's a lot of potential there.
I was gonna point out that Black Knight had solid worldbuilding and characterisation, then remembered you specified main series.
Secret rings too actually. Loved the story, and the concept of Darkspine Sonic with it being very painfull to transform into already only with a 4 out of 7 rings and Sonic being angry. Similiar to Dark Sonic from Sonic X. There's need to be a Sonic game with a darker, not crappy werehog form.

@@nathanevans1382 Maybe werehog can be fun for someone, but same enemies in big amonts, very long levels with slow pace, and that cursed battle music over and over. And even if werehog is fun for someone, it's not changing the fact that there are a lot of forms that are better.
@@tarkvinii5108 Not exactly, we get plenty of different enemies over the game and the music isn't exactly bad, sure it'd be better if it worked like Kingdom Hearts, where every level had it's own regular theme and battle theme, but again, the battle theme isn't bad, it's just a little... okay, it's very repetitive, and I don't know what you mean by "slow pace", I never feel like I'm going slow in Unleashed, even when I'm playing the Werehog, maybe that's just me though. As for the "there are better forms" argument, I just disagree, all the other forms definitely LOOK better, but they definitely don't control better, even Super Sonic, when he's played in regular levels, he's just a faster Sonic who has invincibility, nothing as in depth as the Werehog, but again, all that's just me.

Man, I really would love a Sonic game that makes people say "Oh my god, these are really good characters". Just like how the comics have done in the past!
I tend to like to keep my "i wish they'd make a game like ..." wishes vague, so it doesn't _exactly_ need to be a deep, sprawling story, but if I can perk up even a few times and say "Oh, man, a character moment!" without hating the rest of it (like how Lost World _almost_ was with Eggman), I'd be happy.
I mean, GOD, there are so many interesting interactions. Think about the 500 character pairings in Sonic that have never even spoken two words to one another in a game.

Doesn't it make more sense for Blaze to have the boost than Sonic? I mean her gameplay in rush was basically boost but with fire. Boost gameplay but with Blaze instead.
As someone who was introduced to the Sonic Franchise through Rush Adventure, YES. I would love a game focused on Blaze and her struggles. She is only my favorite Sonic Characters, and honestly one of the ones to get the most development out of a lot of the Sonic Cast. And I mean specifically the alternate dimension princess version of her from the Rush Games. Maybe have it a be a kind of Spin-off game? I can see a game where you play as Blaze in her home Kingdom being over run by Eggman Nega, and having a more Sonic Adventure type of gameplay with more explorative elements where you have to traverse her kingdom to find the Sol Emeralds. Though I can also see people not liking this idea since it could possibly mean introducing her own set of side characters...hm.
A Blaze game? Sure. A Blaze game for the sole purpose of being able to play as a cat girl? Please stop.
We need more Cream the Rabbit. Enough said.
Remember when Cream existed in Sonic games, let alone was actually playable? Why she wasn't included as part of Team Rose in Team Sonic Racing will never make sense to me.

I strongly hope she continues appearing in the main series and isn't "killed off". Can't help but keep thinking that, with her absence in Forces and Team Sonic Racing, the latter especially, Cream is at real risk of being phased out of the cast altogether. But then, she's still making playable appearances in mobile games and Ian confirmed in one of his podcasts that Cream *will* appear in season 2 of IDW Sonic, so at least she'll remain with the cast. Still, would be nice if she were playable in more than just mobile games...
Way I see it, the unfortunate thing about Cream is that she's of a specific archetype that Sonic's target audience doesn't care for (a cute and innocent little girl in an action series) and also lacking in appearances with ample character development, even back when she was most prominent in the franchise (almost to the point of being played up as the "fifth main cast member" alongside Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy), resulted in the rabbit being unpopular among most Sonic fans. If individual fans aren't hating on her, then they can't bring themselves to care about Cream because she never got to be of any real interest to them
I feel this situation could easily be fixed if she were given her own story that gave her meaningful and compelling development, established a long-term goal for her that gives her character relevance (among other things), explored and deepened her relationship with Amy (as well as present their friendship in a way that **doesn't** come off as abusive or one-sided) and demonstrate more of her own character beyond 'prim and proper little girl'. But alas, SEGA are seemingly only willing to utilize the Modern characters with enough popularity, or receiving enough demand, possibly due to still reeling from the intense hatred the Modern cast wrongly received after Sonic 06, and Cream happens to be the only character ~~aside from one-shots like Elise and Chip~~ lacking in both
So Cream is stuck in a tragic limbo wherein she needs a significant appearance, or something of that nature, to become popular with most of the fandom. But SEGA won't utilize Cream to that extent unless she is popular with a good number of fans or enough fans demand for her to make an appearance. And no matter how loud we Cream fans might get, it doesn't compare to the likes of Shadow, Blaze, Team Chaotix, or even Big. So guess which characters will get major appearances, and which one gets left to gather dust?
I really hope I'm wrong about all that I just said, but I can't help but feel that to be the case. And as a passionate fan of Cream, that absolutely sucks and brings me no end of frustration. I just want to play as her in new games (not including mobile spinoffs), instead of having to replay the Advance games/Heroes, and have her be significant in a story. And I would very much like for her to be the "fifth main character" like she was supposed to be, but handled better this time. But chances are, that's never going to happen unless a high ranking Sonic official decides to make use of Cream regardless of popularity/fan support...
My TL:DR: Stuck in a popularity limbo that doesn't let her appear because of fan's apathy for her and Sega's overall weird logic and/or incompetence.

No Tails, No Knuckles, No Amy, No Blaze, No Shadow, No Cream, absolutely nobody. Also, the synopsis describes it as a journey of "self-discovery".

There's two spin-offs I'd love to see: A Silver game exploring what the hell his future actually is (think like a metroidvania where you unlock different abilities and interact with different groups in a world that's Fallout meets a cyberpunk/Judge Dress asthetic). The other would be a 2D stealth game with Rouge, using gadgets and her natural...bat-ness to steal artifacts, knock out thugs, etc. She could try to get info from Eggmam, or maybe some group of Mafia in the Sonic world, I don't really know but that sounds like it'd be a fun time

I would love to see more interactions between Tails and Knuckles. I always imagined Knuckles being kind of an overprotective big brother. Or the kind of character that cares a lot but has trouble showing it
Eh I see him as more of the calm older brother who can be there for encouragement and help but also a bit of teasing. But yeah I would love to see these 2 kinda talk with each other much more. They paint Team Sonic as three buds but we only really see their interactions with Sonic.

A game I honestly really want is an Amy and Cream game. Those two are my favorite characters and their partnership completes each other, much like how Sonic and Tails does for both characters. You got Amy, this tirelessly energetic and passionate girl who seeks out adventures (both to help people and to impress the love of her life), and Cream, a very calm and down-to-earth girl who would rather peacefully learn and explore the world but incidentally handles adventures with relative ease. You can't tell me that a side game focused on those two going on adventures, tackling their own foes, can't be interesting.
Yeah that would be cool. I think it would be a nice easy going game you can complete with relative ease but still have tons of fun. Like a Kirby game.

I will like a game where you can play as side characters like Tails, Knuckles, Amy Etc with each of their story connecting like Adventures; I really like the idea of Eggman finally capturing Sonic and it's only up to the side character to save Sonic. Even if we don't get an game like that, I will like to at least play as more characters and actually have them doing something like playing some big part in the story.
Ok, hear me out. Tails solo game where the villains of the old Tails solo games come back and join forces to take revenge on him. Just, you know, updated and reimagined like the Chaotix were for Sonic Heroes. I've seen some decent fan redesigns floating around.
I've said this before, so I'll say it here.
If Black Knight had adventure style gameplay that organically included the swords, it would be upheld as on of the best Sonic games in the Franchise. It has a phenomenal soundtrack, really great characterization, some really unique setpieces, and a really engaging story.
Call me crazy: a Team Chaotix game. I don't have any particular ideas, I just like them. Maybe regular Sonic gameplay with a stealth element for Espio.

It could be an exploration-based game with several larger worlds, where you have to find clues and solve puzzles and stuff to help solve different cases. Hell, there could even be a side-mission with Big in every world where you have to hunt down Froggy for him or something
Knuckles' Chaotix exists.
It could be a point-and-click mystery game to lean into the whole detective thing.
Espio would be in charge of fast-paced stealth missions. Charmie would be a look-out sniper. Vector would be the muscle. Switch between the three at will to achieve the necessary goal within the level.

I guess we both kind of lose in that aspect considering Tails is neither who he was in SA nor Sonic X. lol.
I would love to see a dramatic chaotix game spinoff that doesn't take it self too seriously, but still puts the characters in serious situations. Like if they got involved with the mafia but they don't understand the seriousness of the situation. It would be stupid, but that would be the point.

The side characters work so well in Mania because it's basically the same playstyle and the same levels playable. Which could be completely possible in 3d.
Big is unironically my favorite Sonic character, and it's saddening knowing he probably won't make any major game appearances ever again.
I certainly didn't like his gameplay in Adventure, but as a character, he's fun. Heroes has shown that he's more than capable of putting up a fight too, and it would be great to see him playable again some time in the future in a slower-paced, exploration based setting. Maybe as a side role, where he's affecting events playing out in the main story without realizing it.

Personally, I think Shadow's time as Sonic's Rival is long since been over. Like, the conflict between them hasn't made sense since the end of Shadow The Hedgehog, and yet they keep trying to make us believe that there's any reason for this rivalry to continue.

Shadow suffers from having no purpose to being there whatsoever since SA2. Mostly because his arc was nullified because popularity revived him from the dead and got rid of any significance his death had. Since then he has been shoved into nearly every other Sonic game where probably isnt even nesscary for the story they want to be told and honestly they have had no real idea of what to do with Shadow since his return. Which is why you see the "edgy, anime loner who hates Sonic" portrayal that we have since Shadow the Hedgehog (the game). Its them trying to emulate a purpose of Shadow to even be here despite how poignant his character would've been if they just left him in SA2.
One character I’d love to see get some more love in a future game is Amy. I can imagine a game where Sonic and Amy have to team up to save their friends and the world or whatever and learn to work together and become closer as friends and shit. Amy can get some rather interesting and at times even funny reactions out of Sonic that no other character can, and seeing these 2 being stuck together and having to work together could be interesting both story and gameplay wise, what with Amy having a big ass hammer for potential platforming and or combat. Great video as always mate, keep up the great work.

Tail's has had two games as the main character for the game gear at least, Tail's Adventure and Tail's Sky Patrol, but there's a whole lot more that could be done with hardware a quarter of a century ahead of that.

I still find it funny how Gamma is just there in the final story of his game because they wanted all playables in the same place. He doesn't actually do anything.
I think they could do a heroes style game, but you have 4 different types of stages, speed types are just about getting to the goal ring, flight types are all about puzzles, strength types put you in a room with a bunch of enemies and you have to get as many points as possible before the timer runs out, and then there’s team stages where you have to use all their skills to beat the level
What I'm waiting for is an RTS where you play as Robotnik and go on a campaign to take over the world.
Now THIS is something I would play!

That's exactly the mentality that led the series to where it is now. This whole low-bar standard of "at least it isn't 06/Rise of Lyric" that told Sonic Team that they can continue to half-ass their mascot series and nobody would complain. The Sonic fanbase needs to put their foot down and stop enabling Sonic Team to create terrible, uninspired games by not buying them until Iizuka and either Iizuka and his crew finally get their heads out of their asses and put some damn effort into their games again, or, preferably, Sonic Team is shut down and Sega hands the reigns to a competent studio that understands what the fans want from a Sonic game.

I think it took me less than four hours to finish the game, and I did some extra stuff on the way (and I also spent unreasonably long on the character creation screen 😂) - _and_ I played pretty badly on top of that. So you're not gonna get much game for your money.

Yes whilst it's true his sprite limitations of the Genesis period had him with a cheesy ear to ear grin his actions reflected how serious he took his ego. Even then he still went from one plan straight into the next going as far to create a Doomsday weapon to posses control over the Master Emerald. In Adventure and Adventure 2 this is further established as Eggman stops at nothing even outright nuclear annihilation in order to validate said ego. Saying Eggman was always a clown is a total misconception of the character. His comic relief comes from how his ego can get in the way of his intelligence. It's what makes him a foil to Sonic. One's down to earth whereas the other is manically desperate.

You can keep Tails, but all he's allowed to do is stand in the background holding a tablet. And Knuckles and Amy can show up now and then for gags and stuff, but Sonic is the only one allowed to be playable for the rest of time! Also, change up his gameplay style, since clearly that was also the problem.
