    What an increditble presentation....this guy's a professional. Just received my EGO z6 5207 this morning and after a quick review of the manual decided to look on UA-cam for someone who could explain some of the key elements and I think this video covers all the key items. Will bookmark this review Thank you Tim Johnson! 5 stars!

      I have about 2 acres. I already had their push mower. I am not sure how large your lawn is but do you think it can do 2 acres in one charge? I already have a push mower, string and blower with EGO and am quite happy with them.

    • @MyBrokenStuff
      @MyBrokenStuff 2 роки тому +8

      @@aaronpaul6369 yes. I mow about 2 acres on a hill now. This will depend on a few things though. First, if you have to run your blades at a higher speed this will eat into the batteries a bit. I’ve found that running at 50% blade speed I still have enough battery to do the whole lawn with about 15-20% remaining. You can change blade speed on the fly saving you battery though. I wouldn’t have enough charger to do the whole lawn if I had to mow an entire lawn of thick/tall grass though. But the mower charges very fast. 4 hours to full so, if you end up in a bind take a break from mowing to charge and do the edging/weed eating. By the time you’re done you’ll have enough charge to finish up the yard. The only thing I don’t like about this mower is the tires. I need much grippier tires because of my hill but if you’re on mostly flat land they will be perfect.

      @@aaronpaul6369 they basically claim to be for a 2 acre mow per charge.
      Obviously, if its the first cut and you let it get crazy before u started, then Obviously it might not make it the entire way.
      However, if you keep it in both a mild speed and cut speed then ud probably have some juice left over.
      I wonder if they make leaf attachments?

      I bought this mower this past week, it is a blast to drive for a mower. Battery life on 42" could be better, course my yard isn't flat and has a lot of obstacles. 1 acre I have about 25% battery life left.
      Travel mode for 8mph can be unlocked holding rabbit button. Likewise a 5th speed unlock for blades.
      My yard took about an 1hr & 15 mins or an hr. With gas.
      This electric is probably about 40-45mins.
      My only hope for the electric is that costs remain lower for maintenance, otherwise at 5500 with tax I'm out a lot on it... But so far it is good. Probably going to buy a couple more batteries to better balance charge & discharge next yr.

    I am hoping EGO comes out with some kind of farm ATV to replace my old workhorse Quad runner. I even thought this mower might work as it comes with a hitch in the back. Just tired of messing with spark plug, fumes, starter, noise, muffler and would like a quiet ATV for the acreage, just jump on and go. That would complete a terrific lineup of tools in my mind.

    Great review and very accurate... I've had this same mower for a little over a month, and I love it. It completely changes the "mowing experience". My only issue is I can't get the EGO app to connect to the mower via bluetooth (for firmware updates). I've tried multiple Android and iOS devices and worked with EGO Support, sent them screen shots, etc. They haven't gotten back with me after a couple weeks, but since my machine is working normally, it's not a big deal yet. I suspect the app may need an update to be able to recognize the 12 amp hour batteries, which is what the 52" comes with.
    Update: within a couple weeks, the Ego app was updated and I've been able to connect and update firmware without an issue since then.

    I think one thing to keep in perspective with the pricing of this mower is that those batteries are $600 EACH at Lowes and if you are a prosumer DIY yard worker without a huge field to mow, you've got those batteries with plenty of juice left to use with the rest of their tools to do all the rest of the yard work like edging, bush trimming, blowing, chainsaw, etc.

    Great review. Some pretty nice features on it. Love that all in one charging. Now.... I have to admit I think I had a semi heart attack when you raised that cover. 6 Ego batteries!!! On top of that they're the 12 AH which to be honest I didn't even know they had which made me have a second heart attack. I love my couple EGO devices and I love that they have stayed true about the same battery on every device unlike other companies which shall remain nameless. I just can't fully commit to EGO because of the battery cost. Besides this item most of their devices are throw away if the battery dies. Meaning you're better off just buying an entire new unit instead of just a new battery. For this device that is $3600 in batteries with only a 5 year warranty. I'm a home user and I think I'll stick with my Toro zero turn. I have had it for 12 years and [knock on wood] have never had an issue. The EGO batteries could die in 6 years and you're buying new batteries not to mention EGO could change their batteries and they're not longer purchasable in 6 years. I would love to walk out and just start my mower like I do my blower and chainsaw but not at this price. Thanks for the review.

    • @stoojinator
      @stoojinator 2 роки тому +8

      All lithium batteries have an end of life. Same with any battery. You'll never get decades out of a battery like you do with an engine. However, you won't have all 6 die. And most often with lithium batteries, it's one cell that dies, not the whole thing. They use standard 18650 cells inside the battery which you change yourself (if it's out of warranty and you have the skills). So the $500 battery could just a $20 cell die and may cost you $50 to fix if someone did it for you.
      With the price of fuels and oils now, battery alternatives are looking more and more attractive.

    • @tpmeredith
      @tpmeredith 2 роки тому +5

      Ego's entire business model has been around making the same battery and that their battery will work on all tools. Meaning every tool uses the same battery and would require them to change their entire lineup. Sure they're valid criticisms that can be made (i.e. price), but changing the battery is the least likely to happen with Ego. With proper care they could easily last 8-10+ years however and like Stoojinator said, short of a lightning strike you'll never have all 6 batteries go out at once.

      I feel you on this. I have the Ego hand mower, blower, and edger. Across all three devices I have a 7.5 ah battery and a 5 ah battery. The 5 ah battery failed late last year after just over a year of use.
      Yes, Ego did replace it after some annoying troubleshooting steps at no charge. But a 50% fail rate for something I store in my garage seems discouraging for the after-warranty life.
      I’m going to attempt to repair the failed battery. If I’m successful then I’ll feel much more confident buying these products in the future.
      Otherwise I am super happy to eliminate the gas can and oil changes.

      @@ZimZam131 It was probably a first gen 5ah battery. The 1st gen 5ah had a BMS capacitor issue that would cause whole battery to quit working. A $3200 gas mower ends up costing around $4700 every 4 years
    A $4500 electric mower costs $4650 over 4 years due to electric cost
    Every mower has its weak point.. so thats not the question.
    The questions is.. are you willing to pay for all of your gas and maintenance fee's up front and have a quiet mowing experience.. or would you like a cheaper gas lawn mower which is louder, and you pay for all of your gas and maintenance over time?
    If the electric mower lasts over 4 years... then you are putting money in the bank because electric is cheaper. Would you like to pay less than 50 cents to mow your lawn.. or $5-10 to mow your lawn each time? Just estimating but it should be around 15 cents per acre for Ego.. although you paid for your fuel up front..
    After 4 years, you start to see that savings..
    You immediately start to see savings of not having to drive to the gas station and pump fuel.. for some people that could be an hour round trip. No belt changes, no maintenance.. just get on.. press a button.. and mow... if it dies.. change the battteries if you have extra batteries.. or just plug it in.. and go spend time with your family instead of driving to the gas station

      I just don’t think a mower like this is ready for use on most peoples 3-4 acre lots. The guy came right out and said it at the end of this video: if you let the grass get too long it’s going to overwhelm this mower. Maybe in another 5-7 years the battery technology will have improved to the point where you can cut 3 acres of knee high grass. But for now I think that gas is still king here.

      @@bryanmann6756 I have 4 Ego tools. They were great for small jobs, but the battery degradation is a real thing. The 5ah battery I bought in 2020 has about half the capacity that it did when it was new. The 10ah battery that came with my mower in 2021 is also not what it used to be. I think a lot of people who’ve bought in to battery powered tools and vehicles have willfully minimized or ignored this fact. Meanwhile the gas powered zero turn I bought a year ago has the exact same run time that it did brand new. I fell for the hype but I’m over it now.

      Thats what I've been saying since they released their first model, a long time ago. They should be doing like Tesla, and putting gps units on them, with ability to track ur lawn routes. Do mini updates if you add or remove things and change the property.
      They can be collecting all kinds of important data from their machines that will help them build the next ones.
      Just very weak in terms of tech to me.
      They missed the mark entirely.
      All that data could be synced up and they can tell you, he after watching how u cut ur lawn (not like spying but notifications on how to be more efficient and effective) properly to make less passes.
      They can see where the front of ur house is and where the roads are and tell you the most appealing ways to make lines for you or people passing by.
      Stupid stuff like that homeowners today are interested in.
      Idk, idkh to do tech stuff, if i did, id be rich I know that.
      Ideas i can come up with all day.

    For someone that has never used a zero turn mower, you could mention the fact that the zero turn can leave divots on your lawn. The mover drives and turn with the rear wheels. When making a zero turn, the mower pivots on the inside rear wheel which can leave a rut. Best to make large radius turns. Now, what is Sports mode on this mower?

    I will soon be in the market for a new ride on mower as my 10 year old Husqvarna with over 700 hours on it is getting on it's last legs and repairs costs are becoming daunting. I have a little of 3 acres to mow and my Husky with a 54" deck has been a trouper. I'm curious is the EGO will do the same? I recently purchased some other EGO products, blower, string trimmer, and self propelled mower (for a smaller section of my property) and have had liked all of their performances thus far this spring. Guess i'm looking for someone to sell me on the fact that the EGO will do the job for me, especially in the long term, and especially at this price point.

I’m thinking that the battery technology needs one more generation of advancement before battery powered zero turns really take off. If they make a 60” mower with enough juice to reliably mow 5 acres or so I’d be really interested.
    But I will say that this Z6 has features that the Husqvarna MZ61 (a comparably priced gas mower) doesn’t have. Namely the seat suspension and wash down port.

It’s got self contained hydraulics, and I change the oil at the beginning of every season. I’m not sure where this fixation on gas and oil comes from but it’s not much worse than filling your car. I recently spent $300 to have it fully serviced and repaired but that’s after 5 years and sometimes 3-4 acres a week on some weeks. Oh and it was $1,800 because I bought it second hand. I’m no genius but at $1,800 or let’s say $3,000 new I don’t think you can save that money on maintenance and fuel. I think a lot of people are buying into prosumer without realizing the extra maintenance that goes with it

If gas continues to go crazy I may change my tune hahaha.

    I wonder? Will this last as long as my diesel Dixie chopper? …… I bought it back in 1998 and it is still cutting and making me money to this day 25 years later! Well will this lawn mower last that long? 25 years? If so I’d buy it but ….. I highly doubt it would ….I own the Ego electric weed eater blower and edger but I’d kill this machine and burn the battery 🔋 strait up if I did the same jobs I do today. And to boot you need 4 of those big batteries that cost basically over what I Would afford to pay. IMO looks good going in but long term I’d be sitting with a bunch of shorted batteries due to heat. The ones I use now shut down from time to time and I unplug them and reset it …..so what makes this any different? Love the light plastic weed eater and edger as well as the first light chainsaw …..not keen of the new heavy as dirt metal ones out now…… we ain’t out her to lift weights !! Who wants to be worn out more then they should ? We’re out to make money…..that first edition very light pole saw is the best ever and easy to use. I sold my heavy Echo pole saw after using the Ego …..The new ego metal/heavy one I’d leave sitting in the truck ….like I said weight is everything…..the lighter the better and the way I look at it is this….at the end of the day the job got done …..with less workout and done right. And I’m on all solar with those tools.

    Not tired enough of doing 30 minutes worth of maintenance a season to fork out $7,000 for one of those, LOL! And when just one of those batteries fails it's another $170.00 to replace? I could replace both belts, the spark plug, the oil, the oil filter, the air filter and both blades for less than the price of just one of those batteries. Had my rider for 11 years now and in that time I've changed the belts twice, the battery once and the spindles once. I resharpen my blades on the bench grinder. Easy peasy. I guess it helps that I actually like doing maintenance work when its necessary though. It's more fun than sitting here at my pc in the winter waiting for spring, lol.

      You hit the nail on the head. This product is currently aimed at people who don’t Ike to work on their equipment. Until batteries improve, or the price comes down, this definitely is not worth it. If you are handy enough to take care of a few maintenance items traditional mowers will cost much less over time. Also, I think it’s really convenient how all these EV mowers never get reviewed with overgrown thick stuff and how it will handle / drain the batteries doing so. Not all of us can have our lawns maintained perfectly to give an EV mower an easy day.

    The battery prices are the deal killer for me. 18650 cells cost about $5.00 each. That's around $60 for batteries. Then you add a $6.50 BMS card. Add $10 for a custom made case. Of course, you must make a profit, so let's more than triple the cost and call it an even $300 sales price. Compare this to the Ego price. We are getting royally ripped off for a disposable item. Those batteries add up to more than half of the total cost of the mower. Ego has reduced the price a bit this week, because last week the 10 amp battery listed for $650!

    okay first, you only have independent control of the wheels, not the blades. Also, each motor and blade comes with it's own PCBA, those are also prone to fail independently, ask me how I know, Error code 414, 413, 412, 411, 409 right out of the box. This is not a good argument for reliability, as you're working with more parts that will cause a full system failure, and Ego does not allow you to get into those PCB areas w/o voiding your warranty, so then you pay out of pocket to shuffle it off to a service center.
