  • In this real-time narrated video I paint a copy one of Lucian Freud's portraits and analyze his painting techniques, colors, brush strokes and painting methods. I do this to try to understand his methods and to bet better at painting portraits myself. Learn along with me as you watch my palate, how I mix all my colors, and apply every stroke to make the final painting.

    Dude, considering that Freud took months to complete a portrait, you’ve captured his spirit in an hour or so. Impressive!

    This is great, thank you! I love Freud, even to do a copy is a challenging undertaking and you did a fantastic job. Lots of worthwhile teachings in your narration, and your voice is nice and relaxing to listen to which helps haha. Nice work, I've subscribed.

    You have inspired me to learn more about painting by copying masters. And I find it amazing that you can paint and talk at the same time! Thanks for this interesting video. Greetings from Alsace, France

    Aleksey, you painted this really well, and 90% talking/teaching while you painted this the whole time is impressive.

      Thanks. I did the narration after I painted. Not great at multitasking.

    The main difference is that your paint is applied much thicker, and - from the looks of it - a sable/softer brush. Freud used hog hair brushes which create that distinctive scratchy effect within the sections of pigment.

    • @alekseyvaynshteyn
      @alekseyvaynshteyn  Рік тому +2

      I use bristle brushes. That said, I don’t deny that there are many differences. I don’t pretend to hold a candle to the master.

      I'm not so sure if trying to draw and paint like someone else could be called a session anymore, today computers and programs can paint like certain Artists or generate images in different styles. If the way you paint naturally looks similar to someone else - both of you have the same or similar styles.

      Check lucian’s unfinished portraits. He worked from the bridge of the nose outward, extremely slowly. To cover three inches of a portrait took days, even weeks.

  • @pritchetty
    @pritchetty Місяць тому

    Great work, but if you look at Freud's unfinished paintings and photos of his painting progression, he started painting differently.

    Freud paintings took a very long time, as far as I know, never in one go for a portrait like this, more like a couple of months, that’s why a copy is most of the times not close to an artists technique nor process but rather a mere recreation of the paintings top layer of course 👋🏼😂

    • @alekseyvaynshteyn
      @alekseyvaynshteyn  2 роки тому +4

      Absolutely. But still a worthwhile exercise IMO.

    • @javierayala967

      All copies are a recreation of the top layer!

    • @nickfanzo
      @nickfanzo 2 роки тому +1

      @@javierayala967 yes but that is why a lot of copies fall short. The history and mental engagement of time ,isn’t captured by the paint.

    • @javierayala967
      @javierayala967 2 роки тому +3

      @@nickfanzo Totally agree. But my point is that no matter how good you are, you can only copy what you see. In my opinion painting is like handwriting, it is very personal. I think Aleksey mentioned in the video "only Lucian Freud could paint like Lucian Freud". Yet as an exercise for lerning is very valid. I believe copying it is in the curriculum of some schools of Fine Arts.

  • @nickfanzo

    Lucian painted on stark white canvases and only drew a rough idea lightly with pencil; very quickly.
    He used these the most:
    Lead white- Cremnitz
    More lead white - flake white
    Naples yellow pale
    Naples yellow no.3
    Indian yellow
    Cadmium red
    Rose madder
    Ultramarine blue
    Cerulean blue
    Payne’s grey (wonderful color)
    Charcoal grey
    Burnt umber
    Raw umber - essential
    Burnt sienna
    Raw sienna
    Terre verte
    Verona green earth
    Natural bohemian green earth
    Transparent red oxide

    Wouldnt be way more interesting painting alla Freud whoever portrait, rather than painting alla Freud a painting that is already Freuds?

    I've never been the biggest fan of L. Freud for reasons such as his total failure to consider composition (and other reasons). Anyway, I can see here a superficial stylistic similarity, but I do not think it captures the full color modulations and kind of light we see in Freud's paintings. Therefore, I always wonder why such videos are made and published.

    Amateurish nonsense. It's almost a cartoon caricature. You cannot compare that abomination to Lucien Freud's work. It is ridiculous!
