  • This time I'm painting a rubber kitchen glove hanging by a clothes pin on a simple background. In this painting I'm not using any medium or solvents and just mixing paint as it comes from the tubes. You'll get to see my palate and how I mix every color and hear some commentary along with some music as I paint.

    One of the best methods I've found for laying in the value sketch is to use water soluble burnt umber and water. The water evaporates same as mineral spirits. Rest of the painting is done in regular oils.

      Interesting. I have not tried water soluble oils. Something always seemed not right to me about them. But I might give it a try. How long would you need to let the paint dry before you could go into it with regular oils?

      Actually I’m using medium 50% sennelier green for oil thinner and 50% gamblin safflower alkyd solvent free instead of gamsol. But I should try water soluble oils for beginning wash

    Well, I wouldn't have thought that a pink rubber glove could be an interesting topic. As you can see, maybe :))) Beautiful!

    Ive painted in this method. It works best with brands of oil paint that are of a more creamy consistency like rembrant-royal talens or MH, and not stiff brands like old holland. also i find if I give the paint a good mix with a palette knife whilst still on the on the palette, it aids the paint to soften and flow a bit better. Also painting outside in the sunshine in summer somewhat softens the paint to a lovely consistency to work this method. enjoy everyone!

    Glad you were able to give it a go with little to no medium. What paints do you like? I find that m Graham works well with no medium. It’s a very soft paint with no fillers. Their entire brand is solvent free.

      I have several brands I amassed over the years. Mostly Utrecht, Windsor and Newton, Grambacher, and Gamblin. You can always mix in a little linseed oil of the paint is too stiff.

    Hello thanks for your video! It's stunning! Is painting without medium almost feels the same like painting in acrylic? Or is the texture still the same? Will this painting also last for ages without mediums?
    I really wanted to start painting in oil but our studio is tiny and we have bad ventilation so I'm trying to see if I could paint in oil w/o medium or just stick to acrylic and watercolour 🥺
    Thank you so much!

      Thank you. Painting without medium in oil is not like acrylic. The paint does not dry right away and does not darken as it dries. You can still work into previous layers, but because the paint is stiffer, it’s easier to go over. You can either paint without medium or use a little bit of linseed oil as a medium to thin the paint. It does not produce fumes.

      That’s great. The method of painting I teach is solvent and medium free. What paints do you use? I find m Graham is very easy to use without mediums. Michael Harding too.

      It’s a great method to learn from the start. Much harder to go to this method if you are used to mediums.

    Thank you for this interesting demo oil painting without medium or solvent. I'm inspired to try this method. Do you varnish your paintings?

    • @alekseyvaynshteyn
      @alekseyvaynshteyn  Рік тому

      It depends. If the surface has an uneven shine when dry I apply varnish. With this method the painting dries very mat, which I like a lot and leave as is.
