Yessss!! I definately would like to hear more on each of the videos especially since he's responsible for some of the most iconic videos ever! At least 5-10 mins per video please!
I think they just watched the video which inspired Joseph then his own videos 🤷♀️ else there would be a Beyonce, Daft punk & some other artist's videos
Madonna had a talent for getting the best in the business to help her shine. I loved music videos back in the day and the video's he made with Taylor and Brittany look amazing.
Joseph Kahn is so awesome. He truly appreciates the early music video scene. It's so cringy watching someone call iconic music videos cheesy. How does one host a show about filmmaking and not appreciate early filmmaking? *head explodes* More Joseph Kahn please.
Actually the original Ghost in the Shell film did ;) But it was also used in the opening scene of the Matrix, and the wachowskis were ofc heavily influenced by cyberpunk anime.
This video is such a masterclass in music video creation. As an artist who understands filmmaking and conceptualizes his own music videos I’m extremely grateful for the lessons in here. Thank you!
back in the 80s the skating rink I went to frequently they used to always show that THRILLER video on their big screen, it was like watching a movie every time. Loved watching it
Toxic holds a special place in my mind. It came out when my life wasn't going too well. Just hearing that iconic violin sting still makes me smell the smells, feel all those feelings. But for some damned reason, it is a sort of happy nostalgia. Toxic, Nostalgia Locomotive and a few other songs from around that time brings bad memories, but happy thoughts. I don't know, maybe it's because I made it through in one piece and my life turned out a lot better? It was the lowest my life ever got and I know I will never be that low again. Life can throw whatever it wants at me and I know that I can take it. Maybe that violin sting reminds me of that, rather than the feelings I had at that moment?
That intro speech was too true. For example, one genuine thing that I like about Indy mogul UA-cam channel is how host seems to have fun while doing their videos. « If you seem to have fun in a video, I will want to have fun with you ». It put a finger on one thing I couldn’t exprès before.
This is amazing! A bit unfortunate that the interviewer talked over Joseph and wasn't really listening and allowing him to speak, but perhaps he was nervous
This was great... But he kept saying he met Britney on Stronger, and he had worked with her on that video before Toxic... But Toxic came out 5 years earlier? Did he get them mixed up?
You should get lumpens. Maker of BTS music videos. Less green screen and more practical effects. A music video with symbolism and story line. Please react to BTS video like (blood sweat and dreams, fake love , spring day, boy with luv, and the new video shadow interlude)
As a music video director myself this was super informative and validating. I'm often pressured to create a distinct "style" as a director, like people expect me to do all the same thing and all my videos to look the same because a lot of other MV directors are like that. But for me, I also just like to follow the aesthetic of the artist. If the artist wants cinematic, I'll do that, but if the artist wants a lofi look then that's fine too. I like learning how the artist thinks, I try to imagine it as "how would the artist make a video if THEY were a director and not a musician?" that's the most interesting challenge for me.
As I recall, the only *Joseph Kahn* music video I really liked was *_"Hero"_* for *Enrique Iglesias* with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Mickey Rourke in a takeoff on Tony Scott's 1990 Kevin Costner/Madeline Stowe/Anthony Quinn starring thriller _"Revenge"_ with additional shades of Roger Donaldson's _"The Getaway"_ from 1994 and 1993's _"Indecent Proposal"_ directed by Adrian Lyne. Some visually sumptuous pastiche.
Didn't expected much (since it didn't seem like one of your cool and fancy technical breakdowns), but turned out - once again - as a life-changing lecture. Thank you so much Indy Mogul!!
This is the most amazing Christmas gift! I love Joseph and his work! His videos were iconic when I was in high school, and I’ve gotten to work with him once. I cannot wait to unwrap htis present!!
5:34 - the singer's medium 14:1315:01 - Joseph's process (sometimes leaving room for improvisation and exploration on set) (cites mapping it all out is fun which is interesting) 16:16 - advice
Starts the video at 14:46 cause I'm a swiftie but started back from the beginning cause Joseph Khan is pretty good at what he does. Very informative and low key hopes Joseph directs the MV for The Man and Cruel Summer. Let's just get that energy out there right now. ;)
Or Remember The Time! Sometimes I think Remember The Time is better and sometimes I think Thriller The Greatest Music Video by an artist that happens to be a woman is Rhythm Nation by Janet Jackson. No debate
They chose thriller maybe becoz it broke barriers and it started the trend of how music videos should look like. But I agree with Smooth Criminal. It was just epic
That 3 point stance that you guys were referring to that Britney uses in the music videos was something that was used in the 80's in Hong Kong Action Films.
I have quickly grown to love u bro who runs this channel!!! Idk know your name but most of ur videos are right up my alley and very inspiring and helpful
👋Here are my major takeaways from Joseph Kahn! • A good music video needs good filmmaking. MVs need to connect with emotion and humanity. Technique is just a delivery system. • Instead of doing hardcore references, Joseph will just a feel of it and then regurgitate in his own way. • Get into the heads of your artist to understand what their art means to their audience. • Instead of listening to the song with pre-written lyrics written down, write down the lyrics by hand for more immersion. And the most important one... The music video is a singer's medium. The spotlight here is for the artist. You need to capture the essence of the artist. (Ex. Michael Jackson stole the show in Thriller, Christopher Walken in “Weapon of Choice”, Eminem in “The Real Slim Shady”)
10:38 although 2008's _Iron Man_ was produced by Marvel Studios, it wasn't the "first Marvel movie". The first live-action movie made about characters from Marvel Comics was 1944's _Captain America_ The first successful Marvel movie was _Blade_ in 1986.
Kahn: Let’s have dragons, rain and soldiers for your “Stronger” video.
Britney: *I wanna dance in a chair.* (what a queen)
She got it right tho. Dragons with the technology of the early 2000's would have looked cringy af
😂😂😂
And it worked
So perfect

It happened before with "baby one more time". Directors want high concept. Britney wants it simple.
"I can't believe Tony Stark came from Britney Spears."
I think I've read that fanfic.
😳
Michael Jackson was the first artist to transition from the abstract music videos into legit short films. Genius.
Toxic will always be one of the best videos of all time. The Britney segment was so good.
Joe is like the crazy older brother you never knew you needed in your life. So much fun time recording this one. I learned a lot.
Ted Sim It would be cool if you’d watch my newest short film on my page and tell me what you think
He seems super chill, and I’m dumbfounded at his intelligence.
Would love to see a less edited version, going into more detail on each video
Yessss!! I definately would like to hear more on each of the videos especially since he's responsible for some of the most iconic videos ever! At least 5-10 mins per video please!
Honestly, Britney was right about the chair idea. Still looks good to this day.
"Stronger" is my favorite video. With "Toxic" he made a monument to himself
how did they not look at "Take on Me"??? :'(
I think they just watched the video which inspired Joseph then his own videos 🤷♀️ else there would be a Beyonce, Daft punk & some other artist's videos
Madonna had a talent for getting the best in the business to help her shine. I loved music videos back in the day and the video's he made with Taylor and Brittany look amazing.
"I was thinking of dancing in a chair."
"That'scooltoo."
Backstreet boys did that...
Isomer Mashups lol

He should host this instead of the other guy.
Wow, a great new guest as always! But when inviting such people (not so many UA-camrs can do it) I think a video could be longer, like 30 min.
this was definitely an early christmas gift
The host is ridiculously adorable. He laughs so much, and his whole face lights up. Major hottie!!
He directed Toxic!!! This guy is genius
Britney Spears invented the superhero landing
Actually the original Ghost in the Shell film did ;) But it was also used in the opening scene of the Matrix, and the wachowskis were ofc heavily influenced by cyberpunk anime.
The comment about Britney ... YES WE LOVE TO SEE IT
This video is such a masterclass in music video creation. As an artist who understands filmmaking and conceptualizes his own music videos I’m extremely grateful for the lessons in here. Thank you!

I loved this! Wish the video was longer so they could've gone into Blank Space as well
absolutely cannot believe how brilliant and wise this fool is
so good
Rewatching this like a week later and I just get chills from some of Kahn's quotes. What a genius.

Britney is a living legend! I Loved that segment 👌🏼

The presenter not getting Madonna's "Express Yourself" is just sad
Wow Joseph Kahn is the most intellect and creative director ever... I could listen to his lecture whole day... n God bless him
Some amazing insight and experience in this one. Joseph is honest and hilarious. We learned so much just from sitting with him. What'd you take away?
This is amazing! A bit unfortunate that the interviewer talked over Joseph and wasn't really listening and allowing him to speak, but perhaps he was nervous
This was great... But he kept saying he met Britney on Stronger, and he had worked with her on that video before Toxic... But Toxic came out 5 years earlier? Did he get them mixed up?
@@lbowesphoto Stronger was released in 2000 and Toxic in 2003! lol I know too much
@@Chief Ahhhh, that makes sense. The time stamps on the video say Stronger was released in 2009

Hands down my favorite music video director of all time. Definitely my top 3 favorite person to ever touch a edit bay or a camera.

What about Iron Man? What are your feelings on that?
Michael Jackson was so ahead of his time
Totally agree with the Analysis for Thriller. Certainly another light to Black people back then and it wasn’t “Ghetto”.
Didn't expected much (since it didn't seem like one of your cool and fancy technical breakdowns), but turned out - once again - as a life-changing lecture. Thank you so much Indy Mogul!!
I’m the type of person to say “that’s a great drum snare” while listening to music 1:31
OMG its so cool you were able to get him to do this!

The comparison between film making and the force is incredibly interesting to me as a film maker and a lover of star wars! Spot on!
4:18 Shoutouts to the guest showing that great directing can go further than just technique.
Express Yourself was absolutely the video I was hoping would be mentioned. Fincher & Madonna worked so well together.
Joseph is such a legend and brought a lot to the music video industry. Great video as always 🙏🏼🤩

this video reminded me why i love filmmaking, also a reminder that i need to go out there and live life... also joseph is king
Lot of people consider MJ's _"Thriller"_ MV as the Greatest Music Video Ever but for me that title belongs to MJ's _"Smooth Criminal"_ MV 👌
How do you pick one? if i had to i would go with Black or White.

So grateful to you guys for content like this!!!

This is by far my favorite in this series. As a Gen X child I remember watching all those videos. Before MTV was the best time for music videos.
Express Yourself is SUCH a good video!
You edited all the good shit out. Man is a genius - let him roll
Toxic MV looks like it was released yesterday. And no matter what year it is, it's still gon be lookin real fresh. That's how amazing it is.
I would love to see videos by Katy Perry, lady Gaga, and all of the 2000-2010s most successful videos
My favourite music video is Fineas’ I Lost A Friend, it’s truly beautiful
Very thankful for this video 🤗
Yupp life experiences do shape your perspective on life. Great source of creativity.
definitely studying this later, great video!
I appreciate the countdown clock during the ad

Oh Father by Madonna is one of my favorites.
Yes, it was so beautifully done.

Brilliant insight this guy has.
Love this y’all
iron man firing his repulser but instead of the usual charge-up whining sound, it's the riff from toxic
The podcast episode with Joseph Kahn is EPIC!!! :)
Fantastic video! Such great knowledge!
This is very insightful! I love getting expert perspectives from people who have accomplished so much
i would have been really interested in hearing something about peter gabriel‘s sledgehammer aka the greatest music video of all time
PLEASE MAKE MORE VIDEOS WITH JOSEPH!
As a music video director, I can say that most of the “effects” they used in the 80’s are back in style today lol.
I'm surprised they didn't cover any Wayne Isham or Nigel Dick videos. I feel they are some of the most influential music video directors.
We'll keep that in mind for the next music video episode!
Awesome. Love your content. Always dialed in
Am truly missing this show
i listen to music and want to know exactly how they made that snare
modestrocker1 like in In The Air Tonight
