When traveling from the east don’t forget about #DevilsTower. It’s in the northeast corner of Wyoming, only 40 minutes off I-80 (which you’re probably on anyway) and magical. Well worth it! 👍✌️
Thank you so much for your videos about Yellowstone. I am a month away from my start date and have used your advice on what to pack. I'm so excited to start this adventure!
I worked in Canyon Village back in 2004 and 2011. I am dying to go back someday. Have you thought of doing a virtual tour of Canyon Village dorms and employee facilities? I'd love to see if they improved the facilities. I was in Wapiti in 2004 and in Grizzly in 2011. Please consider, thanks.
You are such a great source for all things Yellowstone related! You’ve convinced to step out and try it so I’m headed out for end of the season work Aug 27-Oct 15. I’m curious if there are any nail salons close for manicures?
Great videos! I have a question, can I just fill out the xanterra application once, say that I'm open for other positions, or do I need to apply for each position individually? Thanks!
Hi! I’m a senior in high school and just trying to figure out what I want to do after school. I know your advice is all for national parks but what about just working at a state park? I know it’s smaller but do you have any experience. Do you go to college while you are working or in off season or something? And I was thinking about like a park and rec. major? So does that seem right to be doing with wanting a job like this? I’d love if you could get back to me, I’ve started watching you channel and I’m super interested in all this cool stuff and exploring!
I brought mine and I had no issues feeling like it was unsafe at any point. I kept it under my bed and my roommate and I always locked the door to our room when we left!
Are the younger people there relatively "cool"? (As in easy to get along with) I'm 22 and I just wanna know what people are like. Ill be in mammoth hot springs. Is there a pub there?
Yes! There will be both younger people and a pub. The Mammoth pub is actually pretty cool and huge! When I worked there, I had a friend group that was all in their early-mid 20s.
Could you live off of seasonal work? I'm a junior in high school so right now everything is about finding out what you want your career to be but I don't want a big thing and I've been looking at so many careers and none of them truly stuck. This looks like something I'd like doing but what if it was the only thing I did? Would I be able to?
I think you totally could! I know people that do seasonal work year round. During the "off season" they usually travel or visit their families. It's certainly sustainable if you do it right.
Hey Carolyn! I have a few questions for you! I'll be a server's assistant in Canyon Village, and I was wondering what you knew about that position. I'm curious about what the uniforms look like?? (I know I'm being such a girl, but I need to know lol) Can you get away with not having slip resistant shoes?? (I've worked in some places where I could, and where I couldn't) Hours?? What kind of restaurant it is?? I'm also wondering about dorms. Is there a closet space and if so, how big? I'm currently making a packing lists, so this would be helpful to know. I'm having a friend fly in my last week so we can road trip home together. I've heard that you can ask your roommate and RA if its okay that you will have a person stay with you, and said person can if it is approved. Did you ever see this happen? I'm kind of winging it, but I'm looking to have some direction lol Anyways, your channel have been super helpful so far!! Thanks in advance for answering my questions. :)
ALSO I heard that whoever makes the schedule will try to schedule you a morning shift, your two days off, and then an evening shift. Making it so you can enjoy your two days off as much as possible. Did this happen or did you hear about it happening?
Hey! So The uniforms, if I remember correctly, are pretty much all black for SA's! You probably could get away with not having slip resistant shoes, but it's a really big kitchen you'll be popping in and out of, so I would be cautious if you decide not to bring any! As for closet space, the dorms do have designated spaces for you to hang your things, as well as a dresser in each room. I also did know people that had others come and stay with them in their dorms. It's pretty common! Glad my channel could help out! (:
Thank you for all the informations! So I’m going to Yellowstone (Old Faithful) in 2 months and I won’t have a car. Do you think that I will have hard time moving in the park? How someone without a car survives over there? Thank you
You should be fine getting from place to place! It's legal to hitch hike in Yellowstone and the tourists there are usually more than willing to pick you up. You can also catch a ride places with people that did bring their cars. (:
Not having a car will definitely make it a bit harder to get around in the park because you will have to rely on other people to get you around, whether that be by hitch-hiking or catching a ride with your friends. If you want to go to a town outside of the park it might be kind of tricky to do so without your own car. You will also have to consider what your schedule looks like, and if your car-buddies schedule lines up with yours. But dont worry! There are always group activities being planned and posted up somewhere in your dorm area which provide some kind of transportation and are a good opportunity to meet some awesome people from all over the world. Pro tip: if you plan on leaving the park in a car, make sure the owner has the empolyee sticker pass thingy, otherwise they might not let you back into the park right away if you try using your Xanterra ID card, and you dont want to be late to a shift while stuck at the gate for three hours (long story trust me on this one).
Hi there! I have no idea. During my time in the park I never actually made it to the Canyon Lodge! If you have questions like that, it may be good to try and contact Xanterra. They most likely have a contact number or e-mail on their website. Or, you could call the Mammoth Hot Springs hotel. I believe they are open and may be able to answer your questions.
It took about two weeks for me to hear back from them. They didn't do interviews when I applied, so if any of y'all reading this comment know, chime in!
Do you think that xanterra is selective? I just recently applied for the food and beverage category and Im wondering how likely it is that I will get the job. I have restaurant experience on my application but I am worried I wont get it?
I don't believe so! They didn't when I got there. They do randomly drug test on occasion throughout the season, but it's usually only a handful of people and generally it's the ones that are blatantly doing drugs.
@@CasuallyCarolyn It is true that they do random drug tests 1-3 times during a season. But it's not true that specific people are targeted. The list is randomly generated and given to the security team to carry out. Everyone from laundry up to management can end up being asked for a swab. The only time you would be asked to do a "drug test" specifically would be a breathalyzer. Only in the scenario that you were under 21 and alcohol was found in your room, or you were suspected to be under the influence while on the clock. (I've seen both happen)
@@joshuacalgc Thanks for the insight! The only people I knew that got drug tested were those that were known outright to be doing drugs, so I suppose you don't hear about it through the grapevine when someone tests negative and doesn't get fired. Thank you for the extra info! (:
@@CasuallyCarolyn No problem at all! I worked security so I dealt with that issue A LOT. Some of the younger employees don't realize how serious being on federal land is when it comes to underage drinking and drugs. You will go in front of a judge and the consequences can be severe, sometimes as bad as a ban from reentering the park for a set period of time. It wouldn't be a bad topic for a new video! Unless you've already covered that subject.
It doesn't get too hot in the park! I can't remember if there's air con in the rooms, but opening a window is always the best option to keep cool during the summer!
When you fly into Yellowstone you will pay 350.00 dollars for one night to get up and get on a bus to get into the park. She is telling you like it's Disneyland, it's not. Remember you will wind up working 6 days a week and will do 3 jobs. There is no shuttle to go hiking so if you don't have a car forget about hiking unless you beg someone to go hiking. The hiking trails..you need a car to get too. She said about the same schedule with friends, NO WAY! They will put you where and when they need you....
I disagree with you! I worked in 10 national parks. She is wrong, it's understaffed and overworked 100 % You Will work 6 days a week and your one day off your body will sleep and you will do laundry all day. She is not telling everything.
Hi Ray! During my season, Xanterra stood steady in their promise to only work their employees 5 days a week and provide them with two days off a week that were coupled together. It may be different in other parks and locations, but this is simply my experience (:

It snowed here on June 20, 21, and 22 this year! I am in West Yellowstone.
2018 we still had snow in Old Faithful
They have an application that you can fill out on line. You don't need a resume for low paying seasonal positions.
Wow, i really wanna do this and work in the environment! I feel like its an amazing beautiful experience. Good video too, thank you!! Very informative
I leave for my seasonal job in less than 2 weeks I’m so excited

@@CasuallyCarolyn awesome, thank you so much! Have a great day!
Get into supervisor or management lot's of them do seasonal in one place every year and many go to different parks around the country
What do you think is the age range of people who do seasonal work? I'm 36 and I'm wondering if I would be considered "old" LMAO
You should fit right in! There's a super wide range of people working there, I even met people in their 60s!
Mostly young or old 36 is probably the smallest age group
Would it be possible to get a room for yourself? Do you think one could pay a little extra to get a room for themselves?
No only management gets single rooms
How much money do they take from your pay to cover housing?

Hector Silva I emailed the lady that interviewed me! I’m sure you could email anyone to do with HR and they’ll let you know.
Are there any hot tubs or indoor pools that employees can use ?
Is there a smoking area outside for employees ?

Take any free tours you can
Did you sleep in your car on the trip up there or did you stay in hotels
This is a tourist question. Do you know if Canyon lodge rooms have heating? Is there separate parking fee for parking in the park? Thank you!
