I've been looking for videos like this since I'll be starting at the Grand Canyon next May and I'm so glad I found your channel! I'm definitely going to be making my own videos to help bring knowledge to the world! Thank you so much!
This was great, thanks so much! I'll be working at Grant Village in Yellowstone this summer. This will be my first outdoorsy adventure, definitely stepping out of my comfort zone so I had no idea what to bring. Super excited nonetheless! Thanks again, your videos have been so helpful!
Shakeira Woods Im headed out in may first timer! Ill be in grant village also, there is a good forum on fb called working in yellowstone 2018 alot of people on there and info
I start working in Yellowstone next month and I'm beyond excited. Thank you for these videos, they're super insightful and make me super excited to travel across the country and explore :)
When I left Alabama to work in Yellowstone in late May/June '89 the temps were 90/70. I was thinking that the temps at Canyon might be 70/50 ... haha! There was still snow on the ground and it snowed several times in the first week. Fortunately, my mom had slipped in some warm clothes into my bags. 30 plus years later, I still think "thanks mom!" 😃 Bring warm clothes! "11 months of winter and July" It snowed at Canyon Lodge in June and at the end of August in '89 and '90. We hitchhiked most places with our "Park Employee" sign, rode the park bus, or begged rides from fellow park employees with vehicles. My wife and I met each other in Yellowstone. It was a great 2 summers.
Only thing I would change, is the backpack. I would say a day hike pack would be better! They are a little more expansive, but they work a lot better. You can put a camelback in it, and they have straps to wrap around your waist to sit comfortably so it doesn’t sack down on your back and hurt it. But I’m excited to join Xanterra and be at the Lake Hotel! In may!
I have a interview coming up for Banquet manager. I need all you insightful awesomeness. Example. I live in Cheyenne. There's only a bus when I get to Montana? You've named a few towns.. to shop at. Do they direct deposit? I can not breathe without chap stick sunglasses hat hoodie. I luckily have a red Yellowstone hoodie already. How about bug spray. I saw you mentioned beR spray. Sheet's? What size.. greatful for you sharing.
If you fly into Bozeman, yes! There is a bus Xanterra will pick you up in. They do direct deposit! That's what I did when I was there. All you need, I believe, is a bank check or your routing number and account number. I don't remember ever using bug spray in the park! I don't think there really is a big bug problem there!
@@CasuallyCarolyn 😲😱No bug's? Fur sure. I am going to need your address for the Yellowstone thank you gifts for your help and guidance. If I get the job. I have a video request. You mentioned your mom went with you? What did she do for the four months of work? Clarification what did she do while you were at work?
Hey! I’m starting Yellowstone in April this year and I was wondering if we could have a chat about your experience and all that! This video was very helpful and much appreciated!
Hey Carolyn! Ive been offered a position in Canyon starting in June and I'm absolutely terrified(exciting, but still terrified) of being on my own for that long as I'd be just turning 18 and out of high school. Was it scary for you, and if it was, how did you not psych yourself out of it? Also, how did you like your actual job? My position definitely isn't very glamorous but it'll pay well, and id be saving a lot more than I thought I would be from research.
I was in this exact position when I went to work at YNP! I had just graduated and packed up and drove across the country. The others that are working in the park will have your back, so there is no need to worry about being alone and on your own. It is a little unnerving at the beginning, since you won't know anyone. However, it is SO incredibly easy to make friends. I'm really excited for you that you're working in Canyon! It's the best (I'm biased). What is your job?
I'm glad to hear that the employees will be helpful, whew! I'll be doing housekeeping for employee dorms and other areas around it. I finalized all of my paperwork today after reading your response so Ill be starting June 7th!
Hi! It all depends on where you work. You get to choose your "weekends" (the two days you have off in a row), but I'm not sure if everywhere will let you choose what time of day you work.
Would bringing a 32’ inch flat screen TV be weird for seasonal work? Does anyone do that?? I got a job and don’t know if I should sell mine or bring it with.
I'm curious...what was your experience in the age range of people working for Xanterra at Yellowstone? I am 47 years old and have applied for this Winter.
I have seen people of all ages work there! Some even into their 60s. Half of the people working there were in the 18-25 range, the other half were older. I was in Yellowstone yesterday & noticed a few people that were "older" people working there!
Serious question, can you bring a gun? I would rather take a gun with me than just bear spray by itself. I understand that it's legal to carry a firearm in YNP, but does the company you would work for have any rules against it?
Hi! I'm not sure about the rules Xanterra specifically has. I do know that you can bring a firearm into the park, it's just illegal to use it. I would shoot Xanterra an e-mail and ask!
Xanterra specifically has a policy of no firearms for employees, anywhere in the park. But…….I was feeling the same way about “just bear spray” and I will neither confirm nor deny that I may have had a pistol with me anyways, and I’ll leave it at that. If you do decide to bring it, make sure you have a way to lock it up, and obviously a concealed carry holster since you technically can’t have it with you….
@@jwlxbfkgfjwcjx haha most likely you would have bear spray, and that would keep you safe! Plus, with most bears in the park you aren't supposed to flee or they'll come after you. Bears really aren't a huge problem at all. I saw only a few during my time in Yellowstone and it was during hikes!
I start my job at Yellowstone next month! I'm so excited, thanks for the list.
So excited for you! Do you know where you'll be working?
Casually Carolyn I believe I'll be working in canyon village.
Woo! Canyon Village is the best, you'll enjoy it!
I'm hoping to get hired at old Faithful inn

So should I bring blankets also?!

Can i ask though, is there like a company shuttle or bus service that pick and drop offs to the job location or how do you back& forth to work?

hey ...thanks for this video, so cool... especially for a newbie!!!!! I'll be at Canyon Lodge

SAS slip resistant shoes are the most comfortable ever. If you work on your feet a lot they are worth the investment.
I want to work at Yellowstone, how was the application process and did you need a specific background to get this job?
