I love using my things! All the thing I used to keep in a box, keeping them safe and at the same time worthless, now bring me daily joy. I have joy EVERYDAY! I though joy was only for special occasions. I would say that joy is for everyday but I’d rather say everyday is a special occasion.

The things that just casual slip out of T.K.'s mouth would take most time to premeditate in their thoughts. He is so well spoken on the fly. Love that.

"As soon as you bought that thing, you hurt the environment." 😳😳😳. But actually, yeah, you did. There were all kinds of carbon emissions that went into making, packaging, and shipping that thing. We don't always think about the production impact until we're ready to throw something away. Good call, Ryan. Preach!

We are all creators. We try to consume so much to try to be happy and we've forgotten. Minimalism is stripping away the excess so we have a blank canvas from which to create. Thank you for the reminder. Are your things getting in the way of your creativity? What's the thing I can't not do? I really love TK, he's my favorite guest. You never want to look at your neighbor unless you want to see if they have enough. TK: creativity will fill the void. Slow down, listen to the wisdom from within, and create from the non - reactionary space.

For Kim in Scranton; if you can recycle, donate, or throw away 50% of your items, could you then live in a 50% smaller space? There’s a fallacy that something being in an air conditioned building for 30 yrs is better than it sitting in a land fill for those same years. I’d argue that adding it to the landfill NOW is the best thing for the environment. Also, you can pull everything like that together and give it away as a “free grab bag”. Sometimes people have odd hobbies that they want random items for. I ordered the wrong size drawstring clasps, but someone on Craigslist wanted them as the exact thing they needed for their survival bracelet project. Keeping it around your space isn’t helping you or anyone else.

Decluttering, I found clothes from my grandma. Beautiful fabric but old designs. I thought about donating it to a theather. And so I found out that on was burnt less than a month ago. I gave the stuff to them. They were very grateful and I was glad I found a nice destiny to those things.

This is for those who think they have garbage that others cannot or will not use. I had a 15-year-old well-used mattress that was supposed to be thrown away when I upgraded to a new bed and mattress from ikea. I didn't have the opportunity to throw it at the landfill myself so I took a chance to put out an ad of which I was going to give it away. I attached the condition it was in and that those who picked it up would get a carpet plus more for free. It worked. After about two months or less, suddenly two people wanted them and could come pick them up within the same hour. The mattress and rug were given away and I was delighted and those who picked them up seemed to be happy. It couldn't get any better. Sometimes one's own garbage can be someone else's treasure. Really.
I have had several things such as clothes, bedding, shoes and other things that have looked like rubbish, with holes, visibly worn rags, but which others have been very happy to get. I have received so many thank you speeches from those who have come to collect the items and I am just as happy every time I get such feedback. So don't underestimate what you have until others have the opportunity to review what they like, need and that which they would say thank you for being allowed to get for free. Because it could mean a lot to them.

I, too, can identify with the woman on the elevator. In fact, when you told that story, I cried. Since your first book, I have listened, read, donated, trashed, did more reading, more listening and been inspired to live a more simple life. I have a long ways to go. Some days are easier than others. But listening to your weekly podcasts continue to give me the inspiration to move forward. Congrats on the new book! Cannot wait to read it! Continued success!!

I love this channel, I been living life slow for a long time now. I think is really important at this time and age programs like this. But at the end of the day. Everyone will have to be a minimalist by choice or by force.

I can identify with the woman in the beginning. 30-35 years is a long time, you look back at all that you were into and now it weighs on you when your focus should be on the you of the next 20 years. Imagine having a child and the changes they would have gone through by the time they are 30 years old, yet adults can carry around 30 years of what they used to be.

Getting ready to list our house we built in 1989. Now going deeper into the getting rid of stage. Releasing things family members have passed on to us but haven't been used in 35 years. It's not easy, but I don't want to drag these items with us into the next phase of our lives. We are in our late 60's and our kids are not interested in being caretakers of our things.

A lot of thrift stores do recycling as well so just because that item doesn't have value in being sold to another person doesn't mean it goes into the landfill. Our local store recycles anything metal as well as electronics (for a fee), most stores recycle unsellable clothing.

Be cool if you'll could talk about the tang ping or lying flat moment in China atm. It's basically a form of minimalism but a bit too extreme imo.

  • @liisaelts7522

I feel so weird listening to you, it gives me suh weird connections. Epiphany for this episode (I'm weird, I know): I like the moto of use what you've got. OK, so part of this is that after I did the declutter, I realized there are punch of stuff I kept buying again and again because I kept losing them. Turned out they weren't lost at all. But part of them I have this big pile of pencils I haven't really used, because my work space is always dead dark due me never getting around getting a proper lamp. So last month, after a year of putting up with dark space, I finally went and got myself a proper lamp to actually use the stuff I have instead of giving them away. Been doing far more things I keep putting off for future than I've done all year because of a damn light problem. So proper enviourment helps with using up the stuff, because yes, I could give them away but they are tools and well, why give away tools you can use? Yeah.
