I also have both pens and my conclusion is very much like yours. The older were so much fun to use and very versatile with water. I am disappointed to learn that they are now discontinued. Thanks for this good presentation.
Thank you very much! It's so sad when a good thing gets a less good makeover, or gets discontinued... There aren't many markers like the ones they stopped producing.
I have the new set. Sometimes I like them and sometimes I don’t.😊 but thanks for reminding me that I can use it like paint by scribbling it on the side first. In your test, that was the most consistent application. Thanks 🤗 Faith
The old ones look exactly like Tombows, which I love. These new ones are interesting, but shorter means less ink and nothing like the original. It's sad the new ones were less soluble. I like your water test.
Me too! About 18 yrs., they still work great and I like them better than any other brush marker out there! Only problem is I can't find them anymore. ☹
I searched in vain for a set of the Mars Graphic 3000 Duo. I read a review on Amazon in which someone claimed, that Kuretake Art & Graphic are a good substitute. They do indeed have a similar looking nib and even the colour numbers seem similar. Have you ever tried them? I bought a beautiful muted colours set and looooove them! I'd be interested in seeing a comparison video. Thanks for your great content Eve ❤❤
Ooo, I didn't know that! Thank you for the info! I'll add the Kuretake markers to my (long) wishlist, hopefully I can test them out soon! A comparison will be more difficult though, as my Mars Graphic Duo markers are long dead, except maybe for a black one (as I had bought more of that color open stock back then). Thanks again! :)
Perfect timing to find this video. I am looking to replace my old Marsgraphic 3000 Duo. I hope I can find them again as I LOVE them. Now based on your video, I know that is what I want....old ones :). Thankyou for the video
I like the Ecoline brush markers. They are super juicy and REFILLABLE!! I get them in the 5 count sets since there are no repeat colors. I started out with the primary and autumn sets and now i add a 5 set anytime i place an order. Try a 5 set next time you place an order, i think you will like them.
Terrific review. Really odd how that the color difference between the sets is so significant. One might expect they'd be more similar than more different. Those cap examples are similar to what I've experienced with Copic markers, so it's not surprising, tho it is disappointing. Thank you for your thoroughness in the review, but also for the smooth and high quality editing/video work. It's easy to miss that when it's done so well! Cheers, Eve! :)
Thanks a lot Mark! :) I was expecting them to be more similar since they have the same name, but nope. I've had better luck with my Copics, but I also made them a little dot identifier on the cap to see the actual color of the ink to make my life a bit easier. Do you have a favorite marker brand? Or type of markers?
Last year I had a work project that I needed Copic markers for. The price nearly made me faint, but I bought them. Since that project, I've found no use for them and they sit, which makes me sad. I rarely use markers now, but in the 80s and 90s, I used Letraset, Charpak, and Prismacolor, mostly for comps. I just discussed this recently with Marty Owings, and he feels much like I do that we both underuse our markers. Any advice?
Letraset and Prismacolor, I remember those (and I still have a bunch of them). I feel like I underuse mine as well, but it's mostly because a day only has 24 hours. I have a couple of ideas, but I need to stew on them a bit more and then I'll turn them into a video! Stay tuned ;)
Swatch them out. I have a Fabriano Ecoqua notebook/sketchbook with smooth paper that just laid around for a couple of years. I finally decided to use it as a color swatch book for pens, markers, colored pencils etc. It's a little tricky at times as water based markers and some pens will bleed through. Also, for markers with no color names or numbers on them I'll number them myself by sticking on small white stickers with a color number, color dot, and a two layer line. It's a slim book and is easy to throw in my backpack.
My guess is that the older 3000 version is probably artists grade and is pigment based vs the new maybe “student” grade with dye based ink. With the more vibrant colors it seems that way. A good way to tell is if you are able to reactivate the older one once it has dried. Either way..happy creating and thank for making the video!
Thanks for the information! :) It's always such a bummer when a nice product gets discontinued! I will enjoy drawing with the old ones, for sure, for as long as I can :)
I’m glad I could help! My absolute favorite marker pens are the Faber-Castell PITT Artist Pens! But I am a SUCKER for anything Staedtler. Their prices are so reasonable, I can’t help but pick up any new products they come out with!
Yes!!! I love them! On a side note..I keep swatches of all my media in a notebook so I can quickly find the color and product I need. Most do you have some kind of identification on them. Staedtler does not which is definitely a con for me. I have been able to download or locate color trackers for some of their products but not all. I’ve had to assign them numbers and write it on the barrel. Do you have any tips or information? I’ve checked everywhere I can think to look...
Great video Eve! 😁 I don't have either set, but as I was watching I thought the new markers would probably work great for adult coloring books. I noticed the markers got smaller...lol 😉
Thanks Val! :) I agree! The new markers would work really well for coloring books, and I think that was the idea behind the re-branding. I don't really have time for that though, so I'm not sure what to do with this set now XD
I have a few of the old ones and you can still find them in Japan and Korea, as of this last spring when I visited. I would like to try the new ones to see if the nib is firmer since it's shorter. I like how juicy the old ones are and also like the squeak of the old nib, but it's harder to control for what I use them which is modern calligraphy. Those old ones have exactly the same nib as a couple of Monami calligraphy pens I purchased while in Korea; it's a rubbery nib (hence the squeak on smoother papers) instead of the usual felt one.
The new ones have a felt tip that is definitely not as juicy as the rubbery one, but they are much shorter. They might work better for you, but they are not the best quality. I'm happy to hear the old model is not completely gone.
I have been trying to buy the old ones for over a year now and can't find them. Could u tell me how i could go about getting some. I have 2 from about 18 yrs ago that still work and i love them for modern calligraphy. I have bought all the new ones on the market and NONE compare to these old ones. Their tip is made of foam and all the new ones are felt which frays quickly and easily. I even wrote to the Staedtler company explaining all this and never got any reply. (Which I think was a little rude). Anyway would be so happy if u could help. Thank you.
The rubber tips are soo much better and long lasting than the felt tip, imho. Thanks for suggesting a replacement as my old Mars3000 are still going strong and I want more colours!
i got the older set at a dollar store, i was blown away by the quality and was gonna get that 36 set but now... since they changed the nib.... thats sad to hear.
I have this set and I like it a lot, but I have not tried it with water. I've mainly used it to add color in my sketchbook, and I love that it doesn't bleed through the paper. I was actually going to buy some Tombows but the store I was in only had these. : P Your review is very helpful; thank you for posting it. : ) I am disappointed that these do not seem to do well with water, but they do brighten my sketchbook, so they can stay.
I like the look of the old markers better too. I've never used them, but you've done an excellent job of demoing them. 🙆 I have the Staedtler Triplus Color fibre tip markers and plan on getting their set of 72 double ended fibre tip markers, sketching markers as they call them. They're on a list of art products on Amazon that I'm curious about. Of course there are a lot of water based markers on there lol because I don't use alcohol markers with the exception of Sharpie Ultra Fine Points and then only on watercolor paper not below 140lb/300gsm unless it's heavily sized. Alcohol markers bleed through almost every paper with exception of the above two and even they are variables depending upon sizing and materials they're made from. If I can't use both sides of a sheet then it's a waste of a sketchbook and most of what I create are going in sketchbooks. And also they won't bleed through Crescent's RENDR no bleed through no show through paper. The other product that claims to be similar is Canson's The Wall sketchbook. I've written you a novella 📕 huh lol? Sorry, I tend to do that. Anyways, links below. Here's the list on Amazon I keep of art products I keep. No I'm not rich b( 💰_💰)b lol. Curious yes. goo.gl/Lw1kX7 Crescent RENDR example goo.gl/gcSVa5 Canson's The Wall sketchbook www.dickblick.com/products/canson-the-wall-sketchbook/
Thanks! :) I don't see the interest of a dishonest review, so I'm honest all the time :) I agree, the older markers are better (for me, in the sense that they could be a serious professional tool, while the newer ones are more of a hobbyist tool.)
Hello my dear friend great review i just got this markers i got the 72 set i wanted to know if I could use them with water and be used as watercolor and you answered my question thank you very much for this great video blessings👼🙏❤ my dear friend 🐼🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗💞💕
Make sure your markers say Marsgraphic on them bc Staedtler makes another duo ended marker..the 320. I can’t find these new marsgraphic ones in a higher count than the 36. But any water based dye ink or water based pigment ink for that matter can be used for watercolor effects! So even if you don’t have the “watercolor” ones (and I’m pretty sure only named so bc of the one brush tip) you can still use them that way. The 320s have a bullet and finetip end. These have a brush and finetip end! Happy creating!!
Oh, wow! What an interesting discovery....and how lucky that you happened to have the originals lying around! It's really disappointing to me that it seems like the older markers perform in a way that I would much prefer, with better pigmentation and with better watersolubility. I mean, C'mon staedtler, I expect better from your products.
I agree! I had a stronger impression of quality from their products and even if this one is intended for a different market, it's also much lower in quality without justification. The markers are not super aesthetically pleasing, either. I hate when they dumb down or lower the quality of a product to sell at another market at a lower price. It always looks like they're betraying their standards lol
I don't personally own these, but there's a little local art shop in my town that has them, this was extremely helpful. I feel like I like the idea, but the color difference throws me off.
I`m not a big fan of this kind of markers. Maybe to add some colour in a sketchbook, but that`s it. If I were you I would probably sell them on ebay or give them into some kind of kindergarden or something like that.

Can i use them for calligraphy?
I don't do much calligraphy, so I wouldn't know. Sorry!
are the Marsgraphic 3000 duo markers water based or alcohol based
They are water-based, as far as I can tell. They have no smell.
I am guessing they are water based pigment vs water based dye ink. Pigment is much more vibrant in color
Anyone wanna tell me where I can use these? Cause I got no idea how Im gonna use them
Journaling, coloring books, as highlighters... :)
