Got one. Love it. 👍 Had to take the sharp 90⁰ edge off of the finger choil and take the front right top protrusion of the handle down some so's I can choke up comfortably. The balance is perfect there, you find that the weight of the knife does most of the work.
That looks like varnish on the wood, which will give you blisters on hard work. Sand it off with 400 paper, smooth with 600 paper and apply 2 or 3 coats of teak oil, which takes a couple days.
Looks like mild versions of the defects my pilots knife had. Ontario's quality control is on par with early 1990's Chinese production. Nice design though.
You know to me I prefer the prices of Ontario. I’ll take their price and have to reprofile and maybe fix a handle. Versus the ridiculous prices of places like tops. Really nowadays only a few places make big blades. As far as I know only Ontario still makes affordable stuff. I’m not a fan of condor anymore. I love Ontario machetes and SP series. I love that knife just don’t know what I would do with it. I prefer knives with a few different uses. That one looks heavy. I like the SP5 . But that is a beautiful knife
I agree with everything you said, I will never buy another tops knife, they are ridiculously thick, to the point that they cannot even cut, which is the ONE JOB A KNIFE SHOULD DO, and I don't buy condors anymore either because the three condors that I've bought where all three warped badly, ontario is absolutely the best maker out there
@@bladetherapy3797 it’s always nice when someone else thinks the same way. Really like to know how that knife holds up. I really love that line from the machete the kephart and that chopper. It’s a beautiful set of knives. Have a good one
Damn man that sucks with all the cosmetic issues. Looks like 1st shift ground one side and 2nd shift came in and ground the other side lol. Luckily these imperfections shouldn't hinder performance. With some time, will be interesting to know if the heat treatment and tempering was done right. I'm a big fan of hardwood handle scales. Sho is purty!
Yeah, definitely just my personal opinion that even with the imperfections this thing is perfect, perfect for me, it's going to have a very hard working career and be all scratched up soon enough, and besides, all those little things give it character
Out the Box 7 or 8 outta 10 I agree , I remember when they made that beast out of 5160 high carbon spring steel and then when I went to purchase one it was 420ss I still like the knife and it was a smaller blade that made as a companion blade. He has a good need for it being Stainless steel it seems. 😎
That a $82 to at the most $94 knife Ontario don't make expensive knifes ,they have so extremely good budget knives but they don't make high quality knives with high quality materials. Almost all of their knife I no of with exception of that one has rubber handle material, but a good knife guy can do upgrades on their stuff and use High Grade Wood ,G10 or Macarta ti make them better. Ontario is the go to company for hard uses & abuses knives. 🎭❄️🎭
Their blackbird uses premium SS. Cm 154 I believe. And it's cheap. Ontario could have at least given us Aus8 or 10 at that price. 420 is garbage. Even the 420 hc. Oh well.
the uneven bevel is the unique Ontario factory signature.

Looks like it was ground at Bark River

It's basically is a stainless steel wood handle version of the sp 50 and sp 51 but it looks nice

Sharp as it is, imagine if you gave it a good strop. 👍🏻

Mine is made from 5160 carbon steel
It sucks they started making them from 420HC
Hate that freaking sheath though...
Agreed, only reason I can figure they use these awful sheaths is to keep prices down
1600 sand paper will smooth the handle. If you leave this job to Ontario, this will be a 200 dollars knife.
10 outta 10? Hmmmmm. Maybe an 8 with all the cosmetic imperfections. But ofcourse this is only an opinion.

Wish Ontario would put out some better quality for what you pay for.

@@powerplay4real174the blackbird also has a g10 handle
@@powerplay4real174I would have gotten one if it didn't have a full flat grind. It's really a premium knife for the price.
too blunt at the front, and too thick at the edge, I already have a hatchet.
That’s not a knife
If the knife was perfect it would be a fake.
