  • The beauty of Sailing is that it resonates with so many people, it can be interpreted as simply being in a boat on the water or as complex as the transition we experience through art. I have been very touched by the way people relate to the song. - Christopher Cross

Sailing was recorded in 1979, utilizing the 3M Digital Recording System, making it one of the first digitally recorded songs to chart. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 30, 1980. The song won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Arrangement of the Year, and helped Cross win the Best New Artist award. Produced by Michael Omartian, it features Tommy Taylor on drums, Andy Salmon on bass, Rob Meurer on electric piano, and Victor Feldman on percussion. In 1980, Sailing was released as a single in Latin America under the translated (en español) title "Navegando".
On the Howard Stern radio show, Cross explained that sailing with his friend got him away from the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. Cross said that if the guy had taken him bowling and he enjoyed it, the song could have become "Bowling."

    LYRICS
Well, it's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
    And find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
    Just you wait and see
    Believe me
It's not far to never never land
    No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
    Of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
    Just you wait and see
    Believe me
    Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
    Soon I will be free
    Fantasy
It gets the best of me
    When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
    Every word is a symphony
    Won't you believe me?
    Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
    [Instrumental Bridge]
Well, it's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
    And find serenity
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
    Just you wait and see
    Really, believe me
    Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
    ABOUT CHRISTOPHER CROSS
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1979 self-titled debut album produced by Michael Omartian. The lead single “Ride Like The Wind” spent 4 weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was quickly followed up by Cross’ most popular single to date (and first #1 hit) “Sailing”, which later became known as the archetype for the Yacht Rock genre. In 1981, Cross became the first artist in Grammy history to win the “Big Four” most prestigious awards in a single night; Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. Later that year Cross released “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer, Peter Allen, and was the title-theme for the 1981 film “Arthur” starring Dudley Moorre and Liza Minnelli. The song earned Cross his second #1 and the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 1981 Academy Awards. Cross’ sophomore album “Another Page” was released in 1983 and featured the singles “Think of Laura” and “All Right”. Cross has sold over 10M albums worldwide and his songs have been covered and sampled by NSYNC, Puff Daddy, Avant, Shirley Bassey, Dione Warwick, and many more.

Oh what a beautiful song this is. I just remember how entranced I was, when I first heard this song. This gem encompasses many fond memories of my childhood. The radio stations played it so often it beautifully blended into so many blissful memories during the summer months. I still listen to this song several times over, now being 58, it relaxes me to the point where, it can even lower my blood pressure, probably better than the medications do, that are prescribed for me.
Christopher Cross, I want to thank you for instilling much peace into my days. 💕

Chris, when I was a child in Brazil and I heard your voice on the radio, I thought your voice and Simon Le Bon's were so beautiful that I thought: "No, this can't be real" 😅❤❤ I imagined that it wasn't a person's, it was like if it were magical, like an angel. Today I understand this feeling, it's that God chose you to have one of the most beautiful voices in the world.

We were in college. She was a gorgeous blonde with blue eyes, a beach volleyball player and a real beach bunny ... we spent a lot of time together one summer ... jogging near the Pacific Ocean in the Pacific Palisades where she lived, spending time at the Santa Monica Beach Club, eating great meals out and drinking a lot of fantastic wines ... she came to several of my gigs and loved my band and our music ... we remained "just friends" because I was already in a committed relationship. In the end, I did the right thing and I can live with that. She married, then divorced. I married a really fantastic woman, we have 2 fantastic children who are crushing it, and my wife and I celebrated our 37th anniversary a few months ago. My wife's and my first date was at Gladstone's for Fish ... in the Pacific Palisades of all places ... I always think about the Pacific Palisades whenever I hear "Sailing" and the beautiful summer and first date that have left indelible marks on my heart and life.

It is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. At 1980 Grammy’s, “Sailing” won the Song of the Year and the Record of the Year awards. Christopher Cross won as the New Artist as his self-titled debut album was also the winner of Album of the Year. “Christopher Cross” was the first L.P. album I bought in my life. I’m a big fan from the Philippines 🇵🇭

Christopher's voice gets me every time! The only thing wrong with this song is that it is not long enough!
l was on my way to paradise when l first heard this beautiful song (Honolulu from the UK) but l flew not by sail! 😉
The only thing that spoilt my 6 month stay was Mark Chapman! He lived down the road, 1980, from where l was staying, l heard he borrowed
the money to go and do his deadly deed!! l am from Merseyside and a big Beatles fan! l am lost for words! Another beautiful soul, John Lennon. l digress away from the masters voice that is Christopher Cross...very much in my heart for more than one reason!

So beautiful to read these lovely comments about the memories of this fantastic song and its importance for so many people.
I too have memories of this song.
The first time I heard it I was around 20 years old and was playing in a Scottish folk group.
We were playing outside and the sea was only 50 yards away from us.
While listening and before we started our gig, this song was playing and all I could do was watch the sparkle of the sea at that wonderful moment.
Sailing gave me goosebumps and I felt it was the most satisfying song I ever heard.
I am the only one still alive from our band and Sailing gives me heartwarming memories of my dear band members on a wonderful Summer evening beside the sea.
God bless Christopher Cross for this heartwarming and wonderful song.

Yes, through art. You had a video, that played along with this song , and in the video, the people were painting on an easel, with their pallets of colors.
That video inspires me to be creative, develop some artistic skill and to try easel painting. And while I’m painting , your song will be playing. Whatever happened to that video? I can no longer find it. I loved it.

I have been on a quest to find all of their music that they liked, and it has been awesome still enjoying the music with my parents. I’m only a gen z teenager who is the only person my age I know who even knows this song exists.
