Thanks! Wesley Snipes, Allen Payne and Judd Nelson where the only legitimate SAG actors on here besides Mario Van Peebles who directed the film and stared in it. You mentioned the acting but you have to put in context this is not a big budget film and your used to more modern films so no excuses but trying to contextualize .Thanks for another banger!
The movie is called New Jack City, for a couple of reasons. 1. The popular music genre of the time was called "New Jack Swing" (The main creator and most famous producer of the music genre is Teddy Riley of the group Guy, they appear at the second club scene singing the song "New Jack City") 2. At the time of release (1991), a popular slang term for someone new to something, was "New Jack". You could substitute New Jack for Rookie back in those days.
Also, the writer of this movie wrote an article about the drug war in Detroit that was literally called "New Jack City". You broke it down perfectly though. Respect
Mario Van Peebles worried that with Wesley's charisma people would put him more as a hero in the movie, so he had Nino hide behind the little girl as he was being shot out and then he had Wesley add lib with the scene where he poured champagne over his ex. She wasn't expecting any of that, but they wanted to seize that scene. Also that was Ice T's first acting role, playing a cop (something he dispised at the time)
This movie is a time period piece...... it's the beginning of the crack era which lasted roughly about 20 years it came on the scene in 1984 but really popped off in 1986..... this is how she really was it really did take over the whole buildings
Fun Fact: Cash Money Records the label's name alludes to the Cash Money Brothers, drug kingpin Nino Brown's gang from the 1991 crime film New Jack City. The building The Carter, Lil Wayne named his breakout album series after.
New Jack City is about NYPD trying to bring down a drug dealer & his crew. This movie launched a lot of careers such as Wesley Snipes, Ice-T, Chris Rock & Allen Payne. Fun Fact: Martin Lawrence was supposed to play Pookie but didn’t due to the death of his mentor comedian/actor Robin Harris who played in House Party as Kid’s father. New Jack City, Boyz N The Hood, Juice & Menace II Society is the Mount Rushmore of hood classics.
The young vocal group singing outside The Carter Apartments was “Troop”. Check their video “Spread My Wings”. I love the singing, beat, and dancing. It was the during the start of R&B blending with Hip-Hop.
I love this movie! I can quote almost every line in it for every character. 😂 Judd Nelson, the "white guy" is actually a really good actor. He's been acting since the 80's and was a part of the Brat Pack, a group of actors that starred in a lot John Hughes movies like The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo's Fire. Ice-T started off a rapper and was very anti police. He had been in a movie(Breakin') as a DJ before, but this was his first main role. Thanks for the reaction!
You mean 1988-1992. 1993 has more in common with 1994-1996. I mean New Jack Swing was around in the mid 90s, but the style in 1993-1997 was different than 1988-1992.
Frank Lucas was known for hanging ppl over bridges and the naked drug workers. Pappy Mason's drug crew killed a cop for fun and took over a NYC projects
Another classic 1990's film I just re-watched recently is "Judgment Night" from 1993. It's very suspenseful and will make you think twice about taking a wrong detour in Chicago or any big city. Denis Leary gives a terrifying performance as the lead villain chasing down the protagonists of the movie who are witness to a murder committed by Leary's character. It's definitely worth a video reaction and has a great soundtrack as well!
Seeing Nino breakdown knowing he was gonna kîłł his brother was emotional. He didn't have to take out G-Money but he told him what would happen if Scotty was 5-0.
I watched this movie at an age I had no business viewing it. This film scared me straight to never get into this lifestyle. This is one of Ice T’s first roles if not his first, so that’s why his acting may seem off. This movie was really the Wesley Snipes show. Some may even argue this is his best performance. Fun Fact: I heard somewhere Martin Lawrence was originally targeted for the Pookie role, but Chris Rock was the better option.
He actually got the part but Robin Harris died during filming and he was too distraught to do the movie. He paid homage to the movie on his show.@@91Definite
Did you notice that in the scene where he shoots G-Money there's no special effects, no blood, no bullet wound, no discharge from the gun, no recoil, nothing lol
New Jack City was a complete classic here in Afrika, in it's own right and completely separate from Scarface, two different eras and very different preconditions.
30:11 “ is he jump rope with chains” ⛓️⛓️Lmao gotta love MJ💙🫶🏾💍 great review baby girl. You have to watch. “IN TOO DEEP” with LL Cool J. classic Hood movie👌🏾👌🏾
In the late 80s thru the 90's there was very popular music which mixed R&B and Hip-Hop, it was called New Jack Swing.. New Jack Swing was a whole subculture at the time which also included style of dress.. The title of the movie comes from that subculture.. Most of the music is considered new jack swing.. You should check out the soundtrack to this movie.. It's fire.
Fun Facts: Clint Eastwood helped the director Mario Van Peebles (Son of Melvin Van Peebles, for those who don't know is also a director. One is called The Watermelon Man is when black actor Godfrey Cambridge plays a white man who becomes black while his white wife, son, and daughter stays the same.) Clint and Mario did a war movie called Heartbreak Ridge and Mario directed some episodes of 21 Jump Street and Warner Bros. was like "I don't know, he haven't directed anything yet." Clint came in and he was like "Give the kid a shot". Tupac Shakur auditioned for Gee Money but he was too young and IMDB said "he looked younger than Wesley Snipes." Allen Payne was the youngest actor of the cast than. Either they were saying Pac actually looked like he could be Wesley's little brother or their grammar was off. Before Judd Nelson two actors who I think could have been awesome was Steve Buscemi and Johnny Depp as Nick Peretti. It would be badass to see Ice-T hanging with Steve Buscemi or Johnny Depp in a movie. But Johnny Depp was too expensive.
Mario also directed an episode of Wiseguy. Like 21Jump Street, they were produced by the late TV producer Stephen J. Cannell ("The Rockford Files", "The A-Team"). Cannell also produced the short-lived detective series, "Sonny Spoon" starring Mario and his dad Melvin. I could imagine Depp as Peretti, but I don't think he wanted to play a cop again after leaving 21 Jump Street.
@charlesnyckd So in another universe we could have got Blair Underwood as Nino Brown Taimak aka Bruce Leroy as Scotty Appleton Tupac Shakur as Gee Money Martin Lawrence as Pookie Vivica Fox as Keisha Patrick Dempsey as Nick Peretti
@charlesnyckd I honestly didn't know Patrick was considered at one point, but he's a year younger than Chris Rock, and I guess Pookie is like someone in his late teens' early 20s so it would a little weird since they both had baby faces in the early 90s.

Nino Brown was definitely the villain. The way he took over the Carter and what he did at the wedding says it all. Going after innocent people and using innocent people as shields is a no-no for me.

I honestly like “Sugar Hill” more than “New Jack City”! “New Jack City” was more of a movie of a drug kingpin that couldn’t be touched not even the police couldn’t take him down and a old man took him out which is unheard of. “Sugar Hill” was more reality of a street hustler tryna leave the drug game behind. Yet everyone around him was too fucked up in their own ways to wanna join him like the father and older brother

Great reaction, I was a horrible person during these times when New Jack City was made. I’ve changed my life around, now I mentor young people not to get into that lifestyle. I’m lucky I made it out alive, but yes I was heavy in that lifestyle for 26 years. I’m one of the rare people who actually did a lot and able to live a modest life, but it still bothers me today how many people I’ve hurt and destroyed neighborhoods. Hopefully god forgive me, I don’t know we’re see when my time is up. But yes I was the real deal back then
The New Jack in New Jack City refers to the "New Jack Swing"....it was a genre of music like Neo Soul......Artists like SWV....Guy (who was performing at the club)....Today.....Christopher Williams...etc....was part of the New Jack Swimg sound.....hopefully that helps
Fun Fact: the one who played Reverend Oates is Nikolas Ashford of a married singing duo, Ashford & Simpson, from the 70s though 2011 after Ashford's passing.

The guy that you said that you might remember seeing before that played as G. He was also in CB4 with Chris Rock & Fasion Love just to name a few more other movies that he was also in and he also starred in Tyler Perry's TV Show Sitcom called House Of Payne playing as C.J. just to name another show.
In case you would like to know more about the bangin’ music you from beginning to end, the songs you heard in this movie that are on the soundtrack are as follows; 1. New Jack Hustler by Ice T( played while Scotty was chasing Pookie) 2. I’m Dreamin’ by Christopher Williams (the second song played at the end credits) 3. I Wanna Sex You Up by Color Me Badd (played while Gee-Money’s girl, Uniqua was doing her dance in front of the tv screen) 4. I’m Still Waiting by Johnny Gill (played while Nino was in bed with, Uniqua) 5. (There You Go) Telling Me No Again by Keith Sweat,(who was performing the song at the wedding, before the big shootout) 6. New Jack City,(the title track) by Guy (which was performed at the new year’s eve party at the club) 7. Facts Of Life by Danny Madden (played when the Italian dude came to talk to Nino) 8. For The Love of Money/Living For The City by Queen Latifah featuring Troop and LeVert (played in the opening credits, sung while Nino and his gang were talking over The Carter, played at the New Years Eve party in the club,[shortly before the Italians came to see Nino], and played at the ending) 9. Lyrics To The Rhythm by Essence (played just before Scotty and Peretti popped up on the Italian dude) 10. (Get It Together)Black Is A Force by F.S. Effect (played while Scotty asked the kids On the stoop where Nino lived) And finally 11. In The Dust by The 2 Live Crew (played while Duh Duh Duh Man, Nino, and Gee-Money were riding around in the Jeep) Also, the songs in the movie that are not on soundtrack are; the intro to Straight Outta Compton,(”You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge”) by NWA,(played in the very beginning), The Show by Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick,(played when Nino first went into the club and was announced by Flavor Flav), and The Redhead One by Redhead Kingpin And The F.B.I.,(played when the cops busted into The Carter). Sorry if this comment was way too long for you to read, but I just wanted to let you know about the bangin’ soundtrack and the extra songs included in the movie. New Jack is also an era of music that was played around that time. New Jack swing is just up tempo R&B as you hear in the movie.

You remember Allen Payne from a lot of movies and shows
Keep up the great work. I'm so proud of you girl 💜🤞🏼
But yes I was the real deal back then
The older gentleman singing the the name of the group Levert
The New Jack in New Jack City refers to the "New Jack Swing"....it was a genre of music like Neo Soul......Artists like SWV....Guy (who was performing at the club)....Today.....Christopher Williams...etc....was part of the New Jack Swimg sound.....hopefully that helps
"John wick franchise " and the new "The continental from the world of John wich" 3 episode series... best soundtrack and action scenes
Fun Fact: the one who played Reverend Oates is Nikolas Ashford of a married singing duo, Ashford & Simpson, from the 70s though 2011 after Ashford's passing.
Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson were also songwriters that started out in the 1960s. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" is one of their big hits.
The movie "Trespass" would be an interesting pick for a reaction.
The soundtrack for this on my regular rotation
Someone reacting to New Jack City?? Now my subscription is personal, not business 😎
Keep it fresh, Fam! Another gem from 90s about the d*g game that nobody else is reacting to is Deep Cover (1992).
Deep Cover is my shit
Hell. Yeah. Deep Cover is spectacular
One my favorites 🙏🏾🙏🏾
The guy that you said that you might remember seeing before that played as G. Money is actor Allen Payne, and he also started off his acting career on the last couple of seasons of The Cosby Show playing as Lance and then later New Jack City and he also starred in a few more movies too when The Cosby Show ended such as Jason's Lyric with Jada Pinkett Smith,Treach of Naughty By Nature,Bokeem Woodbine,Eddie Griffin, and others.
He was also in CB4 with Chris Rock & Fasion Love just to name a few more other movies that he was also in and he also starred in Tyler Perry's TV Show Sitcom called House Of Payne playing as C.J. just to name another show.
Keep in mind IT'S THIS MOVIE that put Wesley Snipes, on the map, way before he did BLADE
Somebody request “ Lean On Me” Morgan freeman
Better Than Remember The Titans 💯
11:46 RIP Bill Cobbs.😢
You not gon like how pookie end up😅😂
That shit was fucked up, the fact they wanted Martin Lawrence to play a stick up kid turned crack head
She mentions Ice T's bad acting but this was his first role.
In case you would like to know more about the bangin’ music you from beginning to end, the songs you heard in this movie that are on the soundtrack are as follows;
1. New Jack Hustler by Ice T( played while Scotty was chasing Pookie)
2. I’m Dreamin’ by Christopher Williams (the second song played at the end credits)
3. I Wanna Sex You Up by Color Me Badd (played while Gee-Money’s girl, Uniqua was doing her dance in front of the tv screen)
4. I’m Still Waiting by Johnny Gill (played while Nino was in bed with, Uniqua)
5. (There You Go) Telling Me No Again by Keith Sweat,(who was performing the song at the wedding, before the big shootout)
6. New Jack City,(the title track) by Guy (which was performed at the new year’s eve party at the club)
7. Facts Of Life by Danny Madden (played when the Italian dude came to talk to Nino)
8. For The Love of Money/Living For The City by Queen Latifah featuring Troop and LeVert (played in the opening credits, sung while Nino and his gang were talking over The Carter, played at the New Years Eve party in the club,[shortly before the Italians came to see Nino], and played at the ending)
9. Lyrics To The Rhythm by Essence (played just before Scotty and Peretti popped up on the Italian dude)
10. (Get It Together)Black Is A Force by F.S. Effect (played while Scotty asked the kids On the stoop where Nino lived)
And finally 11. In The Dust by The 2 Live Crew (played while Duh Duh Duh Man, Nino, and Gee-Money were riding around in the Jeep)
Also, the songs in the movie that are not on soundtrack are; the intro to Straight Outta Compton,(”You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge”) by NWA,(played in the very beginning), The Show by Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick,(played when Nino first went into the club and was announced by Flavor Flav), and The Redhead One by Redhead Kingpin And The F.B.I.,(played when the cops busted into The Carter).
Sorry if this comment was way too long for you to read, but I just wanted to let you know about the bangin’ soundtrack and the extra songs included in the movie. And if you’re able to get the soundtrack, you will love it from beginning to end.
I had to live through this in that era NYC in the 80’s looked like a bomb came and hit especially in the Bronx Queens and Brooklyn
