Products like waxoil are both good and terrible. All too often people don't put them on new vehicles where rust is already present. The wax oil won't stop this rust which will creep. If the part isn't rusty then it does have value. The same applies to bituminous undersealers. I have just been laboriously scraping this off cleaning and neutralising surface rust and epoxy coating. I prefer epoxy because if there is a subsequent problem you will find it. Box sections are always a problem. And if you drive your vehicle into salt water it's terminal.

Flip back up the comments, we’ve explained this a few times. Our job was to remove it and replace it with our dry underbody treatment. It was the worst we’ve ever had to remove. It was so thick. We’ve never said it did a bad job. We just don’t like the stuff, it’s messy and gets everywhere and if applied late, it locks the rust in

Got to admit I am in agreement with quite a few comments in saying that waxoil is actually a pretty good rust preventer . It might not look the best especially if there hasn't been a lot of preparation but it is easy to apply and reapply when needed . There is definitely alternatives , lanolin based are supposed to be good , or something like dinitrol , remember though that to pay for a quality prep and coating is likely to be way over £1000 .

I just keep my chassis moderately clean, and oily. Oil based paint, kept

I'm not into waxoyl, or anything that laminates, causing capillary action.

Rust kills LandRovers. My first one nearly broke in half. since then I have had six LandRovers and WaxOyled them all, I even have an attachment on a long plastic pipe so
I can treat the full length of the chassis internally. It also means thar nuts and bolts can be remoned for maintenance and prevents galvanic corrosion. If you hate WaxOyl so
much please recommend an alternative way of stopping the rot short of rebuilding the whole thing onto a galvanised chassis. Cheers.

Fantastic video, keep up the good work! If I may ask what ratios do you guys run in your transfer boxes for all the different engines? I recently drove a 300tdi defender with a discovery transfer box but I didn't really like the ratios, first gear was too tall. I am thinking of putting the ashcroft special 1.301 ratio in my 300tdi for better road speed. Also do you fit the V8 fifth gear ratios in your 200tdi/300tdi builds sometimes? Does it make a difference? It is between the 1.301 ratio and the V8 5th gear ratio for me. Thank you.

    • @michaelmueller7962
      @michaelmueller7962 3 місяці тому

I'd recommend leave everything as standard as possible. Any ratio longer than the original 1.41 will be too long for the in my opinion already quite tall first gear.
Yes, a longer fifth gear would be nice on longer trips with not too much load over mostly flat terrain. However, towing, fully loaded or in the hills it will be very long and make the engine work unnecessary hard. The original gearing is there for a reason. My experience is, the more people change/modify, the more likely something does not go as planned.

How would that work inside a chassis cavity? It simply wouldn’t do anything of value. In my opinion it’s snake oil.

I've stripped a 130 and a 110 chassis of waxoil, nasty job, I've usually been a big fan and there's no doubt that cavity wax certainly prevents corrosion from the inside, however, we see lorry's on the road every day, they cover millions of miles in all weather's and don't have their chassis covered with Waxoil, they're painted with decent quality chassis paint. Usually they have a lot of ancillary components painted at the same time, engine, box, air tanks, lines etc are all painted, a lot of commercials are done in the same way, I'd think it would look decent on a Defender.
2 points Dave, is that a 40 year old Defender or a pre Defender Land Rover 110? And is that a series 2 as it looks like it has a series 3 dash, grille and door hinges, it's also a late reg for an S2 or S2A. 👍

Bit confused by the title... Are you saying that using a rust preventing wax is a 'bad' idea?
I'm a Fluid Film guy, because that's all that's easily available locally (I'm in Norway) and yes, it's messy, yes it's sticky, gunky stuff and yes, it's a pain when you need to do any work, you get lathered in it, but...
On the upside, I know that my car has a fair shot at lasting a while. Without it I'd be lucky to get 15 years out of it before the tinworm eats it all up...

Only brandnew material can be treated with Waxoil, allthough I do prefer Lineoil, as it’s moleculair structure fits with the structure of metal. Older material will rust faster when treated with any other than Lineoil.

This would be much more informative and easier to watch without all the plinky plonky noises accompanying it. It is not a hollywood production nor is it a drama of any kind. The noises are distracting and unnecessary in this type of video. Secondly I am assuming the owner of this vehicle does not intend to take it off road other than perhaps a lane or grassy field. If he does he will find the twin tailpipes of that very nice exhaust will be below the mud levels on steep uphills and will rapidly become clogged up. Also there is probably not enough clearance between it and the rear axle where extreme alternate articulation occurs unless both axles are to be fitted with a lifted suspension.

++@@wearemahker++ Well I am sorry if you are upset by my comments. Instead I was annoyed and distracted and, I am sorry to say, forced to cut short my viewing of your work.

++@@wearemahker++ Well once again I apologise for any offence I might have caused, thick skin notwithstanding. However I find it hard to believe that, having the number of subscribers you claim, you have not encountered criticism of one kind or another before. I would suggest that every single site on YT whatever the content or genre, yes, even those of a purely technical nature, receive posts of a negative, even adverse nature at one time or another whether or not they asked for it. Some indeed almost continuously. That is, put simply, the nature of the internet. You suggest your channel is probably not for me; in return may I suggest YT is probably not the place for a channel such as yours, unless of course your entire 35000 subscribers are all simpering acolytes bowing in awe of your spannering, which I very much doubt.
