Thousands have people have made the mistake you made, there are 3 splines that need to click in slowly as you slowly and gently draw the engine and auto box together as you turn the flex plate back and forth, we all had to learn the hard way once, there is only one way to learn and that's to do it, and fair play for you for doing it, good luck with it all. They are great vehicles to learn on and keep going. Best wishes from the UK
The Zf is tricky to getting the converter aligned with the front pump and input shaft. there are dimensions from the trans bell housing face to converter mounting face that ensure proper engagement. The converter MUST be put on the trans before transmission is connected to the engine. converter is bolted to flex plate through starter hole or access plate.
Its funny how Mike just stood back and watched, then said "ive never seen it done like that before" great to see your moving forward with it, your a great thinker, you can look at the problem and fabricate something to work. I think Mike was happy to see someone else struggling for a change and just soaked up the atmosphere .
Good to see you still smiling after all the hassle Ludi, engine sounds sweet when it started up. And obviously you got there. Good for you. Doesn’t Mike scrub up well with his smart top on, didn’t recognise him. Cheers, looking forward to the next film. 👍🏻😊
You have to fit the t/c to the trans, and then fit it together, and then go up through that ridiculously small hole in the bell housing to fit the bolts. Nice to see mike in his stepping out clothes.
Nothing worse than getting something all back together and it doesn't work! Great that you have a replacement. Fingers crossed for next time. Really want to see this ambitious project succeed.👍
So 3 steps forward and two back is still a step forward mate. If its in and running then THAT is a big result. Well done. Nice mix of Northern English, Canadian English and French going on there!
Breaking the pump trying to fit the "box"onto the torque converter is a common workshop mistake, there is no safe shortcut to avoid struggling with flex plate bolts through small , inaccessible holes with "special" tools !!!
As a wise man once said to me “ it’s easy not to make mistakes if you do nothing”. Don’t worry, I made the same mistake on a D2. It happens to the best of us ( that have no experience with autos and all experience with manual gearbox’s ) good job. Cheers Peter
Well done for trying this, conversions are past what I would attempt. Just curious why you didn’t use a VW gearbox, and then just make an adapter for the transfer box? I’m sure I have seen other conversions done that way.
@@ludwigseeley6359 you know what, I think you hit the nail on the head, VW don’t do any rear wheel drive I can think of. So I guess you had no choice. The conversions I saw used BMW 330 Diesel engine, and Mercedes OM606 engines, both of which come as rear wheel drive so used the original gearbox and had an adapter plate to connect to the transfer box. They must have had a shaft made up as well, similar to Mikes conversion he did.
@@Rob-cz7lg I looked into those! But to get a om606 engine around here is like 1500$! So kind of expensive.. didn’t find any Beamer diesels but they are a cool option!
Going well mate. It was nice of Mike to drop over and give advice but wait until you get his bill! Jk. Cheers and good luck with the competition. It’s probably over by now. 👍🏻🙏🏽🙏🏽😷😷🦘🦘
Almost didn't recognize Mike without his blue shop coat. Nice celebrity cameo. Keep going Ludi, you can do this!
Haha! Thanks ;)
You took the words right out of my mouth.!!

Totally agree! Thanks, I'll need it I think haha
Ludy . You can rem ove the front pump assy and replace the front section. Way easier and quicker.
Don't have one! but I do have a second transmission ;) Might rebuild the second one as a backup later on though!

Yep that's exactly what I did! The SECOND time ;)

Its all about the learning process Ludwig. In any event you have done an amazing job. Good luck for the restart.
Yep! I’m all about learning WITH PAIN
@@ludwigseeley6359 No pain no gain. Isn't that they say. Haha.

Are there any rear wheel drive application gearboxes made my VW ?
