Her resume is irrelevant when the proof of credibility is in the story and script she wrote that got James Gunn's approval.
Writing is different from directing. Someone like Gunn can judge if a script can be made into a great film. Directing can't be judged ahead of time at all.
Its subjective. They just scrapped his acme film he wrote
@@henryedwards6030it’s being shopped
@headlessherald I know that, but why sell a big legendary brand like Road Runner
@@henryedwards6030because WB execs have very little respect for animation.
@latishabuckner8231 I would argue that because they keep dropping dc animated movies, including a few, this year. Unless you are talking about live action with animation in it
Fun Fact: Good Will Hunting was Ben Affleck's and Matt Damon's first wrting credit.
Hey, even Tarantino had to start somewhere. Let's just wait and see.
We have had experienced writers put out some absolute garbage. Experience isn’t equal to talent or quality of product
To be fair, there are many stories of first time writers knocking it out of the park.
John Campea is uneducated on this topic. She’s a very successful playwright. A good writer is a good writer regardless of the template. Gone Girl was written by the author of the book despite her never writing a film before. Don’t know if she’s good or not but it’s wrong to say she’s never written anything before.
And the screenplay for the Amazon Prime adaptation of Panic was also written by the author of the book, Lauren Oliver, the reviews weren't great, and it didn't get renewed for a seconds season.
There will always be exceptions, but being a great writer in one medium doesn't always mean that writer will be just as good in other formats. That's because each medium has different demands and styles, and not every writer is suited to switching between them.
It's the same with acting or directing, for example. A great theatre actor doesn't always do well on film or TV, and vice versa. Just as a talented TV director isn't necessarily able to make the move to the big screen.
@@orangeviktor Your example is horrible. Panic is a book that had a VERY mixed reception from the start. It’s not a beloved book known for great writing. It’s derived young adult schlock. You have to actually be a good writer in one medium for it to translate and yes it usually translates pretty damn well. Playwrights especially translate pretty seamlessly to the screen. Even if what you’re saying was true, it doesn’t make my point wrong. Campea said she’s not a writer and has done nothing but a short film. This is wrong. She’s a successful playwright that is actually pretty well respected. For him to not even mention that means he didn’t know. In other words, he was uneducated on the topic. The argument you’re making for him is one he himself didn’t make.
@@rougarabid I disagree completely. Writing for one medium, even being a great writer in that form, doesn't automatically make you a great writer in others. Of course, there will always be exceptions, but with respect, I think you're playing down the major differences in writing for the stage and the screen, as well as other forms. For example, John Ridley is an award winning screen writer, but his comic book work hasn't been as well received.
John's point is that Ana Nogueira's CV is quite light for someone taking on a major comic book property, one that will likely have a large budget, with all the pressure that brings, especially after the relative underperformance of the DCEU.
Could John be wrong? Of course. As a CBM fan, I'm sure John himself hopes he will be. As a fan of these films (and their source material) I hope he's proven wrong as well. However, this choice is a gamble, and one that WB/DC, considering their struggles, might regret making.
@@orangeviktor You’re giving John points he didn’t make. What he said was he looked at IMDB and saw 1 writing credit for 1 short film. He didn’t mention she was a playwright and didn’t mention at all what you’re saying about being untested in a particular field of writing. You are saying this not him. He spoke without properly looking into what her writing background was. If this was his point than this would be a viable argument I could either agree or disagree with. It wasn’t. His argument, the only one he gave, was that she has no writing experience which isn’t true. That’s my point.
@@rougarabid John never says that Ana Nogueira has no writing experience. He references her short film experience in the video, for example from 1:49 - 1:56. What John is clearly implying is that it's unusual to choose such an inexperienced writer to write the script for a big comic book blockbuster, which will have a lot of expectations riding on it. He's not saying that Nogueira is a bad writer. John even says that Gunn must have faith in her script. He's just concerned that Nogueira has very little experience in writing for screen (which is a factual statement, not a comment on her skill as a writer), and for WB/DC, which is staking a lot on this rebooted DC cinematic universe, that's a big risk to take.
Jk Rowlings first published book was harry potter but she has been writing and practicing since she was 6. Writing is different from directing. You dont need to have a greenlit script to have that experience of writing. From Gunns wording she has already handed in a treatment and he likes it. Its not like he plucked her from the streets and said write the next supergirl script, you are already hired.
I don’t have a problem with this. She obviously provided a script that Gunn liked. It’s not like directing at all.
There are alot of seasoned writers that have not done a good job with Marvel and DC movies. I am optimistic on what she has to offer.
Not too worried about, “New” writers in an industry that needs to break their patterns.
Nobody is committed to making the script until they… read it.
Good Will Hunting (Oscar winner)
True Romance
Sling Blade (Oscar winner)
Movies, good movies are written by, “New” writers.
I put new in quotes because most writers have a TON of scripts that aren’t published, weren’t picked up. Writers don’t start their writing with their first credit. You kinda cover this but it goes deeper. “New” writers have often written books, plays, stories… etc.
Unproduced film scripts are RARELY published.
Finally, actors see more scripts than almost anyone in any other career. Perhaps they see more scripts than many scriptwriters. Career actors often have an easier time switching to scriptwriting than most.
No clue if this is a good script… or if she should write it… but I trust folks will consider what she put on the page before investing millions to produce her script.
James Gun is Troma trained. I HOPE he brings in new faces and writers, like Lloyd Kauffman did with HIM.
Thanks for the upload.
If she was a first time director, I would be concerned. I've seen well established writers write shit.
The film has been written already. Sure, there will be revisions and rewrites before they go into production, but clearly James Gunn (who is a great writer) loved the script to have announced this.
@@JayThaleafor reading?
@@JayThalea the writer that was just announced already wrote the script. It was announced PUBLICLY today, and of course he has to have the time to do more than just pre-production on Superman Legacy. He's the CEO of a studio dawg
She's a playwright, she has tons of experience. This is just her first film script.
what is a playwright?
@@4ProStudios is someone who writes plays.
This is a nothing burger. Gunn read a fire script and decided to "buy" it by hiring the writer. Gunn's a writer himself and will fine tune it with Ana over many drafts.
Okay, I'm probably not getting any marks for originality here, but I guess we all trust that James is...sticking to his GUNN's
I wonder where his hesitancy was when Kelly Marcel was announced as the director for Venom 3.
I think she'll do great. At least i hope that she does. You don't sit down with James Gunn and proceed to get hired unless you've got the skill to create a good product. Plus i'm sure James will touch up areas of the script. I choose to be optimistic!
I mostly share opinions with John, but I really dislike this take! Why would you call out/criticize someone like that? How can you judge someone without even any reference?? Maybe she puts out a great script. We just dont know AT ALL. And writing is something different than directing. And when it comes to writing, can it really be worse than the shit from experienced writers we recently get from Marvel?
Taking out the fact that she's a playwright; a Rick and Morty writer wrote Ant-Man 3, experienced writers aren't guaranteed
Well to be fair, she'll be watched and that script might be changed before making it official, also she has a guide with the cómic book, so it is not a work from 0. At least she has like 30% of an idea of how to pitch it.
The only way it makes sense is if she already wrote the entire thing and pitched it to them and it was absolutely amazing. No guesswork.
She was hired by Hamada to write a different Supergirl film, and Gunn liked that script so much that he not only hired her for his new Supergirl film, but also gave her an overall writing deal with DC Studios.
@@johngrayson9218 makes sense!
Everyone has to start somewhere after all. I have to think she impressed Gunn with her script.
Plus it's DC Studios first movie. They haven't been their own studio for even a year.
I'm not nervous because according to GUNN, the script has already been written and it's great. That is all that matters. Akiva Goldsman (who won the Oscar for writing "A Beautiful Mind" ) wrote 'Batman & Robin".
It's good that they got a writer for Supergirl movie. Can't wait to hear more news about the DCU Supergirl movie.
*FYI A lot of terrible big budget movies are written by experience writers* 🇵🇭
Yeah, I feel like Hollywood could definitely use some new talent, though I hear this lady is actually a playwright.
Jesus he really just picked that topic to fill time. Writing is not directing. And you don’t need to shoot a script that’s not good. She probably wrote a great script and Gunn said: “Yeah, let’s shoot that.” Nothing wrong with that. The difference between a writer and almost any other craft is that writers actually sometimes just fall out of the sky and are good at what they do without any training or actual experience. That’s something that practically never happens with other filmmaking or creative disciplines.
^This. Some people are innately talented writers, and the writing will go through drafts with feedback from Gunn. Directing is time sensitive, and delays mean wasted $$$.
If Gunn is working up to the Batman Superman comicbook where Supergirl was introduced I'd be very happy. Plus there's been a lot of good storylines in the comicbooks with Supergirl. I especially enjoyed the Linda Danvers run in the 90s which was all about sacrifice, angels and demons.
Sorry but Campea's mentality here sounds like typical Hollywood fallacy of fame over content. I agree that in general, new people should start small (I'd certainly want to). But if someone shows you their work and it's really good - and you reject it purely on the basis of them not being famous enough? That's pretty stupid. It reminds me of Iger & Kennedy rejecting Colin Trevorrow's Episode 9 script and dragging back JJ cause he's more famous and has Force Awakens on his record. Nevermind that Trevorrow's ideas were way more reasonable, creative, and satisfying while JJ's ideas were way more careless. Chris Terrio is another one. JJ recruited him, saying, "He's a writer I've admired for a long time." Terrio won an oscar for Argo. But writing a good adaptation of a grounded Earth true story requires a completely different skill set than constructing the plot of a fantasy movie in an existing universe from scratch. Chris Terrio's fame couldn't save Rise of Skywalker because fame is not what makes movies good. Skill is. And fantasy franchises require different skills than other movies.
This Hollywood mentality of fame over content is detrimental when at the end of the day, content is what makes or breaks your movie. No one is born famous. Most famous people were once nobodies who broke the mold with awesome content.
Then again, James Gunn also thought the Flash was good. Honestly, I'm more concerned about the fact that Gunn is the judge here, than I am about that lady's lack of official credits.
Flash was good. CGI sucked but other than that it was a really fun and heartfelt movie.
Your comparison to Kinberg and x men doesn’t entirely work. Directing requires a ton of resources and time. If you’ve never directed before it would be exorbitantly difficult to give them a taste of what they might get. The only thing similar is that cgi test footage for Deadpool as a proof of concept, and even that requires a ton of time and resources. Writing on the other hand only requires a laptop, some WiFi, and however long you need. The script is the script. And it can be judged fairly well and will be close to the final product if no edits are needed. Entirely different from directing. Given gunns successful history writing all of guardians, the holiday special, TSS, peacemaker, and multiple other projects. I’m willing to assume he can discern if a script is to his liking and if it fits with what he wants. If this were the director I’d be inclined to agree, but with this I genuinely see no issue. Gunn was plucked from obscurity, I’m sure he’s happy enough to do the same for other up and comers if he believes they have the talent. Heck, in the article for this it mentions she was given an overall writing deal with DC. She clearly had to have wowed them. Not to mention he has literally no reason to make a decision like this lightly. If he wanted to he could pick a really established writer. I doubt he made this decision willy nilly. I’ll rest easy on this choice, even though I can understand the concern. Just seems unfounded all things considered
The history of Hollywood is filled with great movies that were written by first time screenwriters. She evidently made a good pitch and made it into something that Gunn really liked. Of course, none of that means anything if a great script is turned into an awful movie - which also has a long history.
Name one great movie written by someone with zero experience
Rocky was Sylvester Stallones first screenplay
@@DRDR3ADSALittle Miss Sunshine was the first film Michael Arndt wrote. Good Will Hunting was the first film Matt Damon and Ben Affleck wrote. Thelma and Louise was the first film Callie Khouri wrote.
She has experience writing, she’s done plays and even written screenplays that weren’t picked up. Do we freak out when someone’s first published novel comes out and say they have no experience as an author? We already know how well established writers have done for DC. Very poorly. If he’s already read the script and likes it then there’s no reason to assume it wouldn’t be fine, except to make clickbait videos ofc
This. Some debut novels have been astonishing.
And some novels from writers who have written 50 novels are utter garbage
My assumption is, they are friends, and he has read a bunch of her stuff that never got made.
Writing is not directing !
James is giving the story and she is just filling in the blanks. If it wasn’t good enough, he would have moved onto somone else.
10 Directors that I'll love to see direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow!
Greta Gerwig (she's got a good relationship with WB thanks to Barbie)
Emerald Fannell (besides directing Promising Young Woman & Saltburn, she also appeared in the Warner Bros film Barbie)
Craig Gillespie (He's good at directing Female led stories like I, Tonya & Maleficent)
Catherine Hardwicke (Director of Twiight & Thirteen)
Elizabeth Woods (Director of this independent film from 2016 call White Girl & she was also frontrunner to Director Captain Marvel)
Kitty Green (Director of The Assistant & The Royal Hotel)
Kelly Fremon Craig (Director of Edge of 17 & Are You There God? It's Me Margaret, although, I think she'd also be good for a Young Avengers film for Marvel)
Nida Manzoor (Director of the underrated flick Polite Society)
Emma Seligman (Director of Bottoms & Shiva Baby)
Leigh Janiak (Director of Netflix's Fear Street Trilogy)
I think Greta Gerwig is probably on James Gunn and WB radar after Barbie
I have a feeling the director that they bring in will bump it up a bit and do re small rewrite if it’s not all that good. For who I’d like as director I’m thinking Chloe Zhao coz I really liked what she did with the eternals as far as a group of aliens ect and the look of the eternals suits and how unique and well crafted and alien they look, the ship and alien technology stuff, she could do a really cool take on the kryptonian world and culture that is briefly shown in that comic story and then the action and visuals were very cool.
4:12 As soon as John starting cursing.. 👀 Lmao!
Supergirl is not a bad place to take risks because a lot of people don't know or even understand the character. Might be something special.
I think that James Gunn has always delivered. The idea of a reboot is change many things and that includes actors, stories, tone and also directors. If she has a good story and James Gunn is confident then I am confident too.
Kobe Bryant wrote a short film that went on to win an Oscar and then went on to be a published Author of I believe 3 books that ended up being pretty good for children targeted novels. Granted he was majorly accomplished before with basketball but regardless he won his Oscar fair and square and then became a published author. You have to start somewhere in your career here's hoping she does an amazing job with Supergirl
the general movie going audience didn't turn their backs on DC movies, they turned their backs on the DCEU and that shared universe
i mean in 2019 the joker made over 1+ billion dollars and batman 2022 with reeves & pattison made over 770+ million
I"m unsure why this is a thing? She's acted in over 30+ episodes spread across 14 different shows over a 15 year period. And she nearing 40. I'd rather they hire an actual comic book writer, which makes the most sense to me. But yeah, it's not like she's a budding film student. She's got experience working in the industry, she knows what scripts look like, because she's read thousands of them. Come on John... jesus.

Quentin Tarantino started off selling his scripts like True Romance and Natural Born Killers, Kevin Smith first script was on his budget, James Gunn sold scripts for Scooby-Doo and Dawn of the Dead before he was given a chance with Slither and even Mario Puzo never even wrote a screenplay but wrote the book for The Godfather as a reference.
Anyone who can be a great storyteller is a great storyteller. That will shine everything else can be shaped but story is important just give them a chance I trust a fresh view more than just the same.
Didn't Mario Puzo write the screenplay for Superman (1978)?
I wonder how good that Supergirl script she wrote under Hamada
Because everyone has different opinions, it doesn't matter if this movie is gonna be good or bad.
To b the devils advocate, I can understand Gun’s decision. Nowadays, being associated with a super hero movie can b a career death sentence. For a writer, director, actor, producer etc. someone who has a good name or a veteran would not take that risk. The only two people who r willing to risk it all is the up and coming, nobody or the writer who’s about to retire n doesn’t care n wants a big retirement check
My thoughts is that she may have come up with a great story conceptually. She may be hired to give the first full draft a go. We know these scripts (except recent Marvel stuff) goes through multiple iterations. It may get treatments by more experienced movie writers. Great ideas can come from anywhere or anyone. But it's true, to turn that into a great movie script takes skill and experience. Personally I'm not overly concerned just because Supergirl is not a character I care too much for. If it were Batman or Superman then I'd be more than a little concerned at this news.
Bringing in a writer who has only worked on tv shows is a huge mistake by James Gunn.
Really loved the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic. Excited to see how this turns out.
Not a lot of confidence in this
While directing a big budget movie is different from an indie one, a script is a script regardless if it’s a small drama or a superhero movie. The Kinberg comparison is not entirely accurate.
I've recently read the comic this is based on, and I'm very nervous about the budget. A movie that's closely based on that IMHO great book would be Star Wars level expensive.
If she wrote and him read. He can says If it's a great screenplay.
Took this long to fund a writer! SMH this movie is doomed.
To be fair, the story is all but written for movie with Tom King creating this story. My guess is that she’s talented and they want to lock her in. I bet she adapted it rather literally, and James will do a couple of his own drafts and get a known director. I’m not worried. That comic is incredible - writes itself

Because DC has been sucking ass for so long that we instinctively think DC needs top tier talent to right the ship.

This virtue signaling will cost Gunn a lot
What virtue signaling? I guarantee you no one at Warner brothers is strong arming him into hiring an unknown. I’m sure if it was their choice they’d try to find somebody super marketable. Gunn making a choice like this, if anything, is proof of him going for substance over run of the mill marketability. On top of that, most people don’t even pay attention to who writes what project. If he wanted to he could write it himself or hire basically anybody he chooses. He presumably liked the script, and giving his writing history with a bunch of movies and some tv, I’m willing to bet he is a decent enough judge.
I hate typos in the thumbnail 😢
its, not it’s
I don't think it's bringing a knife to a gunfight - I think it's more like Michael Corleone on the steps of the hospital with the baker (I think it was) who have their hands in their pockets, and we (the audience) are the guys pulling up, having to go 'do they have nothing, or something'? Let me be clear - I have no faith in James Gunn at this time, I was in no way a fan of his Suicide Squad movie, and his other films for me have been at best hit or miss. That said - every writer starts somewhere, and well - this one doesn't have baggage attached from any bad films or super high expectations from good ones. Not like I'm not concerned - I'm not that naive, but less though than if they hired say Rian Johnson (no faith) but more than if they hired Zack Snyder, and to be clear - I hated most of the Snyderverse, I will rip in to MoS, BvS, and prefer the Whedon cut of JL cause it's mercifully short and fixes some truly dumb decisions Snyder made but is still terrible, however - I think he could do a good Supergirl movie cause most of what he did with Superman and how he acted and all in some cases, is actually more in line with certain versions of Supergirl that I actually like, especially playing against a properly done Superman. Though I'd still want someone over Snyder to reign him in.
My concern however, looking up a couple quick things about the story that apparently inspired this film, is that once again - were jumping in to the deep end way too fast. The synopsis's I found read like something that is not the first movie you make with the character, or really, characters if you include Krypto and all, maybe second, much better as third+. Like, establish her as Supergirl, give the basics of here back story and show some of the effect it's taken on her losing her family, friends, culture, etc, but save something that is not only a bit more of a 'what is my purpose now while living in my cousins shadow story, that not only goes deeper in to some of what she's dealing with but more importantly, seems to be written not as a Supergirl story, but another characters story featuring Supergirl for a later film. I feel like their about to make the same mistake they basically made with the Snyderverse jumping in to something well established from the start, instead of building from the ground up.
Supergirl greatness
I'm more suprised there will be a Supergirl movie before we had some time with just Superman. This will be way to soon, if she starts writing it now...
9:22 it’s also possible there was more than one script adapting this, from other more established writers and this one was the best in Gunn’s mind.

Im curious to know what confidence level this writer has in trying to translate their thoughts and ideas onto a big project with no experience
James Gunn’s. I think we can at least agree he knows his way around a movie script.
Maybe they pay her less 😮
Even as a huge fan of Zack's DC movies especially Man of Steel I'm ready to move on and hope the DCU is received better than the DCEU. Now while I have my reservations for James Gunn directing a Superman movie if it wasn't for Rob's insights that she may have doctored some scripts and written good scripts for movies that just didn't get made I'd also be worried about the Supergirl director because like Campea said giving a huge movie like this to a inexperienced writer.

Is he supposed to bad mouth and trash them to make his new projects look better? You can’t anger the remnant fans of the DCEU like that.
It was a COVID release released to HBO the same day it went to limited theaters.
As flops go, it was expected. Box office wasn’t great. But it got great numbers and reviews from people who watched at home. Gave us, “Peacemaker” and got Gunn the top job.
@@mpadilla707black widow was released on disney+ as well as theaters and it did much better at the bo.
At this point, I'm more concerned by Tom King's story than I am about Ana Nogueira's screenplay. Ana might be a good/great writer. But I already know that Tom King is a horrible writer. A writer having more credits to their name isn't always a good thing. While it concerns me that James Gunn has chosen to base his Supergirl movie on Tom King's story, I do trust James and I'm hoping that James and Ana can improve King's story. The story itself isn't necessarily bad. King's execution is bad.
Woman of Tomorrow is great
Really? A Supergirl movie now? I’m not saying I think that a Supergirl movie can’t be good, it totally can be, but much like with characters like Robin or Miles Morales they seem like characters you’d wanna introduce *AFTER* the og character has been around for a good amount of time, that’s why I keep saying that the MCU shouldn’t introduce Miles Morales yet, because Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is still relatively young, as of right now he’s still a high school student, and for Miles Morales to work you need Peter Parker to be a seasoned adult, and with Supergirl I think that we need to have at least 5 or 6 years with David Corenswet’s Superman before bringing in a character like Supergirl, same goes for Robin in the DCU’s Batman franchise, and so while I think it could work as a movie I just feel like they’re looking at doing Supergirl a little too early
It's not a bad idea to introduce her because it's going to allow people to Krypton instead of in a flashback, box office may end up bringing more ladies to DC movies too..may even see some green lanterns too
🤦 why do people keep saying this. Dude its a universe, you dont need 3 + movies to introduce Supergirl. Its not like robin where hes legacy character. Shes her own hero. Also this Superman isn't has been doing it for awhile and justice league already exist in this universe.
I'm looking forward to WB canning this film after it's finished but not released.
