Nice video.. I'm about to buy a 2021 Honda Passport with this transmission. I have always done my own wrenching (unless its for warranty work). I note the Honda has this ridiculously complicated procedure for setting the fluid level. Is there any reason simply draining out what you can into a graduated cylinder and then putting exactly the same quantity of fluid (at the same temperature) back in at around 40 to 50k miles? I mean the dealer doesn't need to know right?..:)
very nice video. I bought a used 2015 cherokee 4.2L and the ZF 9 transmission runs fine ovreall. I would not however not buy another cherokee because of the agreement between ZF and Chrysler and how it is a pain to service as you showed.
I like the way this transmission's performance, except for the hash low-mid speed shift when your coming off/lightening up on the gas. The lack of serviceability is unfortunate.
I agree, mostly the newer cars with this trans, im not seeing any problems at all. Thanks for watching, please give vid a thumbs up. Hopefully you will subscribe, thanks
Thank you, I have Land Rover Discovery sport and it has the same transmission. Some folks out there are posting videos of them changing the fluid every 50k or even every year. After watching this, I don't see a reason to replace the fluid that often. And I definitely don't see a reason to change the filter.
Very informative video. I have on of these transmissions in the Acura TLX 3.5 (2016), recently we have been getting hard shifts and chirping between shifts. Turns out the Oil Cooler on the transmission has gone bad and contaminated the engine coolant also. Do you have any information that can help with finding a new transmission filter?
Hey bud, thanks for watching. The only way ive been able to get a filter for this unit was I had to order in. Took 2 weeks. Because they do not expect many people to replace them, they prolly didnt make many
Really helpful thanks! I have a Jeep Cherokee and was debating if I should replace the fluid or not. There is no reason why it would have been contaminated so I'll leave it as it is.

Just bought a 2021 cherokee with this 9 speed zf trans. In a nut shell, do you recommend i do a fluid drain and fill throughout the life of the car? Or are there just too many questionable symptoms that could arise from doing this? This is the wife's car, i cant be the reason why it breaks lol.
Hello my friend. The problem with doing this is you stand a chance of voiding your warranty. These transmissions are considered filled for life. Meaning there is no change interval basically until warranty expire (100K). So im not sure it would be wise to do that. Besides, if you have any trans problem, just take to the dealer to get fixed. It wwould likely be flash updates anyway. Thanks for watching, please thumbs up the video and subscribe to the channel, thanks
The proper way to perform a transmission service which includes replacing the transmission filter. Here's what that job look like.: ua-cam.com/video/suDFRqmxQhY/v-deo.html
So is this the exact same ZF9 that’s in the Honda pilot in the Acura? Because they have a 60K drain and fill in the manual. Is that because their ATF is inferior to Chryslers? And can I use a Maxlife?
Hello my friend. The ZF transmission not a bad trans..tgey just hard to service the traditional way..Theres no need to steer clear of any car that uses this ttansmission imo
Thats why I've always said. The term/word flush is misleading. At best you only draining/pulling all the old fluid out and going back in with new fluid..that my friend, is not a flush. And you not going to drain/pull debri out of a transmission doing that.
I'm thinking of purchasing a Jeep Renegade, and found myself having to choose between the 6 speed manual and the 9 speed auto, I'd already heard the auto had issues, but if this is the level of labour just to change the fluid and filter, there's no way I'm touching the auto. Shame though, because the Trailhawk only comes in auto. So that version is out.
I have a 2015 trailhawk. Paid off this month thank god but if you haven’t bought anything already don’t buy this car. Check out a two door wrangler instead. It might be a bit easier to maintain yourself for most stuff and fluids and the wrangler two door is small like the renegade. That’s what I probably should have gotten instead. Back then they had the JK model. The current JL looks better.

Eye opener. Thanks bro. What a perverted way of thinking those designers have! I was considering 2022 Pathfinder for every reviewer on Utube praised Nissan for finally moving away from cvt. I was also considering Telluride. Which would you recommend from reliability point of view 2022 Pathfinder or Telluride? Thank You.
Kia is notorious for using the dual dry clutch setup. If you ever plan on using the vehicle for adventuring off road or crossing some ravines, some small obstacles, it won't be the vehicle for you. Dual clutches are reliable but they are not great for off road obstacles.
Hey bud, it could mean a number of things. I would say this, the TCM on this trans very good with setting fault codes related to trans problems. So i would def get the trans scanned

If this transmission was designed this way while most Americans drive their vehicles until the wheels fall off. So from the perspective Of most people a transmission that isn’t designed to last is a bad design. For others it’s engineering prowess makes up for its opec record or reliability. I’m thankful for the vid but let’s call a spade and damn spade. Yes the transmission has 9 gears and all this efficiency, most people believe if it’s built to break or have a limited life, THATS A BAD DESIGN from a consumers perspective whose going to spend their hard earned money fixing this crap. The good news is that its a fairly reliable transmission. If software up to date, the trans could hang around for lots of miles. Thanks for watching bud. Please thumbs up the video, thanks
In there defense, there was no other place to put it because of the design. A filter has to be in line fluid route to the pump..I guess the end result was with this design, you get 9 speeds and lowered emission..
It could always be worse. You could have a Nissan with a CVT (and ironically, the new 2022 Nissan Pathfinder is ditching the CVT in favor of the ZF 9-speed). Nissan rates the Pathfinder with a CVT for towing up to 6,000 pounds, but given it's poor reputation, I wouldn't trust it over the long haul.
