  • Enjoy fishing the shad run in sunny Florida. These hard fighting and acrobatic fish provide great entertainment. This video covers locations on where to hook up with both American and Hickory shad along with tips on how to catch them from personal experience and even better ideas I have learned from friends. An added bonus to this video is the beautiful backdrop of the St. Johns and Econ Rivers.

This was a great video. I am an angler from Nova Scotia and I fish shad here in Nova Scotia. I had no idea the shad migrated so far. Very interesting!

Do you eat these fish or just fish for them for fun?

Thanks for watching and your question. I do not eat shad. They have a lot of bones in them. Some people like them smoked and others will eat their roe. Unfortunately the shad in the St. Johns river don't spawn more than once in their lifetime because after the long trip south they die after they spawn. So for me I release the shad so they can reproduce. In the same area that I catch shad I also catch specks, pan fish and hybrids so if I need a fish to eat I will keep one of those.

To my knowledge the American and Hickory shad are only in large quantities in the St. Johns river in Florida so catching them in other waterways would not be that common. You do have silver and gold shad in your area but they are a lot smaller than the American and Hickory. If I was fishing for catfish I would use anything that stinks for bait. You could buy some large shiners locally to use for bait instead of shad. You can also bait them up and use a cast net to catch them. If you use a cast net you need to leave it on shore when you begin to fish according to Florida regulations. Another secret for catfish bait is to pickle or brine them. Here is a video on the topic, ua-cam.com/video/LSln0thS0q4/v-deo.html . Chicken livers and necks are cheap and also good catfish baits. Good luck with your fishing and thanks for watching!

@@VikingExpeditions Thanks for replying. I'm fishing the Ocklawaha River it connects to the St Johns. My son and I fish at Rodman dam in Palatka. The start of the Ocklawaha. Does Florida have fresh water skipjack. Heck I just found out Florida has Pike! Some guy caught 3 of them at Rodman dam. Thanks. 👍

@@maces1405 Florida does have skipjack shad also know as golden shad. They are mostly found in rivers connected to the Gulf of Mexico. I don't do a lot of fishing for freshwater catfish. When I have caught them it has been while using artificial baits when I was fishing for bass or crappie (see video on my channel called Crappie Fishing on Lake Disston). My friends that are successful fishing for catfish vote for chicken livers first and then some sort of smelly bait like cut dead shiners (some brine theirs others don't) or even worms. Here is an article from Florida Sportsman on fishing for Catfish in Florida that you might find useful www.floridasportsman.com/2015/11/03/florida-catfishing/ . You probably have seen it but there is a nice campground near to the dam (I like site 55 the best) if you want to spend a couple of days in the area. Thanks again for your questions.

@@VikingExpeditions Thanks so much John. You answered the question that I have been searching for Skipjack are golden shad! I knew skipjack was slang, but I didn't know for what. I'm going after big blue catfish over 20 pounds. Now I know the name of the bait species "golden shad" I can learn how to target them. Thanks again! 👍
