  • Englewood Beach has a relaxed old Florida feel with great fishing. On this trip we target and give tips on how to catch inshore species like snook, red fish, and mangrove snapper.

    Good one John. Wish I could have been there. I haven’t forgotten the cane pole but I've been swamped with getting ready to move. See you soon.

    Hi John, I really like your videos. They are realistic and entertaining to watch. I like the way you describe what you are doing and the tackle that you are using. I kayak fish the fresh water lakes around me in South Jersey and salt water fish in Ocean City, NJ. Take care, Mickey

    Nice video! We've stayed at Wanna B before, very nice resort. We'll be down there next April and I'm bringing either the CC or kayaks this time. Thanks for sharing!

    Cool video, my parents spend all winter in Englewood. What type of boat are you using?

    • @VikingExpeditions

      The boat I am using on this trip is a Gheenoe LT25. The LT25 is 16 feet long and 56 inches wide at its widest spot. This type of boat is good for fishing/exploring in protected shallow water. Thanks for watching and for your question.

    Hey John, I know this is an older video, but where did you launch the Gheenoe when fishing the Engelwood area? Hope you see this. Thanks

      We stayed at the Wanna B Inn and they had a boat ramp. From memory I believe there was a public ramp about 2 miles north of there, if you can't find it on Google maps let me know. Even after the red tide that area holds a lot of fish. Good Luck!

    Hey! Im here 2 years later on canal by skips marina. Only catching catfish on frozen shrimp. Can you give me a close up of your lure? Im new to fishing in general. Tx

      Look at this video at the 2:07 minute mark for a close up of the lures that I use 80% of the time ua-cam.com/video/pdIw87sPKZg/v-deo.html . The best jig that I have the most luck with catching fish in Florida is the pearl white 3 inch body Z Man Diesel Minnow on a 1/8 or 1/4 oz chartreuse Strike King jig head. I will also put some Procure Shrimp scent on the plastic body near the head. In water less than 3 feet I use the 1/8 oz jig head. In water over 3 feet I use the 1/4 oz jig head. The retrieve you use is important too. In my experience all fish except tarpon will strike best with a jerk-jerk-pause retrieve that imitates a shrimp. Tarpon like a swimming action that imitates what a mullet does as talked about in this video ua-cam.com/video/BI6W-o-BIq4/v-deo.html . Depending on the temperature vary the speed of your retrieve, hot weather move your bait fast in cold weather move the bait slow. In cold weather you can also use smaller baits to get more strikes. This is due to fish not needing as big of meals in cold water plus other factors. When it gets cold I will use a Z Man 2 1/2 inch pearl white Slimswim bait on a 1/10 oz black or red jig head. From my experience local tackle stores do not carry the Slimswim baits and you will have to order them online. Fishing with frozen shrimp is not the best choice for inshore fishing. If you are going to use natural bait I would suggest live shrimp fished from a popping cork. Pop the cork once every minute to draw attention to your bait. Whether you go with artificial or natural baits don't use a lot of hardware on the end of your line. I would suggest just tying a 3 foot section of clear 15 lb monofilament to your line and then the end of that too your jig or hook. If you need to use natural bait use split shot weights that are at least 12 to 18" from your hook. If you are fishing for snook you will have to up your leader test to at least 30 lb to allow for abrasion from a snook's gills. Good luck and thanks for your question.

    How much grass did you see? Heard its kinda bare since red tide.

    • @VikingExpeditions
      @VikingExpeditions  5 років тому

      It depended on the location if I saw grass or not. I don't fish this area enough to know what is normal so I can[t make an educated comment. I do fish the Pine Island and Estero Bay areas enough to say the grass in those areas have been impacted tremendously. I am not a scientist so take this for what it is worth, I believe the grass in these areas have been affected more by the fresh water discharges from Lake Okeechobee than say red tide or blue-green algae. Fish populations have been effected but if you fish structure and moving water there are still plenty to catch. Just avoid SW Florida when they are discharging water from Lake Okeechobee and after for 2 weeks. The discharge turns off fishing in the area and makes the water a brownish color that impacts places like Ft. Myers Beach, Sanibel and Pine Island Sound.

    Do you still have your PortaBote?

    • @VikingExpeditions
      @VikingExpeditions  5 років тому +1

      Yes I still have my Porta-Bote. I mostly use it when I am camping and pulling my camper and can't bring a boat on a trailer. I've logged a lot of hours with it and the only complaint I have is that it is hard to open when it is colder than 32 F out. This is a easy problem to fix being I should not be fishing if it is that cold. This Spring I will be taking it to the Keys for bone fish and tarpon and later this year up to the Boundary waters of Minnesota. Also just purchased a trolling motor and a downrigger to test out on it too. Thanks for watching!
