Hey guys, thank you for the great videos. I ordered a truck 3 months ago and picked it up today. My original salesman was fair and we agreed to a price just over invoice. Today, I used your advice to see the invoice, which my new salesman was reluctant to provide, but did so after I insisted. We confirmed the OTD price minus factory incentives, and secured financing at a better rate than what my bank quoted me. I resisted the suggestion for Gap and ESP as I did my homework and found a better ESP for almost half what the dealer wanted. In the end I am very happy with my deal and, for the first time didn’t feel like I was swindled. None of this would have been possible without great content from you both. Thank you.

The information provided in this video is one of the strongest presentations/argument of the detriment the auto dealership model has become and how the manufacturer can sell more vehicles, have more happy customers, reduce cost and waste, and have more accurate earnings and projections to ensure their viability.

Chasing a Ford Maverick. For the price point it is a great commuter option for me. Ford's website showed the dealer with inventory at 27,440. So I messaged the dealer. Their response "The price with the market adjustment is $42,440.00." Laughable. But even more so now that I am armed with the confidence and wisdom your channel has brought me. Keep up the excellent work.
My Dad ordered a new Buick back in the 90's. They agreed on a selling price. Then the dealer came back and said that the cost of the car had gone up $500.00. The dealer would not come down on the $500.00. So my dad called Buick up directly and got a $500.00 voucher to cover the price increase. So there can be options out there if the dealer won't work with you.
In 2012 I ordered a Buick LaCrosse that was supposed to come in within about 3 weeks. I put down a deposit and charged it to my GM Credit Card. Several months later after a complete run around by the dealership I called Buick and they would not help me at all as they said the franchise dealer was a completely separate business. Turns out the dealer was in financial trouble and could not even order cars - I had effectively given them a short term loan. At every visit to the dealership someone new lied to me and tried to say they could get me an update in just a few more days. Thank god I put the deposit on a credit card. I'll never do a custom order that requires a deposit again.
Or just don't take delivery. Odds are you ordered a car because you didn't want a stock combination of options, and if they are willing to tank the sale over $500, good luck to them selling it.
This vid literally save me thousands! I saw this 2 weeks after I ordered a jeep. I ended up going back and negotiating with other dealers with the understanding I may lose my deposit in the process. Ended up talking the origional dealer down to invoice price plus 2k in rebates. Thank you soo much!
I was genuinely curious about it since I am planning to factory order a F-250 one day and I stumbled on this video. Excellent content, thanks for the tips, definitely learned a lot from this. Also, love your relationship with your father, that’s what I look up to be with my son.
Excellent review! I factory ordered a 2020 F150 in July 2020 and had to put down a $500 deposit. I was able to negotiate a factory spray in bed liner and a bug deflector at no cost in order to close the deal. Since the truck arrived in Sept 2020 I received additional incentives that Ford offered at the time the truck arrived. I was glad that I custom ordered the truck because I was able to get the color I wanted along with the options I wanted, instead of a lot of unnecessary options that the trucks on the dealer's lot had.
Wow, this brings back memories of when i negotiated a factory order audi for my wife. Just like they said we got it down to invoice and it took three months and we didnt have to pay for options we didnt want!
The process was very simple when I ordered my Audi while living in Germany. No dealership to deal with simply because i ordered directly from the manufacturer. The cost saving was mind boggling. 1k deposit and the build was complete in 10 weeks. Audi called and told me what day and time that my car would be rolling off of the assembly line for delivery. Was given a tour of the facility on the build completion date and watched my car roll out of the assembly line. Saved almost 10k vs what the dealership was selling them for.
I'm saving this info ! I will be factory ordering the new '22 Nissan Frontier SV CC/LB 4X4 with all the bells & whistles as my retirement truck in a few months. Knowledge is power! Great info.
@@kevinkirk3156 Hey Kevin, I'm about to do a build out on a '21 Canyon and order it through the dealer. Did you order from the factory? When you say that you "saved ~7 grand" was that off of sticker or invoice?
Kevin Kirk, we just ordered GMC3500 on 7/09 we have our sale order the dealer sent in; once it arrives can/will dealer try to add on to the price from the sales contract written up? We obviously won’t get our loan going until a week before it arrives and doing outside financing on our own. Just don’t want surprises ?
I can't believe how much I've learned... Thank you both, I'm looking into buying a factory car myself and the youtube algorithm brought me here! THUMBS UP! 👍🏻
This is the video I've been waiting for! Thanks! Some clarifications: 1. Wouldn't a discussion on financing or trade-in only happen AFTER agreement on an OTD price? 2. When does the conversation with F&I take place -- when ordering or upon delivery? 3. How can I obtain insight into the local dealer's FPA, AA, and holdback? Perhaps ask to see an invoice from an on-the-lot vehicle? 4. Some manufacturers have websites allowing you to spec out a vehicle and forward the results to a dealer so they can act on it. Any drawbacks with that approach?
1.) yes 2.) delivery 3.) For specific dealer, ask them. otherwise to get a general idea reference the link I posted 4.) Yeah, most dealers I find can't match that specifically. They search for similar ones coming into the region and try to steal them away for you. Toyota, for instance, says they can put in a factory preference order with your selections, but many that I talk to pretend like it's not possible or they are unwilling to do it, so good luck with that. So basically, build a car is a lie for most manufactures selling in NA. Hope this helps! I gained all the knowledge from zach and ray's other videos and livestreams.
It’s 2021 and I still can’t believe that we still have dealerships 🤦♂️ Should be able to order them directly to your home. Dealer mark ups KILL so many deals especially in these current times. And dealer orders are usually very convoluted and with stupid option combinations that people wouldn’t get otherwise. Which is a waste of resources that could go into making a vehicle EXACTLY the way a customer wants
My understanding is the dealers in England only have a few vehicles on their lot. You test the one on the lot, then you discuss prices and order the vehicle. The new vehicle shows up and you finish the paperwork then drive away.
Wow! I watched this video just in time. I am literally in the process of doing a factory order. Thank you so much for the informative videos you produce.

You finally covered Factory Order cars. This summer Im ordering a 2021 BMW G82 M4. Your how to steps ........on how to order the car will be helpful. MSRP 74,000. After options I’m guessing 100,000. After taxes license registration 110,000. Then I subtract your ideas from today’s video...total price , I’m guessing 100,000.
I ordered a Ford Transit and didn't negotiate the price (oops, didnt know I could on a factory order), although I did catch them trying to slip in the 'market adjustment fee' of $2k and told them I wouldn't be paying that. You guys saved me $2k right there, thank you! Now that I have already ordered and put my deposit down yesterday, I'm going to negotiate the floorplan assistance fee and try to get closer to invoice. Any advice?
Im in Canada. I ordered a dodge challenger scat pack wide body on Dec 4 2020....i have been told I should have my car the first week of April!! 2022!!! American orders get filled first. They kept using Covid as an excuse yet guys in Texas were still getting the same car within months. I am 5 hours away from the plant that they are made. I will believe it when i am in the drivers seat.
I have always ordered my new vehicles and have never in 59 years bought off the lot and i buy new every 3-4 years. I can honestly say that i have never bought a vehicle that i had trouble with and most were trouble free, in other words i never took them back to the dealer for and warranty work. I know for a fact that a customer sold order is assembled with more care than a dealer inventory order.
I ordered and took delivery of a Chevy Blazer RS last year. First, the sales manager made it obvious he didn't want to order a car but to sell me his inventory. He kept talking about financing and "$ per month. Finally we ordered what I wanted. He wouldn't budge off MRSP and only charged me $100 deposit. It was like clockwork and the car arrived as promised, 2 1/2 months. I then negotiated my final selling price but they insisted on the $300 dealer prep.
Audi dealer insisted no deposit necessary for my order. Should I insist making some deposit to ensure the vehicle is mine? Dealer offered and I accepted 11% off MSRP plus incentives available at delivery.
So I need to have a car loan approval before or at the time that the car arrives? Because my understand is that car loans expire 30 days if not used/funded
Great video. I'm finding the Jeep folks don't want to provide information on how to order and what the process is. Blows my mind why they're so secretive.
Hi my daughter ordered a 2021 80th Edition Jeep Wrangler waited eight weeks. Had a agreed price and deposit on it. It came in and the dealer sold it to someone else. Told her that the vehicle was in an accident after coming off the assembly line and it won't be coming and it's too late to order to order another one. He said I could sell you something on the lot if you want. No thanks I ordered and built the Jeep for a reason. Nobody had what I wanted. What is your opinion on that deal. I think the dealer is a real scumbag. Thank you for your time and your videos deeply appreciated. Bob
Work at Ford dealership. Dealer stock is being marked up 2-5k depending on the car, we are pushing a lot of factory order which we do sell for MSRP maybe 1k dealer discount.
Last week I went to some cars dealership. I can't believe what my eyes see! Aside from the add-ons. There's another ADD MARKET VALUE starting from $5K to $9K depending on what dealership you go to. I saw the sticker price for MSRP $30K. The addition of ADD ONS and ADD MARKET VALUE, cause they say "CHIPS SHORTAGES" it will cost me $41K, OMG! That's PISSED ME OFF! Who the hell would pay extra $5K to $9K just because the dealers said ADD MARKET VALUE! It's a RIP OFFS I should never pay. What I did...… I went to a car dealership that helped me to purchase/order it directly from the MANUFACTURER.. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! YAA, your the best!!!!!!!
The first time I negotiated for a car the salesman told me I hadn't allowed for advertising cost. I countered with not allowing for the holdback, which is roughly equal, so let's call those even and go back to talking about now much over invoice I'm willing to pay.
@@cecho9367 I built this truck with just what I needed. MSRP 39,420 Minus 1,000 XLT MID discount = $38,420. The invoice price is $36,222 Rebates and incentives that are available at delivery will be applied. Right now that’s about $2,000
Thanks for discussing the Floorplan Assistance! That will help when my new 2500HD that I ordered, comes in! Cost savings and getting the exact packages was the reason I ordered a new pickup... plus lack of availability, and savings a few hundred dollars when it is delivered will be a bonus. 👍

Well it depends on whether or not the dealership owns it’s own inventory or if they use a large banking source to which they just pay a monthly premium for each unit that sits in the lot from month to month. The pricing structure between the two are hugely different.
Just ask the dealer, they use it as a selling point when you take them to it. Dealer: “This is as low as we can go, its invoice” Me: “The Holdback/floor plan assistance from manufacturer will suffice if you want this sale..” Dealer: “Sign here, how much you putting down again?” Me: “Zero dollars down and I’m qualified for the 0.00% financing.. thank you but can we hurry this up, I’m busy” 😂
Facts I had waited 9 months for my last V8 C63s told lies left & right about when it would come but then again it was right in the middle of the pandemic April 2020 so I knew what I was signing up for. But I didn’t pay a dime over msrp after all fees & taxes & my car loan so it was a win for me ! Check out my review video on how I did it
@@cexy63s yeah the Pandemic really slowed up a lot of production. It's with everything from PS5's to furniture. I just ordered a 2021 challenger rt through Dodge and Chrysler two weeks ago. Hopefully everything goes good, but I can also wait, so that I can save money until I start making car payments.
The simplest way is to go to the manufacture's website and build your own, print the build sheet and take it to the dealership. Put down your deposit and you're done. If that dealer is marking up over MSRP, find another dealer.
I recall how my grandfather and uncles would order their new cars every couple of years and they would have never thought of just buying one off of the lot. I really thought that the practice was dead but had no idea why it would be other than the dealers and manufacturers did not want to be bothered with a single order.
I always shop three dealerships with the same vehicle spec. On my recent Ford purchase, all three dealerships told me I got either the rebates at time of order, or time of delivery, whichever is better. My usual dealership never asks for a deposit when I order. There is no discussion of add-on accessories and they don't happen. They show me MSRP, invoice, and all the plan prices right up front. I ask them how they are figuring the deal and they tell me most of the information, like the incentive they get for selling X-plan, what the actual cash value is for my trade, what they will put it on the lot for, etc. I don't ask them about holdback or other factory to dealer incentives but I realize that, along with profit on my trade, is their incentive to sell. Yes, they make pretty good money on my deals for the amount of time we spend together.
Thank you for this video! I just factory ordered a Ford Maverick last week! I'm a week late in watching your video. I guess there's no more room for me to negotiate. Nonetheless, keep your videos coming, and more power to your channel!
I factory ordered through a dealership and hope that it goes according to plan. They required no down payment saying that they could just sell it if I decided not to keep it which totally made sense to me I'm sure all will go well I'm paying the MSRP is what I expect I don't expect any deals or anything just as is.
@@Dandelion333F I apologize for the late reply. I ended up having to get another bronco from a dealer a few hours away. with your humor alone you will definitely still be around in 2030 and beyond! i just love the energy, you made me laugh not even one minute in and that was an instant subscribe,
I recently did a factory order. I got told multiple times that there was no invoice for the car until a certain stage in the manufacturing process, then they will send it to me. All I signed was a build sheet that said at the bottom. "This is not an invoice, all prices and something something are subject to change." I was very nervous going thru with it but I trusted the guy that he said they would be no mark ups or suprise fees. I got "OTD" price which was taxes, doc fee, and title, and lien. Hoping that sounds right and when it comes in its exactly what I signed it would be.
I know this is an older video, but I have a few questions. If dealers have a set number of special orders, is that number set by month or quarter. And depending, are they more willing to work on special orders at the end of that period?
I ordered a 21 Jeep Gladiator, took about 8 weeks from order to delivery. Little to no communication from dealer. Dealer initially told me horror stories of them not making the car I wanted, having to wait 6 months, wanted me to pay them $5k for the privilege, whole bunch of nonsense. Dick Hannah Jeep of Vancouver. Their motto is "Believe in Nice" but really should be Believe in Dicks
@@miltonpugh4318 I rejected the $5k privilege, and they gave up on pushing it rather fast. I'm happy with the order, but it was hard to tell if got me what I ordered. You have to translate your online build summary into line item options with the dealer which are not user friendly. I have 23B - Customer Preferred Package, but I didn't order any option so not sure what it is. One of my options is 4EA - Sold Vehicle. Not sure what half of them mean. I was happy the truck came fast, I'd only do it if the dealer models are significantly over priced or optioned from what you want, but not really a satisfying process.

Excellent information, guys. Keep up the great work! I have a question: When does the credit check hit in a factory order scenario? I am buying a house, and I also want to order a vehicle, but I don't want the new vehicle credit check to impact my mortgage application.
Buy the house first. Any debt you have when you purchase your home can effect your loan application. And yes it will show up on your credit report if someone else runs your credit
You guys are the best! I do have a question for both of you. Now that there is such a shortage of cars translating to low numbers of vehicles to dealerships and even fewer vehicles actually on the lot, are manufacturers reducing or eliminating "floor plan assistance" to dealerships?
Incentives are usually stock driven, from my understanding. That is to say, if there's not an excess of inventory, what's the incentive to whore them out? Seems like it's the opposite.
My next vehicle will be factory ordered and custom built. Platunim trim and sparkling brand new, with additional bells, whistles, and sugar 🤣 (not without negotiation of course 👍)
Great video. Is there any way to find out what the holdback, advertising assistance, and floor plan assistance is is for a particular make and model of vehicle? Or would the dealer normally just say OK to selling it at invoice as stated in the video?
You guys are AWESOME!!!!!!!! HELPED SO MUCH! Right now... I want to order a Chevy Tahoe RST.. One dealer says, no problem.. SUV will be ready in 8 to 12 weeks from ordering... another dealer says OH it takes 4 months... another dealer... OH, it can take 8 Months???? Who is telling the truth?????
Where does a down payment on a factory built vehicle come into play? Can you use that while negotiating the price. For example the vehicle you are having built comes out to like $40,000 and you have a down payment of $20,000. Will a dealer be a lot more open to negotiate a price when you have the vehicle factory built?
No, the down payment is only crucial to when you're applying for the loan. By putting down half the purchase price you will greatly increase your loan offers and better competitive financing rates. That big down payment covers the depreciation and the lender is protected. If you have a trade in, don't mention it till you finish negotiating the deal because you don't want the dealer to adjust the price beforehand because of your trade.
Great informational video! I used to be very savvy back in the day once the internet lifted the curtain. This new information is going to make my life better/easier! I'll order my car going forward. Save money and lose nothing.
2 Q: 1. does the dealer pull credit at order or delivery 2. Is there a delay clause for the deposit if it gets stuck in assembly and is delayed over the time alloted ?
My dad factory ordered a 1976 Mustang Mach 1 bicentennial model which would have been the car I drove in high school. By the time it was delivered demand had pushed the price that the dealer could get for it up and the dealer sold it out from under him without even giving him a chance to meet the higher price. I ended up having to drive a Mercury Marquis. We never went back to that dealer.
Not related to the topic of this video, but I learned a lot from this channel and was able to negotiate good deal on a car last fall. Thanks for making great content and sharing your insider knowledge!
With the inventory shortages ordering a car seems to be the only way to get what you want but I'm also not seeing people are paying less than MSRP for many cars and not many manufacturers incentives outside of finance
Thanks! I’m planning on factory ordering a 2022 Dodge Charger. Scat Pack. This was helpful. Do I negotiate those additional fees too that dealers overcharge when I negotiate the price?
You can try but it’s all on the dealer on how much they want to stick you, I ordered a 2020 scat pack and I was able to get it for about 10% under msrp but then I ended up having to pay everything else on it. But my challenger I got the sales tax and all the fees were covered by the dealer
Just back from the dealership where they were taking my order, and when I asked for the out-the-door price, they gave me the MSRP. I said that I need a better price, and, when he said that they only do sticker on factory orders, I thanked him for his time and walked out. There are at least 25 Toyota dealerships within 50 miles of here.
Chrysler does something called price protection for most insentives so you have either the current ones or the ones when the car comes in witch ever is higher. Their is no reason for the dealer to hold back as insentives are money from the manufacturer and don't cost the dealership anything
12 weeks special ordering a car from Audi is nothing. I ordered a Audi S5 in Feb. 2008 & took delivery right before Thanksgiving 20008...10 months. What was to be a 2008 model became a 2009. At order time that model had just been released + I had the car painted an Audi color although that color was not available on that model at the time. Still have the car & love it!
If I understand correctly, when you order a car, you are not tied to getting a “package” if you want or don’t want an item that is normally part of a package?
No vehicles can only be ordered the way a manufacturer allows it does allow you to order options and packages that your local dealer may not have in stock
A few years ago the local Toyota dealerships told me they don't special order for customers. I contacted Toyota corporate and they confirmed it. Also, if/when you find a dealer/mfr that will special order you lose a significant negotiating tool, especially for popular cars. Dealers love it when you say that you want a green car instead of saying you don't care what color it is.
I ordered a Mustang in 2016. Best way to get a car! 10 week wait...and yes, you do lose negotiating power with a custom order. Sometimes, it's the only way to get what you want. Recommend using the Costco auto program 👌
We’ve ordered four Fords and have had “price protection” where we could take whichever discount was higher (order date or delivery date.) It was at a few different dealers so I assume that is standard practice with Ford? My latest was a Mustang. Turnaround time was about 8 weeks and required a $500 deposit.
And at this time(when factory order comes in) can the dealer try to add $ in or are u good with the sales order amount they sent in? Just ordered 7/9 and have my amount just don’t want any surprises . First time we’ve ever order from factory .

I'll never do a custom order that requires a deposit again.
Or just don't take delivery.
Odds are you ordered a car because you didn't want a stock combination of options, and if they are willing to tank the sale over $500, good luck to them selling it.
That is not right how could dealership justify that added $500

Just like they said we got it down to invoice and it took three months and we didnt have to pay for options we didnt want!
how much lower than MSRP was invoice?
The process was very simple when I ordered my Audi while living in Germany. No dealership to deal with simply because i ordered directly from the manufacturer. The cost saving was mind boggling. 1k deposit and the build was complete in 10 weeks. Audi called and told me what day and time that my car would be rolling off of the assembly line for delivery. Was given a tour of the facility on the build completion date and watched my car roll out of the assembly line. Saved almost 10k vs what the dealership was selling them for.

Kevin Kirk, we just ordered GMC3500 on 7/09 we have our sale order the dealer sent in; once it arrives can/will dealer try to add on to the price from the sales contract written up?
We obviously won’t get our loan going until a week before it arrives and doing outside financing on our own.

Some clarifications:
Very good questions. Can't wait to read the answers.
Great questions. Looking forward to hearing their response.
@@Rodrigo_xt8c2 thank you very much for the link.
I hope you get a reply on these great questions.
It’s 2021 and I still can’t believe that we still have dealerships 🤦♂️
Should be able to order them directly to your home. Dealer mark ups KILL so many deals especially in these current times. And dealer orders are usually very convoluted and with stupid option combinations that people wouldn’t get otherwise. Which is a waste of resources that could go into making a vehicle EXACTLY the way a customer wants
If you want to deal with manufacturer defects, go ahead 🤣
Dealer markups?? Its the manufacturer mark up. Unless you have a dealership charging you over sticker
My understanding is the dealers in England only have a few vehicles on their lot. You test the one on the lot, then you discuss prices and order the vehicle. The new vehicle shows up and you finish the paperwork then drive away.

The dealers here are putting huge markups on new cars. This was so helpful thanks guys.

Please make a video on what those invoice prices are.... Everybody would love to know what the dealers pay for cars
Dealer: “This is as low as we can go, its invoice”
Me: “The Holdback/floor plan assistance from manufacturer will suffice if you want this sale..”
Dealer: “Sign here, how much you putting down again?”
Me: “Zero dollars down and I’m qualified for the 0.00% financing.. thank you but can we hurry this up, I’m busy”

The simplest way is to go to the manufacture's website and build your own, print the build sheet and take it to the dealership. Put down your deposit and you're done. If that dealer is marking up over MSRP, find another dealer.
You will pay thousands more for that simplictiy. You should be paying well under msrp.
I recall how my grandfather and uncles would order their new cars every couple of years and they would have never thought of just buying one off of the lot. I’m factory ordering a Mazda 3 turbo hatch on Tuesday, my birthday! 🎉🎉🎉
Fun car and great customer service.

None of them they're car stealerships!!!

Damn this is valuable stuff
I have no problem waiting, most people out there are accostumed to getting most everything at the moment they want it.
Not so. Why do people have thousands in credit card debt?
2 Q: 1. does the dealer pull credit at order or delivery
2. Is there a delay clause for the deposit if it gets stuck in assembly and is delayed over the time alloted ?
You should never finances through a dealer unless they can beat your pre-approved bank or credit union.
Happens more than you realize
I hadn't thought about special ordering my last car. I bought one with options I didn't want in order to get the ones I did want.
That can be annoying. Cuz you can never get the prices of those unwanted options off.
Not related to the topic of this video, but I learned a lot from this channel and was able to negotiate good deal on a car last fall. Thanks for making great content and sharing your insider knowledge!
Will the dealer need a credit check before placing my order?
Yes. The deal will need to be done before placing the order.
Same here
You can try but it’s all on the dealer on how much they want to stick you, I ordered a 2020 scat pack and I was able to get it for about 10% under msrp but then I ended up having to pay everything else on it.
Same for me, have you found a deal?
How do you know if the dealership is holding out on giving you the mfg incentives? ... since it's in the future
Exactly, they love it when you fall in love with a specific vehicle- then they know they've got you and can charge more.
How do you find out the dealer's invoice price based on the options you choose? Do you trust what the salesman tells you?
You ask for it.
