  • Nina Shekhar describes herself as a quirkhead. She realized she wasn't alone when she found out there was a name to her experience: obsessive compulsive disorder. In spite of support from close friends and family, Nina struggled with low self esteem and depression. Through counseling from CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) she learned the value of mindfulness, self-care and treating herself with kindness. Nina's chamber piece "Quirkhead" (featured in this video) played a role in her process of self-healing. She has now embraced her OCD and the ways in which her musical life has benefited from it.
The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance is committed to supporting students dealing with mental health concerns. If you or someone you know needs counseling, please contact CAPS (www.caps.umich.edu) or SMTD CAPS Counselor Emily Hyssong, LMSW.
