George is one of the most amazing guitar men ever. I have been playing for over 50 years, and I still can't make sense of what I see him doing and what I'm hearing. His fingers are unlike anyone else alive or dead. I saw him in the summer of 1976, when the Breezin' album came out. Michael Franks was the warm up act, and he was jazzed like crazy because he had forgotten his guitar strap in LA, and George had lent him his. It's the one in the pic on the back of the Breezin' album. He thought is was SO cool. And it was. Then George came out and his bass player came out, dropped a tambourine on the floor, stepped into it, plugged his bass in, and played both all night long. George blew me away like nobody's business. I had to go home and digest what I had seen and heard, so I didn't even take the guitar out of the case for 3 days. There was no point. This man is an absolute master of the 6 string instrument. Funny thing is, though, I have a DVD of a private lesson with GB, and he clearly KNOWS what he's doing, but explaining it to you? That's a different story. One AMAZING player, and a sweet guy, from what I've heard and can tell.
This song originally came out LONG before 1998, I fell in love with it when it first came out in 1963. George's version was released in 1978, and I fell in love all over again.

I saw George Benson in concert at a jazz festival in Jacksonville Fl in 1987 when I was stationed there for the Navy. It was him, Dizzy Gillespie, Al Hirt. My love of Jazz began then.
a bit of George's history: his original "claim to fame" was primarily as an instrumental jazz guitarist in the 1960s, very well-known and respected. He rarely did vocals until the mid 1970s, when his "Breezin'" album was a huge breakthrough -- and I recall Guitar Player magazine featuring him (again) at the time, pretty much in awe of the fact this great guitarist they'd known and featured for years had some serious vocal talent as well. His famous recording of the Drifters' song "On Broadway" was on a live album from 1978, and became a huge hit, a Grammy winner, and pretty much a signature song for him.
When I hear him and some other great jazz guitarists. I can't help but say thank you Mr. Wes Montgomery for blazing the trail to a great style of guitar playing
My mother listened to "Big "Band" and daddy liked ballads. My favorite aunt listened to Beethoven and Mozart. My older brother liked The Righteous Brothers and my older sister liked Elvis. I grew up with 70s/80s Rock n Roll. It's great to have appreciation for all kinds of music and I am grateful that the stereo was always playing in my house.
I was 4 going on 5 in 1955/1956 with three older brothers and three older sisters. I remember the music they listened to like it was yesterday. I remember Mama listening to Mahalia Jackson's TV show and Tennessee Ernie Ford and Pat Boone's shows. Never liked Pat Boone much, but I'll never forget Elvis's debut on Ed Sullivan and one sister so excited by it. When the songs from that era play I can sing along almost word for word. By the time I was twenty/twenty-five, I couldn't tell you who sang the songs I liked to listen to. Life happened. I would never have remembered George Benson's name, though I loved his songs. And that goes for much of the music you react to.
As someone who grew-up with George Benson's original version of "On Broadway" - his all-time signature song - being the be-all, end-all version of it, at first I had kind-of hoped you would have done it instead of this one. However, this wonderful version that he did over 20 years later is also great in its own right. And it's great to hear how he evolved the tune over time. And man, he still brought it so big vocally in 1998. George Benson is such a Jazz legend and an amazing performer. All all-time star.
Behind his popular singing act, George Benson has always been one of the greatest improvising guitarists of all time. To hear his total mastery of jazz guitar, check out Benson’s first records, “Uptown with the George Benson Quartet” and “The George Benson Cookbook” with a great organ player and a young 20’s Ronnie Cuber killing it on the baritone sax solos.
The original by The Drifters was released in 1963. Benson's version was 1978. At first I believed Carol King wrote this, but is was in fact written by friends of hers during that time period. Yes, I did see "Beautiful" on stage in NY that included this song.
My parents did the same thing! They played older music, stuff before my time, when I was too little to even know a good song when it hit my ears; and now I love listening this genre. Thanks for reacting to this song!
George Benson, like others of the 70s and 80s were the best at their craft… We called them legacy entertainers, thanks for reacting to our legacy. Great music never died. You can always learn and love years later and that’s what you’re doing and that’s wonderful…
One of my all time favorites. A great guitar player and singer. I was lucky enough to have met him once very briefly in an elevator. Easily one of the nicest people I've ever met.
I practically played the grooves off my George Benson records! Have you heard his "This Masquerade"? No matter - all George Benson is pure amazing! Thanks for your reaction.
George Benson goes way back as one the finest jazz guitarists and crossed over to the pop charts in the late 70's with the album "Weekend in L.A." which included "On Broadway' which is a Drifters song from the early 60's, "The Greatest Love of All" later covered by Whitney Houston, and "It's All in the Game."

I can't believe that Jools Holland was playing piano on Stage with George Benson playing his guitar.
The perfect combination of technique and soul= George Benson!!!
George Benson and Smokey Robinson. The men who can save anyone's soul thru music
Great song! Great Guitarist!
The original by The Drifters was released in 1963. Benson's version was 1978. At first I believed Carol King wrote this, but is was in fact written by friends of hers during that time period. Yes, I did see "Beautiful" on stage in NY that included this song.
This Broadway is the NY Broadway - plays, musicals. Always loved this song soooo much!
I was today years old when I found out this was George Benson. My favorite version.
We played this in our high school marching band. Always a favorite...
His "scat" singing while playing the guitar always blew my mind how cool it sounded.
Brings to mind Dobie Gray- The 'In' Crowd.
Love Dobie Gray, hope we get to hear some ♡
Love George Benson.. his music is good for the soul.
Can NOT go wrong with George Benson, not ever. I'd love to see your reaction to his version of "This Masquerade." Thanks as always, Jamel!
Been listening to Benson since the 70s, never gets old.
My parents did the same thing! They played older music, stuff before my time, when I was too little to even know a good song when it hit my ears; and now I love listening this genre. Thanks for reacting to this song!
George is one of the greatest!
No autotune!💖💖💖
Everything this genius does is excellent! More please!
Watching you jam to this song is pure pleasure. thank you
Hello there,

Darn it, I missed it. Thanks.
George Benson's the complete package. He's got it all.
Our high school marching band played this during halftime football games
I knew George would be busting out some serious guitar in this live version. Great performance all around from the band.
This was my generation of music, was a great time to be alive.
I have a memory of my sister and I singing this in the car. We both knew every word.
Some songs/artists have a magical ability to give the listeners goosebumps. This guy gives me full body goosebumps on top of goosebumps.
GB Makes my heart sing!
"This brother is smooth" - yes indeed. Not no parkay, not no margarine, strictly BUTTER baby.

George Benson is awesome jazz guitarist. Saw him in concert back in the late 70s. He's a great singer and musician. That Live Album On Broadway is incredible if you're a jazz fan.
