  • On March 14th, 2012, the Oklahoma State Secular Organization invited Seth Andrews, host of The Thinking Atheist, to do a presentation for OSSU members and guests at Oklahoma State University.
The speech, titled "That's Ridiculous," explores some of the more unusual, humorous and often shocking religious and cultural traditions from around the world, relating them to Seth's former Christian faith and challenging their validity in our modern age.

I can say that there's at least one good thing that came out of me reading the bible for so many years. . . .
It helped me to become a passionate atheist/secular humanist :-)

What a fantastic presentation, and what I really respect about you, (apart from your sonorous voice and your ability to lecture for 45 minutes without pause), is that you manage to present all of this information without getting snooty or without patronising theists. You put their beliefs into a context that causes them to challenge the wisdom of those beliefs, without attacking them. I definitely feel that this is the most effective approach as it does not provoke a defensive reaction.

One of the most valuable 45 minutes I've ever been fortunate enough to experience. I'm there. It takes an Insider to know. I've sit quietly with the knowledge of the blood and the rape of the Old Testament since the age of 21. But now I recognize that I have to pull it back again. It's not safe to be an open atheist, disabled, impoverished and in the south. I keep it between myself and like-minded people only now. I am quite sure that recent events in my life totaling the cost of about $3,000, was due to my declaration of atheist or anti-theist. (An investment failed.)
Some Christians can be just as cruel as any number of other religious people.
One does not have to be religious to be righteous. Neither does one have to be atheist to be cruel.
    Thank you. So much.

Wow, that was a great presentation, Seth. It's great to see someone really comparing the ridiculous nature of a bunch of different religions, and being able to point out to Christians that theirs is just as flawed. Now we just have to figure out a way to get you into churches to deliver this sermon.

I once had a roommate who got irritated because I loved to watch Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Farscape, Firefly, The Orville, etc. He said he doesn’t “believe” in Science Fiction. I told him it was just based on speculation about how the world will be in the future. He said speculation about the future is stupid. I asked him why. He said, he knows all about the future of the world because it’s all in Revelation. I give up.

I believe in the uniformity of nature. I have a grounding for the belief that this is the way it is and will be unchanging. A material naturalist will have to ground it somewhere other than the Christian theist. This is the whole issue that I've been repeating from the start. Thanks for the back and forth. You are much more gracious than most atheists I talk to and have met. At least you've learned that name calling isn't too intellectual.

Christianity loves to help people who are "broken" or will break them down if they have confidence in themselves without Jesus or their church.
The little bit of food, used clothes or crappy homeless shelters many Christian churches offer is a tiny fraction of the millions or even billions of dollars they take in from donations,
often 10% of everyones earnings, or sometimes everything they own, whether their rich or poor(or free money or expensive assets like a car or boat)

I just can't understand how adult people can seriously believe in any of religious stuff.
I mean, did they try to think thoroughly?
I was raised in a christian family, but I was never very religious and by the age of 15-16 became an atheist, then an agnostic, and now i'm realizing more and more that i'm an atheist again.
Believing in christian (or any other) god for 25-30-35 years is inconceivable
