- On March 14th, 2012, the Oklahoma State Secular Organization invited Seth Andrews, host of The Thinking Atheist, to do a presentation for OSSU members and guests at Oklahoma State University.
The speech, titled "That's Ridiculous," explores some of the more unusual, humorous and often shocking religious and cultural traditions from around the world, relating them to Seth's former Christian faith and challenging their validity in our modern age.
Seth Andrews is one of my favourite atheists. I could listen to him all day. He's sane, reasonable, persuasive and right.
well said
I can say that there's at least one good thing that came out of me reading the bible for so many years. . . .
It helped me to become a passionate atheist/secular humanist :-)
I found it amusing that my catholic highschool had no room 13... but a locker number 666. O_o
Dear Seth,
Though you are probably aware of this I just want to say
(1) that you are a fantastically engaging and passionate speaker and
(2) that your work is respected and enjoyed by people from all over the world
best wishes from Ireland =)
a light in the darkness, a hero in the dumb human world.
greatest speeches
Man you've really got the whole Preacher voice thing down. I grew up with televangelists on the T.V.(TOUCH THE SCREEN! TOUCH THE SCREEN!)
What a fantastic presentation, and what I really respect about you, (apart from your sonorous voice and your ability to lecture for 45 minutes without pause), is that you manage to present all of this information without getting snooty or without patronising theists. You put their beliefs into a context that causes them to challenge the wisdom of those beliefs, without attacking them. I definitely feel that this is the most effective approach as it does not provoke a defensive reaction.
"Religion began when the first scoundrel met the first fool."
Voltaire
Thank goodness that people such as Seth Andrews are challenging 21st century humanity to actually THINK about and REASON their values and beliefs - religious or not.
As always great work Seth. You are truly an inspiration to more people than you understand.
The Jedi religion seems more believable than Christianity
+EmmettofAwesomeness I believe you have a point.
What about Pastafarianism?
The Flying Spaghetti Monster's noodly appendage bestows many blessings indeed.
In nomine Pesto, et Fusilli, et Spaghetti Sancti. Ramen.
"Imagine a culture shifting" You say you know your limitations, but they are irrelevant Seth. Your sincerity, passion and motivation are inspiring. You do good work, very, very, very good work.
all your videos are fantastic. but this one, this is is beyond that. thank you so much for saying exactly what needs to be said
@TheThinkingAtheist that was very nice of you. this speech was great, and i've shared it on my facebook, even though i only have like 20 people on my list, and probably less that follow as a result of posting great material like this... this was awesome, thanks.
One of the most valuable 45 minutes I've ever been fortunate enough to experience. I'm there. It takes an Insider to know. I've sit quietly with the knowledge of the blood and the rape of the Old Testament since the age of 21. But now I recognize that I have to pull it back again. It's not safe to be an open atheist, disabled, impoverished and in the south. I keep it between myself and like-minded people only now. I am quite sure that recent events in my life totaling the cost of about $3,000, was due to my declaration of atheist or anti-theist. (An investment failed.)
Some Christians can be just as cruel as any number of other religious people.
One does not have to be religious to be righteous. Neither does one have to be atheist to be cruel.
Thank you. So much.
Seth, Great again! I'm in AR.and I feel alone somtimes! I applaud your work! Thanks so much!!!!
Wow, that was a great presentation, Seth. It's great to see someone really comparing the ridiculous nature of a bunch of different religions, and being able to point out to Christians that theirs is just as flawed. Now we just have to figure out a way to get you into churches to deliver this sermon.
This was excellent.
Seth, you are awesome. Thanks for more good material.
Amazing, thanks soo much seth, really good talk
Love the podcast, and look forward to each episode; thanks for posting this :-)
Love his voice...
Extremely well done Seth ! ! ! Ten thumbs up!
@TheThinkingAtheist... I stood up & applauded your presentation, VERY well done.
Brilliant talk, Seth. Funny and engaging. Dude, you seriously got the goods. :) Well done!
Nicely done Seth. An excellent presentation!
That was a fantastic presentation, I wish I could have seen it personally.
You're a great speaker, Seth! I had expected as much, because your podcasts have shown you to be very charismatic.
Excellent material too. Loved it.
I like how you featured the audience, yourself and the pictures all at once.
I bet Seth does a mean Jack Nicholson.
Excellent job Seth, keep up the good work.
Fantastic Thanks so much Seth, you hit the nail on the head for sure to why I lost my faith, definately shared to my FB page. Thank you for always keeping me entertained, see you in Kelowna!
Great video. Thanks for a great speach.
Thanks for the video for us who could not be there in person.
Shocked at how few people were there. I would've thought it would've been packed. One day I think your talks will be standing room only. You have a great approach. Just found this & was eager to see what you had to say. Been listening to your presentations for a while & I really appreciate your insights. Your reasoning is solid while always being kind & good humored. Nice to see someone (& in your case hear someone) & get the feeling that this person is doing what they should be doing in life.
Incredible. Excellent. Not enough words to describe the extraordinary nature of this presentation. Thank you, Seth, for your work.
Well done, Seth. That took time to evolve from many of your talk shows and its pieced together professionally.
i cant believe why only a few ppl show up :(. but great talk!!!!!! awesome thinking atheist !
Easily one of the best presentations I've ever seen...I'll definitely be telling my friends in Canada to check you out in Kamloops.
May the force be with you! Excellent really well done. I would love to see a book that highlights more ridiculous beliefs in both the Christian bible and the Koran. Call it "that's ridiculous" Seth you have a special gift you are able to completely disarm religious folks while pointing out the absolute absurdity of their belief.
Great video. if more ppl though like this the world would truly be a. Better place for all animals( us included) great work
I once had a roommate who got irritated because I loved to watch Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Farscape, Firefly, The Orville, etc. He said he doesn’t “believe” in Science Fiction. I told him it was just based on speculation about how the world will be in the future. He said speculation about the future is stupid. I asked him why. He said, he knows all about the future of the world because it’s all in Revelation. I give up.
Here! Here! Great presentation.
"Thank God I'm Not Going to Be Tortured for Eternity"
"Thank God My Family or Friends Survived"
"Thank God I Have Plenty of Food or Money"
(Good for Me, God Must Love Me)
Very good speech, i enjoyed it very much.
Thank you Seth!
Yeah I've been listening for months and never thought to put a face to the voice I listened to enthusiastically.
I'd seen some of your other videos, but I had no idea until now that you were an Okie. That's awesome! :D Being an atheist in Oklahoma was a very lonely experience 17 years ago; it would have been really nice if some of today's resources had been available back then. Good luck on bringing OK out of the Dark Ages, and keep up the good work!
A meme I read,
“Sometimes I look at people and think, is THAT 😳! THE sperm 😩 that won 🤪?” Lol 😂, Aloha 🌺
Excellent presentation, Seth, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Fantastic video. Thanks for your work!
THAT WAS A GREAT TALK, Seth. You are very good at this! Keep it up!
its refreshing to see so many new things, when you said in your podcast you whould add some new stuff i did not think it was gonna be this good , great job man :P you are one of the few peapole who can talk about these things without sounding too condecending or too insulting :P
great job man :D
Seth, when I saw this, I wanted to jump through the screen and give you a bear hug! I sooo relate.
engaging talk, thanks for posting
20:45 If I want rodents running across my bare feet, I'll just walk around my apartment wearing no footwear.
I was seriously still questioning whether anyone could walk on water,
if they really believed they could, even in the first few years after I became an atheist in 2016.
There is still a tiny part of me that wonders if anyone has ever or can move anything with their mind.
Even though I'm almost positive its ridiculous.
Brilliant presenter and speaker.
I believe in the uniformity of nature. I have a grounding for the belief that this is the way it is and will be unchanging. A material naturalist will have to ground it somewhere other than the Christian theist. This is the whole issue that I've been repeating from the start. Thanks for the back and forth. You are much more gracious than most atheists I talk to and have met. At least you've learned that name calling isn't too intellectual.
Thanks for uploading this!
Christianity loves to help people who are "broken" or will break them down if they have confidence in themselves without Jesus or their church.
The little bit of food, used clothes or crappy homeless shelters many Christian churches offer is a tiny fraction of the millions or even billions of dollars they take in from donations,
often 10% of everyones earnings, or sometimes everything they own, whether their rich or poor(or free money or expensive assets like a car or boat)
Great speech. I loved it. You illustrated your stance very well.
Great video, enjoyed it very much!
@TheThinkingAtheist looking forward to it....as long as the audio is decent, that's all that matters!
i've been waiting for more videos like this
Excellent! Thank you for this.
Seth that was an excellent presentation! I especially like how you compared the crazy and ridiculous rituals that take place here in America, to some of the crazy ass rituals performed in other countries. Excellent!
I can so relate with Seth. My upbringing and family born again xtianty are almost a carbon copy.
bravo bravo bravo, Seth!
Children are told to love the Bible more than anything before they can read a single word!
Why can't everyone be educated like this man? WHY?
I asked my cat Ronald since he was sitting on the back of my chair as I'm watching this to tell me the weather, he just glared at me.. Definitely gonna rain tomorrow.
Love that voice ! Love the message. Thank yoy for doing this, it's importaint.
life is just a fantasy can you live this fantasy life. If you're an eighties child you may know what I mean. Great job Seth!!!
Aldo Nova. JBJ schtole his schtick!
Aldo Nova!!!! Loved that song. Thanks for reminding me of it!
Great and very clever talk that made indeed perfect sense. Well done! :)
i can't say that i have anyone close to me attending AA, but it absolutely disgusts me when people are stripped of their independence, dignity, and ability and are instead told they are trash, useless left to their own... he is being treated like a sheep. I really feel for you. The most you could do for him is to be as supportive as possible, it will do wonders for sure :)
I was hoping you had recorded your talk, thank you. Wish I was there
Glad I made it
amazing talk!
I just can't understand how adult people can seriously believe in any of religious stuff.
I mean, did they try to think thoroughly?
I was raised in a christian family, but I was never very religious and by the age of 15-16 became an atheist, then an agnostic, and now i'm realizing more and more that i'm an atheist again.
Believing in christian (or any other) god for 25-30-35 years is inconceivable
I wish there was a devine meaning to attain from my cat's coughing up hairballs and kibble that he has wolfed down. Then maybe my stomach wouldn't get so woozy and nauseous knowing that I was witnessing a "miracle".:)
His voice here is indescribably different than on the radio. Yet, equally awesome.
Now I know why aliens don’t come on our planet!!!
Seth, your description of a worldview (last 2 minutes) sounds pretty good. I would like to visit that world some day. ;)
Great talk, as always.
Felidomancy works. My cat can accurately predict when she likes new food.
Thank god I'm an atheist!
Excellent speech, Seth!
Regarding unlucky 13, I was once working on a suite of programs (numbered sequentially) and told my boss, "I'm not superstitious but numbering the monthly database culling program 13 might be asking for trouble so let's make it 14."
He replied, "No, you'd better make it 15 - John's not superstitious either."
Good presentation!!
Well done, Seth. Posting to fb.
Interesting talk, thanks for the upload! On the subject of when what strikes us as 'ridiculous' or normal/charming, I'd suggest the book Strange Histories by Darren Oldridge about what bizarre things people believed in the Middle Ages and early Modern times. Very enlightening.
Great video as usual. I actually knew about that temple in India that has Rats. Just like when I saw it on TV I had to look away on your video.
It is amazing what stupid things people believe in.
Then again there was a man in the 70s that convince a group of people to move with him to the jungles of Guyana.
Great video, i hope it has opened na lot of eyes.
What a splendid video.
I really enjoy this and the Shell Game video. You should make more of these videos even if you are not speaking to a group of people in a room.
You're the man, Seth. Keep up the awesome job!
The frightening thing is how many people are taken in by this.
How can so many Christians believe that its good to be humble and "The love of money is the root of all evil" while completely supporting a presidential candidate who is one of the most arrogant and greediest people on Earth?
Excellent! Instant classic! Well done!
I like the way you put the video together. Very well done. There are many presentations that I wish I could watch but the audio quality is bad so I end up not watching it. Keep up the great work!
Great talk. Seth, funny that the shirt you are wearing here looks a lot like a clergy cloak. LOL
