Will This Acura RL Start After Sitting for 2 Years?

- I was board, so I decided to see if my Acura RL would start after sitting outside on the ground for more than 2 years. Do you think I’ll be able to just fire it up, or will I have to jump through some hoops to make it run? Will it ever run at all?

Rare 1998 RL Special Edition! Send that thing over here and let me restore it!
You would have your work cut out for sure. Maybe when I move. It's too useful to me ATM.
I was about to say the very same thing Tyson lolll
Love your IG page Tyson!
I was looking to see Tyson’s comment lol, I love your channel I’ve always had a thing for Honda and Acura, I have a 03 Pilot EX-L and a 2006 MDX Touring with RES and Nav I love it
@@ETCG1 Please send it to Tyson as soon as you can! He is the absolute master of 80s and 90s and Hondas.
I love these cars, it breaks my heart to see it like this. Honestly hearing it rev sounds like playing a Nintendo 64 when it freezes
🤣🤣 oh no Eric! Now that showed that car on UA-cam someone is going to make you restore it
So -- had to take my daughter's turtle to Vet... passed by your shop and saw the hood up on the car and said to her " I bet ETCG is filming a new video " She looked at me like... what are you talking about.
@whacky pax I'll stop by when he is filming the LS1 engine swap in that Acura !
Number 1 , and it's a Honda , so yep it'll start
During the quarantine I worked on two cars of mine that were parked for 6 months also did some minor scadual maintenance on my daily driver Accord. I literally live in the garage these weeks
The reason I love Acura, Japanese engineering at its best!
This would be a great new video series!
It would take forever to produce since I have to wait 2 years for each video. 😉
Eric this was an awesome car deserves some care😉
Thanks for sharing👍
Stay safe Bro👍
Thanks for the vid Eric!!
You can always count on an old Japanese car to start like it was running the day before after sitting outside for years.
spikerbrad23 i have honda lawn mower it would start first pull after winter. I also have toro snow blower got it brand new and it would NOT start after sitting thru the summer. Japanese quality is very good
This was simply just awesome and brightened my day lol. I was bored yesterday and decided to rotate the tires on my wife’s car. I never have rotated tires before and I can say I did it safely, and I’ll do it again!
We appreciate ya keeping on keeping on. Stay safe and dirty.
Thank you Eric I always love watching your videos I am from South Africa
Eric, apparently you just don't have "The Fonz" touch on that hood release. Lol
"Ayyyy!"
- Henry Winkler
I don't get it... What's ''The Fonz'' ?
@@Echohb The Fond was a character named Arthur Fonzarelli, they called him Fonzi or The Fonz for short, on a TV show back in the late 70s and early 80s called Happy Days. The character was played by Henry Winkler.
With one thump on the car, the latch woulda been free, and the hood up all at once. Lol
outstanding!!!
stay safe eric
I had this car for quite some time and I really loved it. The engine worked until its last hours. Yet what went bad was everything else. Brakes, interior started falling apart, the chassis has rusted apart.. but the engine was still pulling strong even on the last day on the way to the scrapyard!
Thanks for the video eric :)
Great video Eric
Thank you Eric for the video. It nice having just a fun entertaining moment at this time. Stay dirty.
This does put a smile to my face! :)
You have released the magic smoke... Well done sir !
It Sings to you Eric Good Job!
The best digital cake EVER! 😂🤣😂
I've found any vehicle built after 1995 will have the alternator seized solid after 6-12 months of sitting over an unpaved surface. They go up in smoke, then BAM! The tensioner slams back as the belt melts in 2. I almost had a fire once in a '05 Mustang in which the same thing happened. The belt got so hot there were glowing embers dropping down onto my flatbed trailer where it was parked! I shut the engine down after I saw the shower of embers, and when the belt snapped it scared the crap out of me, LOL. That tensioner swung back HARD!
I like will it start videos and ETCG videos in general :)
This was fun to watch
pretty awesome. the comedian in me wishes that "let the engine rev" scene lasted like 40 minutes.
Thanks for not totally busting up the grille!
Honda Engineers at home: That shit better start.
Engine starts.
HEH Perfect. We know how to build motors.
Thats awesome. I had a 1988 civic wagon and towards the end of its life 2004 or so I used to not drive it in winter to help with the rust and stored it in a barn and took out the battery. It always started in spring :-). The car was ultimately killed by rust and did not pass inspection but mechanically everything was fine.
We miss the vigor and that old subaru sw. I subscribed because i like to see an old car that has no value or it doesn't make economic sense to repair NOT beeing scrapped. A car that doesn't deserve to be saved but a guy does it anyway. For me, that video is more entertaining than all the fairmont videos. Keep it up Eric! We want to see more junk
My old Integra started up great after 4+ years. Good old hondas.
I remember when these first came out! My neighbors got one brand new at the time in beige and it was a very nice car!
Same here. My uncle had one of these a 97 model. I thought that was such an awesome car after NSX. Looking back, i just liked all cars ( still like NSX w/ the flip up lights).
Finally on my birthday! . Thank you Erik. Stay safe, Stay dirty.
Happy Birthday!
Kind of like an episode of CWM or Mustie1 ... "Will it Run?" ... Of course it will. What happens after is another matter ... 😁
Cheers, stay safe and stay well!
Several of my Panthers have sat for 2 years or more and some have even sat for over 10 years and they've all started right up except for two of them that had frozen fuel pumps. Instead of replacing them, I applied power to them at the fpdm to spin them backwards then forwards to get them unstuck. Works every time.
always like it when one of those came into the dealership. pretty easy to work on reliable as the day is long.
Good cars always stay good cars. Just for that she deserves a new life.
That was awesome.
I hadn't noticed the trucks idling in the background till you mentioned it.
Today's my birthday!!!!!! I'm going to grab a huge piece of that digital cake with a glass of ice-cold milk!
Thank you, Eric!
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday! Drunken Ken will sing when he wakes up.
Might be getting one of these soon
Sometimes it's fun to just go out and mess with some old junk you care nothing about and see what it'll do. This makes me want to go out to the shed and pull the seized up starter on one of my garden tractors that hasn't run in 3 years or so and see if I can get it to turn over.
My 93' Toyota Tercel started up after 5 years just fine, but alternator was seized just like yours.
Love the car itself, but the state it's in makes me cry.
Hey Eric !!! hahaha 2 things 1st thing and its in now way a criticism, i have a motorbike and i left it for yrs and what i did before i started it up was to take the plugs out and put a tiny bit of diesel down the cylinders just to add lube to them. Then turned the engine over with out the plugs in to get rid of the diesel and to lube them, popped the plugs back in and fired her right up 😀. 2nd thing, glad you took my advise and added the audio of the type r to the end of the videos 👍nice touch.
A couple of things. 1st, if I cared about this car, I would have done more to preserve it when I started it. Excellent suggestion BTW. Its only purpose is as a gate as I mentioned in the video. 2nd, the audio at the end is actually my dads truck, not the Type R. Thanks for your comment.
This thing makes the same noises I do when I wake up in the morning! :D
An ETCG1 where spanners are turned!? Yes please!!!
Hondas. Gotta love em!
Good job.
Thanks. I’m off for the next two weeks
This car needs love and I demand that it gets it
Quality for starting. Who need Ac
Wow...Honda engineering...impressive....👍😁
2:19 = me starting my car every morning.
had an 97 ls integra sitting for 2 years. got a new battery and it started right up
I bet it will. I have an Accord that has been parked several times for several months at a time. It's an 03 v6 with 283k and it is my back up car and it has sat for over 6 months without being started for about 3 times. I start it and drive it at least once a month now.
Funny...the second it started up and the belt squealed, I immediately said "Alternator!" The exact same thing happened on my '97 CR-V after it had sat for a few months and yes, it melted the belt. I'm just going to fix it up enough (replace rusted oil pan) to sell it and get it out of my life (as a mechanic's special). I'm going to do what I can to free up the alternator and get it rotating. I've had it since new. Time to move it along and make room for more Honda hoopties. 😁
Dang 1 day off lol. My birthday was yesterday. Thanks Eric!
Happy belated Birthday!
Please make some more videos on this RL. THE
Timing belt, starter and the steering wheel tilt fix ETC. ETCG1
Not with this car. It's just not worth it.
@@ETCG1 Noooooooo!
LOL!
Nice video must have a lot of truckers park by your shop then?
I knew it would start, lol. I had a 97 corolla that was parked for 7 years. It was in an accident and I had to park it. After 7 years I decided to see what I could do to get it back on the road. I put a battery in it and it turned on like I just had it running a few minutes before, unbelievable!
Some reason the running trucks added a vintage etcg feel to it.
I love these first gen RL I’ve always wanted one
Good cars. Even when neglected and abused.
ETCG1 I agree
Honda videos are the best
Yesterday was my 22nd birthday, thank you for the cake Eric! ahahah. Good video by the way!
Happy Birthday!
I have a 1996 acura rl it is still my favorite car I have ever driven I have done som modifications to the engine for more hp and torque and put a 1995 acura legend 6 speed in it, it was sopost to make 210hp from factory but I pushed it to 400 hp naturally aspirated with a haltec ecu I also replaced the cast piston's with forged pistons and reengineered the hydrolic lifters into regular lifters with manual adjustment screws and upgraded the difaranchal to a L.S.D. acura legend type 2 cams and custom exoust heders with a varex xforce adustible exoust custom interior and custom paint upgrade suspension and custom front and rear torque bar with a brace in the front and the rear it looks stock but definitely is not. it also has tint the turns different shades depending on the time of day and driver's preference it can be 1%=dark or 100%=light the front headlights are custom I maid the 2005 acura RL movable lens fit in the 1996 housing and replaced the plastic covers for the headlight with a removable custom glas lens so it can never fade and a lot more mods I am planning to go twinturbo but I am still figuring out whair can I put them with out melting anything and still making it serviceable
"Rev up your engines!!" Ole Scotty would be proud. Future derby car maybe? Good video!!
As a trucker, I apologize for some of my fellow drivers being animals and throwing garbage out.
Thank you for that. Littler is something I just can't stand. I wish my landlord felt the same way.
Keep that honda running. I loved watching it. To you its just a gate. To others its a treasure. Lol
Eric No! Ah, you're killing me. I have a '96 RL that I have loved for 12 years now and it was agonizing to watch this.
Don't feel bad. This car was DOA, check out the video in the description. Thanks for the comment.
Is it always best to check the oil first before you start the car
Before seeing, with good battery. I say YES.
Do all windows roll down? If so, we can change the alternator and used it for a drive by...hope the trunk is empty cuz is a must too.
These were back in the day when Honda/Acura made very reliable cars. Back in the late 90s and early 2000s I liked the two toned luxury cars.
OMG cake. Love it.
More vids like this!
I had a Porsche 911 once owned by a veterinarian with a big dog. I sold it after eight years and it still had some dog hair in it.
Eric, I have a car that has been on storage for 3 years. Is there anything you recommend I do before attempting to start it?
Very entertaining
I enjoyed this one as I have 1998. Doesn't sound like yours though.
That car would be great for the Neutral Drop Channel.
By the time I get back in my Honda it will likely look the same.
every time I let my civic sit too long, the alternator seizes up from rust between the rotor and field.. I put a socket on it and works it back and forth to break the rust free, and blow it out with air, and it's good until next time I park it. Routine stuff.
Was thinking the same thing... no don't cut the belt, he cut the belt.
@@wobblysauce and the wrong one at that!
Yeah I try to start every engine at least once a month, and take the bike for a ride. Every time I'm amazed how the wind cuts through a Carhartt, a fleece, 2 hoodies, and a t-shirt going only 30.
This gives me an idea. You should C35 swap a civic. C35 would definitely be different
No redline for a good time, Eric? 😂
I miss dave :(
I would have removed the mice from the air box first. Maybe it runs better on mice?
I’d love to see this car fixed up and given to someone in need.
It's too far gone for that. It would cost way more than the car is worth and I would be concerned about it's reliability. Letting a car sit like this over the open ground is the worst thing you can do for them. This one has been in this spot for at least 4 years. Thanks for the comment.
I'm thinking of getting a 2017 Accord, would you recommend?
New nickname for the car? "Ol'Reliable"
Moldy Oldy.
Cool burnout.
You should bring that car to its former glory. It would be a great video series :D
This car was junk when I bought it, not worth saving. Thanks for the comment.
@@ETCG1 oh well ☹ at least it can work as s parts car.
@@Kevin09210 That's why I bought it in the first place, link in the description to the video of when I first got the car. Thanks for your comments.
“There’s smoke! Smoke smoke smoke!” J. Clarkson
eric my 2005 acura rl was having a brake pump problem and the vsa light was on so i replaced the pump and module but now the vsa light is still on and now the awd light is on have you ran into this problem before maybe its a communiction problem i dont know its driving me crazy can you help thanks david
Vtech kick it yo.
It's already dropped , just need to give it that sweet stance and stretched tires
Just came here before watching the video to say yes, it will run. It may need a jumper pack but it will fire up and run.
Does it move ? Back and forth?
Will start
If you did care about the engine what would you have done before turning the starter? I have a old Toyota that has sat outside for equal amount of time, thanks.
Maybe put a drop of oil in each spark plug hole and remove the fuel pump fuse so that I could crank the engine over before starting. That way the cylinders don't start up dry and the engine has a chance to build some oil psi before starting.
The alternator give up its magic smoke for you!
