Fun experiment. I am not sure why you thought you wouldn't need gas flow, though. Regardless of whether or not you have a base metal to protect from oxidation, etc, you absolutely still have a tungsten to protect. And probably more importantly, the breakdown voltage in argon is much lower than it is in air..5-10x depending on conditions. That no doubt had a lot to do with your arc starting difficulties.
Interesting thought. I mainly didn’t want the gas all over the hot dog I was about to eat haha
@@Teysik It's an inert gas though. It literally doesn't and can't react or leave any residual. It's displaced by regular air again pretty much as soon as it stops flowing.
