A great teacher is measured in some sense by whether you stare at the clock on the wall and long for the end of class versus hanging on to every word the teacher says. I haven’t looked at my clock once!! I had a few awesome professors in my college years, but I wish Peterson was one of them!! It’s so awesome that we can have this through UA-cam. Thanks Dr. Peterson!!
+missluisagemma umm ... sometimes if you learn something by experience --- you understand it way more then you would by reading a book or listening to a lecture ... your suffering wasn't a waste if you found "gold" in it.
+missluisagemma You could find it to be perfect that you've come across this much needed information now, clearly it came to you at the right time, seeing as that's truly better than never at all.
+missluisagemma Defining ourselves by looking back into the past always produces suffering. Defining ourselves by where we are going in the future gives hardship meaning! Orient to the future and the 41 years won't seem like a waste.
Loving more and more his enlightening thoughts. He is such a wonderful human creature with a beautiful mind. Thanks, Prof. Peterson for your intellectually stimulating videos. I hope you will return to the Netherlands for delivering a lecture!
Great channel, thanks for uploading these lectures. I may be spending the next year of my life catching up. By then there will probably be more lectures so there's no end in sight. That's not a bad thing, keep up the good work Sir.
Great insights thank you very much Professor Peterson for your commitment to telling it with sincerity as you understand it. You cover an amazing range of subjects and insights. I am enjoying every moment and will continue to tune in.
Jordan B Peterson I am a disabled Iraq war veteran in the US I suffer PTSD among many other issues I only learned who you are because of the political circumstances surrounding Bill C 16 I have started your course on future authoring and plan to continue all of the self authoring suites And your maps of meaning lectures have been helping me tremendously Thank you so very much for everything that you do I wish you the very best of luck with your current circumstances I'll be rooting for you And if this doesn't result in the worst I hope to one day come see you in person
I found a 14th century image of Mary, God, the Crucifixion and onlookers here: uk.pinterest.com/pin/498210777503263192/ Obviously I don't know if it's exactly what Professor Peterson is referring to (from 8:50 onwards). But it seems close to what he's talking about.
What made us ever think that we could totally get rid of the bad? The same thought pattern that results in ideology? Also, could you please elaborate on "keeping the gold" when you read? Do you have any tips? Thank you.
The idea of the Virgin Mary containing Christ and Christ dwelling within her, like the ultimate Tabernacle and Paradise for the New Adam and the place from which the King rules and dwells, is actually a distinctly Catholic view; so I doubt the inquisition would have had much to say about it. See St. Louis Marie de Montfort, one of the most influential Marian theologians in the history of the Catholic Church.
"Obsolescence" is a noun, the adjective is "obsolete". The pronunciation of αμαρτία is "amartía". Erasmus was wrong on pronunciation. And Eliade is pronunced "Ehliadhe". "Satan" is not directly etymologically related to "Set", but to the Hebrew שטו - Shin Taf Nun, Shatan, which means adversary. The Hebrew term could be related to the Egyptian "Set", but it still has nothing to do with the Copts.
I wonder what the difference between a sacrifice and an investment is. For some reason the word "sacrifice" sounds negative to me, while "investment" sounds quite positive.
It's not so important there you go then you interpretating the storys or conclusions you come up with, but its the tools you giving to look to the world. With the tools we will come to some conclusions by our selfs, we will see how similar it will be.
27:18 Does Greek tragedy count as myth? In the famous play Oedipus Rex, Oedipus tries to escape his fate but ends up killing his father and marrying his mother. His personal decisions did NOT decide the future. The message is that mankind is not in control, but rather doomed to determinism. If myths always say that the future of the world depends on individual choice, then there is either exceptions or Oedipus is not in the same category as a myth. Perhaps it has mythical archetypes but is not a mythical story?
I don't know if it would qualify as a myth, as it has not been passed down through oral traditions for thousands of years. However many stories such as Oedipus Rex, Lord of the Rings, Pinocchio, etc. have the same qualities and underlying meanings as many myths do. Obviously not all stories do.
I gotta say man, your merch options are pretty rough. I'm sorry to whomever thought the lobster shirts and jackets were a cool design/color scheme but it kinda hurts to look at. I would totally rock merch with a large lobster standing up opening its claws and maybe an inspiring/humorous quote somewhere. Sorry but that current design looks like some awkward dollar store table cloth/wallpaper. = |
I have been doing these lectures from my home for the last 4 months. i currently do not have the money to buy the books needed so i have to search the internet in order to at least try to keep up with the lectures. But man, this 28 minute lecture was by far the most boring one. It might be because its so hard for me to understand why it is nessecary to define "anger" in a objective manner. or no, its not hard to understand.. its, just i do not understand HOW it works and i do not understand in what area you use this method and in what way it is usefull. do i need to use this all the time? how "hard" is it to do and how do i do it?
This video is useless, unless you have all the representations in front of you, there's really no point in listening. Much better stuff out there on YTB. Also, the title of the video is completely misleading and concerns less than 5% of the video content.

God I wish these existed when i was younger ,it's heartbreaking finally seeing the light and looking back on 41 years of suffering

+norevelation yeah you're right actually maybe I wasn't ready for this till now ,so there's probably some truth in that ,thanks ☺

I'm so sorry for you. At least you have found it after all; and you have a reason to be thankful. Hope you are doing well in your journey
I would be interested in seeing the images discussed in this lecture
Try Origins and History of Consciousness by Erich Neumann, he has many examples from the osiris myth

The 12 steps have been the basis of all my success. Thanks for a good lecture on arcane knowledge.
I JUST TOTALLY LOVE THIS TALK AND THIS SERIES. GOD! THANK GOD! THANK GOD!!!
Dr. Peterson I'm enjoying this presentation even more than listening to Joseph Campbell or Alan Watts - and that's saying something. Thank you.
Great insights thank you very much Professor Peterson for your commitment to telling it with sincerity as you understand it. You cover an amazing range of subjects and insights. I am enjoying every moment and will continue to tune in.
For those too lazy to google: The Golden Bough is by James Frazer. It's also on youtube, unabridged, as an audiobook.
Thax
Thank you!
I'd love to see your slides alongside the video-lectures :)

eliˈade is how you pronounce Eliade. He does a really good job considering he's a native English speaker.
@20:57 the Eternal Question of Mankind
"the class of all terrifying things..." and " the class of all useful responses"...nice. 16:53

Please, get someone to put the slides on the video!

Excellent. One of my favorites
Can someone help me? 2:40 . Isn't it what the Pragmatics say??
0:38 The Golden Bough, by James Frazer. Highly recommend it.
Have you considered putting this course on coursera??

I've heard that criticism of Campbell, but Jung??
Why doesn’t the camera show the thing he is pointing to?
0.45 James Frazer, Professor.

it seems like you could say it was the discovery of God
Last 2 minutes..... prophetic?

It wasn't a 28 minute lecture. It was the conclusion to a 2 hour lecture after the class took a break!

You used Wikipedia as a resource to write a book? 🙄
