  • This lecture concludes discussion of the Egyptian story, while introducing some methodological considerations. How is it possible to know if the interpretation of a story is not just projection, or erroneous theory self-validation? Are there safeguards against such errors?

    A great teacher is measured in some sense by whether you stare at the clock on the wall and long for the end of class versus hanging on to every word the teacher says. I haven’t looked at my clock once!! I had a few awesome professors in my college years, but I wish Peterson was one of them!! It’s so awesome that we can have this through UA-cam. Thanks Dr. Peterson!!

      +missluisagemma umm ... sometimes if you learn something by experience --- you understand it way more then you would by reading a book or listening to a lecture ... your suffering wasn't a waste if you found "gold" in it.

      +missluisagemma You could find it to be perfect that you've come across this much needed information now, clearly it came to you at the right time, seeing as that's truly better than never at all.

      +missluisagemma Defining ourselves by looking back into the past always produces suffering. Defining ourselves by where we are going in the future gives hardship meaning! Orient to the future and the 41 years won't seem like a waste.

    The idea of the Virgin Mary containing Christ and Christ dwelling within her, like the ultimate Tabernacle and Paradise for the New Adam and the place from which the King rules and dwells, is actually a distinctly Catholic view; so I doubt the inquisition would have had much to say about it. See St. Louis Marie de Montfort, one of the most influential Marian theologians in the history of the Catholic Church.

    "Obsolescence" is a noun, the adjective is "obsolete". The pronunciation of αμαρτία is "amartía". Erasmus was wrong on pronunciation. And Eliade is pronunced "Ehliadhe". "Satan" is not directly etymologically related to "Set", but to the Hebrew שטו - Shin Taf Nun, Shatan, which means adversary. The Hebrew term could be related to the Egyptian "Set", but it still has nothing to do with the Copts.

      eliˈade is how you pronounce Eliade. He does a really good job considering he's a native English speaker.

    It's not so important there you go then you interpretating the storys or conclusions you come up with, but its the tools you giving to look to the world. With the tools we will come to some conclusions by our selfs, we will see how similar it will be.

    I found a 14th century image of Mary, God, the Crucifixion and onlookers here:

    Obviously I don't know if it's exactly what Professor Peterson is referring to (from 8:50 onwards). But it seems close to what he's talking about.

    I wonder what the difference between a sacrifice and an investment is. For some reason the word "sacrifice" sounds negative to me, while "investment" sounds quite positive.

    I gotta say man, your merch options are pretty rough. I'm sorry to whomever thought the lobster shirts and jackets were a cool design/color scheme but it kinda hurts to look at. I would totally rock merch with a large lobster standing up opening its claws and maybe an inspiring/humorous quote somewhere. Sorry but that current design looks like some awkward dollar store table cloth/wallpaper. = |

    27:18 Does Greek tragedy count as myth? In the famous play Oedipus Rex, Oedipus tries to escape his fate but ends up killing his father and marrying his mother. His personal decisions did NOT decide the future. The message is that mankind is not in control, but rather doomed to determinism. If myths always say that the future of the world depends on individual choice, then there is either exceptions or Oedipus is not in the same category as a myth. Perhaps it has mythical archetypes but is not a mythical story?

    • @BrettonFerguson
      @BrettonFerguson 7 років тому

      I don't know if it would qualify as a myth, as it has not been passed down through oral traditions for thousands of years. However many stories such as Oedipus Rex, Lord of the Rings, Pinocchio, etc. have the same qualities and underlying meanings as many myths do. Obviously not all stories do.

    I have been doing these lectures from my home for the last 4 months. i currently do not have the money to buy the books needed so i have to search the internet in order to at least try to keep up with the lectures.
    But man, this 28 minute lecture was by far the most boring one. It might be because its so hard for me to understand why it is nessecary to define "anger" in a objective manner. or no, its not hard to understand.. its, just i do not understand HOW it works and i do not understand in what area you use this method and in what way it is usefull. do i need to use this all the time? how "hard" is it to do and how do i do it?

    • @ralphdavidson9542
      @ralphdavidson9542 3 роки тому

      It wasn't a 28 minute lecture. It was the conclusion to a 2 hour lecture after the class took a break!

    This video is useless, unless you have all the representations in front of you, there's really no point in listening. Much better stuff out there on YTB.
    Also, the title of the video is completely misleading and concerns less than 5% of the video content.
