  • After thwarting Nintendo, creating a post-apocalyptic play place for grownups, and belittling a fledgling Netflix, Blockbuster seemed unstoppable. But in the end - much like a certain movie you could once rent at Blockbuster - there could be only one.

I had a Blockbuster card, but I signed up for Netflix back in 2008-9. I liked getting DVDs delivered, and making a wishlist online. However I often got scratched or broken DVDs from OG Netflix. I remember distinctly when my (then fiancée) husband and I got I Spit On Your Grave (remake) in the mail. Someone had watched a particularly graphic scene, involving SA so many times on repeat that the DVD wouldn't play past that point. We both got extreme grossed out by that and wondered what that DVD had been through. Luckily it was in 6 months that Netflix offered streaming at the same $9 as the DVD exchange. I kinda miss Friday night at Blockbuster; or any rental store. The popcorn smell was amazing.

It was a nostalgic thing for so many of us all all across the world’ im in New Zealand and although there were so many other video and dvd rental stores back in the day Bockbuster was pretty much the main one’ we didn’t have it in the little town I grew up in but an hour away in Dunedin they had one and it was rad’ i fact they all had a sense of comfort about them know that u we’re going to go home and watch what I had all picked to watch’ especially when u could get 2 movies like a horror and a comedy and a couple of kids movies for the kids etc’ that was all pretty rad’ it’s all about that hands on kind of thing’ to hold something in your hands and look at it means so much more’ like watching a record play and it being such a rad experience ✌️

@@thrashinwebsterWhat's sad is that those stores could've still benefited from still making video games rentals. I'm from Rotorua and Video Ezy was my go to.

Blockbuster had an opportunity to own Netflix, but turned it down. Honestly, they could have stayed open and kept the whole business floating on just video game and console rentals.

There was a place called Dimensions where i live. They did well after blockbuster shut down on game and console rentals.
They also had a ball machine that had different colors. Allowing you to just play games in the game room.

Blockbuster needs to come back as a streaming service with every single movie ever made available. Some movies are very hard to find if not impossible.

Blockbuster was a great way to get home videos to watch if you were bored as a kid in the nineties, but now you have so many streaming platforms to choose from for your favorite shows.

Here in San Diego back in the day, there was a small video rental chain called Video Library. Blockbuster soon put them out of business.

When my mom got remarried to my stepdad in 2001, we moved into a much bigger house, which had a Blockbuster five or so blocks away, and would rent movies constantly. Back then, they still had VHS tapes, and I would get weird looks whenever I would rent my favorite movie, "The Secret Garden", again and again... In time, the DVDs and Blu-Rays came, and then came the announcement that the location was closing. We moved out of the area a few years ago, but it's still heartbreaking. Thank goodness for Google Maps where I can go back all the way to 2007 and see it! Now, we are a Netflix family.

I worked at a Busta for 6 years just as Netflix and Redbox were becoming popular. The end of late fees was a nightmare. The company was in constant panic. You could be written up for not up-selling enough popcorn on a Friday night. Sheer corporate hell. I eventually walked out. The store I worked in closed months later.

Their building could be divided into 2 building. Having one a real coffee and real food world shop. The other an automatic videos and book signing, promoted by Blockbuster.

If you were a consumer between the ages of 16 and 50 from 2000 to 2010, a documentary is not required. Late fees and lack of videos were the two biggest issues. Soon we will be getting gouged by the streaming giants with price increases though, so Netflix is not untouchable.
