As you alluded to, vehicles are more than transportation, they also carry our thoughts, our feelings, on good days and on bad. You did not just fix up a hulk of old metal, you brought your Grandad back to life. The Gilroy videos illustrate a wonderful example of what memories are about. A perfect Allegory. This was never just about a car. This was about a man. Your Grandad.
Not something i would normally say about your vids (usually funny comes to mind 😂😂) but what a heartwarming, moving, touching and poignant finish to a brilliant series. Thanks Jon
Thanks Jon. I’m no petrol head, but have thoroughly enjoyed your channel over the last couple of years. I find your videos informative, hilarious and relaxing all at the same time. Happy new year 🥳
Bloody ninjas crept in and started chopping onions again. I can remember both of the cars my grandad bought before he gave up driving sometime in his 70s. A metallic gold Mk.2 Ford Escort Ghia with a vinyl roof, reg no. RLD589R. I went to the dealership with him when he bought it and the salesman warned meabout putting my feet on the new seats. And a "galaxy blue" Mk.3 Escort, reg no. D910FSP. It was supposed to pass to me when I learnt to drive, but I couldn't afford lessons so it went to my aunty and uncle instead.
I remember when I was tiny, crying when our mini with the holes in the floor failed it's MOT. That mini was granddad's too before my mum got it. She traded it in for scrap and got a Citroen AX, and someone got in touch with her for the keys to give it a subsequent life racing.
Imagine thinking 140 miles counts as a road trip. But seriously, great video, hopefully you'll be able to get that error message sorted in short order.
Can I just say your commentary and scripts are amazing, been following for a good few years now and your development of your style has been really great. This was a genuinely beautiful video, and you delivered it with a real emotional resonance. I need to help get the family Audi Quattro back on the road (she made it to Rustival 1 but not much further) as these cars are true cornerstones of our identity. Keep up the great content, you know, you're pretty good at this!
The very best content UA-cam was made for. Thank you Jon for giving me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. It doesn't matter which car maker is your favourite, so good to see Gilroy up and running and back home. Hopefully Gilroy is the reliable dilemma of SAAB or BMW for future road trips.
Butter tubs Jon one of my most favourite roads anywhere, getting in touch with your inner Clarkson whilst honouring your late Grandfather a very touching tribute to him and his car, hope you can put it away until spring comes Thankyou.
Well done Gilroy & Jon. .. I don't think you should worry too much about the maintenance bill Jon. If you're planning on keeping the car for the next 10 years then you've done 10 years of maintenance in one hit.. .. + of course the sentimental value. .. Now you should have confidence to drive Gilroy anywhere.. .. Ok except the gearbox. That might be a faulty connector or low oil . .. I've spent almost much on my Mini cooper S as the purchase price. Not done yet. Gotta do the clutch when the weather improves.... .. But the car is so much fun to drive, with less of the driver aids found on newer cars....
A cliff hanger!...... Jon you're becoming quite the Director/producer, some of the cinematography showing Gilroy in all her splendour was glorious. Well done man.
Lovely story about a lovely car in a fantastic colour, glacier Green. As the owner of an BMW 5 series E39 (2002) and a 190E (1990) it’s inevitable with cars of this age that a bit of mission creep happens, you do one job and find another or something that’s recommended to be changed at the same time. Bottom line is this is a car that means something to you and more than the some of it parts and hopefully this refresh will keep it running for much longer than otherwise it would’ve.. great video Jon!
You should have walked in that Mini dealership and told them; "Somethings wrong here, acording to my guidebook from 1923, this should be a BMW dealer" 😂
I've just spent far, far, FAR too much having what's really a not very popular 1980s car restored. But it's the road trips I plan for it that will make it all worthwhile.
Nice little cliffhanger to finish on, was great to see the car get a new lease of life and get a tour of the best County in the UK! Hope Harrogate wasn't too cold
I have envy about this episode. Only this holiday (christmas 2025) showing my children, photos of my E28, E34 and E39 I have had in the recent past. Wish I had owed an E38 as well.
So many cars get scrapped because the folks that can afford to buy them can’t afford to maintain them, and the cost of non-maintenance just builds until it outweighs the vehicle value. Gilroy deserves to be on the road, and that’s better for the environment than scrapping him and buying something newer. Well done you, and thank you for entertaining me through 2024🫶
Just sold a Merc Vito van that I've had for more than 20 years, with depreciation about £400 a year and no major works needed. It's well worth keeping an older vehicle on the road, new cars come with built in faults.
The conclusion to a wonderful story. I always wanted an E38, they're a regal car and belong the the genertion of BMWs before things went all techy. Hope you look adfter it and it will give you many more miles of pleasure :-)
Now time to take Gilroy to the next level by taking care of those minor bodywork dents and rusty areas….I’m quite certain you can find a shop specifically for that! Happy New Year Jon and looking forward to more shenanigans in 2025 - maybe across the Irish Sea……🤔?
Fantastic platform to restore. I've had multiple e39's of the same vintage and miss them dearly, never driven or even been in an e38 but imagine its another step-up in terms of quality.
Really enjoyed this short series. The only thing that needs doing now is to fix the bodywork issues which look relatively minor but would make all the difference to the outward appearance and also prevent things deteriorating over time, especially on those salty winter roads.
Thanks Jon. You are consistently an ever improving YT presenter and I really enjoy your vids. I will come clean, I am not a petrol head, but I know quality and a cool drive when I see it and feel it. My fav company car was a Beemer 5 Back in 2015 to 2017. For me, Gilroy looks the Mutts and your Grandaddy had bleedin' taste. I still can't get my head around the fact that he coughed up £43 grand in the late 90's for Gilroy. How bloody minted was he? Still, I reckon you will been seen on the odd Summer Sundays taking in the sights across the northern Home Counties in Gilroy....and bloody good luck to you. JOB WELL DONE !!!
Gilroy next road trip needs to be to Dingolfing which I believe is the place where all the automotive parts came together and his creation happened. Happy motoring all what ever your wheels.
"We" will need a coffee and perhaps some breakfast. There was definitely a cameraman in the motorists cafe, and who was filming you from behind? It doesn't matter, except hats off to whoever helped you out on this one. I hope whoever it was and you had a good Christmas, and I look forward to your videos next year.
Harrogate is/was my home town. I left in 1972 to start my life journey. Although there have been major changes over the years, much of your drive through town, still look familiar.
G'day Jon, Thank You for sharing the WONDERFUL story of your Grandpa & Gilroy, all the "Grandpa" references has kept triggering memories of the times I loved spending with my Grandpa too 👴🥰
Nicely done. We've all had unexpectedly big service bills, but you forget those a lot quicker than the joy of driving a special car. All the best for 2025 Jon.
Ah Jon, got me right in the heart towards the end there. Yup, these old cars get under your skin. What was it that Clarkson said as he closed out GT? Something like: Couldn't do this forever, what new cars would we review? They're not cars, they're appliances, white goods.....
A superb finale in every respect. As usual the commentary, editing, filming and all round production was extremely engaging. The choice of music over the final few minutes was also brilliant. Thank you, I enjoyed every nanosecond of it.
A beautiful video the absence of cynicism spoke loudly. I lost my dad exactly a year ago. Guys can't talk about emotions but they can talk about cars and we all knew you were not really talking about your BMW but your grandfather.
Very good finale to the refreshtoration of Gilroy. I think it was well worth all the money on parts. They are beautiful cars from the era of peak BMW design, and they don’t make them anymore.
Thanks for sharing, Jon! I'm happy for you that the series (well the fix-up videos) didn't include more videos. As for me - more Auto Shenanigans, please.
Great stuff. Lovely tribute to your grandfather. My late parents lived for many years in Harrogate and North Yorkshire really does have some of the best countryside in England. Not a patch on Scotland, obviously, but I'm biased.
Glad you got Gilroy home. The Motorist is always worth stopping in for a look around. I fly from the adjacent Sherburn Airfield and often wander over for a look to see what interesting automotive delights are in the carpark. Whether aircraft or car, there is no such thing as a light refreshtoration!
I cannot even remember how I found your channel, all those years ago, but I am immensely pleased that I did. Thank you for sharing this journey and experience with us.
That might just have been the best bit of car TV I've watched since the demise of proper Top Gear, well done sir!
I'll take that. Cheers.
I have acquired the lanyard. Mission complete.
Excellent!
So the BMW 735 finale lasts 7:35? Nice work there
7.36 showing for me 😂
@@everything777 7:35 showing for me.
735 for the car. Plus 1 for Grandpa
7.35 for me too, well spotted 🙂
It's FWikedSweetAwesome!

Agree.
Awesome comment!
Great comment.
Summed up perfectly. Nice one.
My grandad once said "Having a car is like having a dog". He was brilliant and a bit mad.
Not something i would normally say about your vids (usually funny comes to mind 😂😂) but what a heartwarming, moving, touching and poignant finish to a brilliant series.
Thanks Jon
The monologue over the drone shots? Cinema. Well done.
What a lovely way to remember your Grandfather in such a lovely car. Memories are powerful things. It's good to make some new ones as well
Thanks Jon. I’m no petrol head, but have thoroughly enjoyed your channel over the last couple of years. I find your videos informative, hilarious and relaxing all at the same time. Happy new year 🥳
Happy new year mate, thanks a lot!
@4.49 Nice to see the BMW indicators were worth the money!
I didn't think BMW's had indicators?
Bloody ninjas crept in and started chopping onions again.
I can remember both of the cars my grandad bought before he gave up driving sometime in his 70s. A metallic gold Mk.2 Ford Escort Ghia with a vinyl roof, reg no. RLD589R. My grandfather taught me to drive. It was mostly in my father's Orion, so with you on the Mk 3/4 Escort.
❤ The drone shots are beautiful despite the weather.
NFY.
Welcome back Gilroy. Nice to see it back on the roads once again. Such a nice car.
BMW 735i. A car that just keeps giving.
This was not just a car journey, it was a labour of love, and a fitting tribute to your Grandpa, Jon, that you would make Gilroy roadworthy again
Glad Gilroy made it back home. Appreciate the genuine enthusiasm when you got there.
I remember when I was tiny, crying when our mini with the holes in the floor failed it's MOT. That mini was granddad's too before my mum got it. She traded it in for scrap and got a Citroen AX, and someone got in touch with her for the keys to give it a subsequent life racing.

Thanks Grandad, without you none of this would have been possible.
Thanks for sharing again Jon
Finally we have gilroy back again hope it all went smoothly for you!
A fitting tribute to your Grandfather and his favourite Car. 👍🏾👍🏾
Gilroy looking very suave 👌🏼👌🏼

Great to see a peak era BMW getting taken care off. Well done.
Great stuff , I worked at a BMW dealership when the 735 was current , always a pleasure to see them still being enjoyed , you’ve done a great job
Thanks Jon. So good I watched it twice, hope this small gesture helps to avoid financial ruin.
Thanks a lot mate, most kind of you!
You are right Jon, it is beautiful, Yorkshire that is, Gilroy is looking stunning though, very well done to all connected with work involved.
You done the ‘Gilroys’ proud Jon. Thoughtful..
At the end of the trip Gilroy turns to John "can we go home now Dad - I want to go hu - home!"
Kids and cars - break your wallet and your heart!
@03:35 That "...we just don't knowww" was very Mystic Meg in a rare moment of honesty 😹
Loved the final sequence, very nicely done :-)
The very best content UA-cam was made for. Thank you Jon for giving me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. It doesn't matter which car maker is your favourite, so good to see Gilroy up and running and back home. Hopefully Gilroy is the reliable dilemma of SAAB or BMW for future road trips.
Thoroughly enjoyed this mini series, thank you. Grandad would be proud of you.
and to think it was once a BMW series..
A lump in my throat at the end there. Thanks, Jon.
Butter tubs Jon one of my most favourite roads anywhere, getting in touch with your inner Clarkson whilst honouring your late Grandfather a very touching tribute to him and his car, hope you can put it away until spring comes Thankyou.
Well done Gilroy & Jon.

..
But the car is so much fun to drive, with less of the driver aids found on newer cars....
I suspect Grandad would approve. Thank you Jon.
Gilroy is a credit to you and Grandpa worthy of every clicking on that specific button 🙂
Really enjoyed the series, Love seeing a car looked after that many folk would scrap for a sh*tbox crossover
A cliff hanger!...... Jon you're becoming quite the Director/producer, some of the cinematography showing Gilroy in all her splendour was glorious. Well done man.
Brilliant car 👍grandad choose well enjoy
Lovely scenery, glad you made it safely. Lovely way to end the video with you and Grandpa, he would have been proud of what you did
E38 and e39s are solid!
Of course it will make it
Lovely story about a lovely car in a fantastic colour, glacier Green. The car is looking great. Lovely to see the real Gilroy at the end. I’m off to find the like button.
I felt nostalgic after watching.
You should have walked in that Mini dealership and told them; "Somethings wrong here, acording to my guidebook from 1923, this should be a BMW dealer" 😂
Hope you did a quick detour to the buttertubs pass, awesome bit of tarmac, and very scenic
The beemer looks good Jon.
I've just spent far, far, FAR too much having what's really a not very popular 1980s car restored. But it's the road trips I plan for it that will make it all worthwhile.
Well this was absolutely gorgeous. And don't worry about the Trans Failsafe Prog warning.... they all do that, Sir.
You always impress me how you manage to squeeze so much content into a sub ten minute video.
A real labour of love.
Something of your youth that now lives on.
Many dream of finding their first car and restoring it.
Great video, great series, great channel. Thanks very much!
Nice little cliffhanger to finish on, was great to see the car get a new lease of life and get a tour of the best County in the UK! Hope Harrogate wasn't too cold
E38, E39, E46, peak BMW.

Funny, informative and also beautiful film. Great work Jon
Kudos John.
Kudos Grandad.
Well played 👍

I think the E38 is the most beautiful BMW.
Gilroy was worth it.
Thanks, John.

Lovely little tribute - money & time very well spent 😊

Thanks a lot mate appreciate that!
Loved this mini series and visuals at the end were just beautiful. Thanks Jon for some great entertainment throughout 2024.
Thanks a lot mate, appreciate that.

Nice to see the car return to its home great views also

There's always been a sense of familiarity with the place I've found. Not sure what it is.
5:46 almost doesn't look real. Beautiful photography there and good to see Gilroy on the road again.
G'day Jon, Thank You for sharing the WONDERFUL story of your Grandpa & Gilroy, all the "Grandpa" references has kept triggering memories of the times I loved spending with my Grandpa too 👴🥰
Great to hear, thanks for watching :)
Gilroy and your grandfather are very proud and me too what a wonderful tribute to your grandfather greetings from Scotland 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Awww I feel bad for my previous Oceans13 reference about Gilroy now. 😢
Im sure you Grandfather is very proud of what you have done ❤️
Absolutely fabulous video 🎉 My Dad's side of the family are from Harrogate... lovely part of the world.
Its a lovely car, worth the time and money.
Nicely done. We've all had unexpectedly big service bills, but you forget those a lot quicker than the joy of driving a special car. All the best for 2025 Jon.

Thank you for letting me tag along. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Well done, lovely to see. That weather is what I remember of my apprentice days at Uniake Barracks, Royal Sigs college. Even June was like that.
A superb finale in every respect. As usual the commentary, editing, filming and all round production was extremely engaging. The choice of music over the final few minutes was also brilliant. Thank you, I enjoyed every nanosecond of it.

What a fantastic little series. Happy new year to you Jon.
Nice car, nice county. Enjoyed this.
That was a bit lovely Jon. I live in Harrogate and will probably think of Gilroy every time i look at that Mini dealership 👍🏼
I cannot even remember how I found your channel, all those years ago, but I am immensely pleased that I did.
Thank you for sharing this journey and experience with us.
I look forward to seeing Gilroy at ShedFest this year
Take care of it don't beat on it and take it easy and you will be fine.
Such a great journey for you and Gilroy. Thanks for taking us along. 😎
