    • @solouno2280
      @solouno2280 6 місяців тому +1

      Well orcs changed probably in 3e or somewhere on 2e. There are tons of orcs, Tolkien described them as warmongering, spliced, corrupted and sewn together elven/human hybrids. Which makes American expires (they even went west) the best coincidence, specially if you take in count that LotR was inspired in the most racist mythology even made: Nordic one.
      But "game orcs" which appeared in early versións of DnD, dragon quest, animated LotR even Zelda, are pig headed. The "green dumb giant" comes from the UK: Warhammer, fallout, bloodbowl, etc... All from the UK.
      About kobolds, those took me by surprise, I never expected them to be shorter than Halflings amphibian dragons. when all I knew were the shaved mini bears that come from orc wombs filled up with goblin seed which only purpose is to mine for metals and build strongholds.
      5e had tons of changes, 160 cm dwarves, gnomes being taller than Halflings and elves being shorter than humans (which looking at Norse mythology, makes sense, but are opposite to Tolkien's elves of bizarre, tall and elegant appearance) was another "what the heck is going on here? My miniatures are not aligned with the current lore." scenario and my "dwarven giant of 121 cm now just being "average"

    • @johnnygreenface4195
      @johnnygreenface4195 6 місяців тому +1

      @solouno2280 Kobolds in their earliest appearances in D&D have deceiving art so you ended up with the masses thinking there were supposed to be scaled.
      That eventually turned into them just being lizards.
      Folk lore Kobold from myth are more like even more nasty gnomes who would poison and harm miners.

    • @DUNGEONCRAFT1
      @DUNGEONCRAFT1  6 місяців тому

      Thank you for watching!

    • @RoninCatholic
      @RoninCatholic 6 місяців тому

      Kobolds only even having any animal associations at all was a D&D thing to separate them from other types of goblin, as their original folklore is just the local term for a mean prankster spirit (goblin, imp) that distresses miners in particular. Cobalt, the deep blue metal often found in deposits near precious metals, is also called "goblin metal" so _I_ always figured no matter how kobolds look they ought to be _dark blue_ in coloration.
      So far as I know, both them being reptilian _and_ them being associated with dragons is a 3rd Edition thing that was then made permanent, as far as WotC and Hasbro care that seems to be "the start" of D&D. I'd even posit the reptilian elements were just the artists taking liberties with previous editions' dog-like kobolds, then the "they worship dragons" part was added as an extension of the decision to make them reptiles.

    I love the view of orcs as inhuman piglike monsters-it reminds me of Moblins from original Legend of Zelda. I used to love Zelda artwork from the 80s and 90s, and depictions of a huge fat pig Ganon and similarly disgusting Moblins as ganon’s foot soldiers solidified the idea of power as making you greedy as a pig. Also, I’ve always considered pigs and boars frightening because I grew up where wild pigs and boars have always been a problem, and there’s nothing more terrifying than a whole pack of wild pigs descending on a town and smashing into shops or harassing people even in their cars. Even domesticated pigs go feral when they get released into the wild, growing tusks and spiky hair even where none was before.
    While I understand it’s problematic to have unapologetically “evil” races nowadays and everybody needs to have their race be redeemed and everybody’s story to be valid, I think there needs to be an “enemy” faction that is incontestable for game purposes. Usually I use undead or some natural enemies (cordyceps fungus, blighted forest, vampire/werewolf), but there’s nothing so dangerous as the drumbeat of an orc horde. They roll into town, destroying and eating everything they see, and burning/looting everything they can take. I don’t do half-orcs because I house-rule that orcs and humans can’t breed and wouldn’t want to anyway (and I don’t like to bring r*** and SA into the game environment as weapons of war because it’s a red line consent-wise), so that means that orcs always = bad news!

      He has a valid point. The content of the video had absolutely nothing to do with the title. That's a bit different than a hyperbolic clickbait title may sound a little more catastrophic in the actual content tells you but at least it's on target with the conext.

      @@russelljacob7955what’s funny is that UA-cam as a platform is focused on making money for itself - not the talent. As soon as people “hack” the system like this UA-cam will change the rules and it won’t work anymore.

UA-cam views them as failures I’m in their part. Why? So much money went to the creators vs directly to UA-cam. It’s why monetization changed - UA-cam saw too much money going out the door.

    I would say that this room has contributed significantly to TPKs over the decades. But Id say the kobold cave has claimed more lives in my groups. Players often find themselves facing 40 kobolds. Usually because the party wants to go straight for the Caves of Chaos without any side quests to level up. So 6-9 1st levels go walking right into the kobold cave, they handily kill the ones outside, get past the guards, decide kobolds are just a annoyance…. Sometimes get their butts handed to them by the 16 giant rats…but then they enter the main chamber and kick the hornets nest. By the time they realize they might be over their heads they are deep in the room getting mobbed by 40 kobolds. TPKs have happened in a single round. Eventually they lean from this room. By the time they get to the Orc cave they have learned to not get sucked in.

    I really like what "The Monster Overhaul" has to say about orcs: They're either irredeemable monsters or people like anyone else, and shouldn't be anything in-between. In my games orcs are pig-faced people, and most of the ones seen around are raiders because their homeland is a continent across a small sea. One of my players is actually an orc, who ended up in the continent thanks to a series of unfortunate kidnappings and rescue attempts.

    Our rogue snuck up to the heads and noticed one was gone, stuck his head in he hole only to see an orc with raised axe trying to add HIS head to the collection.🪓 The Rogue made his roll, so he pulled his head out just in time. It was a really fun interaction😆 . They fared better than most it sounds like since they surprised and fire-bombed the first room (7) while the guard gathered the others from Rm 8. Defeated most of that group before the Chieftain came with the rest (used the timer die). Then the fighter challenge the Chief to 1-on-1 combat, which of course took place a suspension bridge (added to spice up the terrain). After trading blows the rest of the party cut the bridge and the fighter and chieftain made there saves but the Chieftain ultimately fell to his death. 💀

    i solved the "those aren't Orcs. those are green elves." issue in my setting by separating Orc the monster and Orc the playable race from each other. In my setting "Orc" is a layperson's generic term for any bipedal, fleshy monster they might have to defend their farm or village from (Goblins, Ogres, Orogs, Giants, Cyclopses etc.) Orcs in the Monster Manual, they are Half-Orogs and look like the classic pig-man art. Orcs and half-orcs as a player option with the modern green muscle-Elf look? In my setting those are not Orcs. Those are Hito from the Empire of Tokudan.
