Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle Build: Day 1

- The design of this kit is somewhat based on the historic work of Joseph Whitson from Western North Carolina.
I’ve never built a rifle, let alone from a kit. I’m not necessarily one to attempt such an undertaking as the idea of destroying a grand worth of parts causes me pause. The Jim Kibler kit here (a birthday gift from my wife) sat for over a year and a half as I waited for the right time and gumption to attempt it. Luckily or better said, blessed I was to have a good friend from the Muzzleloader group take me under his wing to give me the necessary instruction on various techniques, cautions and methods, true wisdom on the fitting and putting together of a flintlock. He’s a true gunsmith, who typically shapes the most beautiful rifles from raw timber, barrels and parts - all by hand. He applauded the Kibler kits, the ease of assembly, and boy the little guide jig for the drill. The perfection of these kits is remarkable and there is no competition I believe. If there’s anything close to this in historic accuracy, precision detail, fit, and quality, do share. The process was captured as much as possible on video, if anything for my benefit and those close to me so as to follow it again in building more kits from Jim Kibler Longrifles.
Enjoy these shots of the other days work and thanks for being a part of Folk Firearms Collective channel. Keep these traditions and history alive.@kiblerjim #flintlock #muzzleloader
We tremendously appreciate all of your support over the years. The Folk Firearms Collective is a husband and wife team comprised of Denny Ducet and Alina Aldobrando. Our goal is to preserve the passion, art, culture and traditions of the blackpowder community and the adventurous history behind it. Should we fail to immerse ourselves and educate each other in this rich history, posterity will wither and cease, leaving the younger generations to never experience the joy of such times. Join us as we disconnect from all the modern noise and chaos.
To support our channel, please feel free to become a channel member and gain access to exclusive content. All proceeds go to powder, ball, and associated accoutrements featured in our videos.
We humbly thank the Flathead Valley Muzzleloaders Club for their dedication to this craft, the land on which we shoot, and most importantly-their willingness to partake in this preservation of history. Of all the folks we’ve been honored to spend time with, these gents and gals are the greatest of our friends. We are forever grateful for their influence and education in our own lives through the course of our traditional muzzleloading journey.

For those thinking the sight is “backwards”:
The man assisting me is renowned longrifle maker. I have a custom hand made Jacob Dickert and it’s the similar blade, same install. Find me a southern mountain rifle different. Every blade I’ve seen is this way.

Nice Video , thanks for posting . I learned something just from watching your skilled use of the Hand tools . It’s helpful to watch guys with your experience and Skills . It gives us layman the confidence to do it ourselves and it is good to know I can always come back and see how you did certain things . Thanks very much for posting 👍
Fine looking kits made not far from where I live. I can’t wait to get one myself.
Gives you a real appreciation for the old gun makers and their craft. Good demonstration, thanks
A very nice job and Thanks for sharing your work on this Lovely Kibler! I do indeed want to buy one! Many Blessings and Good Shootin! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
At 16.01 - simple but logical tool for setting center on the drill-press...never too old to learn...!!!
thanks for the new video! i started my # 14th Kibler kit 2 days ago,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Excellent. If you have any tips for others or tricks share away.
I really want one of these but with money being tight as it is, trying to justify one at the moment, but there isn't a muzzleloader I want more right now than a Kibler.
I did a .36 cal Kibler SMR myself. First time doing it, it’s definitely rough but I tell myself SMR’s are supposed to be rough lol. Wonderful rifle.
Hey, I just got myself a Traditions KY Long Rifle Flintlock kit, and I can't wait to build that rifle and go hunting with it this year! I've been really into traditional firearms lately.
And I thought my shop was cluttered. I don't feel so bad now lol... But I'll be he knows where everything is. I got to get me one of those kits but in 40 cal. I love a 40 cal.
I'm glad to see the ol fella enjoys Snyder of Hanover pretzels as I saw the bag in the bench.
Not only do you Montana folks enjoy shooting guns design and built historically from the east coast, you enjoy the food too!
I grew up in Hanover PA. The roots run deep!
You can't go wrong with one of these kits, they are really guns in the white and only need finishing touches to complete, but it is nice to add personal touches like patch box different ramrod pipes and nose cap just to make it your own special rifle, nice to see you using a good bench support in you well equipped workshop. Enjoy finishing it. Chris B.
Best kits there are in my opinion.
I just finished a Colonial rifle kit by Kibler, top quality, and even with my meager skills I turned out a beautiful rifle
I’d love to see it.
Gene is one of the top builders in the country. We worked together at Serengeti Rifles, then he went on as the builder for Kilimanjaro Rifles. His BPCR and dangerous game rifles are works of art. I found it amusing Gene is back at the huffing and puffing to blow away chips, as he had got pretty happy using an air hose instead!
Great Video I watch from Germany
Thank you for this. Trying to soak in all that I can before I start building my first kit.
Can’t wait to hear how yours goes and see it!
It's amazing how nicely set up these kits are. I replaced the lock on my CVA Mountain Rifle with an L & R lock, and you took less wood out of that Kibler putting that lock in then I had to remove off that CVA to install my L & R lock.
Aint nothing like watching Redfern.Groves in building a beautiful rifle. Thanks for sharing your video.
Most welcome! Thank you.
It is nice to see a seasoned builder's results on the Kibler Mountain Rifle kit. This is a beautiful well balanced rifle to build. AJL
Great video. Looks like some skilled hands on those chisels. Thanks for letting us come along.
Glad you enjoyed it
I’ve got a .45 cal one in cherry that Jim built in the white. Can’t believe how light it is.
These rifles are the best ever offered!
100%
Just tuned in. Happy to see this premiere!
Greetings friend.
MORE!
Great Video very informative. I have someone making Kibler SMR 36 cal I should be getting it next week cant wait. When will your next video be posted?
Ok, may finally have the funds together and looking at the Southern Mountain Rifle, I've never built a kit, but no stranger to woodwork and filing. Have the tools but how hard was it to assemble this and how good are the instructions. My biggest concern from what I can see is drilling out the spots for the pins and I don't have a drill press, just a drill.
We didn’t use a drill press for the pins. The instructions are superb and Kibler also has instruction videos on every step. I tried to show much of the way we did it here as well. Go slow, be patient and you’ll be fine friend. It was not hard. Use a candle or “eye shadow” or inletting black. The ram rod pipes were what took probably the most work fitting. Just mark them each 1-2-3 and keep them oriented the same way every time as you go. We filed one notch, two notches or three notches depending what pipe it was. The spine of them had to be filed down some which is normal. Use a piece of dowel the thickness of the ram rod or the rod itself to check the alignments of them as you fit them. Watch the video hear again showing how we drilled and you’ll see the jig Kibler sends is remarkable. Let me know how it goes.
jealous lol. Enjoy
You should have asked him how he lost the tips of his two fingers there...
Fort Polk!!
Believe it or not, his mule shot him. He had been out hunting, leaned his buffalo rifle against a tree. Mule knocked it over, half cock notch broke, and there went the fingers! Gene is also a musician and singer, and it kind of cramped his guitar playing style for awhile.
I have some workshop jealousy going on
Do I need a drill press for the barrel pins?
No. It’s easy. Kibler sends a guide and the bits.
@@FolkFirearmsCollective yeah I got a different rifle. traditions Kentucky rifle cap and ball. Still good to know thanks appreciate it🙏
If you keep the bits straight and take your time you’ll be fine! Have fun. I’m looking forward to a Kibler Hawken kit supposedly in the works!
@@FolkFirearmsCollective thank you so much man you’ve been he’s been more than a helping hand with that little bit info. I took it to a gunsmith a weak back dude what is so goddamn unhelpful. wanted to charge damn near as much as the rifle kit
@@duncanrumsey5311 you can get the the drill kit from Kibler
