    you can go into personalize and have each project's samples in that project's folder instead of having them all bunched up in the audio pool...

    Does the OT have quantised cropping, as in, edit a sample to have a length of exactly 4 bars?
    In my case, I wonder if I can export full length stems, import them into the OT and then chop them into 4 bar loops to put them into patterns? Or must I chop all the stems into short 4 bar loops to then import and put them in their own patterns?

      Are you going dawless by replacing the daw with an Octatrack? Just curious cuz I’m considering this too

      @@Tapepusher Great question. Long answer incoming. I guess I've had 4 years to think about this. :O
      My own experience is that I mess around with Elektron products and then years later read the label on the face. I tried to make the Digitakt a sampler and then read "Drum Computer" and that's what I landed on as its role.
      The Octatrack is a performance mixer and I think its sweet spot is a mangler. It can be used to make sets of original music and I have made 2x 1hour sets that end up being very different than something I would make in a DAW. But these creations follow a grid and have a dance-electro-techno sort of quality because of the trigs and grid. Making a track in the DAW is something I would do to make a song, something that supports singing and lyrics. A DAW as tape can also have a grid but it sort of behaves differently. You can use them both but whatever the OT3 is will probably be a better flow. You can move samples back and forth but it's clunky. So I end up with tunes in the OT and came from the OT because its so unique.
      The OT is just weird. I can't explain it. It took me a year to get it and I found everything I could on it. Then I just tried stuff for a long time. Does it replace the DAW? It does when I'm trying to make sort of a DJ set or do something really weird with a sample. I can't really get the same effect without a ton of MIDI mapping or automation even in Bitwig.

    You have to create the trigs ... then use random or linear locks.

    Just about to buy an octatrack, mad video dude! Just wondering, theoretically, could you use this method to take the track you produced in ableton, sort of remix and play the track as you are recording back into ableton, and then mix/master in ableton from there and have the track be synonymously produced within ableton and the octatrack? ☺️
    Also, is there a way to split the tracks into individual layers for recording into a DAW, or would I have to record each layer back into ableton individually?

    what i have seen in this video, is the most complicated way to play samples and slices in a box which cost 1200$. Couldn't it be done much easier bringing all these samples into a set of tracks in session view clips combined with simpler slicing devices and having push2 for modifiying the step sequences on the fly for live playing of these slices? Or did i missed something essential?

  • @lwpweb

    Hello! Do you know a tutorial that tells how when we put a wav file in Octatrack, we can play it in its own duration? I can only hear 16 steps right now. What I want is to be able to play all of them if the wav is 3 minutes or 6 minutes.Thank you!

    Ahhh James thank you mate! Just the info I was looking for :) I'm on the fence as to whether I just stick with Ableton or invest in an Octatrack Mk 1. I've been watching/reading endless content online trying to understand the process of how I would take my stems from Ableton and perform them on the OT. It was really helpful to hear/see you describing your workflow.
    My stems (loops) are up to 1 minute long (32-64bars). I've learned that you can play longer loops with the OT but I still can't find the answer to if they can be played as seamless loops while I jam over top with my synths. Can you (or someone else reading this) please answer that question for me?
    I'm going to watch this YT clip again in case i've missed some stuff and also check out Part 2. Thanks for doing these tuts. :)

      probably you've figured this out by now but in case still helps you or anybody else, yes you can. Double click on the SRC button to open the track setup, then switch the first option Loop to on. Then you set a one-shot trig at the beggining of the patter. this wil fire your track and keep it looping until you re arm your trigger or until you move to a different patter and another trigher triggers that track.

    • @1samwhich
      @1samwhich Рік тому +1

      @@korboira1729 Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment. Yep worked it out in the end. What you said and also extending the length of the pattern scale to 64/64 using Function + Page changing it to 64/64. But then I realised the small fraction thingy next to the 64/64 that you can change. I dropped that to 1/4x and that got me to where I wanted to be.
      Thats interesting about how the loop will keep playing automatically even when not retriggered. While jamming, I've had a couple a tracks keep playing through when I switch to the next song which made it sound like I was mixing stems but I didn't realise what was happening haha. Of course when I triggered the new sample in the same track as the one that carried through, it changed/took over. Nice feature! I'll be using that for sure in my performances once I finally get enough content together.
      Cheers mate!

      Agree - spending so much time focussed in the Ableton session when I would like to see what he is referencing on the hardware. Informative but could have been a bomb if he had swapped back and forth some.

    Haven't watched the video fully yet, but sharing the ideas I have to the moment, not to forget.
    Instead of using parts you can as well parameter lock the sample on step one of every track. This removes some of the limitations.
    Parts then can be utilized as sets of effects. For example one part with Filter and Reverb on all FX slots, another part with delays, etc.
    Another hint would be to just render full stems including silence, then split them into 4-bar slices on Octatrack and trigger the specific slice (reference the ableton arrangement to see slice number). You wont be using as much sample slots in your sample pool then.

    • @jameswilson9191
      @jameswilson9191  6 років тому +2

      You're right, you can... And I thought I mentioned that -- or atleast I meant to! -- but the hassle with using a parameter or sample lock is that you have to set that same lock each time you want to override the sample, and it doesn't show that the sample is being overridden by a parameter lock in the main display which can make it a little confusing.

      Thank for giving me a interesting idea 💡, as I have my liveset ready in ableton, it would be. Interesting to in example export separate clips from first ableton's track later connect them in one audio track and later process them in OctaChainer, import to Octatrack and use the parameters lock on patterns.

  • @aboogiefpv1943
    @aboogiefpv1943 6 років тому +1

    What you were looking for was Create Random Locks not Create Linear Locks. Also, lay the triggers out before you choose that option.

    • @jameswilson9191
      @jameswilson9191  6 років тому +2

      Aboogie FPV , not having the triggers on was the issue. That’s needed whether you want linear locks (play sample slices in order) or random locks (play sample slices in random order). Thanks for watching!

    never saw a tutorial which shows nothing whats really going on, i f.e. use my octatrack to start and stop clips in ableton on various tracks, thats work but just limited to 8 clips per track.
