    Tip - Put your CCTV on a separate VLAN, with the camera ports presenting the VLAN as untagged, so it is separate from your main LAN, to prevent someone taking a camera off the wall and accessing your main network..

    If indoor dome cameras can go outside, could I also set my PC rig outside and run a cable inside so the case gets more Airflow ?? I think this could help the equipment by having the pc in the garden with better airfllow. Thanks for the solid info here.

    Your dome may not last long there. It needs to be very close up under an overhang if it's going to be outdoors.

    • @matthewmcmullan9669
      @matthewmcmullan9669 6 років тому +1

      No it doesn't, domes can be fitted any where you like. If you fit a dome under the soffit all you end up with is a really crappy view of heads and full of spiders

    • @smccrode
      @smccrode 6 років тому +2

      matthew mcmullan Of course, you can put anything anywhere you'd like. But, the actual product manual from Ubiquiti says to put it up under the eave or a protection of some sort. Being 10 feet under the eave does not meet that requirement. Hence, my comment.

  • @JS2Tango
    @JS2Tango 6 років тому +7

    The dome camera isn't fully weatherproof, and is only recommended to be installed outdoors below an overhang, not in the middle of a wall as you've installed it.

      theshooter2013 Not necessarily, domestic CCTV systems are not covered by the Data Protection Act. If a complaint is made, the police can ask if the camera could be moved. But no law is being broken if its for Domestic and personal security use.

    If someone rips one of your cameras off the wall and plugs in a laptop, they have instant access to your whole network because you didnt subnet the IP cameras. Please research your equipment before trying to tell others about it.

  • @Max34557
    @Max34557 6 років тому +13

    It might be a good idea to isolate all the security cameras on their own VLAN with no internet access. That way if someone somehow manages to take a camera off your exterior wall and plugs a laptop in, they won't have access to your entire network and such.

    • @HyRax_Aus
      @HyRax_Aus 6 років тому +1

      Not "might be a good idea", it IS what you do (not even "should"), or you're just asking for trouble!
      Sadly, it's something a lot of people forget about with good custom setups because most out-of-the-box solutions like Hikvision already prevent network bridging at the NVR.

    The G3 Dome isn't rated for outdoor use. You'll likely have issues with condensation in the casing. They're only really for indoor or outdoor in a sheltered location, under canopy etc..

  • @millergram
    @millergram 6 років тому +33

    Couple known issues here.
    - Cameras are way too high. You're going to get the top view of vehicles, people, etc.
    - You pronounce ethernet wrong. It doesn't matter where you live. You're pronouncing it wrong.
    - Network Cabinet is in the wrong location. Bring it downstairs to your house's ambient temperatures. Your attic space is too hot to house your equipment up there. The life of your equipment is cut in half when it's experiencing hot conditions.

    Not sure if you are wanting to I'd people coming and going, but at that height you will most likely not get a good look at someone's face. Should mount something near face level especially near entrances. Just my 2 cents from doing many installs. It doesn't look the greatest, but that's where low profile comes in, and you want to make sure you catch someone. Cameras mounted high are great for observations, and adding detail.

      Tom Peters I've built a few systems for friends, the way to go is building a dedicated computer/server that will run blue iris. That way you can utilize the high power of desktop components, and you can make it as simple/intense as you want. You can have raid, hot swap bays, battery backup and redundant psu's like I did, or you could even just use an old laptop. The software is about $50, but it allows you Incredibly glandular controls of motion triggering, and it allows you to use cheap $50 cameras from China with absolutely no issue.
      All in all, read up into blue iris, it is by far the best option

    Good video but very bad placement of cameras. You want them a maximum of 10 feet from the ground. Doesn't matter that people can perhaps get to them or smash them because as long as you have set them up correctly then you will catch the person's face before they do all of that and that is the important thing here, getting good enough quality video capture so it can be used to catch the criminal. Also take a look at EZVIZ cameras. Basically the consumer range of HikVision. Very good cameras and NVR.

    Wired “effernet”...... u can pick up half decent wireless equipment for a fraction of the cost. Just make sure u have adequate network security. Also means no drilling walls, ceilings etc and spending hours running cabling around your house. Then when you move home it’s just a power source to unplug. Otherwise you have to remove all the cables, fill holes etc etc etc... go wireless.

    • @SurfThomasVD
      @SurfThomasVD 6 років тому +2

      Sandy Nicholls wireless cctv isn’t as good as wired equipment. It less stable, video quality is worse. If you need to drill for power cables why not just install cat5 cabel.

    • @vidfreak83
      @vidfreak83 6 років тому +1

      While I agree that wireless isn’t as good as wired, I don’t think that wired is around 10 times better and therefore can’t justify 10 times the cost. I have a wireless system with 4 external cameras and 5 internal as well as 2 motion sensors. This is quite a basic setup but all my images would stand up in a court of law or for insurance purposes as external points of entry and internal entry points are covered and anyone can be easily identified. Shopping around this setup has cost me approx £350 for the cameras and around £100 for the sensors. All I am saying is that if your on a bit of a budget or uncomfortable with mains electrics and associated wiring then wireless is an option. Also with cat 5, you have the wiring visible or have to hide behind box conduit. And ultimately like I said, if you decide to move home you literally unplug and setup again as new

    • @vidfreak83
      @vidfreak83 5 років тому

      @@cinnamondonkey2397 I never said wireless wasn't more secure than wired.... I'm just saying that it's all well and good doing systems like this if money is no object but not everyone has that luxury as well as maybe in rented it shared accommodation. Further more you have a wired connection to the install location in the house but everything else is wireless so you can just be hacked that way. Also, everyone here had better get go back to writing letters because I would pretty much better my last pound that at lease 75% if the users are accessing through a wireless device if some sort so by default, you are all being hacked... And if your security is that good that you are not, then you can do wireless... But at the end of the day nearly every company in the world has been hacked or DOS.
