- Finally we got an awesome new AR app that can teach you how to play the piano! PianoVision is so far the best VR Piano App I have ever tried! You can connect your physical keyboard to your Quest 2 using a USB cable and it helps the app track precisely the keys you are hitting. Passthrough works like a charm! This is what the future of VR learning looks like.

The simple fact it waits for you to play each note correctly before continuing, makes this more powerful than all other teaching apps I've seen 😍🎹
I know, I can't get over it! It makes ALL the difference
This may be the perfect way to introduce my Wife to VR as she is learning the piano (then it's one easy step from there into gaming muahaha >:)
Hahaha do it!!!
Dream is healthy...
My thoughts exactly.. How's your progress on that? I've just got the app and will also start with this evil plan. Muahaha (2)
😂😂😂😂😂😂... he tryna turn his wife out.
4:05 One of the reasons you don't see this sort of software being used to teach piano is because it doesn't actually teach you to correct your mistakes, but to pause and then work through them. It would be a much better learning tool if instead of waiting for you to fix the mistake, it reversed by a couple of bars to let you play what leads up to where you made the mistake so the proper muscle memory is reinforced.
Another issue with this is that it doesn't properly teach you how to play in time since there's no negative feedback if you wait too long before playing the next note. In classical music (as well as many other genres of music) you often see something called rubato, which is when the beat isn't robotic like following a metronome, but instead it is pushed and pulled. (Look up Arthur Rubinstein's recordings of Chopin's Nocturnes if you want to see what I mean.) I think the most apt solution which would both teach the player to follow the beat to some degree while also allowing rubato would be to reverse by a couple bars if you wait any longer than 1.5 seconds before playing the next two notes, then pausing this timer until the player starts playing again.
You also address the topic of memorization, though I think this is a simple fix: Split the piece into smaller sections (e.g. roughly 20-30 bars depending on the length of the piece,) and then show the notes of about four bars at a time, then let the player memorize the four bars without scrolling through the piece. Once the player is ready, they are tested on the four bars for accuracy without being shown the notes. Afterwards, they are shown the same four bars like when they were still memorizing, but wrong notes that were played are highlighted in red. Then the player goes through the next four bars and so on until a comprehensive test is ran for the entire section. Once all sections of the piece are learned, you are tested on the entire piece.
And finally - though I think this is the least of the issues - you aren't really taught how to read sheet music. You're certainly shown sheet music, but once again there is no negative feedback for just ignoring it. Not to mention you miss out on what many consider to be crucial information: dynamics and tempo indications, which are the two elements that allow you to interpret how a piece of music is to be played. One solution to this is to have a mode dedicated to teaching the notes on the staff in addition to the corresponding keys, then testing the player on which notes correspond to which keys on the piano. This mode could also be adapted to teach the 24 natural major and minor scales in addition to other scales. Dynamics and tempo indications could be shown in the standard mode above the keyboard, or simply spoken by a narrator.
Overall, I think this has quite a lot of potential to be an extremely useful learning tool and it could be great for many pianists who have gave sheet music an honest try and still prefer synthesia like myself. Thank you for the demonstration
You can loop segments of a song.
You're just wrong, and that's okay. :)
You should send this feedback to the app creator. Would really appreciate it
I hope this one will teach the students basic theory.
This is awesome … imagine when vr glasses have a smaller form factor and stronger AR vision … it’s going to be a multi million dollar app .. I hope they stick with it
I have been trying to learn piano and I think this is great! It wont make me a concert pianist but I will be able to learn some songs and have fun. Learning to play songs take so long and I get fustrated and bored and lessons cost a fortune! This could definately be the start of piano and even music lessons in the future!
Awww your reaction at 6:45 is so heart warming to see. I've been playing with this app since Q3 launch and I absolutely love it. My memory is shocking but being able to play is blowing my mind, and it does make you feel really good inside. Thanks for this lovely video 👏.
This is amazing! As a piano player myself, I will definitely have to check this out!! Thanks Tetiana!
You'd REALLY enjoy this app!
I'm also learning the piano and I think this might be a great addition to classic piano lessons.
For me, the difficulty lies in the complex nature of posting the possible:
- Reading (and learning) the notes
- Understanding which key to press for a given note
- Finger placement
- Deciding on how to play a note or phrase (and thus press each key properly)
PianoVision might ease this process because one might focus on one specific aspect. Need to give it a try, thanks for making a video about this app! :)
I know I'm a bit late to respond here, but I tried this on my new quest 3 and with the new passthrough features, it works fantastic and I have played piano for many years and can read sheet music, but I still found using this app fun and challenging. I also tried playing some songs I know from memory while using the concert hall view and that was a bit disorienting and I made many mistakes as the finger tracking wasn't always perfect, but still very fun!
I am buying the Quest 3 just so I can get access to this piano vision. I'm so excited to learn sheet music and play pieces i wouldn't otherwise know about and upload my own custom songs!! I CANT WAIT!
Now that's a proper use of AR! 😎
Wow, this video just inspired me to order a midi Casio keyboard so I can try it out! Thanks!
Haha awesome!
I've been trying to learn the Piano for three years now, not doing well, but not giving up, this may help.
I play piano and this looks like a lot of fun to play around with. Very cool . Thank you for the review video
Looks awesome!
Oh wow! This is incredible 😮😍
You should try it! :)
The future of AR is so bright! I wonder what other AR apps will be a big hit once we get colorful passthrough? Until then, enjoy PianoVision! - sidequestvr.com/app/10223/pianovision --- also here is an inexpensive MIDI Keyboard: amzn.to/3PhhyEu
This is just fantastic, bring on the Cambria! Great video, thank you for this. 😁
That's super cool. Oh my gosh the children. They'll learn so fast with that AR app.
I love this! I do read music, but self-directed learning on the piano can be kind of difficult when it comes to determining fingering. Depending on what pieces are available (can you also add your own sheet music?) and how good the app is at determining fingerings, this could be so helpful. And then you can move to playing from the sheet music and practicing outside of AR. Very cool.
TRY THIS WITH THE QUEST 3 PLEASE
I watched your VRtuos video only very recently and downloaded the app with the intention of dragging my electronic keyboard out of storage and finally learning how to play it...now I'm re-enthused, but also wondering if my keyboard has a USB port...looking at this app, it might make me seriously consider an upgrade and commitment to practice if not. Even with the limitations of hand tracking, the features of the app make it look ready to take advantage of the next generation of headsets that are nearly upon us...exciting times!
My thoughts exactly! I can’t wait to try an app like this with a quality colors passthrough. So many possibilities!
I am going to pick up my hobby as well ! thank you very much
Cool! Love how some developers experiment with the passthrough options, ok not the best quality and black and white but still very nice! I think in education and in medical situations vr and ar are a great source.
You had me smiling the entire video.
Cool app! My guess would be that it is harder to memorize pieces if you always have to play the piece from A to Z instead of repeating phrases at will until they "stick". Also having a teacher in the beginning could help that one doesn't have to un-train bad habits later on. But looks like a fun way to stabble into the topic and just start playing!
Agreed! I would love some guidance, but just imagine what a cool aid this app can be in learning!
yes it would be cool if had some features like rocksmith where you can riff repeat, and master mode where the notes start to dissappear off the screen as you master certain parts, lots of potential here.
Would be a cool feature to draw in the air to rewind or tap a button that goes back x seconds in the piece. Would be very streamlined.
Who can afford piano lessons?
@@ineedhoezsome students give lessons that are not so expensive and still very helpful
Also, If you dont have an MIDI capable piano (example: acoustic piano) you can turn off learning mode which makes the song play with or without u touching the notes, so its still nice to use even if you cant connect it and its still possible to play songs
Was just about to start working on a free/open-source app with most of these features but using a webcam rather than VR, which seems superfluous. Hadn’t seen this before, so it’s neat to see my ideas aren’t so bad!
I'll give you credit for thinking about it, next idea just act on it.. you don't know how little things can change big things!
now i want a piano, great video
Thanks for sharing, I’ll finally be able to practice and play binks sake
This looks awesome, can't wait to try it out!
Thanks!
😍 thank YOU so much! 🙏
I will have it. 🙏🏼!!! After so long playing the piano and have lessons and can’t still do nothing. 😖
It’s my last chance 🙏🏼👍🏼🎹💜
This is perfect for the new Meta Quest Pro with better and color cameras… wow amazing…
The thing that's cool with this is, if you get good at the game and your reflex gets better you can show off and look like a total boss Infront of friends and family because they are not seeing what you see and even if they try they can't be as fast as you because you had practice
Haha that’s true, I’ve already done that 😅
I love this kind of AR usage. Very good video ^^
Right? Isn’t this what vr/ar was made for? 😍
@@DiscoVRTetiana Thats perfect 🥳
Definitely gonna have to check this one out!
This is pretty cool, I play piano myself but am a bit rusty though the Quest Passthrough is not very good, it'd be better to do it all in vr but I understand the constraints and appreciate the app very cool.
It looks really good!
Let's get back to this when project Cambria comes out
An excellent app for mixed reality. I only buy VR games/apps from Steam and can't find it there. Hope it will be offered there in the future.
Can’t wait to see this on the quest 3
It’s incredible
That is insane
Learning piano has never been easier!
100%!
That's amazing 👏
Wow, this looks fun! I’m hoping it can be used with a MIDI keyboard that has fewer than 88 keys, as mine does. I would definitely look into this as a way to re-learn two handed piano pieces. And wow, I would love to be able to choose my own music. I’m itching to learn some of the themes from the Mass Effect Trilogy.
Yes! During the calibration step it will automatically detect the size of your keyboard, it can definitely be fewer than 88 :) also on their discord they have a channel for links to download MIDI songs from, you might find what you’re looking for there!
@@DiscoVRTetiana Oh wow that’s so cool! Thanks! ❤️
Very nice app 👌
whoa!! This is totally happening.
Will give it a try later 👍
Ohh thank you, i didnt know this game exist. Hitmotion is another good one
Wow 😳
Great video... just what I was looking for.
This is the best VR piano app you reckon?
can you use this on a standard piano without usb connections?
This is truly amazing! Can you do an updated video with the quest 3 ? I wonder how better it is
Well, passthrough is in color and perhaps less fuzzy. But the rest of the functionality would be the same.
Great video! Sorry if asked already - is it possible to connect a classic piano, so without usb connection?
This is really cool, look, the VR inventors have developed a new VR use case, hopefully we can be VR pianists hahahaha!
And you can already do that AR piano thingy on quest 2 with piano vision…damn it’s gonna be so much better with that lidar sensor in front!!
Oh yessssss 🤩
This is so awesome
Hi thanks for the review. Is it free?
Yup! It's free
Awesome app, thanks for this video. Can you do another video where do you explain how to upload MIDI song on the app? I'm really curious ;)
just got this and ive got a midi to usb c cable... will it work... ill find out when im home
Is there a way to charge my quest 3 while I have the midi interface connected? Like a pass through usbc adapter?
Very cool 😎👍
Amazing
isso no Quest3 vai ficar sensacional :O
May I ask which one is the cheapest VR Device to use this software?
I bought the software based on your recommendation but Carol of the Bells is not there😢
It will makes you memorized the song because of the muscle memory. So... Just play it more and more, and suddenly, you realized you can play it with closed eye. :D
Hi there. I’m busy learning piano as well. Can you tell me what VR headset you are using. Thank you
This is Meta Quest 2, link in the description! :)
Does this work with piano?very intriguing though!
very cool
Any suggestions for a cheapish piano that's compatible with this?
Will this work with a wireless blueooth midi conncetion ?
my keyboard doesnt have the usb b thing so i dont know what to do, i want to connect it to my quest though
Is it on app lab or the regular store?
I have a key board with the round usb connects, not sure if that works.. Thank you so much for sharing.
It'll work with an adapter :)
Does it wait for you in AirPiano mode as well? You know for acoustic pianos
Yes it does wait for you, but I found tracking to be not so good, so I preferred to stay connected with a USB cable
Hi. Is anyone tried to run this app on another headset with hand tracking ? Like Pico 4 etc ? Thanks !
So far I don’t think this app has been posted on Pico YET but I think it will happen in the future!
Could someone who is using this app and having good results let me know, what brand/type of headset is good for this? (and what your experience has been)
The quest 3 passthrough is really good. It’s in full color. It’s a bit grainy/fuzzy but, it’s vastly superior to other VR headsets on the market and its price is around $500 USD.
@@TylerLL2112 thanks
how to upload own music sheet/midi to this amazing app?
Where is the side quest vid recording?
In the description, and also here it is - ua-cam.com/video/5GAnIuJRwnI/v-deo.html
Do you have to use a real keyboard or is there a virtual one as well?
There is an option to play on a flat surface with a virtual keyboard!
What’s a “yousb connection”?
This could get modded like Rock Smith for an abundance of songs, think about all the Game of Thrones songs that could be playable down the road.
This app supports midi uploads, so you can just add any MIDI files and learn how to play them right off the bat :) no need for modding
@@DiscoVRTetiana makesme want quest 3 even more.
If you don't know how to play then who's piano is that?
I want to see this on the quest pro. It has way better AR.
Having grown up with 3 years of private piano lessons as a kid, I would be a bit hesitant to recommend this to someone new who really wanted to learn piano the correct way... only because this seems to be, as stated in the video, more of a memory challenge and guitar hero like experience. Don't get me wrong, I think the tech is VERY cool and I'm sure there's a LOT of fun to be had... but creating bad habits is usually caused at the start of learning something new when not being taught correctly. If you just want to have fun, sure, this is cool, if you are serious about learning piano, I'd say Invest in at least 6 months to a year of lessons, then have fun with this...
You're completely right, but this does show a new way of teaching piano. If this would cover the basics you'd normally would learn with taking classes or selfstudy, I do see the advantage of learning how to play piano in VR. But besides this, it's just a very fun program to mess around with :)
I want to learn to play songs from animes, is possible to download lessons for those songs?
yes absolutely! You can upload your own MIDI songs, I even made a tut about it - ua-cam.com/video/NcjMRoQiEW8/v-deo.htmlsi=4fCCjwLPJGXrqkax
I can't align the virtuals keyboard perfectly with real one.. there's about a half keylength difference. Anyone else having the same issue or even better, a fix? :)
Where can I buy this
this is going to sound incredibly dumb (i am not a musician) but I bought a midi keyboard, set it up with the quest 2 and it is midi only, no headphone and it doesnt make noise. I can see in the app that I am pressing keys (lights up pink like in the video) but since the keyboard is only connected to the quest I cant figure out how to make the quest make noise when i press the keys on the keyboard. Someone help. I have a Nektar SE49 and it is USB connected to the quest. The quest recognizes it and is calibrated, I can play the songs (it waits for me to hit the correct keys) but doesnt make any noise?
nevermind, found it: n the main menu there is a "midi audio" under audio/visual that must be checked if you are play with a straight midi keyboard that doesnt do any other external output
The Apple Vision Pro should allow you to do this kinda stuff.
Hi is there an app that is just virtual piano with no real piano needed please?
This app has a mode that allows you to play a virtual piano without the real piano needed
@@DiscoVRTetiana Great thanks. Hopefully it will work on my Quest 1 too.
Weird thing is I learned piano for a few years. Only thing I can still play now is a View to a Kill by Duran Duran. 🤣
I think if you start playing again it will all get back to you very quickly! :D
@@DiscoVRTetiana I’m not sure I ever had a back for it tho🤣🤣
My piano teacher used to hit my fingers if I played wrong note 😂
Play rush e with it
that's great...if you HAVE a USB option. thanks for reviewing it for people who don't have a USB piano...or wait, you didn't.
Que loira Maravilhosa + musica ❤
How to upload
I have issues with Facebook for bullying me and constantly banning me over my political and cultural beliefs
Do you know, or does anyone know if this app works on any other devices?
thanks ✌️
