  • Made in 1997 this video starts with a look at ZB operation on Norfolk's Bure Valley Railway the programme then moves counties to Suffolk for a ride behind a 7.25" gauge 'Highlander'. 7.25" locos don't come much bigger than the EAR Garratts and Brett Roger's is shown at work with other locos at Weston Park. Going up a gauge to 9.5" we visit a very busy line built to this rare gauge before being invited to the last day of Peter Howard's Stoneleigh House Railway. The 'temporary' line at Chester Park may still be there but the next section celebrates the opening by Lady Jenny Gretton celebrating the Eaton Hall centenary - many famous miniature railway faces are in evidence. Next its extension time at Wayside - complete with Pullman dining! Topically we then move on to a damp and overcast Comrie before ending the programme at Peter Howard's short lived Downsells line near Sittingbourne. Any comment always welcome, but please remember it was a long time ago now.

Lovely stuff, seeing Heywood in his old original red livery suprised me. Never seen any footage other than rare photos of my favourite 7 1/4 locomotive before her Eastleigh debut!

Amazing how they didn’t think the Chester railway would last more than a couple of seasons, even to modern day it’s still running with a full wooden bridge and permanent crossings in place, really wanna get a steamer running there again

I think the original plan was only for two seasons at the most, but it really caught on with the locals and so it remains to this day.

interesting, that Highlander was a Cockcrow resident for some time and is accredited as being the first Highlander completed.

37.20 "moderate sized garden" - mine would get lost in the station area! lol

Have a look at the first railway on 'Passenger Carrying Garden Railways'. It's Ken Laverty's 5" gauge ground level line round his bungalow near Folkestone - it's quite a small plot, especially at the back but it gives an idea of what can be done in a small area.

It might have been made a long time ago but it's a well made video. Very interesting and informative. I would love to visit these tracks. Especially that strange South African engine. does it have two fires two boilers?

Just the one boiler and firebox. It has water tanks at each end on the powered bogies.

Has anyone got any images of the Peter Howard's railways, especially the diesel that they mentioned on the first clip with Dunalastair. As the majority of the steam loco's featured are present at my railway now including a diesel that we are struggling to find any history on and wondered whether that was the one?

Is the 9.5" gauge line still operating or has it long since closed?

It was a private line and the owner died a month or so ago so not sure what is happening with it at the moment.
