  • The larvae of tiger beetles live in burrows in the soil. Each burrow holds a single larva. The larva has a round-shaped head that fits perfectly in the burrow opening. When a prey animal comes along, the larva pops its head up grabs it, takes it into the burrow, and consumes it. The larva have a unique shape that allow them to rest near the burrow entrance for long periods of time. Larvae go through four instars in their burrows, growing larger each time. They are fascinating creatures. In this video, I use a small twig to "fish" for the larva. I only wanted to film it, not catch it.

I live in Alabama and these things are actually very common. An easier way to get them out is to stick a piece of straw or a thick piece of grass down their burrows until you can't get it any deeper. The larvae will automatically grab on. Then just jerk it up quickly and it'll pop right out. Lots of fun!

These beetles are absolute slayers at every instar. Well, other than as a pupa obviously, but that's a given.

When I was a kid one pastime of some boys during school breaks was to fish these little monsters out of their burrows (there were several soccer fields at this particular school). At Campinas, São Paulo state, Brazil, c. 30 years ago. But they didn´t use any bait, just a piece of grass.
