All these old tunes takes me back to the late 1950’s when I played in a skiffle group during my time in the RAF when posted as a medic at RAF Hospital Wegberg, Germany. Made our own fun in those days. Thank you for sharing this. 👍🎼🇬🇧🇦🇺🔭
Mr. Dykes has a Facebook page where I shared this thought a moment ago. (Thanks, Frank Giffen!) "The 'live' version of you and Mr. Pomeroy performing FREIGHT TRAIN is maybe my favorite of your 'best' at UA-cam. "I met Dave in Chet Atkins' office; I was there with Duane Eddy to have lunch . . . " What a name-dropper you are, Doyle. Here it is, from NAMM 2012. This great song (which I've been playing poorly since I was 16) never got a better workout than this. If I could keep only one rendition, this would be it. Chet would have smiled down on you that day. My God, and I say it reverently, just listen to this! p.s. Just when you think it can't get better, the brilliant segue into Limehouse Blues, and then Lover Come Back to Me. Goosebumps, every time I hear this. Yes, my favorite live recording by anyone, EVER! post script 3/2/2020 posted links to Doyle's recordings with his James Olson (best-ever steel-string acoustic -- he plays same model as James Taylor) and Doyle playing Little Drummer Boy on his Kirk Sands -- best nylon-string acoustic electric. (Says who? Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and . . . Doyle Dykes.) One of my very favorites also. And can you see Dave Pomeroy really enjoying the playing and the moment. That says it all about Doyle's playing. He is THE BEST.
The best country music Travis picking guitarist joins the best bass session man in Nashville. These two guys make it sound like a 4 piece band. Incredible playing.
I feel Tommy E has been able to capture a broader audience for different reasons and that gets him votes from more casual observers but I agree that nobody is more technically clean than Doyle. If I had to pick, I'd pick Doyle.I'll admit that I am biased after seeing him perform in person and then getting to talk with him a while. They play together occasionally and, if their ever close enough to me, I'll be there for sure! I guess when you get to their level it's impossible to say whose best??
Doyle is better than Tommy, cleaner, more controlled and he plays on time. Tommy just plays for speed, Doyle plays for quality of tone and for the song. Because Tommy is off on a speed trip every song, much of the time he plays sloppy and quite poorly.
As I understand it, Guild (Fender) offered him things Taylor wasn't willing to match. No ill-will here. As you may know Doyle is a wonderful human being. He's doing great though. They've already built a DDSM Guild guitar and he seems busier than ever. He and Bob Taylor will always be good friends.
I was at the thimb picking contest the year they had doyal play as the headliner and they put him in the thumb picking hall of fame that night and he was truly humbled by this and he said his guild deal had fell through on him and that he had a years worth of bookings with the guild people and the cancelled all his gigs and he said it had left him in a terrable spot trying to get jobs to take the place of the guild jobs he lost so I'm not sure what happened but soon after he was playing goldens and this made me sad. He is such a incredable talent everyone who plays a guitar should be familiar with royals work.
I know! He is the reason I started using Taylors a few years back and I've bought 3 now. They should've tried harder to keep him as he is not only among the elite players in the world but a great human being also. Oh well, Taylors loss, Fenders gain...
Are you asking why Doyle is not playing a Gibson? He is actually on a Fender stage and Guild is part of Fender guitars. So naturally he would be playing a Fender product. All the amps in the back seem to be Fender. Over the years I have seen him associated with several brands Taylor, Godin, Gretsch, etc. Chet played Gretsch, and then had a contract with Gibson so they made the Gibson Country Gentleman during that time., Later when Chet died, the family took up the relationship with Gretsch again. And Gibson has stopped making all the Chet guitars.
Taylor guitars were always a Martin wanna be. Other luthiers can make better. It's all in the wood and materials. I played a Chinese with Adirondack Spruce that beat all the Taylor's and Martin's in the store. $1000. Guitar. Go figure?
Obviously a genius on guitar, fantastic interpretation of a medley of popular songs
Incredible.. thanks, Doyle, for sharing your gift..
Can you believe one person gave this a thumbs down? I can't even wrap my brain around the speed and accuracy of this man!

Doyle was excellent and Dave stayed right with him. He is a studio musician for a reason

I must've watched this 100 times already. Never gets old.

Ray Cummins Does that stuff so smooth you guys are great
The rough recording can't diminish the artistry of Doyle's playing.
Just brilliant Doyle👏
OMG. THIS IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He was one of the best guitar players in the world
Simply amazing!
incroyable.Super guitariste.Virtuose
Doyle is plain amazing and Dave really knows his stuff!! What a Duo !!!!!
Ain't nobody on this earth that can play like this man. He is a national treasure. He blows the rockers away! He is a true guitar god.
And a hell of a nice guy too! I met Doyle at one of his clinics. He's funny as heck too!
He's one of the best guitar players I've ever heard
I can listen to these guys all day they are great guitarist
He's incredible......and having the time of his life. I would be too, if I had a smidge of his ability.

Hitting too many chords this morning making this man tear up.
Takes a lifetime to get where these men are.
A lifetime isn't enough for most people. I know I could do it in 2, though.
you just heard the greatest guitar player alive today
I'd love to give him my 70s D35 and just listen to him play it
amazing. doyle never disappoints
I think Dave is the head guy of the Nashville chapter of the Musicians Union.Big talents these 2 are!
I have to agree.......even cleaner than Tommy E. The man's an awesome player.
Hats off, dammit Jim!
Thanks, well put.
Saw him play in a local music store about twenty yrs ago. Wanted to go home and smash my fingers. I was gobsmacked as the english say.
I gotta go find my socks, holy crap.
Que som lindo eles estão fazendo.
Whaoooo Doyle. Amazing.

@@dlagrua or... hear me out... we could appreciate both, I swear all this comparing is pointless
hes so good
This guy is utterly amazing. Chet Atkins on steroids.

great to finally hear him playing some real woody guitars, his signature taylor used to sound like an anaemic banjo..
cleanest player out
That bass player can get it!
This i such a simple tune - its you who cant get it.
BEATS my rendition of the song !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tommy Emmanuel / Doyle Dykes / Glenn Campbell - we don't have to choose my friends.
KILLER
i miss his taylor guitars
No one is more precise than Chet Atkins. Remember, theres only one Chet.
the greatest of all time...but this guy is ridiculous also
Does anyone know what tuning this is? :-)
standard
Why didnt they make you play a Gibson hollowbody guitar!!?????

Isnt it Lover come back to me!?
Use your ears, he actually says "lover come" back at 3.07
Yes he plays Chet Atkins arrangement of L.C.B. there is a video tutorial of this by Chet.
@@johnhodges8264 He sneaks Limehouse Blues in at 2:10
기타는이리쳐야돼!
His voice like Chet Atkins
Kelly Barber says he's the best.
Why did Taylor lose him? Wasn't aware of that.

Thumbs down are you kidding ohhhh yes it was a liberal
What surprise that his guild accoustic takes a piezo so well. Normally piezo accoustics sound 😞 sorry, flat and almost horribly one dimensional.
