Yes, unions set the bar that some employers use to make sure they don't have more limiting workplace rules of the union. Delta airlines comes to mind. In the south where the unions are not much of a factor dealer techs will often pay more than $1000/month to cover 2 kids and a wife for $15000 yearly deductible coverage.

I've had the same experience with Unions in my line of work. They will help bad employee's and not help good employee's. I've only ever been held up by a Union and had to grease their palms to get them to stop holding me back. If you are a good worker then you usually don't need a Union.

I just finished leading with the NLRB and had the union voted out of my shop! NLRB was very helpful with the proper way to do everything and it took about three months. Surprisingly the union never fought back because they new we had enough interest to shut the door.

I've had this same experience where my old union (up in Canada here) was in the owners pocket (previous dealership). I find it hard to believe a union manager in Canada can afford a brand new 90k$ Mercedes-Benz. I got a better offer working for my old boss but in a new dealership that was non-union. In my first interview, I was asked if I have ever got into trouble enough to use the Union. My response to that was "If I do my job right, don't mess up or make bad calls, or don't show up late to work, why would I need a union?". I'm proud to say I got a 4$/hr pay raise, a damn good crew that are serious and goofy at the same time (think monkeys in the shop), a fantastic dealership owner and I am finally completely over my extreme depression as well as anxiety and fear of working in this trade.

I've never liked labor unions, they hold back the best employees and prop up the worst ones. I don't want to take a pay cut just so the new guy can get a starting salary that's twice what I made. Starting out at $9/hr sucks, but if you're good you won't be at a low wage like that for long. A good friend of mine transferred from a union shop to a non-union shop in the same company because the company wanted to promote him and give him a raise but the union wouldn't allow it. He hadn't been there very long and the union contract said that raises and promotions were scheduled based on years worked in the union, didn't matter how good or bad you were, when you had enough time in you got a raise.

Ive been a member of two union's one kinda watched out for us the second one was a fucked situation where the negotiations for yearly raises hadn't even managed to maintain the rate at a par relative to inflation. I got a 5 cent raise while watching the bank say 4% inflation so far and another 3% to come by year end... So my 5 cent raise worked out to be a 2% rate reduction relative to inflation.... I left that place right after calling a building inspector and the apprentice board of Canada.

I totally forgot about the union pension plan , then 3 years a go a 15k cheque from operating engineers in the mail . a year later a teamster cheque 13k nice ,in 2001 went to work as a heavy duty mechanic for BP petroleum , they paid better than union just to keep the union out , Devon petroleum was the last great company as well as Dome petroleum.

Unions aren't really needed in the UK as there are plenty of legal protections, state healthcare and mandated holidays of around 28 days. These conversations about healthcare just don't happen in the UK. For every person here who complains about some doctor they didn't like, I hear 50 who tell me what a great experience they had with our NHS. You still get best outcomes by being proactive and asking about treatments. Many expect doctors to be psychic and diagnose when you don't explain yourself.

Years ago I learned that its always proper to give at least 2 weeks notice to be considerate of your employer and not leave them high and dry but today we're in a different place. The rise in workplace violence over the last 15-20 years has made it so that anyone seen as a liability has to be off the premises. Terminate employment when they give notice, even if it leaves the shop short staffed. You just never know who is going to come in with an AR-15 and finish things off. Its a sad fact of life in the 21st century. In my type of work I don't think they would do that to me....but who knows. I see a lot of job openings today that say start immediately, maybe they know that even if they hire someone who is currently employed they won't be after they give notice.

There are things I don't like about mine. But I know I wouldn't make what I do and have what I have without them. My job pays all medical plus the entire big ass family of others there. If I have a visit I do have a small copay but last time I went I got a check in the mail for the copay so it was free for some reason. It's such a huge dollar per hour number to not have to pay half or some shit (like 4 per hour for just a young single person would be 10 for a family). It is unfortunate that at least one guy has like literally everyone in his family tied on and the company told everyone to make sure you take peoole off that aren't supposed to be on just abusing it. Makes the company have a huge savings on me being young and no family to add on.

I work in (what used to be) the film business here in L.A. and I remember when you could make a GOOD living doing stuff like independent (meaning non-Union) features, commercials, and even music videos. The unions would concern themselves with the BIG features and shows and not even bother with the smaller stuff. One entity wouldn’t mess with other.
But then NAFTA came to be in 1993 (something the film biz unions stupidly advocated for) and everything left for Canada and beyond, which killed the business here (and is still a problem to this day- you could shoot a cannon through any of the major studios with the lack of stuff going on).
This resulted in the unions out here sticking their tentacles into stuff they originally had no presence in including those commercials and independents, as the unions realized they slit their own throats by advocating for NAFTA. This eliminated any chance of seeing anything cool in them, all because the unions swallowed up any budgets that would have gone to the production with payoffs and other bureaucracy.
The worst is getting threatened by Union enforcers to join at risk of having your work truck torched (or worse). I’ve seen those kind of mafia-like tactics happen first hand.
The only times I got massively screwed over as far as my pay (and even personal safety) were on Union shows, too. Union reps would pull me off of jobs because of “reasons”, only to put their nephews in… days would be deleted from my pay… hours toward my retirement (which is underfunded by millions due to embezzlement from Union bosses) would go poof with no explanation…
Now the film unions out here are pushing that woke nonsense with regard to future potential members. Never mind the fact that the ones doing the crying about that wouldn’t dream of doing what I do for example, as a lot of the work is dirty, incredibly labor-intensive, and even incredibly dangerous. In short, they want the glory and don’t want to do any of the work.
So yeah- I used to make a TON more money during independent stuff when compared to the Union stuff.

I'm not going to engage in conversations that people are doubting what I say so that's the story and that's it

My dues are $89 each month. Not a whole lot but also not a little bit.
