Gear manufacturing refers to the making of gears. Gears can be manufactured by a variety of processes, including casting, forging, extrusion, powder metallurgy, and blanking. As a general rule, however, machining is applied to achieve the final dimensions, shape and surface finish in the gear. The initial operations that produce a semifinishing part ready for gear machining as referred to as blanking operations; the starting product in gear machining is called a gear blank.
In form milling, the cutter called a form cutter travels axially along the length of the gear tooth at the appropriate depth to produce the gear tooth. After each tooth is cut, the cutter is withdrawn, the gear blank is rotated, and the cutter proceeds to cut another tooth. The process continues until all teeth are cut.
Broaching can also be used to produce gear teeth and is particularly applicable to internal teeth. The process is rapid and produces fine surface finish with high dimensional accuracy. However, because broaches are expensive and a separate broach is required for each size of gear,this method is suitable mainly for high-quality production.
In gear form cutting, the cutting edge of the cutting tool has a shape identical with the shape of the space between the gear teeth. Two machining operations, milling and broaching can be employed to form cut gear teeth.

Did my apprenticeship in a company in the ‘70’s that made the complete saddle gearboxes for Colchester lathes. We made 2 sizes of gearbox, also top slides, compound slides and tail stocks.
As was the norm, I did six months in every department and ended up running the gearcutting shop at the age of 19 whilst still on day release to college.
I had 3 gear shapers and 3 gear hobbers, plus gear chamfering and deburring machines, horizontal and vertical broaching machines and an induction hardening plant to locally harden the gear teeth etc.
Not many people know about gear design or manufacture, it still is a specialised black art and I was fortunate to have learnt it.
I'm impressed with all of the different machining methods that produce the same thing.

@akx ind all accurate and correct info from you👍 Did you notice one of the hob cutters is of the indexable carbide insert type? I bet the cost of that tooling would make one's eyes water....'Reassuringly expensive' as the saying goes😨
@akx ind oh,most certainly,but frightening initial outlay and certainly not the sort of tooling you'd want any mishaps with. The cost gets double scary then.
Probably with human hands I suppose 🤧
AND how did they invent all these different gear cutting machines?

Which methid of maching is this?
The rotating cutters are known as gear hobs. The machine taking repeated vertical cuts is known as broaching cut.
In Europe these are called Pfauter method, Fellows method and MaAg method
