  • In this video I explore the Self from an Idea or Experience perspective. That is, which is more appealing, rationalism or empiricism when it comes to the self?

Indeed! Good one here, thanks. And Oh yes, that happens to me often when I use a wine glass to clean my brushes. Sometimes even better than the wine I can afford - until I realize what it is.

Thanks --- It took the mind three attempts to fully absorb the information; my ego and self-perception were obstacles that hindered the mind's understanding. mind over mind only works sometimes

I like your example of ownership being something you can’t experience directly because all my life that’s what I imagined my self to be: the owner and controller of my body

It could be both and simultaneously not... If the Non-Dual Self that is all is an experience and process of life it makes itself live as and experience itself as seperate entities. So the experience of seperation is an inseperable part of the indivisble, non-dual reality that "we" are. In that lila of seperation non-dualism is only an idea in the 'seperated mind.'
In that way it's both an idea and an experience and not.
But who knows, maybe all of reality is seperated materials that can think thoughts and maybe non-duality is one of those ideas in the thoughts.
    Who knows

Yes, you can directly experience the self, via the following thought experiment. Consider whether I could not have existed, but someone just like me could have existed in my place (in an identical universe). The difference between those persons has no physical or mental reality in this world, but FEELS real to me. That is the self. There is no homunculus there either. I grant you that my copy would also have felt the same way, so the feeling itself is not proof but it IS an experience. There is also no disproof. The idea that there is only one consciousness animating both copies and all other people is just an assertion.

Perception of the self, is a limited concept, and 70% of that perception is designed by a ruthless archenemy called culture. If you are serving the function of shaman, then perception of self becomes more complex. If a person gets fleeting glimpses of their self in the course of life, then that is at the time,.. received as a gift. It becomes obvious that you could not do it without help. It becomes a moment that is discernible and recognizable. In the exploration of thought, the glimpse of the self most likely does not happen in the beginning stages. It is taken as obvious in the later stages however. The coalescence of experiences appears to have staying power in consciousness. That is the evidence.

Perception of the self is 100% real if social conditioning is acknowledged and put in perspective.

This is the choice: either we live by moral code, or we live by "non-duality". And to be even more specific on your quote, here is Jung's "Answer To Job": "This is I, the Creator of all ungovernable, ruthless forces of Nature which are not subject to any ethical laws. I, too, am an amoral force of Nature, a purely phenomenal personality which cannot see its own back."

You obviously have a self, as do all those who claim otherwise, the Krishnamurti's, Tolle's of this world. If you had no self, there would merely be a rotting corpse which had died through inaction. As there may be hunger, but the self has to get the body off its butt and prepare some food, then gobble it down. Otherwise, we'd have a world chock-a-block with everyone and everything which had ever lived munching away.
A selfless body is one which has no thought, no memory, for these have no development and therefore, no existence. I once put this to J. Krishnamurti, but he brushed this serious point away with the flippant remark that "self is thought", and considered that a satisfactory answer and would not engage further. That may be partially correct but misses the whole fact that thought requires self, otherwise it's like saying here's a dictionary, therein is the entire work of Shakespeare... sort it out.
It's a bit like, why do you always place your books within view? Self promotion due to self interest.
Yes you can directly experience government... break the law get caught go through the courts go to jail. Alternatively, become a politician.

There's no self, there's only the conditioned brain with the movement of mechanical knowledge.

@@axutgautam1187 If that were so, there could be no insight, no intuition, no change. We'd be the sole outcome of such conditioning, of experience and memory. We'd be complete morons requiring instruction. We'd be a limited circular being, on a limited circular track. Obviously we are not.

@@Bob-v3g4m But you couldn't prove that "self" is an absolute requisite for all the things that you mentioned. The brain has its own natural rhythm of intelligence that can be encountered when the brain is still without the problems. With complete attention the intelligence which is already there functions on its own and the idea of "self" has nothing to do with it. The content of consciousness is shared by all the bodies and the brains. The brain and the memory is the mystery in this game.

@@axutgautam1187 So if the "content of consciousness is shared by all the bodies and the brains" I guess you can read minds? I didn't know the word "enlightenment" was a synonym of "mind reading". Now I'm much more interested in the subject! I just need to "wake up" and share the content of everybody else's brains and bodies!!
