      You’re so right, it’s such a mental game. The work doable, but it’s so easy to get caught up and discouraged. I’ve been reading Eckhart Tolle (on Colin’s recommendation) and slowly learning to be more in the moment and stress out much less.

    David - no kidding about Colin & Jamie making it look easy. Well, not really… they made it look miserable and brutal and awful but maybe, just maybe doable - because they’ve got so much experience. Good on you for doing serious dust collection. It may not stop the itching but your lungs will last a lot longer. Also, A+ for hearing protection - I lost about 50% in my right ear from working on boats and in workshops. It’s no joke.

    Great video again. You are such a great narrator. It will be nice to see where this channel will go in the future. I really do hope, that you will keep making these videos, and share you story with us. I am watching these, even though I have zero experience on sailing or so. I am a freaking hillbilly living 130 km north from the frigging Arctic Circle, here in Finland. And still, I am watching random dude taking apart he's sailing catamaran at the other side of the world :D But there is something in these videos, that keep me coming back. So thanks for there and good luck with the project.

      But anyway, for the strangest reason I am currently watching loads of sailing videos ( Parlay, Nahoa, Hakuna, Uma, Florence etc). And now yours. I have once been on a small monohull. And that was in a marina and we were waisted. But now I have huge urge to go and see, if sailing would be my thing. Hi. Sorry for your bad luck with the boat and I give you props for your never give up attitude.
    I have been in construction for over 40 years. The dust can be mitigated with a shop-vack just need a good filter for it.
    Also get an oscillating multi tool it can be more precise than a saws all and you can get into tighter areas with it and a little less dust. You can get a nice 24 V Dewalt for around $100.
    Next I see the fiberglass has pulled away in places and you are cutting it out so you can grind it smooth so you can start over.
    Rather than cut it all out ( a lot of labor and dust. Why not inject Resin into the separated areas let it fill and strengthen, bonding the two back together.
    Drill a little hole just through the inner surface this will allow you to inject the separated or delaminated sections less invasive less dust less work. Then maybe apply some fiberglass and resin to the existing pieces to make them stronger.
    The boat company should put out a fix like this for your boat. Theirs no need for all that dust and labor. You will still need access to it but with less dust.
    Good luck and let me know if this helps
    Cheers. Robert

    • @david_shih
      @david_shih  3 роки тому

      Injecting resin into the separated parts sound like a great idea! But I’m worried about adhesion-you know how fiberglass needs to be ground down before new layers are added (to remove the aiming blush.) I wonder if the separated layers need to be roughed up (which wouldn’t be possible) or suffer adhesion problems. I need to go pickup one of those dewalt multitool-my Ryobi ones suck!

    • @Themarriedbachelor
      @Themarriedbachelor 3 роки тому

      I’m sorry I wasn’t more clear.
      I would use an epoxy resin not a fiberglass resin they make all kinds of epoxy’s that will bond that without having to scuff it up some two part that when you push it through the syringe the tube will mix the two parts together creating a chemical reaction that’ll help it set up harder bond stronger and possibly stay flexible if you Do some research and find a good Epoxy for your application. Also instead of cutting out the old bulkhead why not sister a strong thin piece of material to each side of the existing bulkhead. By gluing 1/2 inch sheet of plastic to ether side of the bulkhead or a 1” piece to just one side of it if you can’t access the other side. I would glue it then through bolt it making the 2 new pieces and old bulkhead one strong solid piece. With a lot less mess

    Just keep the prize in mind. I had a project recently where the UA-cam video said it would be around a 10 hour project. Reality was it was more like a 60 hour project. Multiple times I felt the same as you where wanting to abandon the project. When you get to that point, take a break and remember you are rebuilding a Lagoon 450! An amazing boat! The effort is worth the reward and when completed the worst of it will pale to the prize. Keep at it and keep your head focused on the reward at the end. Good luck!

    What are your plans for the cabins after the structural repairs, as the panels don’t look as though they can be reinstalled?
    Are you going to do an owners conversion?
    And where are you planning to do the cabinetry and panel replacement?

I used it when I shotblasted the inside of my outriggers (1 metre diameter by about 9metres) and then painted them and it really kept the dust under control.

    I'm sure you are well along now and don't need my advice. But buy wood working dust collection system and use it to collect the dust. Use shop vacuum dust collection for your grinding and sanding machines. Use box fans with heat and air filters on the back side. Move air through as many filters as you can. See woodworking dust collection systems.

      I can use all the advice I can get man! Walk me though the box fans--why do they need heat? I ended up going with a dual dust deputies as a dust collection system powered by 2 of those highest CFM shopvacs. To be honest it still wasn't enough to contain the endless amounts of dust!

      Give me a email address. I need to send you pictures. Do you have 220 volts available? I used to own a cabinet manufacturing company. Dust removal is a large part of machining wood in a enclosed environment. (Side note: I'm surprised at how the cabinets are built, certainly European, but usually they are integrated into the boat for/to add structural integrity. By shaping them to fit the shape of the hull and tabing them to the hull. I guess they want them to be able to be remodeled without having reinforce the hull.
      Back to the dust collection. I need to send a few pictures. You will get why you are having problems. It's all cfms, cubic feet per minute. Running a plastic duct work out of the boat connected to big fans or fan. Depending on the budget and availability. But in short you want to replace as much air as possible as closest to your work and move it out of the boat.

      The heater filter taped on the back of a box fan. The fan is just pulling air through the filter. No heat just a filter that fits a heat and air handling unit in a home. They sell them a dollar general.

    Don't sell yourself short PR have each other to lean on and help motivate each other on the daily. Working alone on a shit job can be harder and scarier than anything!!!! Keep up the good work and if you need some motivation/venting therapy channel those feelings into the parts of the boat that failed. Basically fold those feeling back into the problem if that makes sense....don't look at it as destroying your boat......look at it as destroying the obstacle preventing you from living the life you want to live. Sometimes you have to rage at a problem before you can make it your bitch. lol I am going through something similar with an RV I bought....it took me forever to get started on repairing her because I looked at it as destroying something that would help me live a dream of mine...once I wrapped my head around the fact that her issues where standing in the way of living how I wanted to live it was a lot easier and less scary to get started with destroying what on the outside looked perfectly fine. Great honested video!!!

      @@david_shih one last note on glass dust and the "itch"
      when you are done, and are rinsing off you need to take the coldest shower you can.. this shrinks the pours up, and the glass dust won't dig in as far. A Hot shower will always make the itch worse... so always a cold rinse fully first. Like "eeek, that's cold" rinse.. then take your normal shower
