One thing that helped me a lot when I was learning to ride; reminding myself to look towards the horizon. When I looked at the ground, that's where I ended up.

    Hi everybody,
As you can see, the pace of progression is slow! I'm trying my best to break things down so that beginners have a wealth of information to work with when learning to ride.
But yeah, I realise for many of you these videos are going to be pretty boring for a good few months or... years haha

PrettyGoodChannel Excellent addition to Uniquest man. Been riding for a few weeks pretty passionately, and have learned a lot just on my own. The knowledge you’ve provided on UA-cam has been a great attribute in refining my riding and learning new things. I was able to ride almost anywhere after a few hours, and now I can ride as long as I want, otherwise I haven’t learned other basics with as much ease but getting there, I can free mount a bit sloppy now and still working on idling a bit here and there, but am looking forward to completing a minimum of the basics. This video should greatly improve the steps I’ve been working on and again looking forward to the next part. Slow progression or not, these videos will not only be great for improving skills of new riders like myself watching from the beginning, but of course future riders, either way, the wealth of knowledge from such an experienced rider is greatly appreciated and can wait patiently for the next one while I work on what I already know. Thank you very much!

To keep me busy during social distancing I received a unicycle as a gift. These videos have been a big help so thanks. Took me three hours and two minutes to learn to cycle, from an assisted start, to the end of my driveway which is about 7 revs. Now I can free mount easily, turn 180 degrees in 3 revs, and cycle until I get tired. I'm now trying to work out idling and going backwards. Thanks for the videos!

I am so stoked right now, just hit hour 20 in my unicycle training tonight. I have been watching all your beginner videos and have found them way helpful... Last night I was able to uni all the way across the length of an outdoor basketball court 5 times, WooHoo.. Tonight I decided to try out the free mount and after about an hour or so I was able to pull off about 5 good free-mounts followed by several revolutions because of this video . The hardest part about free-mounting for me is getting the second foot to land in the appropriate position on the pedal (after jumping up with the second foot). Sometimes that foot ends up too far back on the pedal. Sometimes it ends up too far forward. Sometimes it ends up too far inwards and so rubs up against the crank with each and every revolution. And there seems to be no way to adjust the placement of the foot on the pedal, once you're up and running. Perhaps you could please address this issue of foot-placement-on-the-pedal in your comments or in a subsequent video? Thanks.

It's like that. Generally people learn to freemount quite late, and they just rely on holding onto things for mounting, totally normal but IMO super nonpractical. BUT, getting really confident in the saddle and working on your confidence and balance when riding is generally a good way to improve your freemounting capabilities, it comes with time.

Thanks x 1000. This the best way for the free mounting. I’ve tried all the methods I could find un UA-cam and I failed on all of them: they would cost many hours. Your method is the best, with success since the very first practice session. An advice I could give, from what I´ve learnt with this method, is to make a little jump with the foot that´s on the ground. Thanks from a spanish patreon subscriber.

    Yesterday 2nd day:
Riding around a double tennis court.
Assisted mounts, both left and right
    Assisted idling
    Assisted bunny hops
Assisted pedaling further from the fence just barely touching with my hand. The chain link fence is a bit loose and not perfectly flat, curving out in places, so it's teaching me to only use it for a light touch, and I found it's much easier to balance the further away I am from the fence with both arms out to the side and in front of me.
    0.51mi = 6.1 loops of 440 ft tennis courts fence. 1hr 45mins.
    Really improving.
Progressive distance 1 side, 2, 3, then 4 sides of the fenced court without stopping. Was able to do 3x separate 440 ft loops both CW and CCW (right hand light touch and left hand light touch on the fence), and able to start with either foot. Blended in bunny hops and 1/2 rev idling.
Getting stronger, getting used to the rhythm of a little pump just before the dead zone, and repeating left right left right over and over while balancing with a little forward lean while feeling the seat and the pedals equally.
Relaxing my legs with a forward lean and equal feeling in the feet and seat is the key.
Kept playing with the seat height to find what would help me be the most relaxed and rolling through the dead zone freely. 30" seems about perfect for me wearing shoes (5'7" tall, 29-in inseam standing flat-footed). Riding a 26-in QU-AX Luxus uni ordered from Renegade Juggling in Santa Cruz, California. It's a German company with manufacturing in Taiwan.
Maybe a little big to be starting on, but I want to be able to do some distance with it, and be able to accompany some running friends on their workouts. Seems like I could do 8:30 to 6:30 per mile pace on the 26-incher once I get good at it, which will be perfect.
    Back at it! 😄

I taught myself one little trick today that made a big difference.
1st I realized that it's a tall balanced triangle, and the balance point is the seat.
    Seat
    /\
    / \
    Pedal Pedal
2nd When I sit on the seat with the pedals horizontal, I straighten one arm and put the heel of my hand on the front of the seat, and I push down on the seat to feel the gentle forward pelvis tilt that I need, and it also takes the weight off the pedals so I have an exact feeling for being light on the pedals. PELVIC TILT provides finer control than leaning.
Just that one thing pushing down on the seat and getting my feet light makes a big difference.
Oh! I also put on thin racing running shoes.
    I was wearing boots before.
And I remembered that people can wear thickly padded running shoes and the result is that they hit the ground harder because they they don't get the proprioceptive feedback to their feet.
A runner in thin-soled shoes or even barefoot caresses the earth.
So I was pushing down harder than I needed to because I couldn't feel it because of the boots.
So I put on my thin racing flats and that really helped me keep a light feeling also.
Great progress, pedaled 1.08 mile today, doing 440 ft at a time around two tennis courts, while lightly touching the fence at arm's length.
I realize that the foot I was putting too much pressure on was the one on the fence side and that was creating difficulty moving through the dead zone. so just getting away from the fence and extending both arms wide really made a difference.
    Changing direction also helps.
It's all coming together and I'm excited!

Haha oh boy, I can write a brief comment. You're meant to sit on your ass/GOUCH, not your balls. If you're having problems, you can adjust the angle of your seat and also your seat height to make things more comfortable, and ahhh unless you're an absolute monster, there shouldn't be a problem haha. If you're talking about bunny hops/drops/jumping, its a different story, like on a bike, you need to land with straight legs to compress the landing, just like on a bike, and just like on a bike, you need to land with your pedals/cranks parallel with the ground so you can distribute weight equally.

    My pedal snapped off.
This has me a little afraid to doing the bunny hops.
It took 2 months for the shop to replace it.

Tho on the 2 wheel bicycle you can go at lower speed you still need to have enough speed to balance!

I'm learning unicycling at the moment, my girlfriend is teaching me. I've tried getting on a unicycle like 2 or 3 times before but never really serious. For now, I started 3 days ago with getting on the unicycle and would hold her shoulder for an assitset ride (better than walls in my opinion because if i ride in circles she can walk along with me). Today on day 3 I managed to get on the unicycle alone and could ride about 100-200 metres alone, very curvy but its getting somewhere. I train about an hour, 2 at a max a day (now in quarantine I have alot of time haha). I think if you calculate like 2 weeks you are good to ride more or less stable on your own until your butt hurts :P

please can you suggest me a new Trial unicycle for the best cost from any country to India because no companies make unicycles in India.

The Impact Athmos is probably the best cheapy, Isis hubs and a good rim. It's better than I am :)

Hello Chris, I must tell you I discovered why it is difficult for me to progress in unicycle. I read that you are in New Zealand and I am in France, so I am basically riding upside down ? Or maybe is it you ? I don't know ..

Just before I start practicing advanced tricks, I need to know if any of you guys have been badly injured while learning

I'm learning and fell forwards and skidded along the floor, but only got scraped a bit, you can't really screw up, if ur gunna fall just step off the unicycle

somehow i fell off backwards (very hard) and i still can't figure out what happened. i landed on my right hip, messed up my right elbow, and took a really hard shot to the back of my head. i lay there dazed for a few minutes before i was able to get up. i haven't tried getting back on since but i'm hoping to try again soon. i'm thinking some kind of helment wouldn't go amiss so i'll get one before i try again [i have an old motorcycle helmet somewhere around here so i might try that :-)] -- for now i'm just looking longingly at the uni in the corner and hoping to regain some courage/motivation. it's been a week and the soreness is abating so i don't know if it classifies as "badly injured" but it ripened my blueberries in a hurry.

I haven't been badly injured while unicycling I've scraped my back pretty bad but that's because I wasn't wearing a shirt.

When you walk, you have to lean forward, or walking would be impossible.
As with unicycling, lean forward, just the same mechanism.
