Hi! We're Nick and Jen, a retired military veteran of 14 years and professional dancer/entertainer at Coyote Ugly Bar. Together, we decided to sell everything and break free of the glitz, glam and chaos of city life to move off gird. We live on our 20 acres of remote land in the mountains of Southern Utah.
We’re trying to be as self sufficient as possible by installing all our own utilities and doing everything DIY with as much modern technology as can make happen. Living off grid is about the freedom to build our own path one plank at a time. Life, indeed, is Elevated Off Grid. Come along and see what life is like as we continue to build our property and adventure around Southern Utah's mountains.

You should have mounted your mini split up on the side of your home. You live in a snowbelt area that will bury your mini split in snow better to have it up in the air so it’s not sitting in snow during the winter months. 🇺🇸👊🏼👊🏼✌🏼….. The wetter the mix the weaker the concrete

U should build an awning over ur porch near the door before winter comes back around so snow and ice doesn’t sluff off and hurt anyone during winter. Last winter the build up was crazy dangerous. Just a thought

Heads up about mini splits. We have one and live in Western Washington. Last Winter we had a week of really cold weather. Our neighbor on the side where the base is told me they could hear noise coming from it. We checked and there was ice build up on the base unit which would have burned it out had she not let us know. We chipped off the ice and had to do it twice. So beware of this. Especially if you will be using it while you are gone to keep some heat on while you are gone. We are going to figure out a solution before Winter this year.

We live in Canada and have had a mini split heat pump for 5 yrs. It cools in the summer and heats in the winter. Never an issue with ice build up on it. 60 or 70% of the houses in our area have heat pumps and icing up is not an issue. There might be an issue with your unit.

You can leave breakers not in use out and they make panel planks that just pop in look clean and it safe

Is your mini split going to be covered by snowfall? That will create issues for your heat pump to work

2 things, snow well cover the condenstor for their not very tall.
Before you dry wall. You may thing about putting 4x8 plywood for shop tools which would be better then just plain drywall.

A couple of pointers for future cement work...First, never leave that rebar sticking out of the ground uncovered. One trip and you have an impaling situation. Second, I did not see any vibrating going on after the cement was poured, so if you are like most people, you don't have a dedicated vibrator tool lying around. For the rest of us DIYers, grab a Sawzall and pull the blade. Plug it in and turn it on. Hold the tool on the forms and voila instant vibrator... Lastly, I agree that the cement was a little soupy. I would have advised taking more time doing the mixing ratio correctly. I also would have covered it with wetted burlap. If the cement dries too quickly, it will crack. I would have also run some anchors into the ground under the slab so a storm would not blow the outdoor unit over.

You and your family are always fun to watch. Adjusting your schedules for the new school year and all the projects you have going on. Just a question, are you guys going to insulate your garage? Please make sure that you have some kind of barrier so you don't get exhaust fumes up into your living quarters. Just a concerned fan! Be safe until next time.

We home schooled our kids back in the day when it was illegal to do so. Had to purchase special legal defense liability insurance in case the school district or State of Ca came after us. We also used abeka academy; excellent program. Have a blessed week and I'll see you on the next one. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

It would help if you never loaded a cement mixer which is stationary water first the the concrete mix.

When installing tandem breakers, keep in mind you don't put red and black wires on one tandem breaker. I'm guessing those are Edison circuits, the black and red need to be on opposite phases, otherwise the shred neutral will be overloaded. 45 year journeyman electrician here. Please research this and do it correctly.

❤Ah, upgrading your electrical setup to handle the mighty force of 200 amps, eh? Here's how you can embark on this electrifying adventure: 1. **Assess Your Needs**: First, confirm that you really need 200 amps. Most homes don't require this much unless you're running a small factory or a grow op (for, uh, tomatoes, of course). 2. **Solar Panel Upgrade**: - **Inverter Replacement**: Your solar setup's inverter is likely rated for 60 amps. You'll need a new inverter that can handle 200 amps. This might also mean upgrading your solar panels if they can't produce enough power to necessitate a 200-amp service. 3. **Main Electrical Panel Upgrade**: - **Hire an Electrician**: This isn't DIY territory unless you're an electrician yourself. You'll need a pro. They'll replace your 100-amp panel with a 200-amp panel. This involves: - **Permits**: Get the necessary permits from your local government. They like to know when you're playing with the power of Thor. - **Panel Replacement**: The old panel comes out, and the new, beefier panel goes in. This might also involve upgrading the meter base and possibly the line from the utility if it can't handle 200 amps. 4. **Wiring**: Ensure your home's wiring can handle the increased load. Older or inadequate wiring might need upgrading, which can be a significant part of the cost and effort. 5. **Utility Company Coordination**: - You might need to coordinate with your power company. They could need to upgrade the service drop to your house or adjust their transformer. 6. **Inspection**: After the upgrade, an inspection will likely be required to ensure everything is up to code. 7. **Battery Storage (Optional but Cool)**: If you're going this far, consider adding battery storage. It's like giving your solar setup a buffer, so you can use or store more of that sweet solar juice even when the sun's not shining. 8. **Cost**: Brace your wallet. This isn't cheap. Between equipment, electrician fees, permits, and potential utility upgrades, you're looking at several thousand dollars, easily. 9. **Future-Proofing**: While you're at it, think about future needs. Electric vehicles, home automation, or that giant laser tag arena you've always dreamed of might require even more power in the future. Remember, electricity is like a wild beast - magnificent but dangerous if not handled with respect. So, while this upgrade can significantly increase your home's electrical capacity, it should be done with all due caution and expertise. And remember, if at any point you're unsure, it's better to call in the cavalry (professional electricians) than to end up with a shocking experience!😊
