I heard Don Cherry back in the late eighties during a concert in the Fabrik in Hamburg. Joachim Kühn ( piano ) was playing with his band . I think Miroslav Vitous played bass. Don Cherry walked in , took his pocket trumpet out of his jacket and after warming up backstage he played an amazing solo. His free spirit was literally flying around in the "Fabrik". It was at the time that he worked with the NDR Bigband conducted by Dieter Glawischnig.... Beautiful memory!
I've heard him in late 80's with Ornette Coleman, unluckily on that night he was not in good shape and had several troubles while palying - nevertheless he was a graceful presence and could give all the same some good essays of his musicality
Sonny Rollins/Don Cherry Quartet w/ Henry Grimes Billy Higgins The Complete 1963 Paris Concert not much recorded material so its GREAT this is available
great!! have some of rollins recordings with don--don used to talk about sonny with great respect--i remember listening to some of sonny's records with don late at night in sweden--what sonny says here is really sharply observed and expressed--
I believe "our man in Jazz" on RCA, was the only record put out at the time that featured their collaboration. Possibly one of Sonny's most 'out there' work.

At this point Sonny is one of the last survivors of his era, along with Roy Haynes and just a few others
We are so grateful.
Benny Golson, too.
Sonny Rollins such a beautiful Human being -so modest
Does anyone else think that Sonny Rollins composes his speech like he composes a solo?
A man with big knowledge, like to hear this, wise!
Great birthday gift, thankyou
