Hiya from 🇺🇸 New sub here. This is a very cool way of planting. Im disabled and this is perfect for me.
😊😊
Thank you .
I would love to see your show of blooms each time that they emerge over the months to follow. Great demo!
My wife just watched this over my shoulder ...she now wants to grow daffodils and tulips! Another great video Tony 👍
Did you get around to planting them up mate
I was stationed in the UK for 9 years. one of my favorite things to do was to walk the paths around my village and enjoy my neighbors gardens!! Spring is my favorite time of the year with the bulbs blooming everywhere!
Yeah its beautiful in spring here
Will these continue to produce year after year? And what do you do once everything has died back?
Really enjoyed this video Tony, the half pot showing the layers is fantastic! This year I've bought lots of daffodils and narcissi to naturalise under the plum trees in the duck enclosure and the tall trees by the piggeries.
Thanks Liz glad you enjoyed it and the visual, The thing took me longer than planting the proper one lol all for a 1 min take hehehe. It will certainly brighten up things
What a great idea. This is my first year to plant tulips (USA-KY) and I wondered about what to do with the containers before the tulips break ground and what afterwards. I think I may try doing this. Thank you for the video.
I love that configuration. I never thought of planting bulb plants like that before. My wife would enjoy something like that.
Aaron. mine loves it each year, take the time now for a few quid and make her a happy lady :)
So pleased I found your videos. You start right away on a subject showing and giving tips as you go. You sure know your stuff.
Thanks very much, Shirley. I am glad they are of interest and welcome tot he channel. Really appreciate you taking time out of your day to comment too :)
I’m growing crocus, daffodil, tulip, narcissus, iris, snowdrops and I can’t wait for the colour to come. I will definitely be using this technique next year. Thanks, great video 👍🏼
Wonderful! Have fun with it
Ooops I have planted my bulbs late August hope they will be OK in the uk weather 😮
So nice to view your interest video on planting bulbs. The lasagna idea is great 👍 thank you. Now a need bulbs.
Thanks for visiting
Hi Thanks for this.I'm new to gardening now I'm semi retired. I have finally gone out and planted up my large deep plastic trough because I had about 70 bulbs to plant and nowhere to put them so I've planted about 50 of them following your lasagne method including aliums (varied packs) around the long edges quite close in and a central line of beautiful double daffodils which were starting to sprout then added about 30 tulip bulbs- some pale pink edged white ones (Simply Irresistible) and some purple/black (Queen of the Night)and some lighter purple and am very excited to see next March as I've had success with my experimental and marvellous wine and roses gladioli from Aldi. I hope I haven't overdone it and at the same time wonder if I can do some top planting as you have. Hooray. Thanks again. Only twenty left to go SOMEWHERE
glad you enjoyed it. sorry YT didnt tell me about your comment. I just found it
Really clever,thanks for sharing
Fab video Tony! I loved the visual example of how you do the bulb lasagne! Even though I usually stay away from ornamentals, there is nothing better than a flourish of colour throughout spring :) I can't wait to see how it'll turn out for you with all the bulbs you planted in spring. Great stuff mate!
Thanks mate, Its nice to have some colour early in the garden even if you can not eat it. It lifts the spirits and sets you forward for a great season. I thought the visual might help folks understand it easier
Thanks Tony for a great video, I started planting yesterday but didn't realise you could put so many bulbs in. I thought they'd block each other now I'm going to try your way but have artic lilies to go in bottom hope it works
No problem 👍
Great video. Mine are already planted up Lasagne style. I’ve planted 6 layers of bulbs in each x-large terracotta pot! On the very top I’ve planted pansys. They look great!
Excellent Tina, Glad to see you have put something for winter in it too Just like we did. Id be interested to seeing a pic of yours when they flower
Ones I planted with bulbs last year and topped up with soil and viola’s this August I’ve noticed have shoots already poking through. I have never ever known this to happen before. Do you think it’s the weather we have had this summer? I’m in Kent and it’s still really warm down here.
I think its because its been real hot then went cold now warmed up again, We had it here last spring where Daffs were up out of the ground around Xmas so the weather is changing which means timing may alter too
I think you are right. Next year once the last have come up I just might take them out of the containers and plant them under the trees in the garden. Then plant up a new batch in October/ November. Least that way they should all be poking their heads out at the correct time. Last year I had the daffy out at Christmas.
Hi, im planning to do this this year. How do you put pancies on top? And do you take them out befire spring comes?
This is a very interesting way of planting different types of bulbs! Most of my bulbs and other plants are planted in a container and I’ve often wondered whether it’s possible to plant several types of bulbs using one big container . I am so glad I come across your YT video. Thank you !
Thanks for visiting and welcome to the channel. In my most recent video I talk about turning the channel into an all things gardening channel rather than just growing your own. be great if you decided to stick around. These pots sown in this way are fantastic and bring months of colour
Thats brilliant - I'm going to plant mine up tomorrow, and I will be putting spinach on top that I will harvest over the next few weeks
Best of luck!
What a super instructive video. I now realise that I do not put enough bulbs in my pots.
I love growing spring bulbs and this year I want to try the lasagne method. I grow in containers as I have small garden. I like growing snowdrops, blubells, tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses.
Hina
Hina, these pots are starting to come back to life and ive done nothing to them
These bulls will grow back again next year.
Video was so helpful. Especially for beginners..Stay safe.😷🌺🌼🌹🌷🌻
Glad it was helpful!
I really enjoyed your video and found it very helpful. Thank you 😊
Excellent. Very well explained Tony. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing. I know that will be beautiful when it blumes. Enjoy your garden 🌹
When is the best time to grow tulips and daffodils please
When is the best time to grow tul
I live in Ontario and plan to make a bulb lasagna for my condo terrace. You UA-cam has been very helpful. Thank you.
Awesome. Be sure to let me know how it turns out for you Sheila
Great explanation Tony. That pot should be a riot of colour in the spring. Take care. Nick
Thanks, Nick. I hope so. should certainly brighten the garden up a little in dark days
This year I have started narcissi in nursery pots ready to plant in the ground when the summer plants are over.
That will be brilliant Anne. Always good to have things come up following the initial blooms
About to start my lasagna bulb planting.... thank you for your instruction and great tips!
awesome I am sorry for the late reply, YT didnt tell me about your comment. I just found it
Excellent video. Going to try this. Thanks
Hope you enjoy
I've been doing this for years with a lot of success.
Yes it works great
@@simplifygardening must say thpugh I had not heard the term Lasagne planting
@@vallee3140 The term was coined back in the early 80's by a dutch gardener who said it looked like layers of a lasagne. Here its been used for 30 years that I know of
Thank you for the video. I am trying forcing bulbs this year. Issue is I had to put just the bulbs in a small fridge, and now that they are chilled, I'm kind of confused how to plant. I am in US in Wisconsin, and our winters get really cold. We have an unheated garage, but I am afraid that they may get frozen (which 2 weeks ago, they probably would have) which is why I store the bulbs in the fridge. I love the layer look of bulb pots. Instead of spending $100 buying one online, I thought I try creating my own. Hopefully they turn out. I'm surprised not to see more videos of this, this year since people are looking forward to spring because of COVID.
I v bought spring bulbs this year and will be potting them in to concrete pots they to heavy to move around or bring in its end of august now I ll be planting them out soon first time for me to grow bulbs so I hope they will survive the winter outside
Mine have survived since planting them and they are still going
Great video will be building my pots like this this year
Have fun! Mary
Great idea, I will be planting some bulbs this weekend. Really good presentation too, especially liked the sliced pot idea.
Thank you 🌈
Thanks Carole. I am glad I thought that visual might help some folks understand the idea behind the lasagne method.
That will provide a riot of colour for a good few months mate. Brightens up the plot when dotted around. Plant mine similar, adding a bit of horti grit to the top. With pots with no drain holes, adding charcoal to base helps 😀👍
Yes Charcoal is a great idea to mate, thats for sharing that nugget. How are you pal?
Hello Tony! I have planted spring bulbs for the first time recently around a small pond I have put in my very small wild life area, Crocus, Tulips, Alliums, and little Daffodils, also a yellow water iris for the pond which has turned brown. Great video cheers :-)
Thats great James, That will certainly make the pond look much brighter when the frogs are croacking
I love that idea! Will give it a try. Thanks!
excellent, thanks for your comment, Make sure you let me know how it goes :)
Hi Tony and thank you for your amazing tutorial. I love to grow bulbs inside of our home. I tried growing hyacinths indoor but their flowers did not come out of the leaves. Flowers opened up while they are low and down to the their bulbs. Did this also happen to your hyacinths? Do you know how I can prevent this problem?
Check out my Hyacinth video where I show you how to force blooms for Xmas
Excellent tutorial - thanks Tony.
Thanks RestAwhile Y'all I really appreciate you taking the time to comment :)
loved your video
What an excellent tutorial.
Thanks for using the cc text at the bottom.. I enjoyed the video
Hi Giselle, I do try to do it most times, but these videos sometimes take an entire day to film and edit and half a day to plan and do the SEO with a full-time job 3 children and other things going on it is not always possible but I do my very best to get them done if i can spare the time. I do intend on doing every video as and when I can get to it
Hei, what should we do after the blooming period ? Do we need to dig up the bulbs again and replant for the nex coming fall?
Sin Yin Wong cut back the dead leaves, fertilize and move the pot of the ground where it can drain properly. Next spring you should be able to enjoy the beautiful blooms again.
Great video. Thanks so much
Hi Eileen, Do you intend on having a go?
UK Here We Grow Yes. I did some today!
I hope u also share the bloomed lasagne method. The before and after for our appreciation. Thank you for sharing your skills. Manila, Philippines
Thank you so much fantastic video 😍🧡🌹
What a great idea! Thank you for sharing it with us.
Hey, Thanks for your comment. I am glad it was of interest to you. cheers for commenting and liking the video :)
Excellent for the beginner. What about bluebells. Can they be planted also.
Can't wait for spring, very inspiring. Thankyou.
You are so welcome!
Only recently heard of this - going to try it this weekend!
Oh your going to love the results when you see it
Hi,
Thanks. I enjoyed the video. Very helpful. What is the best mobth to grow Tulips and Daffodils in the UK? Thanks
blessings and thank you for sharing Tony
Thanks Linda. Always a pleasure :)
good day to you Tony !! excellent explanation on the lasagne method of planting the spring bulbs !! i grow mine in pots, raised beds and in the ground so i found this video very satisfying !! i'm growing tulips, English Bluebells Common Snowdrops, Native British Daffodils, Woodland Tulip, Crocus, Anemone nemorosa & a couple more i can't remember the names of !! 👨🌾🎥👍✝
Loads of fantastic bulbs there, the garden should be like a jewel mine when they come up
Just would like to see it bloom all those bulbs in a time frame. Thank you this video helped me. Cuz i have. Tulips get in soon.
The flowers start early I already have tips showing so will bloom in Jan and then others will come through right up until June. Its a great way to bring colour to the garden early
What happens after all the bulbs flowered? Do i have to dig it up due to new baby bulbs ? Or leave it and plant a new annual on top ?
Hello Tony. Do you dig those bulbs out after the season is over and then re plant the bulbs again?
Dull and dingy? Spring is my favourite time of year. Life emerges from the winter gloom, spring bulbs, tree blossom, birdsong, longer and warmer days, and the summer to look forward to.
Anyway. Great video. New sub!
Yeah but can play havoc with filming 😉 welcome to the channel
He's in the UK. Its always gloomy there
Mate, you are the KING! it's like a fireworks display in a pot!
It will be when it starts in Spring pal. it will be a great display
Fabulous video Tony! Love the lasagna method. I’ve never planted flower bulbs before until watching your hyacinth video last week. I’ve now planted 2 pots of blue hyacinths for Christmas gifts 🎁
And will definitely give this a go too!
Thank you 😊
That is fantastic Rachael. I am really pleased my videos inspired you to have a go and make some great gifts for xmas and then on to spring :)
I want to store my bulbs after flowering so I can use the pots in the summer. What’s the best way to do it, Tony? Thanks
I enjoyed your video it will be the first time I well plant bulbs will I be able to keep them out side
Yes, absolutely
BUGGER !!!!! ---- planted all my bulbs (around 150 ) earlier in late september, used nearly all the bulbs you mentioned also.
wish i would have known this way before , seems i ve spread my bulbs a bit thinly in 8 pots and 8 long tubs .
first year gardener ,,, paul from merthyr/aberdare.
Mate I am sure you will get a fantastic display, But this way gives you something in small spaces for long periods
I just have five crocus n put them in the garden,,,,,,you have a lot,,,I just have five,,,,🐞🐞🐞🐞
The idea is to fill the container with colour throughout the spring
Ok pal just bought 75 crocuses 60 narcissus 20 hyacinths and 60 tulips All in one container I have eaten lots of lasagnas in my live but the first time I've planted bulbs the lasagna way
Imagine the visual in spring, its like Italian food for the soul my friend :)
That's an awesome idea. I've got to try this. Although I am worried that we might get snow again early next year. Fingers crossed for a warm spring 🌸🌺🌻🌼🌝
They will be fine under the snow
Oh awesome
:)
😀
Would be great to see the results months later!!
Sorry they have just died back sorry about the late reply, YT didnt notify me of a load of comments
@@simplifygardening no worries!! Thanks for reply!
Vince Byrd I agree. I would love to have seen the results
Is it too late to plant some
Daffodil and narcissi bulbs
in pots?
Love this idea!! I've got to be careful with terracotta pots for cracking in the bad winter weather's. No greenhouse to set them in either. Which is a shame because l prefer them to the plastic counterparts! 😊
If you lift the pot up an inch or so on pot steps this will allow it to drain and wont blow due to constantly freezing and thawing
I'm unsure where to put them for the winter. I saw that someone was trying this in Canada so I must be able to do it in Maine. Can I keep them in a room that I keep at 45-50 degrees? Would that work? Do they need to be in the dark?
so excited to give this a try!
Hope you like it!
Been doing this method for a couple of years, with dwarf crocuses, tulips and daffodils. Everything dies back just in time for the begonias, salvias and cinerarias to emerge from the greenhouse and be put in their place. Hopefully get another couple of years out of the bulbs before it's time for a refresh.
Yeah its a great method and lots of colour comes through
Spring here is the most colorful. And summer is the dull death color! XD lol
You can use the same principles with summer flowering bulbs What I do it have pots for both at home
Very very nice 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi Tony, where would you keep this pot throughout the winter? From Canada.
I would put it in a greenhouse shed or up against a wall, but will be fine outside if raised off the ground to allow it to drain correctly
I live in zone 9 in California. ShoiI wait to plant my bulbs in containers? Thank you Tony. I really enjoyed your video .
hi Tony if i put it in garage do i need to water it and. when shall i take put i live in michigan cold snow r
I planted 110 mixed tulips yesterday in the ground at my allotment :-)
That will really brighten up the plot in spring Barbara
Good idea!🌹
Thanks Gail 😁
Hi! Do you leave the pots inside or outside, does it make a difference?
I only wish I'd have seen this sooner! This is brilliant! I love it! Can you do this with gladiolus bulbs too?!
Hi, thank you for the great video. How big is your pot? It's so hard to figure it out on screen.
My plot is 185ft long by 69ft wide
@@simplifygardening Hi again, sorry but I didn't ask about your plot but your pot. The one you planted the bulbs in. Thank you!
@@rickivanov haha
Thanks for the video. It looks and sounds pretty cool! I already got a couple of big pots and want to try this method. The only thing what’s holding me back is the depth of planting. Aren’t tulips supposed to go no deeper than 4-5’? But in your method they are buried deeper than that. Same goes for daffodils. Will they sprout and really bloom being planted so deep? That’s my only concern. The outcome video would help understand and visually see the results! Awaiting for your response before I start digging and planting 😊
Yeah these work great and bring in tons of colour right when there isnt much in the garden
My understanding is that the bulbs will eventually find their own ideal depth/position during growth ie - moving up or down slightly - somehow !?
Thank you very much
thanks Judit
Is this possible to do for spring into summer? Like spring bulbs towards the top and summer bulbs lower?
Which month should I start this process in uk please?
What do you do with all the bulbs after summer when all have bloomed? I know some bulbs come back year after year but the bottom layer of tulips will need to be dug up to come back is that correct? Wouldn't that mean you have to dig up everything since they are on the bottom? Thanks!
Allow to die back and feed they will come back the following year. these have bloomed since the date of this video
@@simplifygardening thank you - does this apply to lily flowering tulips? or do you only dig up if they are planted in the ground, and no need if they are planted in the container? thank you so much
Hi Tony could I reuse my potato compost to grow my tulip and daffodil bulbs in pots
Yes there is a video about reusing compost just type that into the search and add simplify at the end
Yes donald it would be fine\
Hi Tony, can you use those bulbs again next year , or do you buy fresh ?
Yes David but dont cut the tops leave them to die back as that feeds the bulbs, then lift the bulbs and replant them in frash compost
@@simplifygardening nice one, thanks for the reply.
Anytime David :)
Hi: what the of the year should I prepare the lasagne bulb container? I live in southern Ontario, Canada.
You gave me a great idea for a New years gift for my Grandmother, I ordered Narcis Green eyes / Galanthus flore Pleno / Crocus vernus jeanne d'arc / Tulp greenstar and Allium Amplectens. (she likes the green and white flowers)
I do hope it works else i just gave here a big flowerpot for weeds :D
Bram, It will be one of the best presents she will ever receive once it starts to flower
Have planted a large mixture of Narcissuses, tulips, hyacinths and alliums in the back garden, mostly in the ground but also a few containers.
Should have a good showing
That will be great Ant, be sure to show us the results when they come up mate
Can I leave this outside in the cold New England winter months? If it is in a garage, when to bring it outside after rugged winters of sometimes subzero (F) and snow?
Yes mine were out all winter and came back this spring no problems
Hi Tony! Great video! I live in Dallas TX USDA zone 8a, pretty hot here. I was wondering if I plant some seeds, maybe mustard, since I like their flowers on top of my bulb lasagna, will this prevent the bulbs below from getting enough sun? My plan now is to use some daffodils on the bottom and some spider Lilies closer to the top. Daffodils bloom in March here, the Spider lilies will come up the end of summer, also I want to keep the Spider lilies away from my dogs, since I just read that these bulbs are poisonous, thus the container idea is good, it will be outside my fenced area. I caught the puppy digging up and eating one of my other spring bulbs! Ahhh!
Hi Yvonne, thats a great idea. we are 8a here too but dont quite get as much heat as you
Hi Tony Watched your video regarding the Qualcast shredder and liked the fact you were running it off a generator Can you please be so kind and let me know what size generator you were using The reason i am asking is because i already have a generator on my allotment and it would be great if i could run a shredder off of it Many Thanks Pete
Hi Pete, I have a 4.5HP honda generator thats what I use to power the shredder and the soil sifter
It would have been nice if you have showed us what it looks like when they all bloomed.
Great video! just found your channel... will be working my way through your other videos :) fabulous Lasagne method.... can't go wrong :D :)
Hey Lottie. Welcome to the channel. Thanks for subscribing, Might take you a while to get through 370 videos but I am sure you will find some tips in there somewhere, We have a great community in the comments section who share additional tips knowledge and experiences about the videos so it's worth checking them out and leaving your own comments too. Thanks for this one and hope you enjoy the channel. Tony
do these bloom year on year or do we have to plant bulbs every year???
These have bloomed each year since I made them in 2018 and they are poking their heads already for next year
Tony, I just found your channel ... love it. So informative. I live in Virginia, United States. I'm definitely goning to plant up two pots of "bulb lasagna" this September.
My only question, do you think the primrose will thrive in a US zone 7 over the winter?
Awesome! Thank you!
@@simplifygardening I'm wondering about winter care, in Zone 7, as well. Do the pots need to be taken indoors or in a greenhouse during the winter?
I ordered a bunch of bulbs, with this very thing in mind, not knowing if it would actually work. SOOO glad I found your video!
Will be giving the pots as Christmas gifts to the kids... and to myself!!
But now I need to know how to care for them, during the winter, please! THANKS!
In all the other diagrams I've seen of this, the daffodils go on the bottom and the tulips are the next layer up (the reverse of what you have here) does it make a difference? If so, why do you prefer this way round? Thanks!
Interesting!
Hi. Did you show in any other video the result of this sowing?
Yes, but for the life of me I cant remember the video
Lovely video Tony. Can i ask. I have a new tunnel I just built but have no soil. Is it ok just to use compost to get going? I know I'll have to buy a good bit but choices are scarce. I used to use growbags for the last while but decided to expand. Thanks for the great videos. Always enjoyable
Tom Hickey what have you got to lose ? Give it a go. If it doesn't work...try something different next time.
Hey Tom, Yes you can use just compost but remember you will need to feed it a lot. I would recommend trying to get hold of topsoil or manure over the next year to add after your first year though, but it will allow you to get started which is the most important thing
Great answer Edie people sometimes are afraid of trying things in case they fail
@@simplifygardening thanks mate I'll get going so :)
