Tengo el libro " Cuentos de Derviches" en español y no conocía al autor. La entrevista se parece a muchos de los cuentos... Nada dicho directamente, pero dejando enseñanzas y mensajes ocultos.
I had once been genuinely interested in Sufism-but was very disappointed by my failure to meet a suitable teacher.Idries Shah says that mixing the sufi current with other spiritualities is 'shoring up'.But I discovered a long time back that Muslim Sufis insist on conversion to Islam as a precondition to following the path.I follow a spirituality called Nichiren Buddhism now and it says that it can open the path of incorporating Sufi principles within my life without my having to go on the perilous journey of looking for a guide. If a person were to 'give up' his spirituality to enter the Sufi path, what would happen if the Sufi guide turns out to be unsuitable for him?I think that Sufism can co-exist with other spiritualities.
shah was a fraud, an impostor who just wanted to make money. He smoked himself to death at a relatively early age. what kind of master can't give up cigarettes which I did long ago. I should be his teacher.
And you still here. Listening 👂🏼 Listen at the beginning,he even said here in this interview. Its not about him its most importantly is about his work.
Understand how different teachers are connected with different people. Just for the fyi.. There were many investigations on Idries Shah to try to get some dirt on him.. and they could find nothing. Many years ago I had the chance to meet him.. on what is called a by-location.. it was in a cafe and I was only 18 years old. I find him one of the most authentic human beings I have ever met.. but that is me. Everyone has their own opinion. Blessings.🌷☘️🌷
the sufi i knew and was involved with was a plastic surgeon from Turkey. His teacher had met idries shah. I asked him what his teacher, Hassan Shushud, thought of shah and he said, "Sadly, he didn't think much of him. He said he mainly seemed interested in making a lot of money." Like this, listen to it, he doesn't really say anything of any real help. It's all general and when you analyze it just a bunch of nothing. He never gives out with anything of any worth, just vague utterances that make him sound like some sort of super teacher but it never turns into anything except more of his silly books. this stuff about not being a guru etc. it's just a clever con that explains why he never does anything but selling books. it's just junk. it's all junk. now he's bragging about how many books he's sold. he died a long time ago? what came from all this? nothing nothing nothing. it's a con.
It is clear that you have never really studied Shah's writings. They are difficult, especially if you are looking for the kind of glib, easy answers that attract the more superficial. It took me many decades but when they began to fall together I realised that the only thing that had prevented me from understanding them previously was -- as he points out again and again -- my own wrong assumptions. I can imagine Shah presenting an image of a money grabber to Shushud to shake him off -- in fact he refers openly to this technique in one of his books.
It’s clear that you, yourself have spent little or no time actually reading the material put forth in the Sufi corpus. Books like “Learning How To Learn”-Idries Shah “Tales of The Dervishes”-Idries Shah “The Sufis”-Idries Shah “The People Of The Secret-Ernest Scott “Among The Dervishes” - OM Burke These should help you develop a better understanding of what Idries Shah is really trying to leave us with, practical knowledge with a practical application. “The Science of Selflessness” is certainly not about making money, to the contrary, it’s focus is to be of assistance to your fellow man; the situation and it’s needs as it were. This work begins with being of service your fellow man… Not monetary gain.
yes, his books are now available to read or listen to for free, but it's just a cash grab, and nothing came of ot if you ignore that it helped significantly to popularize Sufi ideas in the west.
You are unfair. Idries Shah is not responsible for the mess we are in nowadays. Idries Shah himself did a great and unique work in life which was to collect Sufi traditions and master and their works and put them out for the western world. Actually he saves lot of people lot of life time by having done this fundamental ground works.

“ They make carpets better in the East and tweed better in Scotland.” This man is everything I should strive to emulate.
Man his voice is easy to listen to, he's like a sufi Alan Watts.
Master of Master
