Your husband is a blessed man! You woman go!
We buy metal 6 gallon cans from Tractor Supply to store our food. We live in hay country, so when the fields are mown, the mice start looking for a new home.
We learned long ago that mice can chew through plastic buckets!
Are the lids metal also???
Yes, mice will eat through plastic and other food packaging (that's quite easy to eat through). Bad enough that they eat the food, but then....... POOP EVERYWHERE!!!
I get 6 gallon pickle buckets from a local BBQ place. They go through a lot of pickles and this BBQ place uses the 6 gallon. I use them for everything including plants.
Put bay leaves in the bottom of the bucket to deter any creepy crawlies sniffing around.
@Trini Baby I know some people add diatomaceous earth also.
@Trini Baby No problem. I don't know much about it myself.
Diotomecious earth is a very effective insect control substance, farmers have used it for years dusting poultry and poultry sheds to eliminate bugs, it even works on ants, best thing is it's not toxic if swallowed in food *the dust however is hazardous to lungs so be careful with it and wear a spray painters mask at least*
Food grade diatmaous earth not what is used in pools(chemicals toxic). The diatmaous earth is dried shells & cause insects to dry out.
@Trini 37 has to be food grade DE. Just sayin 😍
I just put my flour.. rice..sugar..dry beans other dry goods right in the bucket and seal it..ive never used Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers..the most I've ever saved it is 5 yrs past the date and the food was still great and im contantly rotating my buckets..great video
Is it safe to keep it in a garage or crawl space?
I prep a few pressure cookers as well as pressure canners. Older beans tend to do ok when cooked in a pressure cooker/canner.
@@coachbarb42 heat is one of the enemy when storing food for long term. The cooler the temperature the longer your food will last.
@@prayplanprepare3978 Thank you, that makes sense.
Good to know that your food is still good after 5 years. I have put rice in food grade buckets before without Mylar bags, but I did use oxygen absorbers. The lid sucked down very tightly, so I know that it took a good seal. I do prefer to use both mylars and O2's most of the time though.
I've been reusing my 35 lb. Tidy Cat kitty litter buckets for small bags of grains, legumes, flour and sugar. It's just me so I don't get huge bags, just 5 and 10 lbs. Washed out, dried and filled the buckets.
I have stacks of 35lb Tidy Cat kitty litter buckets in my garage and was trying to figure out what I could do to re-use them. Thanks for this idea, Donna!
You can purchase large clear food grade bags on Amazon since tidy cat containers are not food grade.
They also make great container gardens. I drill drain holes in the bottom.
@@elizabethcope1502 if you’re using Mylar it doesn’t matter if it’s not good grade
Are those food grade? I have like six saved but wanted to find out if food could be stored in them.
That little hole that is open, I use a vacuum cleaner with a tea towel on the end and stick it in a little to suck the air out completely and then seal under and around the hole.
That's cool. I'll try that.
I do mine in smaller Mylar so I only open what I need at the time
I take out the absorbers needed and reseal the package with a hair straightener. Works fine and no messin' around with jars.
This was VERY helpful thanks
How long after expire date can you use powdered lemonade, tang, hot cocoa, gatorade, chocolate milk mix.
Thanks for the tips .
The worst thing about accidentally using an oxygen absorber in a pouch/bag of sugar isn't the fact you get a brick of sugar (easy enough to break down again) it's that the sugar absorbs a metallic flavor that not even burnt coffee can hide, I've successfully vacuum packed sugar in brick shape molds to make stacking it easier on the shelving units I use.
Good to know! Thanks for the info!
@@woodsie5796 no problem, best use of UA-cam is sharing knowledge and experience, I'm not skilled in teaching or even making videos but if I know something about a subject I try to help others, and sugar really did taste horrible after an oxysorb packet was added 🤣 luckily it was only a 2kg or 41/2lb pouch I messed up.
When I seal sugar in Mylar and buckets I always just push the air out as much as possible and just iron it shut. I have about 300 pounds in Mylar bags and buckets, 25 pounds in each bucket.
@@davidgraemesmith1980 Thanks, Dave, however, now I worry about my dogs and birds as their food always contain oxygen absorbers :(
@@siboneypeltier2307 it's the granular sugar and salt that absorb the "rusty" taste, I've never had jerky or even sesame snaps stored with oxygen absorbers taste funny, I asked a food science lecturer about it years ago and he said something like
"it is the porosity of the granules and the lack of oxygen available to start with in tightly packed sugar or salt, we've done lots of research into storing food long term, some things just need to be kept dry"
Jinne, you are amazing. Thank you and Happy 4th.🇺🇸🌸💕
Jenny, I really enjoy your videos! I began prepping in 2019 and my husband and daughter think that I am crazy. Although, when my daughter was cooking the other day and asked if we had honey, we did! I never would have had that in the house before! When we had a graduation party I was able to grab extra plates and napkins, same with ketchup with those bins down in the cellar, that my husband had complained about getting shelves for. They don't realize how convenient it is not to have to run out to the store. You have supplies on hand. Thanks for your inspirational videos, I've learned a lot.God bless you and your family!
I don't know if your buckets are the same as mine, but I get mine for FREE from the grocery store's bakery department!
Great info! I'm going to ask at my store.
My walmart doesnt do that anymore
My grocery stores won’t even sell them to us
@@stephaniknight5809 same here and they are mean about it too
@Lynn Maust.
Hey Lynn. What store are you getting them from??
Oh my goodness this actually worked!! I called my local H‑E‑B and Whataburger and they gave them to us for free!! Thank you so much for the tip!!
Like your shirt. Great video
You don't want to use pickle buckets....it takes about a year out side to get the smell out of the bucket...you can clean them but there is still the residual smell....the vinegar smell will get absorbed into your food...
You can get food grade buckets and lids at WalMart but you have to watch for when the get in...my store sells them for $2.96 each and lids for $1.28...
Soak with some baking soda then wash again see if that helps? Sometimes I may have to repeat but I think it works pretty well.
Perfect timing. Working I’m getting some 5 gallon buckets filled up next week! 🤩
This has really helped me with being prepped for hurricane season! Elsa has become the earliest E storm on record. I don’t have to go and try to shop and get caught up in the last minute panic.
Same here. I'm in south Georgia and have been checking the radar for about four hours but, it looks like thunderstorms is the worst we'll see.

That’s excellent. It’s dangerous to be running around to prep for a storm.
I'm so excited you've done this video. I just bought four, five Gallon food grade buckets at my local Tractor Supply store yesterday. I needed to know how to store my rice in them. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the demo! I had read instructions for doing this, but seeing it done helps me feel more confident about doing it myself.
Azure Standard may be an even more economical option for wheat berries.
Love Azure Standard
We don't have azure so I use LDS. LOVE IT.
@@audreynanapreps2543 what is the LDS website to order?
Thank you for the help. I like your channel; always teaching new and interesting ways of preparing.
Very helpful. This prepping stuff is a whole new world for me. Living in LA County during the pandemic has been an eye opener. Time to prepare!
Always nice not to need a hammer/chisel for food prep lol. Hard sugar sugar sucks
I think I'll stick with small amounts packaged. I realize that there are air pockets but as a single person, I don't want, or have the ability to use, 25lbs of anything at one time. I always package foods for long-term the same way I set up my freezer. Enough for me for a couple different meals, because I can open more than one if needed but once they are opened, they need used.
God bless u, for showing us, the steps.
U do so much, and I am sure, u r greatly appreciated. Thanks again. 🙏❤️🌟👍👏🌹✝️
Thank you for showing your process, this was very helpful!
Nice
Thank you for this information. Have a happy & safe weekend 🇺🇸🎉
So glad you showed us. Thanks
Great video! Seeing you do this hands-on helps me learn how to seal with the hair iron. Thanks!
I love watching your videos.. so informative!❤
Has anyone looked in to buying mylar in rolls? Being so easy to seal (just taking people's word for it since I haven't actually used them before), seems like it would be easy enough to make bags from a roll, and "maybe" cheaper??? A little bit of nickel wire and a pretty simple circuit would be easy to build a temperature controlled press to seal them and s good paper cutter and these things could be rolled out to whatever sizes we need with very little waste.
I know this vid is 2 years old but I just wanted to say thank you!
i couldnt find the wheat berries locally either so i ordered the 25 lb bag so im going to look up lds cannery now i never even got to try my grain mill yet
I’d love to know where you got the Buckwheat Groats❤️ And if you have any recipes for them as well. I’d love to see that. Thanks I enjoy all your sharing with us. 🙋🏻♀️
Wow! That was easy! Thanks for the demo!
Great. More great info.
Thanks for the education.
WOW !! Thank you for the info ! Your awesome thanks Jinne 😊

Thank you! I'm learning so much!
Thank you for this video, so helpful!!
Good tips , thanks for sharing , God bless !
o.k. the price hike is really happening in our area El Paso Texas and New Mexico I went shopping and my jaw dropped. EVERYTHING we bought like creamer was 36 cents higher milk is $3.00 a half gallon. We did get hamburger for $1.81 a lb. but everything else is 36 cents higher I was prepared, but a week ago we went into the city and it was regular price. Go to BIG LOTS they have a end cap on one of their isles and the clearance is there. I go Kashi honey toasted oat cereal for 35 cents a box. it expires next month so I prepared it for long term. I pray for all of us who are on a short budget. I just retired and get 1/3 of my paycheck as a pension, so if I can do it you can too and Dumpster shop where you can. Dollar General is really big on throwing away kids clothing and under wear if someone pokes a hole in the package.
Thank you for all your video’s. Fun to watch and very informative.❤️
Thank you for the demo. Always great information
Pretty please make a video on when to use oxygen absorbers. If we vacuum seal pasta in bags or jars, yes or no? Salt, dry beans, rice? I have so many foods to prepare for long term storage and I’m so confused on when to use oxygen absorbers that nothing is getting done.
don't need ox absorbers in salt or sugar. Salt should get a plastic lid when storing in jars. I vacuum seal pasta, rice, beans and anything else I get get away with in Jars without ox absorbers. You can add them if you want but you don't have to. I mainly use them when I store foods in the glass jars with clam shell lids because you can't vacuum seal those. Don't let it overwhelm you. Just buy a few food items at a time and package those and store then start over with the next few. I do agree it is a lot of work and people who don't do this don't realize what a job it is.
I must admit I have to just use vacuum sealing bags, milar bags are ridiculously expensive in the UK. I have managed to find buckets (without gamma lid) for just under £7 (just under £10)
I vacuum seal for smaller quantities also, it works great!💕🇺🇲
I was wondering what and how to do that. Thank you so much!!! I am thinking I might need to do that for some of the extra cat food, dog and bird stuff I get as well.
Dried cat and dog food contain high amounts of fats, sadly even sealed up they can go rancid, and don't last much longer than the expiration dates. Canned pet food , although more expensive, will last much longer. 💕
Excellent video!!
Good video and great info! Happy 4th! 🤗💥🇺🇸
Good vid n' Great idea with the hair straightener
Can reseal bag of oxygen absorbers with an iron as well as the mylar bags
Love your videos! Thanks for showing the basics. Hope it cools down for your holiday weekend. Happy 4th of July!
Just a question…can’t you put in a food grade bucket with a gamma lid with oxygen absorbers?? Skipping the Mylar bags.
Yes, as long as it's a food grade bucket and air tight lid, you can skip the mylar. 💕🇺🇸
It won't last as long!
@@HomesteadCorner thank you, I think it’s sort of a trade off between gamma lids and Mylar bags…they’re both a little pricey but that’s what I got! And my buckets are all food grade. ♥️👍🙏🇺🇸🤓
@@ng3069 I will probably be long gone before they go bad…🙏🥲
I've been praying and prepping.😂🙏😇 Plz tell this city girl who loves America and Jesus🤪 how I can purchase this? Do I go to Home Depot today because I hear we're being hit tomorrow? Just w the trial you know what. Ugh trusting and doing my best! Love you all!
I approached my bag wrong--went horizontally--you have a better method with the flat iron. I don't know why, but it was in my head to go horizontally instead of like you did. This is why your video was so good; I really needed someone to tell me what to do.
I do everything just like you. 👍😀. Happy 4th of July to you and your family. 💙
Excellent vid!!!😊😊😊
Great video!
I love all your vids 😘😘😁👍
If anyone is just starting out or on a budget, call your local grocery/bakery/deli and ask if they have any. I just picked up 2 5 gallon and 3 2 gallon food grade buckets from my local bakery today free.
This was great info. Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
Saw another video where the content creator mixed food grage diatomaceious earth (D.E.) to beans, wheat, rice, to help deal with insects. The d.e. was mixed in smaller bucket and a clean concrete mixing paddled was used to mix the 2 thing together. A facemask was used to reduce/elimate breathing in the d.e. to the lungs. The mixed food were placed into mylar bags which were then sealed.
I am not sure how to process the wheat to turn it into flour, how would you package yeast for baking bread. Thank You
Awesome 👍
I just put my grains into the bucket with a big chunk of dry ice, oxygen and moisture absorbers, with the top on but not sealed. Then the CO2 fills the bucket, displaces the air, at which point I seal the lid.
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
When would you use these food items?
Thank you for sharing these ideas with us out here! I am not savy as too the mylar bags but will look them up to see who sells them! I am wondering if it is easier, (Since it appears you had a few inches left to the top of the bucket) if putting in a plastic measuring cup or wooden spoons - spices in glad bags would also be helpful should you not have adequate utensils?? cups to help with mixing portions - zip lock bag with several packets of gravy mix -even paper items needed for cooking as well as making good use of that extra room??
Hello Jinne 😀
How many 500 O2 absorbers did you use in each bag?
You recently came across my feed and I've been bingeing on your smart ideas! Where's the best place to get the buckets for the best bang? Keep up the great work! Happy Independence Day! God bless the USA 🇺🇸
@@nanmaco Thanks so much! What a great idea!
So much great information! I've just recently discovered your channel and love your inspiration! Thanks for all that you do!!
Very well done....
Food grade diatomaceous earth can be used on some foods...such as rice, dry beans, corn, wheat etc..you can eliminate your O2absorbers and the mylar bags...
I wash it off the beans and rice before preparing to cook...You don't have too because food grade diatomaceous earth is good for you...
That's neat how you seal those mylar bags...thanks on the tip on how to remove the markers with rubbing alcohol 😊
The screw on lids do seal really well compared to clamp on lids...
FYI in the deli at grocery stores they have a lot of buckets that they throw away...
Pharmacist will save the Oxygen absorbers for you if you request them to...they generally throw them away...The Pharmacist do wear gloves when handling the meds.
I still have bucket of wheat since Y2K...Montana Wheat...still sealed in their buckets...
DE is a must have, also great internally for parasites, for humans and animals. 💕🇺🇸
@@HomesteadCorner do you have the website of the LDS.
Also, where did you get your food grade diatomaceous earth?
I keep stressing food grade because there is a nonfood grade diatomaceous earth I used in my dog lot and garden keeps out the fleas and garden pests...
Glad I found your site 🇺🇸

Food grade is more expensive than nonfood grade...
I'm not trying to be a Smart Aleck, it's just that the non-food is not safe to ingest.
I'll check it out...It would be great if I could purchase it there..

I’ve spent so much time and money yet I can’t figure out what’s wrong and tj from tj preps when she first started she stopped becuz of the same thing. I need to do it this way. I got mason jars filled up the kazoo I don’t know what else I cando
I meant oxy absorbers… Darn phone
@@nanmaco I will try that. Thankyou
I know what you are going through. My last 3 orders of oxygen absorbers from Amazon were useless. Out of 200 plus absorbers 4 did their job. Not a very good return on my investment. I had to repackage everything that contained the absorbers. I ended up investing in mason jars and food saver bags, vaccum sealing those instead of ordering more worthless absorbers and then storing the items in buckets and storage containers..
Do you beed a mylar bag?
just the tip
Have you had a problem with weevils? Or any bugs? How can I not get them or to eliminate them
Thanks! Where did you find buckets?
Is it OK to put baking soda in mylar bags? With oxygen absorbers?
How can you tell if & when the absorb pks go bad?
Most of them come with a colored indicator, so you can see if they are used up.
Curious if you have any knowledge on temperature changes. The only place I can store food is in my shed, which probably gets over 100 degrees in summer and below freezing in winter. I am storing dried goods and various store bought canned goods.
Extremely temps either way can damage your food, the dry goods will probably fair better than the can goods, but I would definitely try to get them in a more controlled area, 40-65 degrees is ideal.
@@HomesteadCorner Thank you for the responses.
50-70- degrees must be in a cool DARK PLACE, ROOM. HEAT WILL RUIN YOUR FOODS.
@@lindaandersonperez2435 what happens if the grid goes down and you can no longer store your food in perfect temperatures?
Do wheat berries and dried corn need to go into the freezer like flour, rice etc?
You can for peace of mind, but not needed. Once you put the oxygen absorbers in the buckets it'll kill any eggs/critters when the oxygen goes away.
I buy the 2 1/2 gallon buckets from the Walmart bakery. I can not carry the large buckets full of food.
Did you ever consider making your own oxygen absorbers with salt and brillo?
That is an interesting combination.
@@KarenAllisonrc The salt pulls the moisture and the steel wool oxidizes. You put them in a homemade tea bag. I first heard of it on Natural News, but there are lots of videos out on how to do it. DIY saves $$$.
Hello 👋
With all the extra space at the top of your Mylar bags why don't you do smaller bags on top that you could use for bartering or if someone needed help? I just think it is wasted storage space.
Where can I get a bucket opener? Great video Jennie.🌞🌞🌞

Sugar lasts long time when stored like this? Tyvm for links too! Cant find oxygen absorbers locally. Tyvm

Heck ya !! Good stuff.
Date, item, weight in sharpie on the bucket. The cooking and nutrition labels get cut off the original packaging and go on top between the Mylar and bucket. It might be one of my kids or grandkids that use it should I not make it and I want to leave them the info.
As you stated NO O2 absorbers in salt n sugar or spices or koolaid/tang cause it can make it hard.
I put labels in large orange binder. This is stored in pantry with other prep tool binders. I have a binder on kerosene to go with my cook stoves, lanterns, & lamps. Another binder has my solar oven info & other items books. My kids know about them.
@@elizabethcope1502 I’ve just got inventory scribbled on paper. Maybe one day I’ll get to where you are with binders
So whe i do this, the only thing i do different, is that i use one of the "air matress inflator/deflator" to remove the oxygen before sealing the end. Is there a con to this?
Does flour store well long term?
I just checked the price of white buckets at our grocery store. They've gone from 3.86 a bucket to 5.84 a bucket now. And couldn't find any at Home Depot.
Is it ok to not use those fancy milar bags if you're rotating through your buckets within 2 years? I can fit quite a bit more food in the buckets this way, saving bucket space and money (35-40lb). Oh I think you just answered my question (still watching the video). I use air tight gasket lids, so I dump the food straight into the bucket. And food grade.
There is a natural way to keep crawlers out of your buckets when you can't use bags/absorbers. I found out from a depression era grandmother, that bay leaves work wonders. I had a huge accident order bag of them to test at the time. So I figured why not, I use it for Sugar/Flour/Rice, I layer a few leaves every few inches and it's worked. Even keep a few leaves in my kitchen cabinets, and they smell so good now.
