Worked at the local drive-in as a young man. Sold tickets at the front booth and worked concessions at the intermission. Good times, Good times. Long gone now. Thanks for the memories.
What a great memory, thanks for sharing with us! Those were terrific jobs for teens & 20-somethings back then. In the '70s and early '80s I used to dream of owning a drive in theater. Would have loved it.

Are used to build floats for the parade in Pasadena for New Year’s Day. Now I am a white shooter on their committee. For the 1993 Rose Parade the city of Long Beach had a float in the parade made up of five little individual satellite floats. One was a drink cup the other was popcorn the other was a hotdog the other was a hamburger and the title of the float was called “ Intermission”
Spent most of my youth at drive-in double bills and as many as 5 in one night(the all nighters). Blissful times. Horror. Sci-Fi. Kung Fu. Disney. It was just a great time to be alive and everything seemed bright and amazing.
Great Drive In double feature. I remember Friday and Saturday date nights at the Drive In in my 1957 Ford Fairlane 500. Steam those windows up.
Hell yeah! Our family had a '57 Fairlane 500 also. It was light beige and dark beige 2 tone and we went everywhere in that thing!
Mine was convertible white with a black and white interior with a black rag top. I bought it for 450 dollars in February of my junior year in high school, 1965. I still have a photo of me with my 57 Ford on the wall of my mancave.
@@wallacegeller2111 It sounds beautiful! That car had a great profile. We loved ours but mom accidentally burned out motor when it developed sudden oil leak and oil light didn't go off. :(
I'm sorry your Ford hit the dust. I sold mine to a friend just before I went into the Marines. My friend later sold it and one time I was home on leave in my dad's car. I was stopped at traffic light and low and behold a car pulled up next to me at the red light. It was my Ford and a young man who looked high school age was driving it. We both drove off and he turned off. I knew it was my old Ford.
These were both enjoyable in their special B movie sci- fi way
Best part of the drive-in movie in the 1960s when I grew up was the snack bar and a playground below the screen that was open till it got dark enough to see the film. Children of today are really missing fond memories like this.
I remember that, too. One by us even had a laundromat on the grounds. We'd come early to get a good parking spot and eat. The kids played on the playground while some of the moms did the laundry. Then the sun went down, the cars poured in and we'd pile in to see the show. Great memories!
There was a time when you were encouraged to get out of the house and go play or ride your bike
Imagine how much fun these were on a big screen!

I do have an CUSTOM MADE EIGHTY SIX INCH SCREEN TELEVISION THAT I USE FOR THE WALL IN MY PRIVATE THEATER AT MY HOUSE.
They were GREAT!

All screens are big nowadays. Your field of vision is better now than any distant "big" screen. From 200 ft, a 30 ft screen was small.
50 years later and Fiend Without A Face still gives me the screaming abdabs! LOL. it's the heartbeat sound..... LOVE IT!
Saw this with friends as a child. We talked about it for days afterwards, reliving our favorite parts. It really made an impression on us and the brain creatures were just about the most gruesome thing we'd ever seen. Still love it!

Wow! This is a great idea..should have more views considering the lockdowns. Intermission is great for a snack break.
Wow - the last time I saw this movie was back in the mid 60’s at the local theater Saturday matinee.The theatre was a 10 minute walk and it cost 30 cents admission. My mom would give me 50 cents and she’d be able to bet ride of me all Saturday afternoon - what a deal!! With 50 cents I’d pay the admission - plus be able to buy a soda and a candy bar. Those were the days. Sometimes they even showed 2 movies.Amazing - I have NEVER been able to see this on regular TV.

Marshall Thompson is always great. I'm 63 yo, a sci-fi fan and never saw First Man in Space before...thanks for posting. Very good flick. Drive-ins were such a great adventure. Burned into my memory.

I remember this movie from my childhood. I first saw this in the late 70s on TV. We all remember local programming back in the day especially Friday nights & weekend horror / creature feature shows would broadcast these atomic age sci-fi horror cult gems 💎. Low budget with shall we say indifferent SFX, but still a lot fun to watch with family & friends. “ First man into space “ isn’t bad @ all...decent story & monster. Definitely popcorn 🍿 movies 🎥. “ Fiend without a face” is watchable as well. A Marshall Thompson double feature!

the old sci-fi's are the best i remember going to the snack bar/bathroom and hoping that i didnt forget where the car was parked
I agree! One of the drive ins near us (I think it was the Bel Aire), had a speaker in the snack bar, so you could hear the countdown clock. Or if you came during the movie, you'd still have an idea what was going on. About 10 minutes into the second feature, the staff would patch into the theater speakers with "the snack bar will be closing in 5 minutes" announcement. Great times!

Thanks for sharing this double feature films the old films are brilliant & so are the creature effects those brains with tentacles were funny looking but they were a great creature for the year, I'd like to see the original wolfman & Vincent price wax museum.
Watched so many of these movies when I was young loved them, watching today after years of not seeing them still love them 👍❤️👍

I saw both films at the age of ten back in 1958 and was petrified in that dark theatre. Now 62 yrs later I still recall that experience in my darken living room with a bowl of popcorn and a bottle of ginger ale. RIP Marshall Thompson

Great moments of nostalgic memories on Friday nights at our local drive-in theater!
I can remember the cherished fami.y times, when my sisters and I would usually run up to the playground, situated right under the huge movie screen, minutes before the first feature would begin! My Dad would always send at least two of us out to the concession stand for the hot dogs, burgers and fries and one of us would carry the drinks back to our car in one of those cardboard beverage caddie trays. Boy! Do I ever miss those golden days of youth!

What beautiful memories, I love it! I remember the same things, too...On summer days when we or one of our neighbors was going, you'd see everyone piling into the station wagon while still daylight, the kids in footie pajamas. Other times the kids would be dressed in day clothes so they could play in the playground while music was piped in on the theater speakers. I remember after the second movie started mom would remind us the concession stand was still open, but only for about 15 or 20 minutes into the second feature. So we'd dash down and get our goodies then enjoy the show. If we fell asleep in the back seat (it was late for us!) we'd be carried into the house and put to bed afterwards...such happy times!
We were not allowed to go to the playground. Once we arrived at the theatre we remained in the station wagon for the duration. Brought drinks and a grocery sack of popcorn from home.

Yes, I agree with your comments about the Fiend Without a Face, it is a scary movie. It's my favorite. My most favorite other movie is The First Man into Space. It's sad, because I couldn't help for that same military test pilot who went to space for a second time. And his ship went out of control in deep space. The pilot gotten hit by a meteor which spread particles of meteor dust and radiation burned 100% of his body, turning him into a murdering and marauding monster back on earth.

Drive the car up in position on the hump, role down the window , grab the aluminum cased speaker off the post and hang it on the door window- just in time for the cartoon in full color splashed across that huge screen !

When the drive-in wasn't crowded, you could split the difference between two speaker posts and have mock stereo!
If we went in a pickup, we'd park backwards and sit on the tailgate or in lawn chairs or a beat-up old sofa in the bed of the truck.

That Delta 88 Olds was our family car up until 1963. Man I remember road trips and napping on the back dash of that beast. Weekends at the Drive-In theaters, and dad scaring my brother and me on the way home, by making those monster sounds.
The Delta 88 name was not used until 1965.
Oldsmobile's 88 series began in 1949 with introduction of the 303 inch 'Rocket' overhead valve V8 engine which replaced the 78 Series with its 'Straight Eight'. The original 88 had the same 'B Body' found on six cylinder equipped 76 series, yet with the new OHV V8 engine of larger 98 models and the Olds' Futuramic (automatic) transmission.
For 1950 the Super 88 name was introduced for upgrade 88s as the six cylinder (76 series) was dropped entirely as were Olds' station wagons. The 1953 lineup (only) dubbed the base 88 as DeLuxe 88 while retaining Super 88 for the upscale edition (I had a 1953 Super 88). Manual transmissions became available on order though few were, as would be the case for several years aft
The DeLuxe reverted to simply 88 for 1954 as Super continued. Both had the increased displacement 324 'Rocket' V8 with 2 barrel carb 88 and 4 barrel Super 88. Horsepowere was increased across both series for 1955 and the new pilarless hardtops were dubbed 88 Holiday. When I was a young'n I often saw drive in movies from Mom's Holiday. The same names were used in 1956, horsepower increased, transmission upgraded to 'Jetaway Hydra Matic.
Horsepower was again increased for 1957 as displacement was raised to 371 and a triple deuce J2 option was offered. For 1957 only the base model was 'Golden 88' as the Super 88 continued. Fiesta Station wagons returned to the Olds' lineup.
Dynamic 88 was the name applied to base model Oldsmobiles in 1958 and would be through 1966 as the Super 88 continued through 1964 while 88 Starfire, a fully optioned sport convertible 88, was introduced in 1961 and Jetstar 88, a budget friendly version, joined the 88 lineup in 1964 along with Vista Cruiser wagons to replace the former Fiesta.
The Delta 88 premiered in 1965, replacing Super 88. The name was inspired by the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger jet fighter aircraft. I had a 1973 Delta 88 for a while in the early 1980s.

There were model names among the series, Delta was not one of them.
The Delta name was first used by Oldsmobile for the 1965 model year.

When I was a kid the Thing from another world, this movie , it the TERROR from Beyond Space, and Fiend without a face scared the shit outta me, the only thing scarier than them was when I first saw Alfred Hitchcock !!! Talk about scary I had a nightmare about Alfred Hitchcock as Santa Claus ! Too much for a kid to handle !😎

Watching "The First Man into Space" was a trip back in time for me. I first saw it @ the Tivoli theater in Richmond, Indiana almost 60 years ago.

I so remember going with my big sister to the RKO Orpheum in Champaign, IL on Saturday afternoon and seeing these B monster-sci-fi movies. For less than $1 one could see a double feature, get a big box of popcorn, candy bar or box of candy, and a soft drink. This, Cyclops and The Lost Missile are three totally memorable shows as they scared me to death and gave me nightmares for a week. That was around 1956-9.
Don't forget, The Beast from 20,000 fathoms, Reptilicus, The Phantom Planet, etc. etc.

Isn't it unbelievable? It would be like people in 1958 watching movies made in 1895. Only now the decades seem so much smaller!

Another soon to be dated movie is " Beyond the time barrier" 1960.
In the film a test pilot ends up on Earth of 2024, devastated by the cosmic plague. Only. a hand full of survivors exist.
There's something wrong with the Navy commander. He's wearing a Captains hat. He only has three stripes.

A Commander in the US Navy, a rank equivalent equivalent to that of Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, wears three bars and an embroidered hat. The Navy’s equivalent of field-grade officers in the other military branches under Department of Defense command are its mid-grade Officers, Commander and Captain; ornamentation on the White Combination Cap worn by mid-grade Commanders and Captains reflects their status in the command chain above junior-grade Officers.
I remember a British one that was very similar to this where are the astronaut came back to earth and the man was pretty self aware of what was going on and he smashed a cactus in his room any ultimately was electrocuted
Trivia. In FMIS, the Mexican Consul is played by Roger Delgado. He was the first actor to play The Master in "Doctor Who".
In a 1971 episode of DW, the Brigadier reassures The Doctor not to worry as the suspected sighting of The Master "was only the Spanish Ambassador".
Now he was a good "Master"...
Also, the hot Italian scientist found herself in a much less substantial rôle in Hammer's 1959 Hound of the Baskervilles as Stapleton's unaccountably Italian (though born and brought up in Spain) daughter.

Back when hot dogs tasted delicious. Buns were baked all the way brown, without all the crap chemicals and softeners and preservatives. I up-voted this video because of the snack bar. Those were the days, folks!

I remember seeing "The First Man Into Space" on WUAB Ch. 43 (Lorain/Cleveland, OH) back in 1970, on The Superhost (Marty Sullivan) TV show. I hadn't seen that film since 1960. Good old Superhost (thanks). I remember being scared by the mutated form of Lt. Dan Prescott, but I was also bummed out when he died at the end. Sci-Fi or not, those test pilots and astronauts definitely had "the right stuff." Thanks for these 2 movies!

Great films and a great double feature. The revoltingly twisted, mutated face of the First Man into Space was exceptional spfx work for its time, especially considering that all they back in those days was latex! The Fiend without a Face likewise has brilliant spfx work for its time - those creepy Brain Monsters are just amazing. Top stuff.
I agree. Both films are creepy and atmospheric. The monster effects pushed the envelope as far as you could in 1958 and are still really gruesome!

Thanks for this. I saw the first feature in 1968 on the afternoon sci-fi movie but never saw it again until now. I've seen the second several times but the last was probably 50 years ago. Good wholesome fun. (cackle)

@@garyfrancis6193 - I recall hot dogs marching with ice cream sandwiches and sodas. Drive-in fare served hot was mostly inedible, except for hungry teenagers. They will eat most anything. We brought our own popcorn and Coke.

I agree! I first saw it on TV when I was about 23 and it had several scenes that genuinely scared me. The whole thing has a creepy atmosphere, it's a great drive in movie!

My dad is a big horror movie fan and he always showed me and my brother all kind of horror movies from a young age. At some point i wondered what movie actually ever scared my dad because i just couldnt imagine anthing scaring him. He told me he saw this movie when it first came out and this was it.
What a neat story! This movie scared me too, when I first saw it. Pretty creepy, with some nice suspense!

I love this movie. They don't make 'em like this anymore. So little money yet so much better special effects and imagination. Those were the days *sigh* gone forever.
I agree! I'd much rather see this than today's hyperactive CGI cartoons. They knew how to create a mood in the '50s - these flicks were creepy and interesting, you could watch them again and again and pick up on something new each time.
I love the actual drive-in ads for the snack bar at the beginning of this video. It reminded me though that food was pretty boring back then. Ads today would show lettuce and cheese on the hamburger, and mustard and relish on the hot dogs, and butter on the popcorn. ☺️

At the drive in there was the playground over by the snack bar. You could play and watch the movie and eat your snacks all at the same time and stay up late.

This is a great concept! It encourages you to sit through a movie and enjoy the buildup and anticipation, like before we had a pause button.
Doesn't it make it more fun? It's so great enjoying the first film and as it draws to a close, knowing you still have the Intermission and another fun movie lined up waiting for you!

When I was kid we also had a show on Saturday nights at midnight called Dr. Shock, with a mad scientist character dressed in a labcoat with smoking beakers and chemicals everywhere lol. He would host 2 old sci fi movies and my Dad would come sneak me out of my room so we could watch them without my Mom getting mad because I was up so late lol.

In the days of black and white television our local Chevrolet dealer sponsored the late night science fiction/horror movie. Jim and Tom "Gustman Presents" would do their corny local monotone sales pitch and were the only sponsor. But they always had good movies. Fiend Without A Face was one of my favorites.
Great story. I miss the days of independent TV stations. There was an intimacy about them, that doesn't exist in the 21st century.
On one of our two (at first) local stations, the news anchor got drafted to dress up weird and host the creature features. Sort of a pre-Elvira low-buck Dracula type. He worked there for decades doing everything from news, weather, sports, the movie schtick, commercials, he was a real fixture.
i saw this as a teen with my girl friend and got thru the first movie but as i came back after getting food during the intermission she had transformed her self and was ready for action of a personal excitment nature and i was happy to oblige her innocent s
We saw only seconds of the second film as we came up for air during out TWISTING .. I was happy to see the second feature now as my wife has passed but sed to know she never saw it....fully.... At this ERECT point i bid u adieu
First Man into Space
Plot
U. S. Navy Commander Charles "Chuck" Prescott (Marshall Thompson) is unsure if his brother, Lt. Dan Prescott (Edwards), is the right choice for piloting the high altitude, rocket-powered Y-13. Air Force Space Command's Captain Ben Richards (Robert Ayres) insists that Dan is their best pilot, even though when piloting the Y-12 in the ionosphere, he began experiencing difficulties. Dan ignored flight regulations upon landing by seeing his girlfriend (Marla Landi) rather than filing his flight report. Captain Richards, however, insists that Dan pilot the Y-13 after being checked out and briefed by Dr. Paul von Essen (Carl Jaffe).
At 600,000 feet, Dan is supposed to level off the Y-13 and begin his descent, but he continues to climb, firing his emergency boost for more speed. He climbs to 1,320,000 feet (250 miles) and loses control while passing through a dense cloud of unknown material, forcing him to eject.
The New Mexico State Police report that a Mexican farmer spotted a parachute land south of Alvarado, New Mexico. Chief Wilson (Bill Nagy) meets Commander Prescott near the wreckage; the automatic pilot escape mechanism and braking chute operated perfectly. An unknown rock-like material has encased the Y-13's fuselage; testing shows that it is completely impervious to X-rays, infrared, and ultraviolet light.
Later that night, a wheezing "creature" breaks into Alameda's New Mexico State Blood Bank, brutally murdering one of the blood bank's nurses; the thing then proceeds to drink vast quantities of blood. The next day, a newspaper headline reads "Terror Roams State" and tells of brutal and inhuman slaughtering of cattle on a farm next to the crash site. Both the dead cattle and the blood bank nurse show similar wounds. When Chuck and Chief Wilson examine the nurse's body, Chuck notices shiny specks around the wounds, as well as on the blood bank door. They see the same specks on the necks of the dead cattle; they also find a high-altitude oxygen lead from the Y-13.
Chuck suspects that the killings may have something to do with the crashed Y-13 and requests that Wilson send sample specks to Dr. von Essen at Aviation Medicine. The next day, test results show that they are particles of meteor dust and show no signs of structural damage from passage through the atmosphere. Later, Dr. von Essen explains the results to Chuck: Wherever the encrustation occurs on the Y-13 fuselage, the metal is intact. In places not encrusted, the metal has been transformed into a brittle, carbon-like substance, easily reduced to powder. Chuck theorizes that the covering may be some sort of "cosmic protection".
Three more killings are reported. Chuck assumes that the same covering that protected the Y-13 fuselage also coated "everything" inside the cockpit, which means that the creature behind the killings must be his brother Dan. Chuck theorizes that when the canopy burst, Dan's blood absorbed a high content of nitrogen as the protective coating quickly formed over his body, allowing him to survive. But with Dan's metabolism having been altered in space, his body and brain have now become starved of oxygen on Earth; he must now replace that oxygen by consuming any type of oxygen-enriched blood.
When Dan's coated helmet is found in a car with his latest victim, Chuck's theory is proven correct. Captain Richards and Chief Wilson put in a call to Washington. Suddenly, the hulking, wheezing, encrusted creature that was once Dan crashes through a nearby window in their building.
Chuck realizes that his brother is finding it difficult to breathe. Dan then has Dr. von Essen open the high-altitude testing chamber while he taps into the building's public address system, warning everyone to stay out of the corridors. Chuck instructs Dr. von Essen to relay directions over the system to Dan on how to find the high-altitude chamber. Dan follows the directions while Chuck follows behind.
Dan stumbles into the chamber. Chuck realizes that his brother's hands are too badly deformed for him to operate the controls, so Chuck enters the chamber to assist him. A technician quickly increases the chambers' altitude to 38,000 feet, enabling Dan to breath more comfortably. While Chuck uses an oxygen mask, Dan's humanity is slowly restored. He has no recollection of events after he ejected from the Y-13, but, through labored breathing, says "I just had to be the first man into space". After which he collapses, breathing his last.

Marc Charbonau's idea of turning a PC into a drive-in is something I've been doing for a few years now in the summer. I drive to the nearest beach (on Long Island), set the PC up, bring my seat back a little & watch the movie. In this modern age, it's the closest you'll ever get to the real thing.
Sounds like a great idea. I do the same thing during summer in my garage - used to use projector but now do laptop on hood. I patch the earphone out line on the PC into the speaker system and sound is great. With a burger and some popcorn, it's at least a little of the fun :-)

The start is interesting as it’s fairly realistic according to what they knew then.
Who knows with the pandemic maybe drive-ins may have to come back.i miss the drive-in theaters.i grew up poor,so the experience was greatly appreciated whenever I got the chance to go
Me too. We loved going. The last time I went was the best - we went to see American Werewolf in London and it was late in the season, around Halloween. Very few people there because of the cold, so we got a great spot and show started early thanks to shorter days. It was freezing and we thought we'd die but the Hot-Shot heater kept us super warm the whole time and it was the best. A bunch of pop-up drive ins opened summer of 2020 due to Covid, hopefully we'll see more this summer :)

40,000 feet to Sea Level in less than one minute and the Commander comes out like nothing. Those were real men who defied Physics without sustaining any damage.
They were tough in those days.

First Man into space when Mexican Consul (Roger Delgado the first Master of Dr. Who) tells of a bull escaping when a US rocket came down near town, the bull did $25,000 damgaes, me being a great diplomat would have ask, "did the bull hop into a tank and drive through town." Our relations could only go up from this moment on. I did enjoy this film. The Fiend without a face is a nifty thriller that boasts some good stop motion work, not as good Harryhausen but very good.

That was a nice looking lakeside house in the forest at about 1:41:00 into Fiend Without A Face. It looks like some fine bicycle riding in to that house from the base research facility.

That's amazing! What a great keepsake of a bygone era. We nearly pulled a couple off also, just barely stopped car in time. I think one time we did actually damage it and took it to the snack stand totally embarrassed. No charge but they did not look too happy about it!
