  • Vibe Sea Ghost Raised Custom Kayak Seat..Concept will work with other kayaks with scupper holes.
    UPDATE ON BUILD! READ THIS!
    I did make changes to the seat to spread out the load on the scupper holes. The first thing I did was use a big flat washer so the pvc coupler would rest on it and not the scupper hole. This worked good for a while. The next thing I did was mold a piece of foam that went from scupper hole to scupper hole. I then fiberglassed the foam. This spread out the weight of the rider even more across the kayak seating area. Worked great for several years. I did not have a scupper hole failure. We do not use the seat anymore as my wife prefers to sit in just the seat.

    Just the video I was looking for. Newbie here! About to buy a modestly-priced kayak as it's my first but the only thing which threw me off was how low the seating was in each one I inspected. My budget is $750 AUD. I could probably just spend $500 on an affordable but decent kayak thanks to your video. Cheers! Now more cash aside for the fishfinder/gps unit and vest. Loving it! Thanks mate!

    Nice idea but what is concerning part are the joining seams inside the scupper holes. They can be frail and tend to crack. One guy had to paddle back to shore being fsr from shore, with the back part being submerged. Once on shore they investigated and found the seam in the scupper hole had cracked which was due to the kayak trolley design using pins that mount the trolley directly in the scupper holes. With the design of that seat when ever you lean back it places a side force in the holes. Not dissing the ideas but more of an awareness of what can happen. After seeing other's bad experiences I inspected my kayaks as we have two of the same. I had to get a exchange on one my kayaks due to an unusual thin hull and horribly misaligned scupper holes from the top and bottom mold. The replacement kayak is awesome. Built the way it should have been.

    I don’t know if you check the comment list, hope you do-I tried to go to your website and nothing loaded, just came up with a strange notice, not a down server notice but no website either. I wanted to see a full schematic of this. I could prob build it easily enough by the vid though too. Just finished my pvc kayak cart! On a roll here! Lol! Thanks for the vid cowboy 🤘

    dude, that is such a simple concept, I have been looking at all different kinds of seats trying to accomplish what you did with pvc. that seat is similar to my kingfisher seat in my moken 10 so I am going to copy your idea. it's genius and so inexpensive. I'm putting a trolling motor on mine also. I just fish enough to eat when I'm on the lake but I have a quadcopter with floats that I plan on using at the lake to take aerial videos so the motor is wireless and the quad will follow you while your toolin' around. you should post this on kayakdiy on facebook if you haven't already.

    I'm thinking of adding a raised seat to my sit-in kayak. Planning on cutting out the molded seat, padding the floor, adding a 5 gal bucket/bird and buck seat, securing it with adjustable bungees or small ratchet straps. Any suggestions?

  • @thomasfinnie3436
    @thomasfinnie3436 7 років тому

    It seems it might be possible to have an adjustable back by not gluing the pvc back piece in place to the seat frame, attaching a piece of plywood to the pvc seat back then adjusting it back and forward with the adjustable straps.

    Pretty creative, I have a Malibu Two xl. I wonder if this may work, I'm just concerned about my center of gravity.... any ideas..? fyi is a tandem Kayak I use with my son who weights about 90 pounds wet... Lol

    • @Thirdcoastcowboy
      @Thirdcoastcowboy  7 років тому +1

      You can add a box or stack up some towels to sit on and try different heights to see how it feels. Then build the permanent seat. Hope that helps :)

  • @pepperrupert
    @pepperrupert 8 років тому +2

    did you build the outriggers as a result of raising the seat so much and changing the center of gravity? i have a heritage angler 12' and did something similar with a seat and no outriggers...first time i sat in it..kayak rolled like a barrel...thank goodness i was in about 12 inches of water!

    • @Thirdcoastcowboy
      @Thirdcoastcowboy  8 років тому

      The outriggers we're put on my equinox kayak which is pretty narrow, so very tippy. This seat is on our Vibe Sea Ghost kayak that is wider and very stable; about 31" wide. Hasn't rolled on me. :) Im fine with the seat in lakes and flats. I don't use it when going "btb" beyond the breakers.

  • @tcb069
    @tcb069 7 років тому +1

    great video on the seat cool idea, you mentioned that it was stable ,but how is it standing for fishing

    • @Thirdcoastcowboy
      @Thirdcoastcowboy  7 років тому

      Its not good for that model which is the 2015 Vibe SeaGhost SG130. It does provides more vision and comfort. The 2016 SG130 however you can stand in stock. There is a difference in the deck on the two boats. 2016 is flat and 2015 has some curve to conform to your rear end as it was designed for a basic padded seat.

  • @rbleda

    I forgot to tell you, I have a Patriot sit on top fishing kayak, I don’t know if that matters. It looks like the top square and bottom square uses 12” long pieces of pvc. I guess that’s why I am asking you about the 10’ piece of pvc. If I am right a 10’ piece of pvc wouldn’t be long enough? Please help. Lol thanks 🙏

    Scared of the scupper holes. Awesome job though. Scupper holes are the weakest part of a kayak. That´s why I avoid transporting my kayak loaded with the crate and tackle, with the H cart.

    Im doing this seat for mine, but searching in the coments of your video and in several other videos a lot of people saied that it was a very bad idea to introduce the pvc tubes on the scupper holes, that it certanly will crack , so my question is. How it ended up for you ,did it crack? If so how long it lasted? Do you still recomend it ? Thanks in advance Hope you and your family are doing ok.

    my ass hurt just looking at that hard board under there! use suspension like we do in our tree stands. U will hang in the air and not have that pressure pushing up into your lower back like u are gonna after a few hrs on this thing. Good concept, but remove wood. use paracord, webbing or straps. then ur seat

    When you put the bottom legs in the drain holes, do you have much water coming into the Kayak? Just wondering how much water comes in without the plugs?

    • @john4541
      @john4541 7 років тому

      Rick Ivey you can plug this holes with foam practice golf balls from the bottom. This way it won't get in the way of the PVC.

      It should take your weight but I would consider having a slightly thicker wooden base or have a mid support structure which this design lacks, but it comes down to personal preference I guess. I'm not an expert, so don't trust me, but that's just my logic.
