I am teaching a class on pollinators. This morning I photographed a female and male New Zealand squash blossom. A small bumble bee was sleeping in the male flower. The female flower has a swelling ovary, which will turn into an edible squash. Male and female flowers are distinct as the video shows. Good teaching.
Yes, I do this every morning and it totally works. You should do it in the morning, ...no not that, I mean pollinate your squash. Especially if you have cucumber beetles, ...they'll have the pollen eaten by 10:00 am. You can easily see the pollen on the male stamen, and also on the base of the petals. I carefully tear away the petal and dab that on to the pistil of the female. You can use most any variety of squash to pollinate another. It doesn't have to be the same variety. When cucumber beetles are present, you can tie a plastic baggie around the head of a male flower in the evening that will open in morning. All the pollen will be preserved, and you will have enough to pollinate 3 or 4 females. You can easily tell a male bud that is going to open. It will be orange. Good luck, and thanks for a great video John
You mentioned a lack of success (at least as of 2012) in finding a female. If this is still a problem, may God send you a fertile female to marry so that you can engage in some prolific pollination, and raise many healthy plants.
This was so informative. I'm growing squash in my backyard so I will definiteky pollinate them. I'm glad to know that I have more males as I'm looking at my squash right now. I didn't know I could eat the flower. I'll definitely watch this again to make sure I'm doing it right. By doing it, I mean pollinating. Lol!
I always enjoy and get a kick out of your videos!!! You are a very energetic and enthusiastic person and you always bring a smile to my face!!! This particular video of course you had me rolling in laughter! Although I have not seen every single video you have out there, I have watched many and I always enjoy, BUT of the videos I have watched this one has by far the best!!! I love love love your sense of humor!!! Now I know in all seriousness you meant what you were teaching literally but there was a comical side to the words and their meanings and how some would take what you said no matter how innocent and you were getting a true kick outta explaining this one! Just thinking of that alone can bring some oneryness out in a person and that was evident here for sure! Loved it!!!! People sitting squirming worried about checking a flower against their parts and probably worried about doing so in public, in the Broad daylight, with the sun shinning directly on those exposed parts like a spotlight... Lol!!! This has completely made my day and I will spread the word like a wildfire...LMBO!!!
thanks for this video jon/john? after watching this, we went out and pruned and pollinated our squashes. we ate some flowers as well and i'm super surprised about just how good flowers taste. i've just been throwing them in my compost pile for the last month. very informative as usual. thanks a bunch..
This is awesome! I think this will solve my squash plant problem. Plus I did not know that the beautiful yellow flowers could be eaten. Thanks John :) Off to pollinate ....
Ok, you not only made my day more interestin but you save me from ripping out my monster squash plants for lack of production. I'm ashamed I didn't know this...
John, thank you so much. You are a natural and I appreciate your help. Your presentation was both informative and humorous. Much appreciated. I was desperate. Sharon Summers
You are such a smooth operator the way you pollinate the flowers John. Great video. This is easy to do and even if you feel you have plenty of bees around I think this is still worth doing just to be sure.
I have never ever pollinated a plant, tons of bees here , my flowers really bring them in.. .. but have seen many videos doing so.. not sure what to think of this video.. : D , explanation was simple .. thanks John!
There is another thing you need to know... The time of day. The females are viable only on the day they open, and only for a few hours after they open. Giant pumpkins open at sunrise, but other varieties may open in the evening.
Great video! You are so fun to watch! I just started a garden and I'm so excited! I've actually created a cost analysis spreadsheet to track my garden expenses, retail cost of produce, and how much I harvest to see exactly how much I save my family in cost of produce! I'm trying to share with as many people as possible because gardening is so much fun and can save money too! I'm trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can and share what I learn with others too! Thanks for sharing!!
thanks for the info thought maybe it was slugs or something making the flowers drop off just started growing kakai pumpkins thanks to watching you, pumpkin seeds a good natural dewormer for chickens& people
Thanks for showing me how to pollinate pumpkins. This video was great. 🤣🤣lol I've never done this before. My pumpkin plant is getting so big right now! Thanks for sharing as always! I am actually cracking up all by myself watching this right now!!!😅🤣🤣🤣
Hilarious video, thanks. I have been trying to figure out which of the flowers are male vs. female and this really helped. Also, love that you show how the flowers are edible. In Mexico we eat them all of the time, they are called "flor de calabaza." There's tons of recipes online on how to prepare them.
Thanks for the information and humor! This was a great video. I was wondering why the flowers on my summer squash plant kept drying up and falling off.
Thanks for the video ive been doing this for years. I absolutely love this video. Great information and hilarious. I've shared it with my FB gardening group in Ontario Canada
Thank you! I figured i would be fine with all the humming birds and bees around. I really enjoy watching your show!!! funny, entertaining and informative! biggest bang for your buck! I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOUR TAKE ON MARIJUANA!
I have been watching your videos for a while. This has to be one of the funniest things, ha, I have seen from you. I feel like I was listening to my children talking to my grandchildren.both males and females, about body parts. Too funny. Mine and yours...ha!
We chose to grow spaghetti squash and butternut squash. These are family favorites. There are a few 'baby' fruits (1/2->1 in) that are completely yellow (even some that have made it to almost time for the flower to open) and don't seem to be growing on the butternut vines and there are a few spaghetti fruits that are yellowing and look thin and 'groovy' for lack of a better word. Do you have any ideas what would cause this and how to 'fix' the issue? Thank you.
Thanks for the tip. My zucinni plants have done very well. Nature has a way of pollinating. Little black sugar ants are all over my plants and they are going from flower to flower taking over for the bees.
I pollinated pumpkins with zucchini pollen (there were no male pumpkin flowers). It made nice pumpkins. What will the seeds from these franken-pumpkins produce when I plant them?
Great video! Super fun and educational!! I had a question for you... if a female flower is already starting to grow fruit (which is how we know it's a female because of the bulbous part), why do we need to pollinate? Isn't it already essentially fertilized and the fruit part (aka the zucchini) just continue to grow? Thanks!!!
After watching this I went outside and done exactly what he said to do. Except I got into it like ooh yea zucchini whose is it...you like that you naught zucchini...🤣😂 Had way to much fun doing it his way lmao
Hilarious! But very informative, hoping to actually get some spaghetti squash this year! Made a mistake of planting them at the end of my raised garden, but going to hopefully get something to put at the end for them to grow up on today!
How do you know the squash and zucchini accepted the pollen after hand pollination , I cant find any pictures on pollinated squash, zucchini , cantaloupe, or watermelon. I have several plants and have pollinated them but how do I tell if they will continue to grow for harvest.
You know when they are pollinated because the bulge at the end of the female flower will continue to grow. It is wasn't pollinated it would eventually die
Oh dear you had me blushing Learn Organic Gardening at GrowingYourGreens at the beginning of the video when you were showing us how to identify our "thing".....hahahahaha......anyways, thanks for sharing such an informative video about this particular veggie, up til now I have had no success in growing these and now I know why. Lol......I know now that I need to do the male and female "Thing"....hahaha
I pollinated the only zucchini flower yesterday, I was super excited to finally see a zucchini. I'm not sure why my plant has small baby zucchini's all over it, but they never get big enough to bloom. They get about the size of my pinky finger, turns yellow and just falls off or the flower on the end gets really old and it dies before getting big enough to blossom. I don't know why I so wanted some organic zucchini this summer. These plants are not as easy to grow as I thought.
I don't know why you're trying to have a hard time trying to find a female you're a good-looking man and you got a nice job going on like what's the problem bro
My wife walks into the room and asks "Are you watching plant porn?"
Lol
Jay Crew God creación so amazing
🤣🙈
I was thinking the same thing!

This is awesome! I think this will solve my squash plant problem. Plus I did not know that the beautiful yellow flowers could be eaten. Thanks John :) Off to pollinate ....
Informative, entertaining and hilariously funny! 5 Stars!!!
Very funny video. I honestly wasn't expecting this. 😂
What if the female flowers are closed? Can I open her up or do I have to be there when she opens on her own?
Did you ever find out the answer to this? I need to know too :)
Me too. My female flowers are closed and my Male flowers are open.
@@toriwilson2382 You need to wait until they open on their own. They won't be ready for pollinating if you open them yourself.
@@angeliquesnow9485 Thank you very much for answering ❤
Thank you for your in depth instructions on how exactly to hand pollinate squash plants. Yours is the most in depth video I've found yet! Thank you!!
Well this is certainly an eye opener. Thanks for the humor; I totally appreciate the lesson. Now for finding the male and females!
Good and funny stuff John! Way more info than I got in High School.
This is one of your better videos.
John couldn't be any higher if he tried. However, thanks for the vid, great info
I was thinking he must be high. 😄
This was the best video how to, as most don't have the good close ups.
Dude I laughed so hard I cried. Great job.. gonna go pimp my zukes now.

You are such a smooth operator the way you pollinate the flowers John.
Great video. This is easy to do and even if you feel you have plenty of bees around I think this is still worth doing just to be sure.

Made my entire day! Thank you for the info that even a child can understand. My thing, your thing 😂😂
Thanks so much.. its my first time planting squash and at last, a female flower bloomed.. i will try this.. 😁😁
There is another thing you need to know... The time of day. The females are viable only on the day they open, and only for a few hours after they open. Giant pumpkins open at sunrise, but other varieties may open in the evening.

I think this might just be my favorite video of yours but I still have hundreds to go through. lol
I pollinated pumpkins with zucchini pollen (there were no male pumpkin flowers). It made nice pumpkins. What will the seeds from these franken-pumpkins produce when I plant them?
Very informative and entertaining!
Been watching you off and on for years and this video is hilarious. I hope you find your female flower someday.
This is the funniest thing I saw today. Thanks!
Thanks for a good laugh! Hilarious.
