      Very true it definitely does that thing and reminds me of that. 1 of the best guitar tones out there and not your typical tone for most bands in that genre. So clear and full of dynamic character.

    Just putting this out to fellow enthusiasts who might be considering the Royalist mkiii…. It’s awesome. Today I’ve played/compared a Marshall ST20H, Friedman TwinSister Head and ToneKing Royalist mkiii through a 2x12 cab loaded with Celestion V30 and G12H30. The guitar was a Gibson ‘68 LP custom reissue.
    The Royalist could be dialled back giving snap & quack with rich tone and dialled up with a lot of texture and grunt without going dark. It remains bright (but not too spiky brash) with the HF switch even at the high attenuation levels and yet remains rich throughout a range of volume. I didn’t really find compromise of note. It’s bright and rich all at once, has amazing woman tone and fantastic harmonic feedback loop/interplay and you can get there below 90db. That’s why I say it’s awesome. I was blown away by how much it put these other two amps in the shade.
    The ST20H is great fun for the UK price but IMO you’d have to be a die hard nuts Marshall fan to pay the US price when the Royalist mkiii is so far ahead in fidelity and feel. Plus the Royalist has the versatility of attenuation included which you’d have to buy separately to get the ST20H where you want it to be without going over 100db volume level.
    The Friedman TwinSister was also flat and dark compared to the Royalist. Its master volume works superbly as expected from Friedman but it didn’t have the same flexibility in tone or feel compared to the Royalist. It certainly didn’t allow for the same dynamic range. There was no snap or quack like the Royalist for lower gain settings and the harmonic interplay just wasn’t exciting like the Royalist. The woman tone and sustain was lack lustre by comparison.
    It’s amazing how much more alive the same guitar felt and sounded through the Royalist compared to the other two amps.
    Hope this helps some. Have a great weekend everyone. Cheers 🍻

    Awesome amp! I got a Sky King about 6 months before this release. The attenuation situation sounds very familiar here. I don’t push my Sky King too much to use the attenuator…mostly use pedals for dirt or a Plexi pedal. But the attenuation for me on these amps is good for 1-2 clicks. Anymore and you do lose a lot of the power in the tone. However, that’s the point of the HF switch. To bring back lost perceived treble from very low volumes here. I know personally as my lead Sky King channel when with attenuator…I have to roll guitar volume to get that good distortion or swap lower gain tubes…otherwise the attenuator is pretty pegged.
    Given most would use this for the built in distortion….a master would have been nice or a more variable attenuator. The volume is your distortion control so, and more than 2 click on attenuator it sucks the tone a bit….great for home playing. But gigs I wouldn’t want to go below 2 clicks. My Sky King 35w, is so loud playing with a drummer it doesn’t even go past 2 1/2 or it’s too loud! That’s witt the attenuator fully open! With a mic it’s fine for stage as well around volume 2 or 2/ 1/2 and a click or two of attenuator. That’s why relying on attenuators to crank the 1970s I’m iffy. Def hope to demo one soon though! And of course love to see one professionally out on tour somewhere.
    It makes since at home, but having the volume at 7 and turning back the attenuators more than 2 clicks…kind of a buzz kill imo for live playing. These days everything is mic up. So I do wonder how this amp performs live. Otherwise it def seems to keep the home tone chasers, and weekend warrior garage players in mind more so.
    Great playing as always!😮

    Pete, I Am in great need of a Brother in Arms to let me know how all this gets done. That’s a great Amp, 🎉 I have so many beauties! I’m new here in looking for Musicians. Also, I’m a little older than you, went to GIT in 89 and Grove in 90. I’m trying to launch 11:11®️ my Brand which must become a Band. I’m in Riverside. Wondered if we might chat about what I’m up to and id value your opinion. I don’t have any companies who I promote. I’d like to. I’m open to tube Amp companies who make Amps like that. I also DIG the 100WATT Supergroup with a master volume! Corgan got them to finally add a master. I bought the 30W version and I love it. You don’t lose that “Black Sabbath note”. It’s like a fake octave that simply exists when you use those Amps that no other does.
    Deep under-Bass.stacked harmonics and I’m pairing it with the Marshall Astoria Classic head. That’s simply Art! KT-66’s aren’t common to British Amps and the Marshalls really do sound better and bigger with KT-66’s. Hendrix had a Super Lead 100 that had KT-66’s. 😊 Blessings Pete. Let’s talk. Good review Pete but this new Tone King is way to big and heavy for a 40w amp. And the attenuator is a dud cos it's a click shifter with 6-15w between clicks. With click shifters you can rarely adjust them to desired volume. The amp also lacks independent EQs for each channel

    • @PeteThorn
      @PeteThorn  8 місяців тому +4

      Heavy? Weighs as much as your average 40 watt head I would say. In practice, the attenuator works great, and what matters is does it sound good? When I was switching channels with my Strat, did you feel like it really needed an independent EQ? I just recommend, listen with your ears and don’t be so cerebral- Does it work? Does it sound good? It does. I really like it, it’s a great take on vintage, but more versatile.

    Thanks Pete for this video! The new Tone King Royalist Mk3 head sounds very good but I would not pay $2,500 USD for an amp that uses mainly PC boards with tube sockets soldered directly on the PC boards. At that price point I would expect point to point wiring and chassis mounted tube sockets.

    Pete I don’t know how I feel about this amp. You should just send it to me and I’ll take care of it. 🤘😀
    Awesome video yo!

      Dude, this is the perfect anything recorded with a Marshall form the late 60’s through the 70’s amp. Actually early 80’s too, as a lot records then were still using plexi’s and metal panels, as well as the 70’s 2203/4’s.
