That solo was outrageous! So brilliantly put together. You never seem to run dry of new ideas. Too cool..
Thanks!
Tone King have really nailed the Brit sound.
Oddly, nailing that Billy Talent tone that's hard to get. Impressed
Very true it definitely does that thing and reminds me of that. 1 of the best guitar tones out there and not your typical tone for most bands in that genre. So clear and full of dynamic character.
Absolutely. Always a challenge getting that sound.
Dude wtf, this amp is insane.
Just putting this out to fellow enthusiasts who might be considering the Royalist mkiii…. It’s awesome. Today I’ve played/compared a Marshall ST20H, Friedman TwinSister Head and ToneKing Royalist mkiii through a 2x12 cab loaded with Celestion V30 and G12H30. The guitar was a Gibson ‘68 LP custom reissue.
The Royalist could be dialled back giving snap & quack with rich tone and dialled up with a lot of texture and grunt without going dark. It remains bright (but not too spiky brash) with the HF switch even at the high attenuation levels and yet remains rich throughout a range of volume. I didn’t really find compromise of note. It’s bright and rich all at once, has amazing woman tone and fantastic harmonic feedback loop/interplay and you can get there below 90db. That’s why I say it’s awesome. I was blown away by how much it put these other two amps in the shade.
The ST20H is great fun for the UK price but IMO you’d have to be a die hard nuts Marshall fan to pay the US price when the Royalist mkiii is so far ahead in fidelity and feel. Plus the Royalist has the versatility of attenuation included which you’d have to buy separately to get the ST20H where you want it to be without going over 100db volume level.
The Friedman TwinSister was also flat and dark compared to the Royalist. Its master volume works superbly as expected from Friedman but it didn’t have the same flexibility in tone or feel compared to the Royalist. It certainly didn’t allow for the same dynamic range. There was no snap or quack like the Royalist for lower gain settings and the harmonic interplay just wasn’t exciting like the Royalist. The woman tone and sustain was lack lustre by comparison.
It’s amazing how much more alive the same guitar felt and sounded through the Royalist compared to the other two amps.
Hope this helps some. Have a great weekend everyone. Cheers 🍻
Let other people play
I like how it’s put together, very practical and useful w dual channels and dual attenuators and sounding fantastic! And God knows I need it to be simple and straightforward😅
Again an other perfect video. You answered all the questions we would have asked and you have shown most of the applications and versatility of the amp.
That amp sound amazing! 😮 That attenuator sounds great! Great playing as well as always!! Loved the way the 2 channel config sounds
I like this more than some other amps.
Thanks Pete. Super cool playing and amp. I love Tone King amps and they just keep coming out with great ideas.
Incredible playing, Pete! The amp is cool too!
Great video... did an awesome job showing the versatility of that amp.... those tones and your playing are smokin'! 😎👍🎸🤘
I liked this amp more than I thought I would. Great demo, Pete!
Hey Pete, the amp sounds great, and as usual your content is second to none, But boy I need the guitar tab to that intro you played.
Great video Pete.
I just bought a ToneKing Falcon Grande. Love it.
Was thinking on getting the new Marshall JTM 45 studio for some British tones but this new Tone King sounds phenomenal.
Tone King does it again👍 😊😊
Sounds terrific! Lovely bite!
Great tones Pete!
Been a fan of their amps for many years now.
Always nice attenuated 👍 Sounds good.
Pete you just flat out crushed it (you always crush it but you extra-crushed this one)!!!
Bonus: that 60s strat!!!! I can’t get enough!!! More, please!!!
As usual, I’m struck by your mix of feel, intuitive ear, and production abilities. Well done.
Killer track at the beginning man and also best stank face ever at 0:52.🤘
Such clean playing, Pete. You sound good no matter which amp you choose.
I think that's the coolest part of the amp you can set up a beautiful rhythm scenario and then jump into a cool Melody and switch back and forth
Lotta fun. I could spend a winter with that rig - thanks Pete!
Mine is underway... can't wait!
Awesome Video as always :)
had the pleasure of meeting pete thorn in Winterton NL what a great guy an a wealth of knowledge!!!!!
it doesn`t get any better than this😀
Here he go again ! Pete nailed it !
Now That's what I would call, a Marshall in the box. Great tones and playing as usual Pete!
I think he enjoyed this amp!
That's a cool amp! I noticed they have that in a combo as well another killer grab and go for sure.
Sounds so good...lighter gain & articulate. Awesome review... I damn want one
Pete is such the professional!
You always get amazing tones, whether it's a Marshall balls to the wall, or a transistor radio. It's all in the fingers they say...
Man that thing is special!
Great sounding amp!
Wow great amp
Hey Pete, this is another great sounding amp that I hope you have the opportunity to do an IR capture for your Tonex IR collection. I am looking forward to the release of your Tonex IR's in the future. Cheers!
Loved it!!!
Cool that you have started to do amp demos 😃👍
As always great video. Does it need an effects loop? Hmmmm
Great amplifier
Love the Germino
@Pete Thorn- GREAT job, FANTASTIC music and playing, as always! Sounds great, awesome tone!
Could you tell us a little more about the Tone King/Celestion 1660 speakers in the cab that's paired with the amp?
Now... I'd love to read your thoughts on and comparisons of the Tone King Royalist Mk III, the 65 Amps Empire and Producer EL, including the Master Voltage scheme of the Empire and Producer EL. Waddya say, Pete?
These exact features but in a AC30 style and I’m sold!
This sounds beautiful! Wow - gear lust! Do I need another amp?? mmmmm. Maybe....
Thats killer!!!
Hey Pete! Thanks for the review. I was super excited to see this amp making its way back.
How would you compare this to the bad cat hot cat?
I’m looking for a new amp and was liking the hot cat, but now this. It never ends haha.
Good idea✌️
That Ibanez explorer is so nice
what a ripper! were you just mic'ing up the cab in your control room?
Every single note and chord you play is story for itself and amp does justice to that.Awesome amp and even more awesome playing.
Hey thanks!!!
Great demo, for a minute I thought you were working for the MCA 😉
Brilliant!!!!
This is amazing! Can it do EVH modded Plexi? A bit higher gain stuff etc. I'd buy it tonight if so.
I was hoping he'd cover that as well.. but i am thinking you could nudge it with an eq pedal and be right there. He does that at the end at the 12:20 mark saying he has gain up all the way. It sounds in the ballpark.
Hey Pete - wondering if you’ve ever tried a 3rd Power Kitchen Sink amp? It’s a pretty cool, versatile amp. I can’t speak to exactly how authentic the marshall sounds are, but it sure sounds good to me. Great playing and review, as always!
To my ears this gives 'mix ready' tones - a little easier on the ear than the amps it's emulating. I like it.
ha! just when marshall finally hits a home run, tone king steps up to the plate with a g-slam.
hey pete-how r u recording it in this vid??
awesome vid as usual btw.
sounds sick
Cool song.
So many awesome amps.. but not enough money or space !!! Bought my SV20 last year and Im already tempted to get another amp.
now I need this amp on a fractal pedal
Was that a faux delay trick? Sounded great :)
Awesome amp! I got a Sky King about 6 months before this release. The attenuation situation sounds very familiar here. I don’t push my Sky King too much to use the attenuator…mostly use pedals for dirt or a Plexi pedal. But the attenuation for me on these amps is good for 1-2 clicks. Anymore and you do lose a lot of the power in the tone. However, that’s the point of the HF switch. To bring back lost perceived treble from very low volumes here. I know personally as my lead Sky King channel when with attenuator…I have to roll guitar volume to get that good distortion or swap lower gain tubes…otherwise the attenuator is pretty pegged.
Given most would use this for the built in distortion….a master would have been nice or a more variable attenuator. The volume is your distortion control so, and more than 2 click on attenuator it sucks the tone a bit….great for home playing. But gigs I wouldn’t want to go below 2 clicks. My Sky King 35w, is so loud playing with a drummer it doesn’t even go past 2 1/2 or it’s too loud! That’s witt the attenuator fully open! With a mic it’s fine for stage as well around volume 2 or 2/ 1/2 and a click or two of attenuator. That’s why relying on attenuators to crank the 1970s I’m iffy. Def hope to demo one soon though! And of course love to see one professionally out on tour somewhere.
It makes since at home, but having the volume at 7 and turning back the attenuators more than 2 clicks…kind of a buzz kill imo for live playing. These days everything is mic up. So I do wonder how this amp performs live. Otherwise it def seems to keep the home tone chasers, and weekend warrior garage players in mind more so.
Great playing as always!😮
So sad that Marshall never figured this out.
Come to NC
This head is the real deal. Just fired mine up for the first time today and it was a good time. Initially the 67 setting is the MVP for me but all settings I liked a lot. Looking forward to getting deeper into it.
Hey Pete! Can you capture it for TONEX? What about this ideia?
Can it do Steve Marriott's Decca era Small Faces tones? Great vid, cool amp
Hey Pete
Wow I’m impressed
Me too
Pete could you use the direct out on this amp straight into effects and that signal to a power amp and speaker for a wet dry set up?
amazing intro song! what tune was it?
I just watched Johan’s vid earlier today and ordered one of these heads. Totally impulsive but it sounded so good I want to see if it can send my ‘75 50 watter packing. Always wanted to scratch that 67 era itch and it did that and the 70 setting so well had to try it.
What was the result?
@@MatthewTomich I’m not in a hurry to do so as I don’t need the money but I will sell the ‘75. Just put the funds towards another guitar or something. It sounds great but not better than the TK. It’s really like having two NMV Marshall’s and you just decide you only need one.
@@SkooraIf I can match a 1975 NMV JMP, it is the real deal.
It's like someone esembled Pete Thorn in a lab to be the ultimate tone machine.
Please tell me what this "mysterious" pedal you are using for the leads? Pretty please.
is the ERA control a bright switch selector? 100pf /500pf / 5n ?
This is the Carr Mercury V.. I’m stuck between them
how does the attenuator affect how hard the tube amp section is working? I mean, does the amp work as if it's set to the higher volume and breakup the same as if the attenuator isn't being used?
Ibanez destroyer ftw!
If this had an effects loop it would be my idea of the perfect amplifier.
You really can’t do a loop in an amp like this. It screws up the whole plexi thing.
@@PeteThorn I wonder how the Marshall SV20 did it. Absolutely nails it imo.
What about the Friedmans? They have effects loops? And some of them sound pretty “plexi”esq to me…
I thought it was Going to Be A ( 1- Tube- Amp)🔊 But is Such a GREAT idea to Have the Years As Settings!! Has anyone ever Did That PETE?? & 67 my year 🍼 & was a good Year + the Settings are awesome! Thanks PETE and Tone King 👑🔊🎸🤘🤠
Does this amp work well with pedals in general and a looper without an effects loop?
Wow!!!!
Pete wasaaaaap
Well that Amp was one really well thought out piece of Kit!!!
Is the attenuators like a post phase inverter master volume cut? That's what it sounds like the way it's described.
No, it’s an attenuator. Post power-section. Which for these types of amps is the only thing that really sounds good.
Pete, I Am in great need of a Brother in Arms to let me know how all this gets done. That’s a great Amp, 🎉 I have so many beauties! I’m new here in looking for Musicians. Also, I’m a little older than you, went to GIT in 89 and Grove in 90. I’m trying to launch 11:11®️ my Brand which must become a Band. I’m in Riverside. Wondered if we might chat about what I’m up to and id value your opinion. I don’t have any companies who I promote. I’d like to. I’m open to tube Amp companies who make Amps like that. I also DIG the 100WATT Supergroup with a master volume! Corgan got them to finally add a master. I bought the 30W version and I love it. You don’t lose that “Black Sabbath note”. It’s like a fake octave that simply exists when you use those Amps that no other does.
Deep under-Bass.stacked harmonics and I’m pairing it with the Marshall Astoria Classic head. That’s simply Art! KT-66’s aren’t common to British Amps and the Marshalls really do sound better and bigger with KT-66’s. Hendrix had a Super Lead 100 that had KT-66’s. 😊 Blessings Pete. Let’s talk. Thomas Adams 11:11®️🎸⚡️♒️⚡️🤓 ✌🏼
You make every amp you play sounds great. For instance. I bought an Hombre after you demoed it and I was blown away. I love the amp but I noticed that every other demon except maybe one from other UA-cam content creators made is sound blah.
Is the guitar plugged straight into the amp?
Damn!!!
This or the dirty Shirley?
Is this amp hand wired, or PC board?. What kind of pots and transformers are in it?..
tone king are circuit board, generally sockets soldered to the board. looks like a quality hand soldered board imo.
😎👍
Using the cab? Cab sim?
Old Marshall cab, mic’d
Good review Pete but this new Tone King is way to big and heavy for a 40w amp. And the attenuator is a dud cos it's a click shifter with 6-15w between clicks. With click shifters you can rarely adjust them to desired volume. The amp also lacks independent EQs for each channel
Heavy? Weighs as much as your average 40 watt head I would say. In practice, the attenuator works great, and what matters is does it sound good? When I was switching channels with my Strat, did you feel like it really needed an independent EQ? I just recommend, listen with your ears and don’t be so cerebral- Does it work? Does it sound good? It does. I really like it, it’s a great take on vintage, but more versatile.
Sucks that they put the power and standby switches on the back. Won't work in my rack.
Really, you could just leave them on and switch via power conditioner or something. Standby is relatively unnecessary most amp manufactures say these days. But I to like it when those switches are on the front. I guess they were out of real estate! Or, there are sometimes other reasons, to put switches on the back.
@@PeteThorn I have 5 tube amps in a rack. But only one has a speaker load at any given time. I don't want all 5 to light up at the same time. I think it's pretty well established that you don't turn on a tube amp if it has no speaker load on it.
@@PeteThorn I actually learned a lot about this from you. Watching your videos convinced me to buy a reactive load box. I'll never regret that decision. I also use the Atomic Ampli-Fire Box to host impulse responses. All stuff I learned from you.
You should get a switcher that has a proper load for an idling amp. My Ampete does that. I can safely leave on eight amplifiers and switch between them.
@@PeteThorn Been wanting one of those for a long time. It's not in my budget. It's enough for me to just afford amp heads.
Thanks Pete for this video! The new Tone King Royalist Mk3 head sounds very good but I would not pay $2,500 USD for an amp that uses mainly PC boards with tube sockets soldered directly on the PC boards. At that price point I would expect point to point wiring and chassis mounted tube sockets.
Killer amp for $2500usd
Pete I don’t know how I feel about this amp. You should just send it to me and I’ll take care of it. 🤘😀
Awesome video yo!
This could be the perfect Led Zeppelin amp❤️🔥
Most definitely great for zeppelin
Dude, this is the perfect anything recorded with a Marshall form the late 60’s through the 70’s amp. Actually early 80’s too, as a lot records then were still using plexi’s and metal panels, as well as the 70’s 2203/4’s.
