    I know these videos are now quite old, but they are extremely well done. The graphics and clear explanations are excellent.

    I should have said this: "Don't forget to take your radio out of Split mode after you're finished." It gets really weird if you try to have a normal conversation with your radio still in Split mode. The person you're trying to talk to can't hear you because you're transmitting on a different frequency... and probably causing QRM to a couple of poor hams who can't understand how you can be so deaf to their complaints. Don't ask how I know... #BeenThereDidThatMoreThanOnceMyself

    Thank you so much for this video. I'm new to amateur radio, about to do my Foundation License exam, and have had problems wrapping my head around working split. Makes perfect sense now, thanks!

    Thanks for taking a step toward making this info more widely known (and therefore lessening on-freq QRM).

    Nice job Cliff. Hope you will consider continuing this thought with: full brk in CW; full duplex SSB. And, their advantages when working DX/split.

    Hello Cliff!
    Great video on how to work split. I'd like to add that the same steps can be used on the FT-817 to work the satellites. For example on the SO-50 set the freq 436.795 FM for downlink on VFO A and 145.850 for uplink on VFO B. Select SPL and it will do the "split" when you press the ptt. Pretty cool.

    Thanks OM, your presentation is very clear and finally i understand how this works on my radio. But also why and when it is needed, how i can recognize it. The remark how this can be seen on the waterfall also helped out a lot, i will now be using the waterfall i get trough CAT not only in digimodes but also for phone ! thumbs up and sub to your channel, keep up this good work! Excellent, Phillip. I'm looking forward to Winter Field Day, myself! Our local ARES group is going to work portable outdoors at the Vanderbilt University Dyer Observatory which is located on a hill just south of Nashville. Should be cold and educational at the same time! - Cliff

    Helpful video. Of course, for the purposes of instruction, it is possible to change the top line display on the '817 to display the VFO in use, instead of battery voltage.

    When you're on DXpedition, then maybe it's normal to work split. But if you're working split in contest, then it's big disrespect to all the operators.... If you can't control and work the pile-up, just do not call CQ, instead just work S&P :) Practise, practise :)
    P.S Thanks for the informative video :)

    Very good demo !!! I have one question, what is the best way to work split using TWO transceivers, one for transmit, and the other for receive, without the danger of blowing the front end of the receive radio ?

    Hey there, greetings from the UK.
    Very informative on honing ones skills as operators.
    Any recommendations on how to behave as a DXer in case you notice people insist on calling on your tx frequently?

  • @W8ASA
    @W8ASA 7 років тому

    Thanks for this video. I've shared it with a few new hams. I didn't hear you mention what I consider to be the major problem caused by stations transmitting on the DX frequency: If I am in the pileup, how will I know for sure that the DX station is responding to me? If he's covered up (by lids, jammers, etc) I may THINK I heard my call sign, or I may miss it. 73, Ken W8ASA

    Hi Cliff I've got a question for you. If I'm working split say TX on 18.076, but listening on 18.077 - Do I log the qso on MY tx frequency or the receive frequency ? Also where does the receive person log?

    • @QRPSchool
      @QRPSchool  Рік тому +1

      In this case, you were on 18.076 conducting QSO's when the volume of callers became such that you decided to work split. Everyone will be logging this contact on 18.076 because that's where you are. True, you'll be turning the VFO knob to vary the receive frequency while listening for callers, but it's appropriate for everyone to log the entries as 18.076. - Cliff

    No need for this 'working split' rubbish! When working the pile up take the callsigns with the number 1 then number 2 then 3 and so on and so on. This way works and is also good for the calling stations as they will know a rough idea of when their number will be called. Easy.
